Favorite Trail:like all trails, love to ride
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Purchased At:Bicycle House, Coppe
Strengths:Light, stiff, quick, Yeti build
Weaknesses:none
Similar Products Used:none
Bike Setup:Schwinn frame, black with gold. XTR components throughout, Chris King headset,Titec handlebar and seatpost, Race Face stem, Marzocci Superfly, Mavic Cross-Ride wheelset, Michelin tires
Bottom Line:First of all, I think the 1999 Schwinn Homegrown Factory Team was a black with gold frame. That's what I have and it retailed those days for $ 4,880.00. I bought the frame only (as a close-out)in 2000. I'v been riding MTB since 1990 and rode a few bikes, but this was absolute the best one I have ridden. It's true, the geometry was designed for racing and is not for the casual rider.I rode this bike for 10 years and still have it. With age (55), it got a little too harsh for me now and I just bought my first full suspension bike.

Bottom Line:SWEET!!! 1 by 9 drivetrain is perfect for urban assault in the land where hills are extinct. This bike is a dream come true. Pity Schwinn is owned by Satan's bike company now...

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $750.00
Purchased At:local classifieds
Strengths:helium light, Viagra stiff. Bass Boat blue with all the tasty Yeti handicraft!
Weaknesses:none
Similar Products Used:Schwinn Homegrown full suspension. Schwinn s-20
Bike Setup:Sid XL, full XTR, Hugi 240 hubs with Mavic 517 rims. Titec titanium stem and seatpost. Selle Italia titanium seat. Azonic ProTaper riser bar, Specialized titanium pedals. Maxxis Helter Skelter tires
Bottom Line:I have total lust for this bike! don't get me wrong, I still have and love my Homegrown full suspension. but its the Missus and this is my new mistress. Like any good mistress, its a faster and more exciting ride. But my body pays the price when I'm done. Full suspension, like marital relations, is easier on my system and more comfortable for most riding. I'll save my new ride for the occasional fling, at racing or the long buttery smooth singletracks we have here, in abundance. and for whenever the missus is in the shop. She may be spending some time and a lot of my money there soon, trying to compete with that bassboat blue hussy.

Favorite Trail:Buffalo pass to Spring Creek
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $2500.00
Purchased At:Cambria
Strengths:Very light, very stiff, and very, very fast
Weaknesses:not a forgiving ride, geometry is not set up for casual riders
Similar Products Used:Cannondale F-1000, Specialized Stumpjumer Comp
Bike Setup:Manitou Sx-ti, race face cranks, esp 9.0sl drivetrain
Bottom Line:This bike is the best race bike I've ever ridden. I bought the frame and built the bike up with my dream components, and I couldn't be happier. No, this bike isn't great for casual rides, and it's not particularly comfortable, but thats not what it's made for. If you pick your parts smartly you will bring this bike in at around 21 pounds. If you're a racer, this is the bike for you

Date Reviewed: May 22, 1999
Duration Product Used:
3 months
Strengths:
great frame
light weight
Weaknesses:
terrible seatpost
stem appears to be slipping on the steerer tube.
XTR 9speed doesn't perform well when dirty
Bike should come with a shock pump
Similar Products Used:
a bunch of custom built bikes
Bike Setup:
this bike
Bottom Line:It is a pity that schwinn is putting on titec parts on their bikes. My seatpost is bent and the 1-bolt Ti stem doesn't seem to want to stay put on the steerer. The headset is always too loose if it is not too tight. I'm also not happy with the 9speed XTR setup. I like to use my middle chainring over the range of the whole cassette and I find that something is not right with the top three cogs (skipping up hills). Too many worries that I shouldn't have with a bike at this price.

I built up the frameset with everything that comes stock, But I used King/517 ceramic wheels, Specialized Team tires, and a King titanium headset. This bike looks awesome and is soooooo much faster than I will ever be. Sell your car and get one today!

Bottom Line:

Schwinn has done it again. This is a well thought out ride with a smartly selected pick of components. Not to mention that schwinn has the best paint jobs of any bikes. I am glad also that schwinn decided to go with the XTR/517 wheelset. They are plenty light, bulletproof and easily servicable. plus you don't need to worry about only using them for raceday. The price is a bit high, but for what you get you absolutly cannot go wrong. This thing is all out built for speed.
