Fast, sturdy, and can take a crapload of abuse. I was just getting into freeriding, because i was a xc'er and wanted to dabble into more aggressive and fasterriding, being a larger guy, figured this would be a good testing bike. I had a GT I-Drie race, but broke it. This bike is very responsive and trustworty. I don't have the crappy 5th element shock on it, but a 2006 Fox DH5 and it is friggin killer! I can't say enough about this bike. No issues as of yet, just have to remember to tighten the bolts everyonce in a while for normal wear and tear!!! Just got a new Pike put on and eventhough it is a bit squishy, a stiffer spring will help emmensly. I want to ride it everyday, but work sucks
IF YOU LIKE TO RIDE ANYWHERE AND EVERYWHERE BUY THE 06 HECKLER. CAN'T GO WRONG!!

Bottom Line:
This bike handles awesome. The frame is solid and it rides very smooth. The bike I built is specifically to my riding style. I wanted a bike that did everything. I'm a mix between XC/FR/Urban. The Heckler is down right strong and ready to take anything you throw at it.

Strengths:
Very sturdy frame, bike handles great, and the 5th element coilover really works. I'm not there with the setup on it yet, but I'm getting closer and am happy with the difference each change makes.
Weaknesses:
Two fairly major flaws so far: When using the 5th element coil shock, you can't mount a water bottle in the normal spot. There is a 2nd water bottle holder below the downtube, but good luck getting to it during a ride. 2nd issue is that the swingarm covers the adjustment screws for the front derailleur, making setup and adjustments almost impossible.
Similar Products Used:
Simiiar? Hmmm.....2 years on a Titus switchblade.
Bike Setup:
XTR, Thomson, Raceface, TALAS fork, all decent stuff. Setup as a HD trailbike rather than a hucker. Right at 30lbs, 1 oz with some pretty aggressive tires on it. Could easily be built into a reliable mid-28lb ride if you so desired.
Bottom Line:
So far I'm very happy with the frame. As mentioned above, I built this more as a go-anywhere, do-anything trailbike. The bike handles very well and tracks straight as an arrow in the turns. It's suprising just what you can get over with 5" of travel. The 5th element coilover is pretty amazing. It doesn't bob at all as long as you stay seated. Even when standing, it doesn't feel like there's 5" of travel under you. It still feels a little harsh in the initial 1" of travel, but I'm working with the shock manual to try to tune that out. The changes I've made to the shock have made dramatic changes in the way it feels, so it's encouraging to think I will be very happy with it the more I learn about it and tinker with it. The TALAS fork is probably not needed with this frame, I bought it thinking I could crank down the travel if needed on steep climbs. I've tinkered with that once or twice, and although it's a cool feature, the bike definately handles best in the 5" travel mode. When you consider how affordable this frame is, it's hard to beat if you can live with a 2 extra lbs of frame weight.

Strengths:
Very solid feel on the trail, nice gusseting around the headtube, trick asymetrical rear triangle, and good customer service. When working, the 5th element/single pivot suspension works like a dream, better than any other f/s bike I've ever ridden. Great tunability of the shock, but too advanced for someone with no experience in suspension tuning. The bike also looks pretty darn cool too. Having a bottle opener on the non-drive drop-out is also pretty cool.
Weaknesses:
5th Element shock blew the oil seal on 3rd ride, sent it off, bike hung in garage for a week and a half, got it back mounted and also noticed that front and rear pivot bolts were already bent, next ride the oil seal blew again, bike hangs in garage for another week and a half-very frustrated at spending $3,200 to have a bike hang in my garage. Some people might consider setting up and tuning the 5th element overwhelming, but that is really a bonus for advanced riders.
Next had to get a new bushing/mounting bolt kit shipped because of excessive wear and slop in shock mounts. Next had drop-out hanger bolts come loose on the trail...shifting went to crap. Next had main pivot bolts come loose!!! Now taking back to the shop for further shock pivot warranty work.
Paint job could be a little more robust, it's too easily scratched.
2002 Z1 fr, shimano xt/lx drivetrain, xt disc brakes, thompson stem and 1.5in offset seat post-needed for getting a good position on the bike.
Bottom Line:
I love the way this bike rides on the trail, an amazing peddler when everything is working. Jumps fluidly, lands 5-6 drops nice and solid although I can feel a little rear wheel wiggle if landing off camber, and no suspension bob when climbing. I was initially very dis-satisfied with my 5th element shock since it broke twice in the first month, but since my last warranty replacement the shock has worked like a champ. I am still quite dis-gruntled with the shock mount bushing/bolt slop and will be leaving it at the shop for some warranty attention.
It currently weighs 32.5 lb's with a heavy wheelset (xt hubs, ryhno-lite rims, and IRC Kujo dh 2.35 tires), but I hope to drop 2 lb's by going to a lighter hub/rim/tire combo. Even as is, I can handle peddling up the steepest climbs thanks to a 22x34 low gear. Once this bike is pointed downhill it goes very fast, much faster and smoother than my older RM Slayer.
This bike is no xc-racer or dh rig, but an excellent riding trail bike, light weight freeride, and dirt jumping fool.
I will be much happier with it when the shock mount slop is eliminated. My advice to potential buyers, save yourself some money and buy this as a frame, then build it up specific for yourself- it will be cheaper!

Bottom Line:
This is more of an equalizer for the pre-reviewer. I do understand his frustration (I’ve been without my 5th Element for 3+ weeks now). I mean no disrespect, but the rear shock should not have such a substantial reflect on the bike value or overall rating (maybe some, but not all). This section is for the Heckler and not for the rear shock. The heckler is a superb bike (as the pre-reviewer admits), and it’s by far one of the best (if not the best) freeride machines on the market. The 5th Element is questionable, but look at rear shock reviews for that. I love my Heckler, and when it’s working, I’ll bet Ian loves his too.

Strengths:
Excellent performance from 5th emement shock - (when it's working)...great looking bike especially in yellow, great handling bike (when it's ridable), stiff and simple design.
Weaknesses:
-BLEW THE SHOCK ON THE 4TH RIDE!!!!!!!!!!!1 -BROKE THE SHOCK MOUNT RIGHT OFF ON THE 5TH RIDE!!!!! -A bit heavy for only 5" travel. -No bottle mounts that are really usable (the top one is useless as the bottle will hit the piggyback reservior on the shock, the bottom one is in a stupid place that no bottle cage will survive.) -Had to majorly dish the rear wheel to get it to center between the swingarm. -The rear shock bolt was bent when I got the bike (as an unridden frameset!)
I am pretty choked at this bike. It has been broken for more time than it has been working. I can overlook some of it's weaknesses, but it was just today that I broke the top shock mount off it doing a lousy 3 foot drop (the aluminum plates just sheared right off), so understandably, I am using this website to vent! This was the bikes 5th ride. The last time I rode it (ride number 4), I blew the shock doing maybe a 4 foot drop. I sent the shock in to Progressive and they fixed it promptly - thank you Progressive. But I don't think it should have blown in the first place being so new.
Either I have the worst luck when it comes to this bike or it is a piece of crap. I expected this machine to be a major upgrade from my old K2, but so far it can't take anywhere near the punishment that the K2 could (and it cost about the same as this Santa Cruz frameset did - for the entire bike!). Admittedly, I am not the easiest rider when it comes to my equipment (hey the North Shore is 25 minutes away!) but 2 major failures in 3 months is unacceptable, and it's not like I'm dropping 10 footers on it. I want to love this bike because it rides sweet when it works, but it will take some time for me to trust it again!
I don't know what else to say except I'm pretty unhappy.

I've only had the bike for a few months, but have put about 150 miles on it already. It may not be as fast a climber as say a Turner ’02 (sweet bike), but it still climes great! The 5th Element constantly amazes me. Like everyone else, I’m still dialing things in. Although set up for freeride/cross country, I still downhill with the best of ‘em. In fact, the faster you go, the better it feels! Before I got the heckler, I was always last in line, but now I stay ahead of all my riding buddies and their high-end bikes (Turner, Intense, Cannondale, Ellsworth). Although I may have a few small personal problems, it’s nothing that can’t be fixed. Even though the bike weighs in at a stout 31 lbs. It feels about 5 lbs less. Bottom line, I’m in love with my bike. If I had the money, I would seriously consider buying anther one, just because I like it that much. (I’m always keeping my eye open for a used one) If you want a great all around do anything bike, you won’t find anything better (check out the Jan. ’03 issue of Mountain Bike Action, great review). If you want to go cross-country a little faster than the Heckler, get the Blur, or a Turner ’02. But trust me, they wont be as fun!

Bottom Line:
Being a big fan of Santa Cruz bikes I finally plunked down some cash for a new XL Heckler frame with the 5th Element shock. I only have about 5 rides on it and so far it seems to be exactly what I wanted, climbs awesome and gives you the confidence to take on whatever you throw at it. Here are some of my problems with it. 1. The shock mounting hole in the swing arm seems to be located a bit to far forward resulting in a uneven surface for the bolt to torque to - result - bent bolt. I removed the shock the day I received the frame only to notice the lower bolt is bent! I was told they are all coming throught like that. 2. The new replaceable drop out is nice except I can't get my rear tire to be centered in the frame because the drop out moves even when properly tightened, I solved the problem by using a stainless washer as a wedge. 3. SRAM derailleurs don't seem to like the new drop out. I can't adjust the "B" tension to get the chain gap close enough to the cassette. Other than that I really like the bike.

Relatively light, but can take some punishment. I highly recommend one if you have the means! It's not (yet) a "me too" bike like the Bullit has become. Strengths:
Strong, versitile, low maintenance, fast. Fits nicely between Superlight and Bullit - more robust and plush than the SL, without the super big-hit penalty of the B. Solid construction and paint.
Weaknesses:
Slowish turn-in on the climbs compared to traditional XC FRS bikes. Excellent pedaller, but not quite a mountain goat. Really makes up for it on the way down.
Large frame. Hope Minis Fox Vanilla RLC forx FOx Float RL shock
Bottom Line:
A confidence-inspiring ride, and great all-rounder. Focussed slightly more on the downward bits than the upward bits, but extremely capable climber nonetheless. Really plush and very active for a single pivot bike. Very limited feedback through the pedals - even in the granny over rocky climbs. No problem riding up the most technical bits of Cwn Carn and Afan forest trails in Sth Wales, and a total blast coming down again. Feels solid enough to hit anything at pace and just not worry about the bike. If you race XC - you should be looking at the Superlight. If you jump off big stuff - you should look at the Bullit. If you do a bit of both, but mostly trail/epic stuff - you should test this bike. It is a great solution. Good value compared to SL and Bullit. Excellent all-round performance.

This is marked a 2003 frame, I just got it 10/11/02. Beefy but minimalist frame and beefy single pivot rear triangle. Nice work on the drop-outs, a replaceable right dropout/and integrated derailer hanger keeps with Santa Cruz's philosophy of having a beefy derailer hanger for crisp shifting, but the availability of replacement is a plus, should a catastrophic event occur - seems like previous models lack created this demand. I esp. like the cool integrated bottle opener on the left dropout for those post ride microbrews... -Heavy gusseting on the headtube, I run a zoke Z1, perfect match with the fork. Who needs 1.5 standard? -5th element shock takes this single pivot design to the top of the pack. It offers a smooth, worry free, no-bobbing ride. Progressive Technologies has got it right. -Un-interupted seat tube=No worries interfeering with the shock and susp. assembly, look out on some bike designs. Full front triangle, with accomodations for TWO Waterbottles. Night riding battery storage - gotta have it you know. -5 Inches rear travel - great choice for a bike that blurs the line between Cross Country & Free Fide feel. -Available with wide choice of shocks - Fox Float for the weight weenies, and a variety of coils to choose from including the 5th element. -Great forethought installing accomodations for full length cable routing all around, OR run your cables with split housing if that's your preferance. Cool Ideas SC! WOW what more can I say!
Weaknesses:
None so far. Still dialing it in. Although I would like to have the option of running a V brake in the rear. (I have always run disc front/V Brake rear on my Superlight, and have grown to like this set-up as an option.)

This is a review after owning less then a month. This is a review for a 2003 frame. I love my 2001 Superlight, But So far this bike is by far the most fun bike I've ever owned. It was a great deal too, 1100 for a frame w 5th element is a great value. Who should buy? Anyone looking for a great bike that blurs the line between Freeride and Cross Country. This is not a super lightweight contender. It is also not a bike to take all of your insane drops with - it is beefy, but with time it would suffer I think, buy a SC Bullet/Super 8 if that's your gig. At about 30 or so lbs built up, its confidence inspiring and fast fast on the downhills, and flats, and climbing hasn't been too big an adjustment, but I can notice the extra weight. I don't care, Its great for a big guy looking for a great X Country bike, with extra beefy long travel feel. I weigh 218 and ride 3 to 4 times a week-year-round. It fits the bill perfectly as a fun trail bike, the other bikes will stay in the basement all the time now. If you want yours, be prepared to wait though, it took 6 months from order date to my LBS before I could see it.
