This bike is 6 years old and in pristine condition. The gentleman I purchased it from took immaculate care of this bike. I was in the market to buy a new bike and my buddy found this Bullit on craigs list. I looked at it and knew it was a tough bike. So I bought it. Today I put it through a couple of tests on south rim and it performed beautifully. Felt like a Abrams tank under me. I really think they hit the bullseye with this bike. Its strong and light. And did I mention almost brand new. What a steal.

Weaknesses:
Was lovin' the bike. Today(OCT 17/04), broke it. Not happy. On the right side of the rear triangle, it snapped and the piece on top the pivot bolt broke. It went all squirrelly on me, I figured it was my rear tire not my FRAME! ughh... Looks like I need a new rear triangle, time to polish I guess... or VP FREE??

Not happy about this breaking, all you hear about it is how reliable the bullit is... how it's bombproof, can take a beating. I just broke it, walking my dogs (pitties!) I broke my bullit... not cool. At the bottom of Peckerhead there are 18 built jumps/drops, I hit that at least 5 times a week, maybe there are limits... I dunno, going to grab a new triangle and either sell it and buy a VP free or see if I can break it again.

This bike can be built up any way you want! Strong enough for DH and just about light enough for a hardcore XC bike. My bike has had a fair amount of abuse, and is still going strong. I don't intend on changing the frame for some time yet!
Weaknesses:
The bushings do need changing every so often if you ride hard. The rear end moves about when they need changing. I had to change my 5-th element spring as it was too soft standard, all sorted now thanks to FT Tuned.

If you are someone who gets through a lot of frames, I stongly suggest this one! I have yet to see one broken......(touch wood)...

This bike is the poo. I just bought it a few days ago for $1000, an incredible deal considering it's fully customized and no stratches. I just sold a XC bike and bought this because I enjoy hauling ass downhill. My XC bike was pretty beat up just cuz it's not designed to be hammered like a bullit. Mine is set up for DH, I am considering throwing on a couple of chainrings upfront so I can attempt to climb it. For now, I will probably use it strictly for DH, I need to invest in some body armor. It will be a big transition coming from XC riding but I am looking forward to see how it handles. A lot of people have complained about Hanebrink forks. Mine feels pretty good, its plush, no problems yet. The thing I like about the bike is that I always have the option of making it a freeride bike. I would recommend this bike to anyone who likes to ride aggressively and is not concerned about weight. (mine weighs about 45 pounds) Can be set up as a Freeride or Downhill. Nuff said.

bought 2nd hand from another rider
Strengths:
-frame is very strong and reliable - accepts 8-inch rotors - minimal bob - very plush feel because of 5-th -easy maintenance
In shopping for a full suspension frame, I was looking for a good all-around bike that can be riden everywhere with more bias on the light freeride, and downhill capabilities. I paid a little more for this frame versus the other frames that were available but no regrets.
I now have more confidence in doing more technical lines. Doing DH is now much easier. Doing up to 4-foot drops is easy for me know. I just have to muster more courage to go higher but I'm sure there will be no problem with this frame when I decide to go higher.
On the 5th element, the bike came with a 325 lbs spring. The previous owner was about 170 lbs., like me. Even after reading the manuals and experimenting the shock settings. I still have problems with bottoming even at 2 foot drops. My basis is the bottoming feel and the bottoming damper on the shaft. I was afraid I'd destroy the shock/frame if I bottomed it often enough. I switched to a 375 which I still bottomed, and later to a 475 spring. As is turned out, I liked the feel of the 475 spring much better. My set-up is now volume adjuster 2 turns out, 110 psi, beginning stroke, full-out, ending stroke, 1.5 turns out. But what I don't understand is that a friend, weighing 260lbs, who has a similar frame-fork set-up, uses a 375lbs spring on his 5th. Please email me if you have any comments on this.
Also, putting a 7-inch fork is the best upgrade you can do for this baby.
What I like best about this frame is that you can just ride into tough terrain without having to worry whether your frame/bike can hold up to the punishment you give to it.
Having to save for a long time for the frame enabled me to try out and reseach on a lot of types and brands of aggressive XC/ freeride/DH frame. I'd like to give credit to my friend Rocky Lim, who was very generous in letting me try out his bullit, to help me in making the best choice.

Bottom Line:
I was just reflecting(sounds creepy)the other day that of the five full suspension bikes I have owned the Bullit has been the least trouble. No shifting issues, creaking pivots, blown shocks, bent shock bolts/bushings, etc. It just takes beating after beating without a "peep". It has survived a year of hard riding from a 235 lb less than gracefull pilot including ten days in B.C. and still rides as good as the first day I got it. All of this with nothing more than minimal maintenance(clean, lube, inspect). Even with its weight I can put the seat up and cruise pretty much anywhere including getting up some lung-busting climbs that I see many cats on other big bikes walking. It's predictability makes you push yourself into trying things you would not consider on other bikes. Last but not least, it's value to performance ratio is off the chart. All of the Bullit's competitors are typically hundreds more to get close to the same performance. After having owned a couple and extensively riding just about all similar bikes in this category I cannot imagine why I would really desire anything else. I loved SC skateboards back in the early '80s and their bikes rock no less if not probably more. 100% kickass!!!!

Let me preface by saying I use this as an xc bike......no hucking or true freerideing (in the northshore sense). Setup is on the xc'ish side. I love the plush ride, but its big detractor is the weight. 32 lbs complete, I feel like I've been run over by a truck after those 4+ hr rides. I'm grimacing on the climbs, but grinning all the way down. If someone could make a 6" travel bike w/a 6lb frame weight, I might consider trading this one in, but until that happens, I'll be sweating it out on the climbs to enjoy those grin-inducing descents. I understand it's a fr frame so I can't knock the weight too much.

Floating is the most powerful word I can use to sum up this bike. Note that I own a Superlight too and have forgotten it's even in my garage. I laugh because I first owned the Superlight and swore I'd never ride a hardtail again (I'm an old BMXer) and now I swear I'll never ride my squirly, bumpy, uncomfortable Superlight again (I let my friends borrow it when I ride). Compared to riding the Superlight over anything bumpy the Bullit is like a agile lightweight tank compared to an old Model T Ford without suspension. That's a decent way of looking at it from an exagerated point of view. I simply ride this bike in straight lines. I don't care if there's a smooth worn line up the trail that everyone else follows like glue, I just pass right by them making my own lines without losing any speed from getting jerked up in the air from a couple of little river rocks or soft gravel. I'm truly in love with this bike because of how fast I can ride it without limitations. I also love to jump. Oh, my poor Superlight with the straight laced spokes! On my Bullit I fly like Superman wihtout the worries of gravity pulling at me. On my Superlight I have to massage my wrists and ankles after I land (in a matter of speaking). The Bullit allows me to jump over and over and over and over again without resting becasue I don't feel the landings like I used too. I use 27 speeds and it works perfectly.
Weaknesses:
My chain has come off the front chainrings while going on super nasty down hill that I hit hard, but then I wouldn't have gone as fast or hit it as hard on another bike. I also found out that the bike is 42.5 pounds (I have a White Bros front fork) and was shocked because it feels to be around 32 pounds. I've tried Stinkys and they feel too rigid and heavy when in fact they are lighter. I don't know why.

Take it on an all day hack or go Downhilling - everything seems possible with this rig.Surpassed all my expectations, I doubt if there's a better long travel single pivot design out there. Confidence inspiring and genuinly does everything well. Nothing broken yet, nothing I DONT like. I've got mine set up with "relatively" light but strong components and I use it for hard XC ( like 50 miles .)Other posts testify to its strengths with the DH set.The 5th Element shock is a pedalling revelation and makes the bike capable of putting even Hardtails to shame in this Dept. Even if properly set up however, this is at the expense of small bump plushness but if you've got the lungs - it'll get you up just about anything. Rear end is super stiff and tracks beautifullly. No mech hanger = nothing to break ( c'mon your not going to break the dropouts - have you seen how thick they are? )and no ghost shifting. Single Crown forks with 5 1/4" travel feel a bit of a mismatch now with 7" on the back so Triple Clamps here we come. Oh, who said you can't use triple or even double Chainrings up front? Whaaaaaaaaaat......there's something wrong with your setup - this bike's designed to take them!! I'm running 27 speed and i can peddle in every single one of them.

Not enough time to ride. Kids, wife, job, Blah, Blah, Blah. Hard to bunny hop, but that's probably just me.

Strengths:
The 5th element is god-like, if well tuned, tight turns, manuals like a dream, easy to bunnyhop, takes big hits, not too hard to climb, durable.
Weaknesses:
The paint chips off too easily, but its not a big deal. I know better than to complain about climbing a 7" bike. Don't even bother trying a triple chainring on it, its pointless. Moderate brake jack, but i haven't upgraded to floating caliper yet
Similar Products Used:

Bike Setup:
Stock Freeride components (LX/XT comp w/ Race Face cranks etc.), Evil Chainguide, Fox Forx Vanilla 125, Hayes 6", Lock On grips, etc
Bottom Line:
This is the best bike of its kind. Withing 24 hours of getting it, I hit a 6 foot to flat, and made a steep climb I couldn't get on my hardtail. As far as climbing goes, the bike is heavy (34 lbs), but there is no bobbing, and it compensates by absorbing every root. I've built by bunnyhop to well over 2 feet on this bike, i've learned to do some dirt jumping, and I've gotten up to a 12 foot drop. It definitely build confidence on any trail, turns fast, and is suprisingly agile. I am wishing I had more travel up front, as this bike performs better with 6" plus, but Im not a double crown fan. Well Tuned, this bike can do some amazing, dare I say trials-esque, things, such as bunnyhopping up stair cases, back wheel hops, and precise wheelie drops. Makes a great urban bike because it can handle awkward transitions, and has a tendency to point the front wheel up. I can wheelie for about 100 yards on this bike, and manual for about 30 at best. It is a big investment, but it has also helped me improve my skills faster than my old bike. On bike setup, this bike can not use 3 or even 2 chainrings. If you have 3 on the bullit, you will quickly notice you must adjust your derailleur to use only 2 at a time. Even this creates problems. I recommend going with a nice strong chainguide like the evil (no mrp crap), and keeping a large middle ring type (40 tooth-ish)

* Handles well in the air, practically begs to go big. * 7" front and rear allow good handling on drops. * Looks good in Duke blue with a red Junior T. * Strong frame. * Handles downhill runs like a champ, sucks up drops yet 5th element eliminates bob on pedal stroke. * Instills confidence because the bike feels maneuverable to the point that you can try new things. * This bike has actually made me a better rider. I am doing more than I ever have before, and I just got the bike a couple of days ago.
Weaknesses:
Week ends are not long enough with the Bullit.
Similar Products Used:
The only other bike I have ridden that closely compares is the Intense Uzzi, but that bike was so heavy that it could not compete. I previously owned a Giant Warp, but I could not imagine going back to that bike now. In my experience, this bike is in a league of it's own.
Bike Setup:
Large frame, with Super X freeride build kit and Junior T fork.
Bottom Line:
I feel like a renewed rider. I look back on my ability pre-Bullit and those memories feel like years ago when it was only last week. After a short while of breaking this bike in I immediately began hitting the drops that I had only watched others hit before. The Bullit frame is a quality piece of work. By looking at it and sitting on it, you know that it's engineering is top notch. The build kit I used includes the northshoe Race Face cranks, which are awesome! Hayes hydraulic disc brakes are primo. This thing is set up to rock! The Junior T fork balances the bike with 7" in the front 7" in the rear. With this fork, the bike rides plush. Overall this bike creates a balance that is hard to match. With the travel of a downhill monster and a freeride dream, yet light enough to bust out the skills on the cross-country scene.
This bike is the ultimate, incomparable to anything I have seen.

Nothing, sorry. My other bike is a Specialized Stumpy, no comparison there.
Bike Setup:
2002 frame, bent seat tube version (bummer), hayes 8" rotors, super T, sram shorties, with 9.0 rear derailure. It also has tires and a seat. No high end weight saving stem or handlebars to save extra cost.
Bottom Line:
This is an updated review. I've had the bike now since February 2002, and I love it even more. The confidence in the bike seems to grow each time I take it out. I ride a variety of trails on it, including 10-15 mile climbs, without any problem. The suspension and rear pivot point vertually eliminate any pedal bob in the middle and small chainring.
Now the 5th element. I rarely make adjustments on the shock, I set it up as recommended by Progressive for my height and weight. The few adjustments I have made really changed the handling of the bike. Too much air, it got all bouncy, dropped the air and dialed in the pre-load adjustment, perfect. It bottomed a couple times on six-foot drops, so I put one turn in on the bottoming adjustment, and now it soaks it up like riding off a curb. Amazing versatility on the shock!
I had a guy come up to me on a ride and ask me about the bike because his friend was looking to get one. He was riding the new Intense Uzzi, with the 5th element. Well, he rode around on my bike a bit and was impressed by how it felt. Then the lift test. HE was absolutely shocked at the weight of the frame. With the super T my bike was much less than his Intense SLX running a single crown Fox fork. It was very noticeable in the ass end of the bikes. The intense just felt tail heavy. Here is the realy kicker. He spent $2,200 on the just the frame of the intense! My bullit frame wast $1,100. For two bikes in the same market, I could see no reason to go with the intense. He said the 4 bar links would be more supple at slow speeds and climbing, but who cares! The bikes are ment to be hauled down the hill as fast as you can go, who give a $h!t on slow speed. Look at how many world cup downhillers are moving BACk to the single pivot design. IT WORKS!
THIS bike plain ruins the competition. It can be set up to race downhill, cross-country, or gnarly freeride comps. (RED BULL pics, check the guy on the bullit!) IF you want all around performance in one bike, this is THE BIKE. Ride hard everybody, and be safe!

Here's a different angle. I tested this bike to see just how plush I could go without eating into my climbing/trail/epic ability. I do trails and epics, and have never jumped off anything higher than my head. You might think I am looking at the wrong bike - but I wanted to find out for myself - and sh*t it comes close. You know what it is designed for, and what it can to under the control of gravity. But I rode it for over 150 miles in less than a week - over mostly singletrack/epic stuff - and then did a 12 hour night time endurance XC race on it. And I can honestly say that I did not complain about the weight penalty or climbing ability once. Seriously. Think about that for a minute... I am no preacher for SC (I don't own one - I'm not a brand biggot - but also not a gram-counter)... but that is quite an accolade. Sure, I could have been on a lighter, whippier bike in those conditions, but I didn't *need* to be - and that is what freaked me out. So if you are thinking about a big-hit free-ride bike - but worried about whether it pedals/climbs, or about the weight penalty, you should check this one out. If you are after a trail bike that can take the big hits - check out the Heckler 03. Two sides of the same coin.

To begin with, everyone i asked recommended a Bullit (even Magazines and shops that don't sell them) - this was a good sign. Brookvale built the bike up in 1 day, even set the shock up for me. At the shop it looked great, then I rode it...... WOW!!! This is mad!! Eats anything, plush as hell and can handle the big drops!!! Single pivot stiffness with marshmellow plushness!! The shock makes the Bike- it takes it from good to number 1. The boxxers are perfect for the rear, and once the brakes bed in it will be great. The 5th element makes the bike. It is plusher than my Ac was, and sprints as well as my 23lb. Cannondale hardtail did. No single pivot related issues with the shock (No brakejacking). It's amazing! At this point in time, the only downside was the price - the insurance money from my tricked out AC and 'dale only just covers it.......

I've done aggressive trail riding with it. IT IS THE DO-ANYTHING-BIKE FOR BIG GUYS WHO BREAK STUFF! In my "big guy" opinion, it is the most well-rounded frame on the market ("jack of all trades & master of none"). Bottom Line:
Took nearly 3 months to build, which was Ok since I started in Jan. Went over budget (total $3700) and over-weight with the Super-T (~37lbs), but got a great deal from a LBS that was closing :( saved ~$175 bucks. I should have gone with the North Shores from the start. Braided hoses were scratching the frame so I took a clear vinyl hose and slice down one side and wraped the hose near the headtube. Had to chop of 2 inches of seatpost to get the seat further in. (new 2002.5 bikes have a straight tube) Semi-Moto style grips are cool. I occassionally flip 'em around so the flanges are on the outside. The ride is plush. Sick-tight. My favorite thing is this bike has SEX appeal- especially when polished throughout. When I ride around the 'burbs, I get lots of stares. It was like when my girlfriend and I test drove the new Mini Cooper. Those suckas on the Huffys and Target/Costco bike look down in shame when I roll through.

EVERYTHING!!! Frame design is amazing...just begs to be jumped and dropped.

Bottom Line:
You'll never really understand how great this bike is untill you totally let go of the brakes and start doing the stuff you thought you couldn't or shouldn't do. It's a f.ing marvel. Santa Cruz has built a bike that IS the benchmark for all other bikes to measure themselves against. Great for urban riding / great for downhill / great for freeride / buy this bike and forget about having to own anything else. I'd bet one of my testicals that you'd never regret it. Oh yeah, if you break the frame...they give you a new one. (though I have yet to know anyone to accomplish such a feet)

Weaknesses:
Brake jacking due to single pivot design....Easy to fix, use front brake only. Why brake at all? The beauty of single pivot is the simplisity of design. Four bar is awesome but when bearings start to go....pull out the wallet.

Bottom Line:
This bike loves speed. Me too! Wonderful jumper. Well balanced and very forgiving. Excellent for wheelies too. Going from hardtail to dualy is a learing experience. No bob pedaling is impressive. Feels like a hardtail. Climbs great! Yet on the down hills, just hold on...little finesse is needed. It will gobble up everything. Its fast ohh so fast! Bike Setup:
Bombshell Wendy's, Hayes hyd disks, XT, king, face, mavic, Geax blade 2.25's, and a plushy nashbar mtb seat for my happy butt. weights out at 33.5 lbs.
Bottom Line:
i've only been riding it for about 3 months but after this weekend at pedro's fest i feel it's time to pipe up with comments.
The bike did very nicely in the xc singletrack. offcamber turns, rooted, with powder like dry dirt, climbed right along with intermediate xc riders on 25lb rigs. no probs.
Took it to Jiminy Peak the last day and smoked my pads of on rocks, loose 40degree ski trial decents with 2' drainage/erosion culverts crossing the trail. Bullit handled flawlessly through the "freak" factor of ripping down a very long decent with cross ditches. found some very twisty singletrack through the woods that paralelled other ski runs...sick stuff guys and gals, for me anyway. some serious 70 degree drops rutted and littered with root and rock....again bullit performed flawlessly. get on the bike, keep your elbows up and ride like a motocrosser and you'll rip through anything out there. if it stands up as well as advertised i will ride this bike for a very long time. note: this bike seems to climb better with a lower seat height. with higher seat heights the front end wanted to lift with a 120 mm stem unless your chest was on the bars. a 135 may remedy this. I'm givin ia all the flame loads for now as it exceeded my performance expectations. will follow up if there are any opinion changes.

Bottom Line:
Having ridden a 2001 Bullit for an entire season last year, the 2002 was a huge experience for this rider. It was like someone took the Bullit and gave it a whole new life. I loved my 2001, but the idea of having an infinitely adjustable rear end was just too much to pass up. The change was so worth it. Drops and manouvers that i had trouble with on the 2001 are now smoothened out by the 5th. The technology is there, i'm not sure how it works better than the Fox, but it really does. Running a 2002 Monster up front makes the bike feel very balanced overall, even with it's reputation for being a pig of a fork. I was running a Shiver for a short time before making the jump to the Monster, and it made a huge difference. Total control, an excellent riding experience. Alot of my friends that ride the Bullit find themselves questioning their choice of rides for this summer, kicking themselves for not making the jump to Santa Cruz for 2002. I'm sure there will be a whole load more Bullits out for 2003. Get one and see. You won't be disappointed.

It takes a beating and keeps on freaking me out along the way! Just remember to hold on to your handlesbars. I use to be a big pusy. Now I'm a MAN! BABY! It's sleek, smooth and it is definately at the cutting edge. What an advancement from the 2001 models. I shaved off 25 seconds on this short downhill course that I do too. And that's a ton of distance. I can't beleive how well it climbs. Unbelievable! The paint chips off like every body says. The 5th Element Shock really works. You'll never be able to go back to the old school shocks. The only problem is setting the dam thing up. Even with the quick start guide and manual, it was time consuming and confusing. Too many bloodly adjustments. The manual could be improved with a clearer illustration and description of each of the parts. Play with it and eventually you'll figure it our and will be amazed. Call customer service if you have trouble with your 5th. They are very knowledgeable and helpful. Also, I can't say enough about Santa Cruz's before and after-sales service. Finally got this sucker after a long wait. The medium was a bit small, so I had to change out the stem and seatpost, but since then it has been butter. This thing is confidence inspiring. It'll freeride, dh and do drops with the best of 'em, and can actually climb. This is no XC machine by any means, but after some getting used to, it climbs really well...virtually no bob! The 5th element is a great shock for the riding I do, and it's infinitely adjustable. My first day it bottomed out on a 6 foot ramp and then bucked me off on a small off camber drop. I took it home, made some minor adjustments to the shock and have had NO problems since.
AT 37 pounds it's pretty light, considering the components. I'm not going to get rid of my XC bike any time soon, but rest assured it isn't going to get much use anymore. I should mention that a friend of mine raced his Bullit (set up w/ XC components) at the 24 hours of Snowshoe, and did extremely well. Whether you want to set it up as an XC machine, freeride or downhill cruiser, the Bullit can do it all.

Bottom Line:
SWEEET! Confidence inspiring. I knew I'd like this bike, but I had no idea it would be this much.
The stock 5th Element spring was too soft for me too, but Santa Cruz offered to swap it out for a heavier one for just the cost of shipping if mine was still in "new" condition. They even offered to even install the spring on the shock if I'd send it back. I didn't want to be without the bike even for a day so opted to order a heavier spring from my LBS and install it myself. It arrived in 4 days. Santa Cruz Customer Service Rocks!!
I actually found the shock easy to set up, just read the manual and set everything to default for my weight, then tuned it a bit as it wore in and I got used to it. I ran solid housing on the rear derailluer cable, and routed it low. I've had no ghost shifting, ever.
I can hang with the bigger bikes in the really rough stuff and pedal away from them with ease on the flats and the climbs, everyone notices that, and comments on it. Using the 5th Element, you can tune it to pedal like a hard tail but still soak up the hits like a 7 incher should. Absolutely rails in the twisties. I think I actually corner faster on the Bullit than on my DH bike.
This bike is fun! I was grinnin' for two weeks after my first long ride on it. It has renewed my passion for the sport.

2002 Large Bullit FR Kit, Fox Vanilla 125RLC, 8" Hayes hydros, Mavic 321D, raceface..bla bla doesn't matter..~30lbs
Bottom Line:
Read for useful info-- I am 200lbs, 6' tall and the large Bullit is perfect. I ordered a medium but am now glad I switched to the Large. If you are fairly heavy(over 190), go with the large because the 5th element comes with a stronger spring on the large(with the medium it would be too much sag)(or get a stiffer spring for the 5th element - good luck). I've been riding the bike now for 3 weeks. This bike climbs anything my Xcountry does, for its weight it can take some major abuse. I come from a Xcountry racing backround so I am just starting to drop up to 5'+. I find the 5" Fox front shock(absolutely pimp) needs a stiffer spring to go any higher (I got the fork with the bike so extra springs cost $25US). I got a "special" color it was extra$ but haven't noticed paint issues like some of the other reviewers(if you care about scratches). This bike is setup more for freeride but can laugh at Xcountry trails and riders as well if you are a strong rider you will not notice the weight. It has a responsive geometry for Xcountry with a 5" fork. This bike rocks in all kinds of conditions, with the 5th element there's no bob. I am going to put a SuperT or Monster on this sucker and try out a downhill or 2 later in the season and see what this thing can really do. If you go up as well as down get the Fox or Z1 freeride, otherwise 02SuperT. This is lots of bike for lots of coin that makes lots of smiles. It will save your ass in hairy situations and chicks dig it. Spend less on a car and shell out for this!! You will have more fun..

Amazing ride! It takes a while to dial in the suspension with the 5-way adjustable shock but once you've got it, it's totally sweet. Took the bike right out of the box and hit our regular trails, the factory settings on the shock aren't too far from what I thought to be the right settings for me. After consulting the chart that came with the shock, I made the necessary adjustments to compensate for my weight. Next ride was noticeably better! I think I'll be doing a few more adjustments before I find the "sweet spot" for me but the fact that a few turns with a hex wrench gave me a totally different ride should tell you a lot about the potential of the 5th Element Shock! I was riding through rock gardens and rock-ridden chutes like there was nothing there! OK, I'm exaggerating a bit. I rode a hardtail before I got my Bullit (first FS rig) so the difference was just night and day--unbelievable what I've been missing out on. Get the bike or frame if you get the chance. If it weren't for the dinky paint job (scratches and chips galore on the first ride), this would be my ride to heaven.

Strengths:
Relative light weight; doesn't bob; climbs and descends well; stable at speed; bullet-proof reliability.
Weaknesses:
Paint chips easily.
Similar Products Used:

Bike Setup:
Manitou X-vert DC Fork (for light weight), Fox Vanilla Coil Shock, Rohloff Speed Hub, Rhino Lites, Hayes Hyd. Disc, Monkey Lt. Lo-Rise, Thomson Post & Stem; Turbine LP's with Rock Ring
Bottom Line:
This bike was set up primarily for urban assault, but also for moderate-sized dirt jumps and downhill runs. At slightly below 35lbs, it's heavy for cross-country, but with the Rohloff hub, it still has the gearing range of a 3x9 drive train, so it can be, and is, ridden uphill. Since the Rohloff uses only one chain ring, I don't lose the chain on jumps (I use a rock ring and a 53-tooth road ring with the teeth cut off mounted inboard of the chain ring to keep the chain from jumping). The Rohloff, though heavy, shifts flawlessly, and seems to be bullet proof. It has caused no problems in the year and a half that I've had the bike, even with repeated 6-1/2 foot stair-gaps, flat-bottoming onto concrete. The Manitou X-Vert DC, at 4.7" travel is really the weak point in this setup, (though I've had no problems with it), so I'll soon be putting a Marzocchi QR-20 on it, bringing front travel more in line with rear travel. The added travel, strength, and thru-axle are worth it for the extra safety. I also plan to add a 5th Element shock, which will take the rear travel from 6 to 7 inches. I speced. the bike out myself, and have been so happy with the setup that I have not changed anything but the stem since I bought it. It is extremely stable, versatile, and a hell of alot of fun to ride on everything but long, steep climbs. The rear even bobs less than my S-Works FSR. It isn't a full-blown downhill rig, and with 6 inches of travel and sub-35lb. weight, it won't be as stable on big jumps, so bear that in mind if you're looking for big air. Other than 2 rear rims flat-spotted on stair jumps, and a bent Rohloff chain tesioner (if it had been a derailleur, it would have been ripped completely off), I have done nothing more than regular maintenance. All-in-all, it's a great, versatile bike that I've never regretted buying.

This bike has brought back the fun in mountain biking for me. I had pretty much reached my limits at to what I could do on the Stumpjumper, so nothing was challenging. The bullit is a whole other story. I feel like a beginner again, and the bike is just waiting for me to catch up. The super T will hit a curb at speed and I'll barely feel it. For all of you orange county riders out there who ride Aliso Woods, the bullit flies down the Rock-it trail. All I have to do is point it in the right direction and let off the brakes. So, far the 5th element has been perfect. I just read the manual and went off the guidelines. What ever I didn't like, I just change on the trail. If you want an all around bike, get the Bullit, a Z1 MCR would be better for those using it for Cross Country.

The best description I can give is that it is a dirt bike without a motor - solid, tracks like it is on rails, and takes it all in stride. Oh yeah, and it looks absolutely badaxe! freaking indestructible frame that still is able to climb like a spider. The geometry is perfect. Entire bike was way lighter than I thought it would be. Looks wicked. Rides plush and solid. Flys through the air with ease. Very confident machine. Came with 8" rotors (to my surprise!)
Weaknesses:
OK, the paint ain't the greatest. (try this: use some tape around the cables where they route so they can't give or take any slack - cable rub solved. and wax the thing with a couple of coats of good car wax while its still new - shiny longer.)

Strengths:
The frame is really solid. Downhill, this is one awesome machine, geomotery seems to have been worked out perfectly. Combination of a decent front shock with this rear end makes for a bike that descends anything you want to try from fast uneven blasts to drops and severly rocky rides, yet still climbs amazingly well despite supposed problems with single pivot designs. Stay in the seat where possible on steep loose ascents and you'll go past any XC legend on his hard tail!
Weaknesses:
The paint is just a total pain!! My frame is soon going to be silver, the (yellow) paint wears off everywhere from cable rubbing. I have got so much 3M contact on the thing now it happens in so many different spots. And cable ties securing cables. Ghist shifting - yeah it happens, but once you realise this you are ready for it once you need to put on the power again and realise you're now in a smaller ring.
Bike Setup:
Rock Shock Psylo Race Fox VAnilla Rc - so 6" travel setup on rear not 5th element 7". XT mostly. Hayes hyrdaulics - so solid!!
Bottom Line:
Paint wear is becoming a pain!!! But this bike will take you anywhere you want to go. It is capable of much more than I am throwing at it, but it still enables me to ride way way harder DOWNHILL than I have before, and gives you the confidence and ability to continue to push what you will attempt. Downhill it has totally lived up to my expectations of what it is capable of. UPHILL it has been a total surprise - where we ride, every downhill has to be paid for in sweat and lactic acid getting uphill first. This bike has amazing traction uphill once you learn to stay in the saddle whenever possible. Loose crappy surfaces I used to skirt around I now truck straight through. It will leave XC rigs behind on this stuff. The long gradual climbs they will get you if they are fit enough with their lighter bikes but I am still really pleasantly surprised that where I thought this bike was going to be a major drawback it is actually really strong uphill in sections and overall is still a decent performer - unless you compare it to a spindly full-on XC racer setup (which you shouldn't take on a lot of the trails in my area anyway if you want the bike in one piece in a year's time, whereas the Bullit soaks it all up). This bike could be XC raced with a light wheelset etc.
Bottom line: if you all your riding is on trails; if you want a bike that can take any downhill descent you are game to try and even more that you aren't; if you have to climb what you ride down; if you aren't a weight crazed XC racer - this is the bike.
