Strengths:
Simple, bombproof, impossible to screw up. Lifetime tool.
Weaknesses:
Initial cost, but bear in mind it will *never* wear out.

Bottom Line:
Make the investment in a tool you will use every few weeks for as long as you ride and the chain standard remains as it is now. It's a no brainer tool. Measuring with a steel ruler is fine, but it's not simple. You have to tension the chain by pulling on the cage at the same time you are trying to measure wear. The Rohloff is so much more simple, IMO it's worth making this task much simpler for years to come. It's a lifetime investment unless the chain link length standard changes. Give shi#mano enough time, and I'm sure they'll come up with a reason to change the chain link standard ;-) I based my value rating on the fact it's a lifetime investment. In that context, how an be of lesser value?

Strengths:
Dead simple to use. No moving parts to break or wear out. Comes with a protective pouch.
Weaknesses:
A bit pricier than Park's tool. Much more expensive than a good ruler.

Bottom Line:
This is the ultimate go/no-go chain wear guage. If the guage lays flat on the chain, install a new chain. No disassembly, no calibration necessary.
It's two sided, providing a "high tolerance" side for softer aluminum drivetrains, and a "low tolerance" side for more durable steel drivetrains.
The tool is machined out of high grade steel. Treat it with respect and it should last a lifetime.
