$450.00 | | Purchased At: | Xtreme Bikes, Aguadilla PR | | Strengths: | This review is for 2005 frame. Light, responsive, great handling trials | | Weaknesses: | none so far | | Bike Setup: | Sram X9, XTR crankset, Mavic CrossMax SL Disc, Rock Shock Reba 80mm | | Bottom Line: | After giving it a lot of thought and riding full suspension bikes for 2 years, I have decided to build an aluminum hardtail racer. Great XC race bike! You really feel the responsiveness of this bike when climbing steep hills, which is where most races are defined. Handles pretty well all technical sections and descents and so far is not too bad on your back during a two hour ride.

$550.00 | | Purchased At: | greggs cycles (frame) | | Strengths: | very strong & light frame (3.3 lbs); perfect geometry for NW trails: short top tube, low stand-over design, high BB & stiff but compliant chainstays. Exceptional HT for both technical and epic rides | | Weaknesses: | straight pipe tubing kinda plain... | | Similar Products Used: | Fisher Mt Tam, Specialized Stumpjumper | | Bike Setup: | '04 model; personally built w/ new 100mm Fox Float RLC, King Headset, Thomson stem, LP Carbon riser bars, full XT drivetrain, WTB Laser hubs/Mavic 717 wheelset, Hayes brakes, 2.35 Kenda Kenetics - IT Rules | | Bottom Line: | tough lite trail bike, good for urban riding. climbs trails like a goat & carves thru turns like a dream!

$600.00 | | Strengths: | Looks, geometry-handling, stifness-to-weight... | | Weaknesses: | Top paint layer chipping away | | Similar Products Used: | GT, Marin, Scott, Cannondale | | Bike Setup: | SID WC forx, XO der+shift, XTR V-brakes+levers, XT hollowtechII crank+BB, DT240+Mavic517+DTrevolution wheels, Tune+Kore+Titec cockpit | | Bottom Line: | Purchased as frameset. Have been riding it since mid 2001 and upgrading/replacing parts along the way. Perfect 18.5" frame geometry for my 6ft height. Leightweight (frame = 1550 grams on the scale). Stiff, but unlike e.g. GT triple triangle not too hard on your butt&spine. Very good handling but still stable on quick descents. Probably the nicest hardtail bike I've ever ridden. If only the upper transparent paint layer didn't chip away......but only a minor imperfection in my opinion. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$750.00 | | Purchased At: | Hup Leong | | Strengths: | The paintjob is very good cos' it didn't peel though I put it thru' some tough times. Most of my previous bikes will show obvious scratches or peel-offs.
The frame is light yet tough. In my opinion, this is one of the tougher frames of its class. Most of these lightweight frames will have slight cracking sound at the insertion point of the seatpost but my Vertex70 doesn't.
Ride quality is good among its class. The rear triangle isn't built as thick as other bikes. This enable it to flex a little when it gets bumpy. personally, I find that the flexing is great in absorbing the minor bumps & it doesn't makes you feel like you are riding on jelly.
Geometry is great as it is very comfortable even on long rides. Climbing is a breeze in most cases. | | Weaknesses: | The price??? | | Similar Products Used: | Scott Comp Racing 03', GT Avalanche 1.0 02', Whyte PRST-1 | | Bike Setup: | Vertex 70 frame, Avid Mech. Disc brakes, Rock Shox SID Race, SRAM X.0 shifters + rear deraileur, XT front deraileur, Scott Hotrod handlebar, Eggbeaters pedals, Mavic x.317 + WTB Laserlite hubs, Maxxis Flyweight 330 tires, 04' XT crankset, SRAM PC-99 chain, Thomson seatpost, Thomson stem, Selle Italia Genuine Gel saddle | | Bottom Line: | Though the frame is a lil' pricey for a aluminium frame, but after riding it for the past few months (Be it road rides or off-road rides), I would say it is money well-spent.
Even my cycling pals can see the differnce when I ride with em', especially when I climb. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
