Date Reviewed: April 1, 2004
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $800.00
Purchased At:Pedlar Cycles - Toronto
Strengths:An amasing bike overall. The SRAM components are far superior to Shimano. The grip shift is fast and smooth. The brakes are always strong and silent. The SRAM chain and cog set have lasted exceptionally well.
Weaknesses:The rear rim was laced terribly with cheap spokes from the factory. The 14 gauge spokes broke constantly. With the spokes relaced using 15-14-15 spokes I have not touched it in over a year and its the same rim and hub. Obviously a flaw on Rocky Mountain's part by under specing the spokes.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Rockhopper, Mongoose SX, Norco Nitro
Bike Setup:Stock except for the rear spokes.
Bottom Line:The bike is great for all cross country riders but if you are heavy like me, upgrade the wheels right from the get go. It saves aggravation later and allows you to get the full potential from the otherwise flawless mountain bike. Wheel Tech gets Two thumbs down, while everything else gets two thumbs up.

Favorite Trail:anything with sharp bumpy turns
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $880.00
Purchased At:NOW Sports
Strengths:Comfort of the geometry, SRAM shifters and brakes, responsiveness, bump absorption of Marzocchi fork
Weaknesses:none yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Similar Products Used:Specialized StumpJumper, Fisher Paragon
Bike Setup:stock (Rocky bars, seatpost, SRAM 9.0 drivetrain)
Bottom Line:My first mountain bike and I'm very happy. It accelerates very well and goes where I want it to. I can hit tree roots at high speeds and the bike doesn't get thrown off course. The brakes are very effective and quiet. It feels much more solid than the StumpJumper and Paragon I tested. It is a work of art - I can just stare at it in admiration.

Date Reviewed: August 5, 2001
Favorite Trail:Nicole's Pole, Burnaby Mountain
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $260.00
Strengths:purchased as frame only 14", X-small CDN$375
light, strong, good geometry.
good climber, able descender.
x-small frame fits smaller riders.
front facing seat collar slot keeps dirt out
Canadian company. Buy Canadian!
Weaknesses:Rear derailleur hanger bends easily.
Does not have clips for a rear disc brake hose like the higher-end Rocky Vertex frame has.
Similar Products Used:'91 Rocky Thunderbolt was my previous ride.
Also test rode 2000 GT Zaskar X but did not buy it due to lack of rear tire clearance.
Bike Setup:Z2 BAM 80mm w/ Hayes hyd. front disc, XTR rear V brake+lever
32/20T 8sp double steel rings w/ Envy bash guard, XT BB
PDM 636 clipless DX pedals
8sp XTR rear der, 9sp Deore front der
8sp XT/XTR shifters, 11-28T XT cogs
Hugi Disc front hub, XT rear
Panaracer Fire XC Pro 2.1" tires
Future upgrades: rear disc & wheel
Bottom Line:A nice riding frame. Since I purchased it as a frame only and put my own parts on it, I can't comment on the stock parts mix. Handles very well with 80mm travel fork. Stiff, nice climbing and cornering. Has clearance for fat tires in the rear (2.3 should fit fine, 2.5 might fit). Allows lowering of seat all the way down for technical descending--no silly seat-tube mounted water bottle screws. Includes rear disc tabs for future use, but doesn't have clean routing for rear hydraulic hose like the Rocky Vertex. The rear derailleur hanger is a weak design. I now have several spares that I swap in when I bend one. I have the bike store straighten a few at a time to save weekly visits. Good hard tail for general XC use. Fun on descents. Excellent value.

Favorite Trail:UBC
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $1200.00
Purchased At:Westpoint
Strengths:Hell of a good looking paint job. Good Value.
Weaknesses:Can't find any yet
Bike Setup:changed pedals to Axion flat pedals. 45psi fork (stiff).
Bottom Line:I love the way they painted the frame (Holographic blue). You need a pump to adjust the Z4 but for the price, I am not complaining.
My Strato came with SRAM 9.0 Grip shifter, which I prefer over trigger shift. Cable tension does not change as much as trigger shifter and it's spring loaded, so shifting both wasys feels same.
Shimano Deore hubs does not support Disk breaks.

Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $1200.00
Purchased At:Westpoint
Strengths:Light, good SRAM 7.0 and 9.0 components, good price ($1200 CAD)
Weaknesses:None directly related to the bike itself
Bottom Line:This is my first real bike, and after learning to ride trails on it, I can't think of a better bike to learn on!

However, last weekend the rear hub locked up on me twice! The shop I bought it at said they haven't seen anything like that happen before, but they had no problem replacing the entire rear wheel, so I could right back on the trail again! I hope it isn't a common problem with the Shimano Deore hubs used on this bike... It shouldn't be.

Other than that, I am more than happy with this bike!

Favorite Trail:anything remotely a path
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $1200.00
Purchased At:Bungay's
Strengths:-good on climbs
-light
-great shocks (marzocchi z.4 air)
Weaknesses:-the tires keep gettin flat (but thats the tires) so none
Similar Products Used:Nothig amounts that ive ridden!
Bike Setup:how i bought it
Bottom Line:A really great bike! good for starters and can handle anythin you can throw at it. it takes a little getting used to but it dosnt take long. So 5 "chilis" for both value because of the price ($1200 Canadian) and 5 "chilis" for the durability and performance. So if your just startin out and want somethin with a reasonable price then the 2001 Stratos is for you!
