Date Reviewed: August 8, 2004
Favorite Trail:Anne Springs Close Greenway
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $300.00
Purchased At:College Cycles - Rock Hill
Strengths:Great bikes start with great frames. I'm not the kind that leaps tall buildings in a single bound, but for the tight trails here in SC, it rocks!
Weaknesses:None that I've found yet. Like I said, I don't go jumping off cliffs, so the dropout failure other's have mentioned on the 2000 model may never occur with my 2001. Hope not, I LIKE this bike!
Similar Products Used:Schwinn Sierra (OK, not much, but it got me into the sport!)
Bike Setup:Bought the frame (2001 model) seperate and decked it out myself: RS Judy air (5" travel) forks, Cane Creek Pro HS, Mavic CrossLand wheels, Kooka cranks, Phil Wood BB, XT shifters, Hayes HMX-1 6" discs. Total: $1300!
Bottom Line:I needed something that could handle the tight, narrow, near-freeride trails in the SC woods better than the old-school ride I had, and this machine delivers it! Roots? no problem! Enen some "trials" like hazards it handles without complaint. Makes me feel like I'm better than I really am. OK, it's probably because it's made for this stuff and my old ride wasn't, But if it works...

Bottom line? Someday I hope to be a good enough rider to realy be able to appreciate what this baby can do! Who should buy it? anyone who wants a really nice hardtail bike for the tricky stuff!

Favorite Trail:Flying ostrich
Duration Product Used:6 months
Purchased At:900 canuck
Strengths:The fork, the paint, the shifting stuff, the brakes and the frame
Weaknesses:The bar is a bit skinny, rhyno lights are a bit light duty
Similar Products Used:Norco Torrent
Bike Setup:8 inch rotor in the front, mavic rims with gazz, and kenda kolossal in the rear
Bottom Line:People are saying that they've broken the frame, and I know why. On 2000 rocky's (either hard tail or 3d link), you can't pogo with disc brakes. Even if you hop on the back wheel and it doesn't break, the frame gets weird stresses on it and will snap on a drop. You don't buy this bike to do trials, so stay off that back wheel!!
Other than that, which really isn't a con (you don't buy a porsche to haul around lumber), this bike is killer. It won't kill you climbing, but still feels like a pig on the downhill. Unless I do break it, this will be my bike for a lot longer.

Strengths:Follow up post as i broke the first one I didnt have Disco brakes so it wasnt that, cracked along the bottom of the lower driveside stay, no problems though RM dealer warrantied it sweet as.
Super Sweet like the way it rides bit of an ox uphill though, tried it with some 6" Manitou DC's and it made the bike sooooo much better to decend on. Impressed by follow up by rocky
Weaknesses:The crack obviously but as i got the warranty I think i have noutin to winge abot if this one breaks then it wond be so cool, although i did do a bit of concrete jumpin like 4foot flat to flat, so you cant expect stuff to hold up forever.
Similar Products Used:Had an old ass GT, sweet steel. then a KHS cruiser nice but also cracked
Bike Setup:JR T's raceface magura and XT with hope and 521's
Bottom Line:All good if the thing doesnt break again I rode it for about a year then it broke so that aint cool hopefully it wont happen again, but for the meantime very good follow up service.

Bottom Line:Second day riding at Ladies Man, right at the top of the trail, the seatpost snapped. Got it replaced under warrenty. One week later, the rear triangle starts to develop some play, take it to my LBS and they say I have broken the frame. What the f*#!?. What a piece of sh*t. Strengths:Fork, Frame, Brakes, tires
amazing, good balance performance, strength and weight
Weaknesses:The Cranks were loose when I got it new, but other than that nothing so far. The usually effects of 5 inches in the front on climbs, but its worth it. maybe the seat?
Similar Products Used:schwinn, moab, kona's
Bike Setup:marzocchi z-1, rhyno lite rims, michelin hot S tires, RAD frame, xt drive (mostly lx front, xt shifters, rear) Hayes hydros, race face bar and post, bontrager stem
Bottom Line:Great bikes for hard core trail riding, and hardtail freeriding. Not to heavy or boggy to hang with the XC guys either.
Strong and dependable. not a XC race, but great playbike. Awesome hardtail DH, salom.

Bottom Line:Rocky should strength up the rear triangle on this North Shore ready bike.I broke the frame in 2 place on the non-drive train side. They should also use a Race Face North Shore crank instead of the weak Prodigy, and they should use a stronger rear hub.I ride it every day doing sign drops, north shore, and urban ride dropping drops that are mostly 6'or higher. But besides the frame and the crank the bike rocks

Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $2700.00
Purchased At:Bert and Mac's Cycle
Strengths:Everything, frame especially. CANADIAN MADE. Great handbuilt wheels. For the most part great component selection. Paint is retro, love it.
Weaknesses:My race face Prodigy Seat post bent on second ride, probably a lemon.
Its pricey but worth it I think. Paid $2700 canuck for it.
Swamp thing tires arent suited for hardpack but hook well in mushy stuff and snow.
Similar Products Used:GT, Slayer demoed, trek 7000 demoed. Sugar demoed
Bike Setup:Pretty stock 2001, Thompson Elite post now and wider azonic bars. XT cassette just 'cause.
Bottom Line:I have done many many hours of research before this 2001 season on many different bikes. I really value this site for rider feedback, helped me out a lot but please keep in mind to weed out the idiots. Really glad I got a hard tail. The Reaper for me is IT. I am 6 foot 7 about 240 so it really limited me and what I could get and what would last. The frame on the Reaper is top notch, designed to last, not be the lightest. Dont be a poser, if pounds are an issue look elsewhere, not that this bike is an anchor, but its not an exotic light weight!! I ride this bike x country but it leans on the side of freeride/trailbike more than full x country. (doesnt matter to me) I love this thing. Forks are super plush and tough. Great wheels, and drivetrain. NO probs with SRAM, dont expect any either. Never had SRAM before but Im very pleased. Swapped bars for wider ones and the post failed (have no idea why, like I said probably just a bad post). Fairly compliant for all aluminum frame, its easy to ride it for 4 or 5 hours. Disks are great but can be finicky at times, just keep them clean! I also really like the Trek 7000 and 8000 series, nice stuff too and wicked value. GT is good too, also looked hard at the Avalanche and Zaskar series but wanted something different and Canadian. Rocky totally delivered the full deal for me and I have no regrets. Its still early and I will post again later in season but Im super pleased. My bro and some friends own Rocky, they all love them. Have fun and just ride..........

Weaknesses:breaks like a twig

Bottom Line:i love hardtails because i do a bit of trails when i'm not riding the shore but if i'm going to kill myself because of a snapped frame it's not worth it. Buy the reaper but save the bill 'cause you're going to have to warranty it!

Strengths:Frame(build strength geometry looks)
fork (stiff plush flawless)
wheels (hand built bulletproof)
Weaknesses:price, drivetrain
BB creaked and loosened within a couple of miles
I dont think shimano w/prodigy is the best match
Similar Products Used:Rocky Hammer ,SC Chameleon
Bike Setup:Stock (lx/xt prodigy,hayes hydro,rhinolytes, Z1 Qr20)
+ spotbrand ring guard, shorter raceface stem
Bottom Line:The confidence this bike instills is amazing. It opened so many lines to my riding (drops chutes trials jumping). But being a hardtail you still gotta use style. Unlike a F/S rig which just soaks every thing up. It loves steep twisty ass touchin the tire drop-ins. Manuals are a little tedious because of the weight from the fork. But its real easy tweak out on big airs. Aside from some weak links in the drive train this bike rips. Definitly check it out if
your an aggresive rider.

Purchased At:trevor, the guy who had this before.
Strengths:its a real strong frame and the colors no other bikes can match.
Weaknesses:I thought this would be as strong as the brodies holeshot. but i was wrong, they have a much stronger frame.
Similar Products Used:Torrent, holeshot, bigshot.
Bike Setup:i build the bike myself, since i didn't have enough money to buy the whole thing. but now i've got a drop off on there, mavic 521 on XT disc hubs, 24 spds to lessen the weight. Personally, i think the 9 spd r useless. XT and LX components, snafu bmx pedals, oury grips, riser bar, shorty stem, shi_ty v-brakes (upgrading to hayes or XT), LX cranks with ring god ( want kooka cranks >.<), 2.3 tires ( getting nokian 2.6 front and back).
Bottom Line:THe bike is the best i haf ridden. Even dualies won't feel as good as this!! i have done a lot of drops and urban riding, it feels so much like a bmx which is great!! i hate bikes with the XC feel, those frames and always oversized and i haf to lean forward to hold the bars, unlike the rearer i shortened the seat post and it feels great^^. i've heard a lot of stuff that the reaper is not as strong as the other hardcore hardtails like torrent and holeshot. The tubes on those are squared in the rear, and the head tube part of where the shock's shaft goes though is much longer with much more welding. but i am only 140 pounds, so i don't think i can bust the frame that easily!! although i haf friends that has cracked it 2 or 3 times, i stil luv my bike!!!

Strengths:marzochi qr20 fork, bombproof frame, raceface components, hayes disc brakes.
Weaknesses:rear hub sounds like junk but it seems to work fine.
Similar Products Used:intense ussi sl.
Bike Setup:stock except for sram gripshift, and intense 2.35 front tire.
Bottom Line:this bike rocks. it's a bit of a pig but who cares. once you ride it the fun far out weighs the pounds. i've had it two weeks and i love it more every time i ride it. the qr20 fork can ride through a wall i swear. and it is super stiff. it holds a line through the roughest of trails. at high speeds it is extremly stable. on fast smooth single track where i was constantly checking my speed i don't have to on this bike. the long top tube and short chainstays make it a fast and confident descender. i'm sure the forks help out to. it also climbs better then i thought it would. because of the tall front end you have to really weight the front on steep climbs. even when i stand on the pedals and really lean on the front the rear wheel still has traction where my cross country bike i have to stay seated. maybe because of the short chainstays. but by no means is this bike made for climbing. but if you have to climb to get to the killer downhills then this bike won't let you down.
the bike is listed as a free ride but i think trail bike best fits the reaper better. it's a do it all bike that can take anything. i'd reccomend it to anybody.

Bike Setup:see my 1st review at bottom
Bottom Line:Hey its me again the kid who wrote the first review, ive had sufficent time on this bike to feel comftorable revewing it. Its been all over loading docks, bmx tracks, woods, streams, rocks, drop offs, and let me tell u I absolutely love my reaper (and for 2,100 i should), it rides like a dream. The only problem I have incountered was the cranks creaking but alittle tighting is all that is needed. The bike shop said that the cranks need to " work" themselves on to the bb and so they should stop creaking, and they have. Yesterday I was out on the trails some more, I made it up this climb on the first try that I usually never make cleanly. Honestly I dont notice the weight but i am 6'4, 210 lbs. Some might find it heavy, but ive never had a light xc rig so i cant say that I miss it. Besides Weight is not a concern to me, durability and performance is. I want a bike that can handle big drops 4 ft + , jumps, trials riding, ds racing, xc riding (which i mostely do, but i look for super tech stuff and drop offs), and maybe enter some hard tail dh events. This bike completely fits that bill. It rides way better than my pro flex 757, it feels like a full suspension bike with hard tail acceleration and climbing, I would call the handling "carvy" partly because of the michelin tires. It is the most confidence inspiring bike I have ever riddin, i hope this helps u out, email me with any other questions... take it easy.. -ian E41183@AOL.COM

Favorite Trail:still looking
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:I really like the frame. Good weight for how strong it is (4.5/28-29 lbs). Geometry is very cool. I haven't ridden much in the last few years and I felt very comfortable right away. QR 20 is great. Bike climbs better than I expected - I'm able to stay in the saddle.
Weaknesses:It is not a light bike. It is expensive. Rear disk brake (hayes) has almost no clearance with the chain stay. Front shock has an adapter for the disc brakes. After some hard riding, it came out of adjustment. The metal adapter piece was rubbing on the disc. With out proper tools I had to ride it that way - tolerances are way to tight for swift-kick adjustments. I hope that it just wasn't tightened down enough. Pads don't rub at all. Stock, the QR 20 is too soft for me. (190 lbs.) No way to get the chain not to rub on the front derailer when on the big ring and pedaling hard. Frame is very stiff, everything goes right to the cranks. No shifting problems though.
Similar Products Used:My last ride was a 20". I have borrowed friend's mountain bikes and always thought they felt large and clumsy. The Reaper felt great right off.
Bike Setup:RaceFace, Hayes, Rhyno Lite, XT, LX F. Derailer, Switched to cool Shimano Platform pedals - adjustable little allen bolt gripper things.
Bottom Line:Very expensive but a very good bike. I have no immediate plans for upgrades other than stiffening up the QR 20, it is set up real sweet. A buddy just bought a $2500 sofa, so I thought what the hell. Shock is great, brakes make a lot of racket but they stop like crazy and are very easy to adjust. Some of the extra tight tolerances bug me but time will tell, very good balance - confidence inspiring handling, light enough to climb o.k. and hop over smaller obstacles easily. Decent accelaration. Shock travel makes it a little hard to get off the ground initially but feels great after some practice. Guys at the shop loved it, one that races D.S. said he could win nationals with it - makes me feel like a poser, but hey I saved my pennies so screw 'em. No regrets.
