Date Reviewed: April 6, 2002
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Strengths:strength, good reliable componentry.
Weaknesses:the wheels are a bit soft.
Similar Products Used:balance cr 450, wheeler 3900, kona scab
Bike Setup:99 frame, marzocchi JR.t's, mavic D521 rims, Sram 9.0 rear/ LX front, LX cranks, hubs, avid 2.0 brakes, race face handlebars.
Bottom Line:This is the strongest XC bike i have ever seen, I bought it a year ago intending to use it for XC but I started getting into dh and since i was only 15 couldn't afford a new bike, so i set this up for Dh with Jr t forks and D521 rims. I have given this bike hard abuse, flat landing 6 foot drops, casing doubles and generally going too fast and crashing. The frame is in perfect condition, and none of the components have broke, (part from the Sunn Cr 18 wheels which could do anything BUT stay straight) over all this bike is a ledgendary XC bike and will last forever if used properly, no doubt about it.

Date Reviewed: September 3, 2001
Favorite Trail:Short Hills Provincial Park
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $1000.00
Purchased At:Rapid City Cycle
Strengths:Great frame, great mix overall and just a lot of fun to ride. This bike gives you tremendous confidence to ride anywhere.
Weaknesses:I think the bike should come with XT throughout and scrap the LX. LX doesn't really belong on this bike. Like putting Canadian Tire tires on a high performance car!!
Similar Products Used:Nishiki, Specialized Stump JUmper, GT
Bike Setup:REynolds 525 Chomoly Frame, Black in colour, Rock Shox JUdy SL, Mavic Rims, Maxxis Hard Drive, XT derailer, LX shifters and brake levers
Bottom Line:I did alot of research and test rode a lot of bikes prior to this purchase. Tried Kona's. Specialized, Giant, Trek and Divinci's in the same basic category and at the same basic price. I was intrigued by the chromoly frame as I wanted something more absorbing while not losing any strength. The Rocky Hammer was the only chromoly bike I could find. The price was 25% lower and the bike was 25% better than anything else in terms of overall quality and durablility. RM quality speaks for itself. Although all the bikes were good the hammer was excellent. I am very happy with the ride and the toughness of this bike. I have abused it quite well and it rides better now than the day I rode it home. I would also highly recommend Rapid City Cycle in St. Catharines. Owner, Chris tells you like it is about any bike and doesn't presssure sell. He is in it for the joy of the MB not because of the bread. Compare the hammer with any comparable bike and your choice will be easy.

Date Reviewed: May 31, 2001
Favorite Trail:Saturday Night Lake (Jasper)
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $900.00
Purchased At:River Valley Cycle - Edmonton
Strengths:Great all around value. Good forks. Very responsive steel frame. Very durable (has taken incredible beating).
Weaknesses:Mavic rims aren't that hard to pancake. A bit heavy. Don't like the Deore LX Rapid Fire Shifters or Deraileur. Definitely upgrade em. Dont like the LX cranks either (too much flex)
Similar Products Used:Rocky Blizzard (drool), Specialized FSR M4, Kona Cinder Cone
Bike Setup:Stock. Mavic rims. Judy T2 fork. LX Front Deraileur and Rapid Fire shifters. XT rear deraileur. LX cranks. Ritchey headset, seatpost.
Upgrades - Race Race Turbine Cranks and BB.
Bottom Line:This bike is definitely one of the best values out there. For not that much money, you get a great all-around cross country bike. The groupo is very decent quality and has been just fine for me (except for the LX shifters which I hate). The frame has lots of response and snaps back nicely when you pressure it. I have put this bike through some absolutely horrific abuse and it still keeps going and going. I have sent the bike careening down some very large hills (without me) and it still lives. The only real problems I have had are with the mavic rims (but rims can easily be replaced on ebay for dirt cheap). This bike is a pleasure to ride, whether on winding single track, down some crazy shoot, or over and around some technical rooty sections.

Its been one of the best investments I have ever made. Rocky has a buyer for life. Nobody beats em for quality. I would highly recommend this bike for any intermediate rider. I will be upgrading to a Rocky Blizzard or Rocky Element Race but I will definitely keep the old girl for commuting.

Strengths:Excellent overall bike! Good looking, awesome forks, excellent reliability!
Weaknesses:Stock stem is a little long and low, bike needs riser bars too. Also stock seat is pretty uncomfortable, and the price of the bike is a little too high.
Bottom Line:Pretty awesome bike! I'd definitely recommend it, you won't have any problems with this baby! (If you can tolerate the stem and seat!) Check it out! Any Rocky Mountain bike is a good one!

Bottom Line:I LIKE THIS BIKE ALOT SO FAR. BOUGHT IT IN SEPT. BEEN ON IT A MONTH +. 18" FRAME SOMEWHAT TIGHT..REPLACED BARS & HEADSET W/ RISER BARS & 15 DEG. SALSA MOTA ACE RISER BAR. IT HAS SOLVED MY EARLY TROUBLES. I'M BACK ON MY SEAT (WHICH ISNT A PROBLEM) AND MY WEIGHT IS BALNACED (50$) IS ALL IT TOOK. THE Z4 FORK IS NO LONGER PLUSH AS HELL ITS MORE RIGID AND MUCH MORE CONTOLLABLE. THE SPOKES/WHEELS ASSEMBLY?...HAVE NOT BUDGED. MAYBE THE BIKE IS A BIT HEAVY BUT FOR ME? AT 6'-1" 180 PNDS...IT WANTS MORE...I LIKE IT AND I RIDE AT AN AGGRESSIVE PACE ESPECIALLY ON DESCENTS...IT IS A HARDTAIL BUT IT HUGS THE GROUND AT QUICK SPEEDS THOUGH A KIDNEY BELT MAY NOT BE OUT OF THE QUESTION..(LOL)..SEE YA.

Strengths:Everything but the Michellin tires.
Weaknesses:hmmm...the Michellin tires? ;-)...they were too useless in anything other then loose dirt or mud. these tires have bad traction in hardpack or gravel.
Similar Products Used:1991 Cannondale SM900 with full DX and no suspension :o
Bike Setup:Stock except the following; took off the 44T and threw on a God Ring. After almost 2 months replaced the Michellin Wildgrippers with an IRC Mythos XC up front and a Conti Cross-Country on the rear.
Bottom Line:This is an update review (I posted the 99 Hammer in the 2000 section before...my bad. The bike on a whole is extremely well built, frame and component setup are well balanced. Although right from the shop I got them to put on XT derails and shifters. I replaced the tires after a short while...the new setup gives the bike a whole new ride. I'd recommend you switch from the Michellin Wildgrippers to a similar setup as I mentioned above for any new bike.

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Strengths:This machine is the best I have had....and that rates highly upon the bike public... it is warranteed for LIFE!!!! I have a bike with a SOUL not a bike with a multinational-corporation as parents like my friend who bought a Trek....
Weaknesses:The tires were swapped before the day was over... The brakes were weak but that was before v-brakes....
Similar Products Used:I have owned lots of BMX bikes, a Kona Cinder Cone (loved as well), and plenty of bikes tried before the Hammer.
Bike Setup:I now enjoy Avid V-brakes/levers, IRC tires, a new front rinm, thats it.
Bottom Line:This a mean machine that begs to be slogged--it has lasted me a good 5 years with only the normal replacements and upgrades. I will never sell this machine, just keep upgrading. In fact, it rides like my BMX bike so you know it's fast. My bike has soul.. does yours?

Strengths:Good component mix. Haven't worn out anything yet. Tough steel frame. Sweet fork. SRAM 9.0 are working great. Michelin Wildgrippers are good all around tires. This bike inspires confidence to do things and go places that get hairy. Got it for under a grand on a chain store discount.
Weaknesses:I feel like a **** Canadian! Just kiddin' eh. I got the silver one though, the paint job on the one on the web site is a little cooler looking.
Similar Products Used:Sat on some Treks and Specializeds but didn't find anything with the set-up for the price. Give me Bombers on all my bikes now.
Bike Setup:stock for now, will probably upgrade the bar and stem when they start buggin' me much more.
Bottom Line:Get this bike. Very tough, very smooth. Great all-around bike. Light enough for climbing, tough enough to drop or descend off most stuff.

Bottom Line:This is my first racing bike and my first bike with a front suspension. I was a die hard rigid rider with my RM Cardiac but found after a year of reasonbly hard riding it had a few creaks in it from drop offs and bunny hopping. When I started to ride this bike at first I didn't like it but now I love it except for the fact it has rapid fire (LONG LIVE GRIP SHIFT). The bike is very solid with no creaks or anything. The ride is fairly plush and the bike is responsive with no real suprises. For the money there is nothing better and I think this is a real good beginners racing bike. I've crashed it several times and it's always come back for more.I don't know about the other's who are slamming it, can you tell me what is better in that price range.

Duration Product Used:

Strengths:
Strongly built frame, great for technical riding
Weaknesses:
Feels heavier than it is, slow, cramped cockpit
Similar Products Used:
Trek 6500, 7000, 8000, 8500, Gary Fisher Big Sur, Rocky Mountain Oxygen Race
Bike Setup:
99 Rocky Mountain Hammer Race, 99 Marzocchi Z.4 Alloy
Bottom Line:The frame is bombproof cro-moly, with a unique geometry. There is a radically sloping top tube that provides great standover height, which is great for technical riding, but the cockpit was too cramped and offered a more upright position. Not ideally a XC machine, this bike was intended as a technical rider's platform. However, the somewhat plush Z.4 felt heavy, and even heavier than it was. In fact, the 99 Judy XC hydracoil fork felt more plush and agile than the Z.4. Generally the entire setup felt heavy and sluggish.Overall the bike is fairly well constructed, intended to be indestructable and technical riding intended. But even for that purpose it felt slow and sluggish. The almost identically spec'd Rocky Mountain Oxygen Race features the same bike basically with an aluminum frame rather than cro-mo, feels snappier and lighter. I think that if you're seriously considering the Hammer Race, to look at its aluminum sibling the Oxygen Race.

Strengths:

Judy T2 is not my first choice,
New Z4 Zocchi's should fix that for '99
Similar Products Used:

Bike Setup:
'98 Hammer: RFP LX/XT, Judy T2
Bottom Line:Alot of people complain about the rims, but from the way people write, it suggests they're not the most experienced riders. While the '98 and past rims have not been the greatest, with more riding skill and everything else being equal, the rims can easily hold up. I've taken mine through some good down hill and cross country in Canmore and Bragg Creek with only miner dents. Otherwise, great bike! Good value, a little heavy but strong. Brodie is giving them some healthy competion for '99 in this dollar range. Only 4 stars because nobody's perfect...

I haven't tried the 1999 version yet, but the 1998 model is awesome! The bike is light but yet strong to handle tough terrain. Last summer I took the bike on a 4 hour excursion in the back country trails of Whistler - it was tough, but the bike handled everything flawlessly. I may update my bike this year by changing the front forks to Marzocchi Z4 (like the one they have on the 1999 model)

Bottom Line:

I have no idea what Rich is talking about, I've had my hammer for three years, now and it has no original parts; the frame out-lived them all. The wheels on mine where so well built that they lasted almost a year (no small feat for my style of riding and the local terrain.) Hammer frames are one of the worlds strongest, period. A trials ridin buddy of mine has the new reynolds framed ('98) hammer, and he's raving about the strength already (he's only had it for a month and a half.) I have freinds at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, and have ridden around that town, the trails there are totally tame, and Rich still insists he warped the frame and wheels. Listen guys, I won my fist BC cup and UCI race on a Hammer. They rock. Rich must have such little riding skill that he's damaging the frame and wheels by sloppy handling, and droping the bike. On the down side, the frames are pretty heavy; but they more than make up for it in strength. Excellent handling, stiff yet compliant, and excellent geometry for climbing and descending, VERY stable, yet still able to dice it up on the singletrack. Hammer's are awesome bargains, and a poor racer's or rider's dream. I'm moving on now from my hammer, I've got a few more bucks now and am going for a sub-three pound frame and sid, but I'll never forget that I got started on a hammer race. That bike is reponsible for my riding and racing today, I owe it; so will you. Only four stars because it is fairly heavy, but its one of very few four star bikes I can think of in its price range.

I will not buy from Rocky Mountain again.
