Favorite Trail:Flattop Ak
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $2700.00
Purchased At:Rocky mountain
Strengths:Very strong stiff bike, all the components work very well together, the 2002 marzocci front and fox air rear kick ass, we all know Rockymountain makes a bad ass bike!
Weaknesses:The only weaknesses I've found yet was that the mosscitoo air lights that came with the bike are really weak and in turn on my first ride I had two flats and had to walk down from the top of a kick ass down hill.. I replaced them with some wtb's 2.1.
Similar Products Used:none
Bike Setup:Its the new 2002 slayer so I have the 2002 morzocci freeride with 5 inches in the front and the fox rl in the back, very smooth ride, it also came with the Hayes hydralic disc brakes rather then the magura clara like on last years. Component wise, it came with xt rear, and lx front, race face cranks and riser.. I'm just really pleased with this bike so far, and its 5 pounds lighter then last years!
Bottom Line:Ok, now like I said earlier. "we all know rockymountain kicks ass", yes we do all know that and this bike is one to show for the kick ass ness, very smooth ride, components work very well and its just set up perfect, other then the tires, they just suck ass. But I would recommend this bike to anyone that is into hardcore trail riding, with some down hill in between.

Date Reviewed: August 7, 2001
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $1800.00
Strengths:heavy duty fron triangle, Z1 fork, suspension just right for around here at ~4 rear, 5 front
Weaknesses:typical low-drawer Rocky Mtn suspension bushings, I dislike SRAM altogether
Similar Products Used:Rocky Mtn DHRace, Klein attitude (and others)
Bike Setup:bought in Nov 2000, early-release model with the adjustable Claras and Z1 fork (since changed to non-adj claras and Z3 fork) - RF Prodigy cranks, etc .. but changed for the 28" DH bars, Intense 2.7 front tire and Synchros seat post. Shop was good enough to up the springs for free to maximum stiffness, Ring God
Bottom Line:Suits the Victoria area and most of the planet for all-round riding. On the first Shore ride with this bike (North Vancouver), however, I busted the Prodigy cranks and destroyed the silly plastic SRAM derailleur. If I were to get back into the harder-core Shore riding, the brakes would have to go, the rims changed to 321s, the der's changed to Shimano and the cranks changed. But since I ride in Vickkky, this bike is just fine, and I don't have to use my hardtail when I go to Utah or Colorado, either.

Rocky Mountain: please beef up the suspension and go to bearings, please.

Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $3000.00
Purchased At:Mister Bike
Strengths:VERY fun bike to ride, suspension soaks up almost everything, uphill riding is pretty good too
Weaknesses:In a recent crash I bent the complete rear frame way out of shape and had to replace the whole rear frame assembly (1260DM!!!!) I have had much worse crashes with much cheaper bikes and never had a problem, this combined with the fact that I had to wait 1 month for replacement parts has certainly left a bitter taste in my mouth.
The cable routing around the seat post is terrible, if you don't zip tie everthing in place you can snag the cabling on the seat post clamp- something like that should have been solved before coming onto the market.
Similar Products Used:FSR enduro expert GT I-drive, Cannondale super-V&Jekyl
Bike Setup:Shimano XT Discs, Psylo SL Fork, Fat Albert Tyres, Syntace Stem and Bars
Bottom Line:I love and hate this bike, no doubt the most fun bike I have ever ridden and when it's working it's great. I still can't belive the frame bent so easily, I have spent more time in the shop with this bike in the last 2 months than the last 2 years with my old cheap Cannondale, go figure....

Weaknesses:Smallish seat. I would like to see a Titec dh type on it

Bottom Line:This bike is a perfect New Englander. If you like to do some drops, some jumps and a nice paced XC ride every now and then then this bike is for you. If on the other hand you like a light XC bike and plan to race then this may not be your best bet. The fun factor on this bike is off the charts. I love it! 5 flamin chilis

Weaknesses:What brakes
Similar Products Used:Norco bomber, Cove gspot, Santa Cruz superlight
Bike Setup:Z1 QR20+, Hayes Hydraulics, Ring god rockring, the rest is stock because it is all good stuff.
Bottom Line:This bike is awesome now that I have Hayes brakes. I had a lot of troubles with my Magura Claras(read review). This bike is a good balance between a fun freeride bike and a capable xc bike that can climb. I think this bike will take just about anything (within reason). Great balance between the Z1 and the fox rear shock. This is one tight fun bike.

Favorite Trail:401
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $1250.00
Purchased At:Sports Garage
Strengths:Frame is bullet proof, luminescent metallic flake paint job is worth many cool points, and this bike goes downhill real FAST!
Weaknesses:I destroyed a back wheel and broke the shock/linkage bolt, but that was my fualt. For the people who have problems with the rear derailler cable routing, do this: rotate the seat QR and zip tie the rear and front derailler cable housing together about an inch behind the rear cable stop on the top tube.
Similar Products Used:specialized enduro, rocky mtn element TO (my last bike which also rocked!), and an outland vpp5.
Bike Setup:Z.1CR bomber (130mm), shimano xt f/r disc brakes (6in rotors), shimano xt drivetrain, and other raceface goodies. Just built up a sun rhyno lite last nite for rear and built a mavic f519 for front, and run conti vertical pro's 2.3 for front and rear tires.
Bottom Line:This bike ROCKS! Just scoot back, let go of the brakes, and hold on. The suspension eats up everything except the craziest of drops. 5 and 6 foot drops-no problem! It's a little heavy to pedal up hill, but definately bearable-just pedal harder. This bike is also a blast on singletrack, it eats it up and asks for more.

Duration Product Used:3 months
Purchased At:Sporting Life bikes
Strengths:I have a rocky mountain edge (same frame)
I paid $1630 Canadian (pro-deal) sweet price!!!!
Great frame
Good fork (its a Z-5)
good wheels
great price
It weighs 32 pounds, ahs 4.75 inches of travel and it can still climb
Weaknesses:The stock rocky mountain bar is very narrow for a freeride bike
SRAM half-pipe shifters are terrible!! You cannot bunny-hop without shifting.
The stock maxxis mobster tires are made for cross-country riding. If you want to do any serious freeriding you will want to change these tires soon. I pinch flatted four times in two weeks and I don't go very big.
Similar Products Used:RM6, K2 Beast
Bike Setup:I have swapped the stock maxxis mobsters for a Hutchinson jumbo 2.5 in the front and an intense 2.4 in the rear.
I have also swapped the stock bar for an amoeba DH bar.
Bottom Line:The EDGE is a great bike if you are just getting into freeriding. It has a great frame, good fork(it's a 5-inch bomber Z-5), and overall decent parts. But, if you plan on doing some serious freeriding or urban assault you will have to change some parts. Change the bar tires and shifters as soon as possible after you get this bike. This bike is still great. Even if you aren't into freeriding you might want to look at this bike if you are an XXL trailrider. It can still climb and you'll blow away you're XC friends on the descents. If rocky ditched twist-shifters for good this bike would be amazing.

Favorite Trail:Virgin Rim Trail around Navajo Lake
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $1400.00
Purchased At:AardvarkCycles.com
Strengths:Strong frame, looks tough, climbs great, descends like butta', built in Canada and it's a Rocky Mountain
Weaknesses:Comes stock with SRAM, platform pedals, sub-par stock fork, stock Maguras blow, stock Rocky Mtn riser bars make better boomerangs
Similar Products Used:Santa Cruz Bullit, Santa Cruz Heckler, Specialized Big Hit, Rocky Mountain RM6 & Pipeline
Bike Setup:Custom setup: Edge frameset (same as Slayer), Z1 QR20 Forks, LX, Azonic World Force 2" risers, WTB MotoRaptor front & Panaracer Fire DH rear, Grimecca System 8's
Bottom Line:I was a year ahead of my time last season... I bought the Element Race, put Hayes discs on it and a long-travel fork. When the Slayer came out... I had to have it and promptly sold my Element. I LOVE the extra inch of travel front and rear. It is the perfect trail bike.

The Z1 QR20 up front is super supple and stiff thanks to the 20mm axle. And the rear suspension soaks everything up I'm dishing out to it.

Do yourself a favor and toss the stock risers first thing. Everything else is quality, but you'll have to pay to get the Z1 QR20 like me. I much prefer the Grimecca's to the Magura's.

Overall this is the best all-around freeride machine. I can pound out the climbs just fine, but descend like a downhiller. I love this bike!

Strengths:The frame on this bike kicks, the fox shock is great.
Weaknesses:none other than the cable routing. My shifter cable caught the stem and kept pulling it out of the mount thing. So I just put a cable tie on it and attached it to the brake line.
Similar Products Used:rocky mountain spice
Bike Setup:its a rocky mountain edge(same frame and shock but a step down from the slayer.) go to bikes.com for the specs
Bottom Line:This bike is great. I took it off a 8 footer (it had a down ramp), lots of 6 footers and 7 footers that didnt even have down ramps and it didnt even flinch. It rides the boards great and the steeps even better. I like the disc brakes because they make it real easy to do a nose wheely. If you want to buy a freeride bike and you dont a have $3000(can) for the slayer buy the edge its like only $2250(can). Oh ya the bike has 4.75 inches of travel not 4.5. This bike kicks.

Strengths:great design as it seems to do everything well. climbs great for me, very little difference between this and my element race. dont worry about the climbing ability of this bike! great suspension, I also like the sram 9.0 when it is dialed in right. on the downhill this bike is awesome! lots of travel and tons of fun.
Weaknesses:the rear brake cable mount by the seatpost does not work all that good. I will have to use a zip tie. the magura brakes are not all what I had hoped for. The front one squeaks really bad and I've already had to blead it once. the back brake seems to be working well though.
Similar Products Used:element race, specialized fsr
Bike Setup:stock but should have upgraded to the hayes.
Bottom Line:Awesome bike that seems to do it all for me. My first rides on it were in Moab last week and it was the perfect bike to have there. Special thanks to Poison Spider for stocking a rear derailer dropout and for bleeding my front brakes. They were really helpful and offered lots of good advice. Looking forward to a season of Kanaskis country riding on the bike as it climbs great for me and the downhill is twice as fun as my element race. Rocky - why did you not just put hayes on this thing?? My life would be so much easier now if you did. Should have upgraded it while it was in the shop being built. All together I cant imagine a better all around bike to have - but only 4 chillis cause of the brakes.

Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $3200.00
Purchased At:La Cordée
Strengths:Beefy frame, good suspension design, come with a marzocchi
Weaknesses:The cable of rear brake around the seat post. I have to put some zip tie because the cable is too long. If it's not enough i will shorter the cable. I don't know how rocky made to miss this??????it's so obvious. The cable is get out of is route each time the rear suspension is working.
Similar Products Used:GT I-drive, Norco launch
Bike Setup:Stock except fork:marzocchi z-1 drop off qr-20 plus and sram Stock except marzocchi z1 drop off and sram shorty shifter
Bottom Line:I really love this bike. It's handling is simply amazing I am a better rider with it. This bike fear nothing and take almost any trail easily. The frame was very beef, with a beautiful look and have good parts on it. If you want a capable bike to make some downill fun (not race) but don't want a downhill bike get this. Also you could pedal it uphill but it was a real pain. The weight is not an issue then I don't understand people who complain about the weight...It's a bombproof bike so if you want to race buy another one. This is a freeride bike and the parts was choosing in this way. It also have an indestructible set of wheel etc...

The parts: The z-1 drop off is working perferctly, I also appreciate the flat pedal it fit very well for the intended suit: a freeride machine. I was not sure about sram shorty shifter but it's not like the halfpipe. But they are really good and the sram derailleur is more beefy compare to shimano.

I had a problem with the rear brake. The disc is always drag on the caliper. It happen when you compress the rear suspension. Talk to rocky and tell us it was a magura problem. Why? Because magura sent and old version batch of clara with smaller space between the caliper and the disc. Rocky accept it at only one condition if they have a problem with the brake magura will change it free. Talk to magura they saids it was right and send another rear brake free. It happen only on the earlier version of slayer, the one with z1 drop off instead of z3 long travel. No more problem with the brake.

This bike is good for anything except for race. It will be perfect(five stars)except for the cable routine I have to give it four stars. How rocky did it...I was confused. At this price and knowing the reputation of excellence of the company it was an unforgiven mistake.

Strengths:Amazing suspension. Bottomless, yet firm without mush-mush.
Amazing handling. Just tip n' go
Amazing climbing. Just sit n' grind
Amazing downhilling. It locally bends gravity.
Weaknesses:Well, it ultra-utilitarian, bombproof construction may not

burliness and bulk, as it just about the most solid-feeling
beast I have ridden. Imagine an XC-like body position with
down hill like suspension without the bog-bog associated with most design... that is the slayer.

Once your legs get used to 33 pounds plus, there is no going back. If you ride to grin, and not necessarily win, then the slayer it is.

Purchased At:tested at the ridge. they have two in right now. each cost 3000$
Strengths:Rear shock, frame
Weaknesses:ive only tested it and the only thing wrong is it should have like mr. T's on it and im guessing that the cable routing problem isnt to bad, just re route them.

Bike Setup:Rockey mountain spice w/ bash gaurd, pig DH headset and gonna get z1 drop offs.
Bottom Line:I was in the shop geting my head set replaced on my spice. It cracked in half the first little 4 foot drop i took with in the first few hours of riding. It was there that the slayer ive seen so many times before on the shelf was off the shelf. I decided while i was waiting id just ride around the shop once. This thing made my bike look like crap! Mine and the slayer almost have the same frame, only difference is the slayers tubing goes from round to square and is made out of stronger tubes. It makes me wish i had waited and saved up annother grand and got that other than my spice. I dont know why but the back shock on it feels so much different on it than mine in a very goood way. It just felt springier. People complain about weight but when i lifted it up it didnt feel much heavier than my preety well stock spice and it climes well....almost to well. the brakes on it are so sensitive. With in an inch of brake lever movement you can seize up your tire. Annother thing about weight, with a seven pound frame thats not that heavy, every pound weighs only as much as a stick of butter. My whole blt lighting system must weigh a few pounds but i dont notice any difference going up hill on my bike. I recomend this product to any one like me who was told by the dealer not to go over so many foot drops but is doing twice that. I liked it so much im saving up for one. lets see, out of the three thousand i need i got two dollars and fifty cents. Yeah its a little pricey if all you got is a paper route that pays almost squat and what you get is instantly gone cause you got a replace the damn brake pads on your bike every month! But still its well worth the money.

Bike Setup:bought as frame only for about 1500 CDN, manitou x-vert super, avid mech. disk brake on front, race face and syncros goodies though-out. Sun cr17 rims with SRAM front disk hub
Bottom Line:I was devastated by the breakage of my R.M. Speed, but i must admit the slayer is a much better frame. The first thing i noticed while playing around in the snow and jumping off of snow piles is the stiffness of the frame and fork compared to my old speed and Judy 100 set-up. However I am very glad i took the spring off the shock to test my original cable set-up before riding. Otherwise the shift cable would have been ripped out and the rear brake would have locked on to the wheel probably causing a crash.
The frame has a beautiful sparkley holographic powder coat and has a VERY beefy construction (top and down tubes are essentially squared-off Easton baseball bats). I have mine built up fairly light (about 28-29lbs) with XC wheels and disk in the front only. This bike inspires you to try new and crazy things so i hope the wheels hold up. I would definately recommend this machine to anyone looking for a "fun" bike to do every thing on with out worry of breakage. I am even going to race XC on it. Those concerned about weight should consider the R.M. instinct frame, the slayer frame weighs in the area of 7 pounds.

Strengths:Frame, its amazingly burly. It can handle anything I throw at it. Crankarms, Race Face are great! The whole stock setup is great.
Weaknesses:The rear travel is a little small, but its all good. Th Magura Discs take a while to break in, but after that they are perfect.

Favorite Trail:all
Duration Product Used:Tested or demo'ed only
Purchased At:Not Applicable
Strengths:Looks, value and its a Rocky Mountain
Weaknesses:Product spec - the rear spring is too soft and those Maguras are a pain to set up and don't work properly.
Similar Products Used:RM6, Vertex, Kona Stinky, Schwinn 4-Banger, etc
Bike Setup:stock
Bottom Line:I built this up at work and it didn't go together as well as the other Rockies I've built. The Magura rotor was warped and no matter what I did, it dragged. The rear spring is too soft. It'd be good on a smaller size frame, but Rocky should have done a little homework and figured that the average 18.5in frame rider is gonna weigh at least 150-160lbs. The stock spring simply can't handle that kind of weight properly(you've got to max out the preload, which isn't good). Overall, its a good bike and I would still recommend it to anyone.

My Fox Vanilla R got damaged (leaking oil) but i got that replaced for free so its not a real Problem

Strengths:FEEL. The feeling of rigidity/solidity is amazing. Stable as a freight train. Bomb-proof frame and wheelset. Fox shock and Marzocchi Z1 Qr20 work amazingly with the whole set-up. Magura Clara brakes are the best I've ever ridden. It's not that much heavier than a x-c bike, and with the supple suspension and 27 speeds, you don't even really notice the extra weight. Absolutely gorgeous black pearl powder-coating. Explodes with color in sunlight!
Weaknesses:Poor cable routing for rear derailleur past seat post collar. Full compression of suspension can snag cable on collar and yank it right out of the derailleur. After a couple of trail-side fixes, I turned the collar 30 degrees to the left and had the bike shop shorten the cable/housing slightly. Never a problem since. (but it should have been better thought out before it left the factory)

Bike Setup:Marzocchi Z1 Qr20 "Drop Off", Fox Vanilla R, SRAM ESP 9.0 shifters/rear derailleur, XT front, Magura Clara hydraulic discs, Sun Rhyno-Lite rims, THE fender, FSA "the Pig" headset, Maxxis 2.35 "Swamp Thing" tires, RaceFace Prodigy crankset and CNC machined seat post, Rocky Mtn. bar/stem/ hub-set.
Bottom Line:I can't believe how incredible this thing feels. I had always ridden x-country style bikes, and had no idea how much more confidence inspiring a slacker angle/long travel bike could be. My "Edge" was kind of a twitchy, x-c racer style of bike, and I thought it was an great bike. But with the Slayer, I can go twice as fast with twice as much confidence on the same trails. The Edge was about 26 1/2 lbs. and the Slayer is just under 33 lbs. Slightly tougher to pedal uphill, but infinitely more stable when the trail points downward. For the kind of riding I want to do, this bike had made me a BETTER RIDER.
