Strengths:Great rebound adjustability, very tunable shock.
Weaknesses:Weak shock construction. Unreliable (i.e. breaks easily)

Bottom Line:THis shock would be great for a light unabused rig. Im 155lbs and I broke this shock in 4 months under hard technical riding. Very few drops, none above 4'. Its being warranteed. Fox and Cane Creek have proven to be more reliable.

    Price Paid: $400.00
    Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:The best rear shock i ever used! Works really really well!
    Weaknesses:really nothing to say here...
Similar Products Used:thousands of coil shocks and a fox shock
Bike Setup:Giant XTC Big Bear, RS Duke SL, All SRAM X.0 components, SID race rearair shock, RaceFace Prodigy stems/cranks and all, Michelin Wildgripper Comp s tires...
Bottom Line:I have the SID race airshock and there's just nothing better on the whole market! I've ridden a LOT of coil shocks and some other air shocks and nothing even comes close to the RS SIDrace, except for the FOX maybe... but even that isn't as good. But it's my experience it also depends on your bike how well your shock works... i tried the same shock on a Giant DS 1 and the performance is lesser than on my Big Bear....

BUT (there's ALWAYS a but) stay within the limits of wich the shock was intended for...in this case XC/CC. NO steep downhills and all because then you've just wasted about 400 dollars, then buy a 12" coil shock at the same price....

    This shock Rocks!(hox)

(If the SIDrace is too expensive then take the SIDxc, it's also very good... but watch out! Make sure you take a 2001 or newer model or else you will get the same problems as the guys beneath me :P k? BUY IT! )

    Date Reviewed: July 3, 2002
    Duration Product Used:2 Years
Strengths:Once you get the air pressure where you want it the ride is good, absorbing medium to large bumps well without bobbing too much under hard pedaling and climbing. Rebound adjustment is a nice feature.
Weaknesses:Very difficult to get the right amount of air pressure because too much air escapes when removing the shock pump or when using a separate pressure gauge, especially on the negative (rebound) chamber which is supposed to be set to only 50 pounds. Perhaps the valves are crap or maybe it's because it's such a small container for the air as compared to a car tire which uses less air, but in a much larger container. Manufacturers need to fix these problems or people will stop buying their products.
Similar Products Used:only brief test rides of GT I-drive, Specialized, not enough riding to use as comparison.
Bike Setup:2000 Giant XTC DS1, stock.
Bottom Line:This is a follow up review to my original review of 6/19/00. Shock itself is good, but too much air escapes when removing the shock pump or when using a separate pressure gauge which makes it very difficult to get the air pressure set correctly. You have to put in more air pressure than the final setting will be because so much air escapes when detaching the pump from the valve. Then you have to test ride and release small amounts of air until you get the setting where you want it without it being too soft. A lot of the negative reviews of this product identify the same problem as I had and I believe the problem is being misdiagnosed as a defective shock when in my case it turned out to be a problem with attaching and detaching the shock pump and too much air is allowed to escape. Manufacturers and bike shops need to use this review area to keep up with the problems and potential solutions for the products they sell and service. Some of the reviews here show people with this problem are not getting proper support and service from the manufacturer or bike shop. This lack of effort on their part to keep abreast of problems with the products they sell and service could lead to their demise. Remember years ago when U.S. auto makers could care less about quality and then complained when imported cars started taking away some of their market share? The cycling industry needs to take heed.

    Strengths:Lightweight
    Weaknesses:Leaky Negative Chamber
Similar Products Used:NONE, this is my 1st rear shock.
Bike Setup:CUSTOM STP - 3 1/2# Carbon Frame and Rear Shock
Bottom Line:1-Two months after the warranty expired I noticed the negative chamber was not holding any air. Rockshox Tech Svcs called it abuse and would not replace it because the warranty period had expired and claimed the NC wet conditions caused the failure? It is dry in NC. They did cut me a deal on a replacement but how could the ~$300 shock fail before I needed to replace my front tire?
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR STP RIDERS: Rockshox recommends cleaning and lubricating with TRIFLO or teflon based lube after every ride (not 8 hours per the manual) and have it serviced by a professional annually (in the manual) or you may be replacing this annually.
2-Unrelated but interesting, the ring that hold the goods together came completely unscrewed during a ride and the pressure blew out @ approximately 6 months.

I'll try another SID XC because I do not have any other choice for the 1.25" travel rear shock. Pay very close attention to the cleanliness of the shaft and keep it lubed.

It doesnt work at the right time and it does work while riding against a bump....thats really nice while accelerating...but if you have a bouncy front shock..then you feel the gain a lot less...

Weaknesses:Negative side leaks air when disconnecting pump.
    Bike Setup:2001 GT i drive 2.0
Bottom Line:Shock losses 50-60 lbs (negative side) every time. I called Rock Shox and they said 10-15 lb loss is normal and suggested I over inflate the shock to get my target pressure. Huh???? This solution works but the shock doesn't perform as it's supposed to. I'll use it until it dies and buy a Cane Creek. I don't even want to deal with sending it out for warantee work and I saved enough on the bike that the cost of another shock won't kill me.

From reading all the reviews, including reviews of the lock out model, some of these shocks work....others don't and there doesn't seem to be an in between. You're rolling the dice if you buy one.

Bottom Line:This is just a follow up on my last review. I finally received my shock after 6 weeks. I think I found the problem... it seems that during the time my shock was away, Rockshox was in the process of finding a new Canadian distributor. The old distributor did do the warranty work and they used this year's seals. The shock seems to work fine, I've had it back for about 3 months and it has not leaked yet. Hopefully the new RS distributor can provide more prompt service. The performance rating is about 4 chilis and the value is three.(It came with the bike, I would buy a Fox if I had the choice.)

Strengths:Light, so when it blows up at leats it doesn't weight a lot.
Weaknesses:Shock blew its seals after only nine rides. I am stunned at what a piece of crap this shock is. For the top of the line, this is unacceptable. I was riding my local cross country practice trail and I noticed that the geometry on the bike felt a bit weird, like the seat angle kept slackening. Then I noticed I was whacking my pedals on roocks and roots and stuff, things I normally don't hit. Then I noticed the clunking sound. I got off the bike, looked at the shock and it was fully compressed and wouldn't come back. Rememebr, this is after only eight rides, no air, no jumps, no hucking, just single track!
    Similar Products Used:None this bad

Bottom Line:If you can get your shop to put a Cane Creek on your Sugar 1 do it. They are used on the S2.

I'm sorry, but the past several RS products I've had have been nothing but trouble, shoddy tolerances nd frustrating customer service. Marketing does not make the product, but someone at RS seems to have forgotten that. get a different shock or you'll be sorry sonner or later.

Strengths:Works well with the Giant NRS system
Weaknesses:WIthin 1 ride the seals were blown and oil was leaking profusely.
    Bike Setup:Stock 2000 Giant XTC DS 1
Bottom Line:This shock seemed to work well but... on the first ride (road ride) the seals blew. I rode it once or twice afterwards and then brought it in to my LBS so they could have a look. They called RS for one week without being able to get a hold of the one guy in all of Canada who could apparently answer their questions regarding rear suspension (one guy, how big is this company?). Eventually they connected and the guy said that the local boys couldn't replace the seals and that they would have to send it to RockShox to be warrantied. Almost one month later I am still waiting for my shock!! The guys at my LBS have been calling and the only response they get is "the shock is in processing". Whatever that means? Anyway, the bottom line is that the shock seemed to work as designed (or was that just a dream? Do I really own a new bike? It's been so long I can't remember) but the seals suck and so does the customer service at RockShox. I believe that the seals have been changed for this year so that may help solve the problem. This product gets the minimum (unless of course you are the type of person who enjoys buying something and then not being able to use it). I am going to figure out whether or not the Giant and the "no-sag" set-up is compatable with a Fox shock.

Strengths:Light, Easy setup, Nice progressive stroke, Good range of adjustment, & holding up great so far. I didn't have a lot of faith in this shock because of a bad experience with RS products. I got this thing last year for cheap and it works good and has held up well. Works pretty damn good too. Very adjustable and pretty good seals. Holds air awesome, never even have to worry about it actually.
Weaknesses:Scary clunk when it bottoms out. Freaks you out the first time it happens. Happens a lot. You need to really let this mother sag to get it to work right. Then unfortunately it bottoms out. Most people set it up with to much air. Low air and fast rebound works best. Sucky piece o'crap if you are over 180lbs. Looks like a little black bolwing pin. No manual or setup info. Your on your own here. Not a Fox Float R.

Bottom Line:Rock Shox & Giant need to do a better job of quality control. Both the original shock and one from another Giant frame my LBS installed as a replacement leaked air so quickly that the negative air chamber is useless. This is on a bike that sells for $1,850, might as well be a $100 bike from WalMart if the components are defective right from the start. Probably should have bought a Specialized FSR Enduro Expert with a Fox shock. This certainly takes the pleasure out of buying a new bike, especially one at this price.

Strengths:Lockout on handlebar is convenient. Lockout eliminates bob on the way up but still alows some travel. Once you get it dialed in, very plush ride. Lightweight.
Weaknesses:Durability is very questionable. I've blown 2 rear seals in 6 months! Rockshox's service sucks. Waited almost 2 months for a replacement. I suggest a fox coil/over if you ride hard or are over 170 lbs.

Bike Setup:Y superlite 300. Sid Front and rear shocks. XTR throughout.
Bottom Line:I ride about 3 times a week on fairly rough single track near SLC Utah. I ride hard, grinding up the hills and then tearing down them trying to better times, beat buddies or race some unsuspecting biker I see up the trail from me. I recently broke down and spent the big bucks on a full suspension bike, the Trek Superlite. I bought it for three major reasons: 1. It is light weight for a FS..25lbs. 2. I have a great Trek dealer in town whom I trust and 3. The rear shock locks out. I want a lockout so I don't have to worry about my uphill effort being wasted generating bounce.

My experince with the SID has been a love/hate relationship. This being my first FS bike I can't compare to anything but my old aluminum frame which practically loosened teeth. However, I know plush and this bike and shock delivers a very plush ride. The lockout delivers exactly what I want, restricted movement on the way up.

Unfortunatly, that is where my praise ends. Reguardless of how hard I ride, I expect top of the line products to hold up and perform. If they fail, I expect thier manufacturer to stand behind those products and solve the problem or offer some other solution. I have experinced two complete rear seal failures on the SID. Both times, I have taken the shock back to my trusted dealer and he has done all humanly possible, including canabolizing his floor demo, to get me back in the saddle. The second time the shock needed repair, it took over 2 months to get the shock back from RockShox's repair shop. Numerous calls by me and the dealer only resulted in excuses and unkept promises. I suggest you look elsewhere if you are in the market for a bombproof shock that will allow you to concentrate on your riding and forget about your components. I hear fox coil-over shocks are the best, I will be trying on soon.
