Favorite Trail:the one I'm on
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $150.00
Purchased At:ebay
Strengths:light, looks good
Weaknesses:not very sturdy but that's not a priority in my case
Similar Products Used:n/a
Bike Setup:titanium hardtail full XTR including wheels.Morati bars and seatpost Conti gatorskins
Bottom Line:I ride primarily "urban" and liked the look of a double crown to add more substance to the bike. Picked this up NOS in the box on ebay, AFAIK there is no lighter double crown out there. So it's been up to the task and was a good deal. Someday I might just use a couple of ti tubes and make a double crown rigid out of it.

Favorite Trail:Dartmoor
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $350.00
Purchased At:supercycles.co.uk
Strengths:weight (for triple clamp), travel (for weight), colour (i've got strange taste), rockshox aftercare.
Weaknesses:cartridge (allegedly), not strong enough for hardcore DH, stiction, long bedding in time. Was available for very little money for a while.
Similar Products Used:Quadra 21R, RST 281R, SID SL, '98 Bomber Z1
Bike Setup:Coyote DH1, Deore disk brake, XT/LX blend
Bottom Line:This fork is the triple-clamp version of the old '98 Judy SL. What this entails is one of the lightest triple clamp forks ever made, but not, by far, the strongest. If you're a hardcore DH/Slalom rides or are into big jumps or trials, forget it, it's not for you. If you're into singletrack/ casual XC/ freeriding, then this could be a very good fork for you - triple clamps make it steer very well, and the travel works well over all bumps, even through hard cornering. But i've heard from loads of people how fragile the cartidges are, though mine never blew.

Strengths:The nice box it came in.
Weaknesses:What was inside the box.
Similar Products Used:Judy DH, Quadra 10(don't ask), Marzzochi Super T Pro.
Bike Setup:Nice. See Stinky Deelux 99 review.
Bottom Line:I think that I effectivly paid nothing for this fork so I should not complain but it is not very good. Quite pogo like at times when control is needed and bendy when accuracy is high on the agenda. Very high when going very fast over very rugged terrain. For DH this fork falls sadly short and the finishing quality is very low. I now do not own these forks but if I was offered these again or some liqurice sticks tied together with spaghetti I know which I'd choose.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $99.00
Purchased At:secondhand
Strengths:Cheap plentiful supply of unused forks in the secondhand market. Good rigid twin crown design. Excellent basis for building the ultimate fork!
Weaknesses:nasty colour, harsh and noisy topout, spring too linear, uses all travel too easily. Damping cartridge ineffective.
Similar Products Used:Rockshox RS1, Manitou 3, Lawwill Leader3, RST Mozo pro 4.5, Manitou SXR.
Bottom Line:Buy a nice unused secondhand pair for about £60 to £70, junk all the internals and fit a Total Air Cartridge system. Fit double bushings and the latest wiper kit. You'll have a great pair of twin crown forks for less than £200. Oh, respray them as well and put new non-rockshox stickers on, they don't deserve the free advertising! 5 chillis AFTER the total conversion! (one chilli before)

Similar Products Used:ROCK SHOX JUDY/WHITE BROTHERS CARTRIDGE, SPRINGS
Bike Setup:98 GT STS 1500DS PANARACERS, XT,XTR,MAVIC
Bottom Line:After I finally figured out the right spring combo everything was cool, get the alloy caps for the top the fork tubes, the plastic ones are a little to fragile for my tastes. Like everyone that has dealt with rockshox in the past knows that it is only a mater of time before the cheap cartrigde inside blows, I know because mine did on the second ride on this bike. Last year while I was enjoying the rain at the Napa World Cup, I took it to the Rock Shox tent and ask if they could fix it, they tossed the cartridge, and installed a Hydra coil, for FREE. Since then this fork has been through hell without even a wimper. So all you fancy lads that like to whine like women instead of doing something about you're broken toys, see ya at the races.

Bottom Line:I like to freeride...this somewhat suits my needs. It doesn't suprise me that a 80mm Marzocchi beats the crap out of this Rockshox Judy XL. the Judy XL is great on small hits...but when its comes to the BIG stuff it doesn't come through for me. It has a "springy" feel which is not fun when your flying over rock gardens and nasty descents. If I wanted a POGO Stick..I would have saved a lot more money at the local dept. store! Bottom Line:I ride just about everything, DH, XC, Trials and Slalom, I like these forks, it seems thaty all the people who moan about this fork are jumpers and downhillers. THIS IS NOT A FORK FOR DOWNHILL OR JUMPING! it is supposed to be an enduro/freeride fork or for those who ride extreme cross country terrain and its great for that. I too have bust a cartridge but that was because I was jumping so I am not annoyed, I have now converted it to hydracoiol damping and use it on my freeridey bike.bottom line is buy a fork to suit YOUR riding style, don't moan whe nthings break because you werebeing stupid and using xc parts for DH and stuff.

Favorite Trail:By the river Tees
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $200.00
Purchased At:Abduls Corner Bike Shop
Strengths:Well made
Weaknesses:Too good
Similar Products Used:Boxxer, X-Vert
Bike Setup:Barracuda Subway
Bottom Line:Rock shox 01 Psylo XC
The Psylo XC provides reliable performance that can cope with the hits at a remarkable price. A mass of features make this fork incredible value. It is suited equally well to cross country, enduro, downhill or dual slalom riding.

WEIGHT3.98lbs
TRAVEL80-125mm
CONSTRUCTION
The Psylo XC has an aluminium crown and high quality EA70 aluminium upper tubes. These mean that the fork is lightweight, but also strong. Magnesium castings also mean lightness, but also provide incredible stiffness for performance.
FUNCTION
This fork is coil sprung. It uses Rockshox's Hydracoil system which has an open oil bath damper. This means that all moving parts are constantly lubricated for a smooth action which irons out the smaller bumps in the trail. In the Psylo XC there is a Homer valve which enables the fork to handle bigger hits by blowing off the additional pressure. It also serves to release air which may reduce the effectiveness of damping. The Psylo XC has 12mm of negative travel to prevent top out occurring. It is also one of the two forks which includes the Vari-Travel system. This means that travel can be adjusted between 80 and 125mm through simple screw adjustment. Rebound adjustment stops your fork returning too quickly.
MAINTENANCE
Through using an open bath system, Rockshox enable the components within the Psylo XC are constantly lubricated. This means that you can spend less time maintaining the fork and more time out on the trail.
This versatile fork is suited to a variety of applications, as is suggested by its adjustable travel.

Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $149.00
Purchased At:PricePoint.com
Strengths:Low cost!
Additional strength for heavier riders.
Weaknesses:OK damping.
Plastic preload adjusters (get the aluminum replacements!)
Similar Products Used:Manitou Magnum R
Bike Setup:Specialized Rockhopper A1 FSR Comp
Bottom Line:This is NOT a DH fork! You simply can't get a decent DH fork for this price.

That said, it is a pretty good freeride fork especially for the price. I am a larger rider (6'3", 200lb), so the added strength of a DC fork is nice.

The damping isn't the greatest. Unlike some of the other reviews, I haven't blown the cartridge. However, I don't have it cranked up all the way either.

I don't do any huge drops, so I can run the preload and damping a little softer than some may. I adjust both depending on the terrain I will encounter and if I guess right I might bottom it out once or twice a ride. I can now run flat out through some pretty rough stuff, letting the suspension do its job of keeping the tires on the ground. The Judy XL's 100mm travel is a much better match for my bike's 112mm of rear travel than the stock 63mm fork was!

Bottom Line - If you're a big rider and want a decent fork to replace your cheap original, this one is worth considering if you can get it at a low price. If you're looking for a DH fork, look elsewhere.

Sure i could buy springs, chuck some heavy oil in but why bother? i got em only cos they cost me nothing, im not going to spend anything on bad forks now.

Sponsorships are impossible, because all the money goes to sports like football, basketball and volleyball. Mountain biking is not so developed in Yugoslavia, probably due to high prices of racing bikes and components.
However, my friends and me are giving much effort in popularization of this beautiful sport, under the name of MTB Fanatic.

Similar Products Used:Indy SL Long Travel
Bike Setup:Trek Y-11 carbon-fibre as a playbike, XT groupset, Judy front, Fox Vanilla coil-over-oil rear
Bottom Line:I've read a lot of reviews about these forks which suggest they aren't up to much, but I picked mine up for £200 when the previous rrp had been nearly £600, and I have not had single problem with them in two years.
After 12 months hard and dirty riding in the Peak District, I thought I ought to strip them down, and did so. Inside, they were absolutely pristine - the seals and gaiters had kept EVERYTHING out.
They give a reliable 4" of front travel which has never let me down yet, and matches well with the 4" of rear travel off the Y-11's Fox Vanilla.
They were slightly bendy against the XT V-brakes, but a cheap U-type brake-booster stopped that.
I reckon these forks will give years of good service if -
a) you keep the gaiters on, the seals greased and clean the top of the forks after every dirty ride.
b) you don't start jumping the bike bigtime, which strikes me as the killer of any mid-range front-fork.

Bottom Line:Anyone one who complains about the feel of this fork is just looking for something to whine about. Granted they bottom out easy, but with a little thing called skill this wont happen. Instead of the fork increasing stiffness a couple of inches into the travel, it goes all the way at the same rate. Not a DH quality, but killer for freeriding and dual slalom. Very responsive, makes rocky descents a little more tolerable. Happy trails,

When my damping cartridge burst the 1st time, it was fixed under warranty, and they totally changed the damping system, and even fitted new bushings and the 2000 Samurai seals. There wasn't much point in this, coz the damping got broke half an hour of riding after I got them back. It isn't to soft, as was noted by others and it is setup just right for the bike I'm riding. I run 210# air in the rear shock and run the XL with damping set for fast response and the preload 1/4 turn from all the way soft. I'm 185# and this fork came outof the box Stiff. I've notice no problems with the cartiridge leaking and the damper works well and is noticable when turned up to slow the response. The fork tracks well and is way adjustable. I was able to get XC geometry with the top arch flipped upside down. This fork gives me much more feedback than any single crown fork I have ever used. It is the best $150 I have spent in a while. I still have my Z2 on the singlespeed and the XMO SL02 on the AMP B4 that I race and I love them for their intended purposes, but this fork outperfoms them for overall day in day out use. Bottom Line:OK, for anyone that complains about bottoming....Do something about it morons! You can rebuild the damper with a higher weight oil. My fat a** is 205 lbs and I bottom the crap out of it. Therefore I will use my mechanical skills to rebuild the damper with some 10 weight oil. It takes about 1 hour tops. This fork is sweet for major drop offs and jumps. I rebuilt my old Manitou FS with 20 weight oil in the damper. It was freakin sweet but pretty harsh. Keeping the spring rate somewhat soft for small hits and increasing the damping rate is the key set up for huge hits. The XL lets you keep it softer than the FS with the extra 1 of travel. This fork lets me go more balls out than ever. Its great showing off on your bike by riding huge stuff. You can totally screw up jumps on this fork and not worry cause the suspension will help you recover. Im majoring in Automotive Enginnering and specializing in vehicle dynamics so setting up suspension systems on the bikes is great fun and very easy to do. It requires only the brain of a chipmunk.

And then there was the gradual oil level rise in the fork. When the cartridges are new these forks work very well and are a good product. Problem is, once the warranty runs out the cartridges become expensive (in Australia at least). Worst part is time waiting for spares and this is my biggest worry with Rock SHox products.

The cartridge! Mine blew out after a half year of use, fixed under warrenty. My buddy with the same fork has blown two cartridges in the same time span. Also the dampening is not very adjustable. Needs to have more rebound control.

Bottom Line:I feel this is a pretty decent fork, but it is not without its faults. The cartridge is the main problem area. The dampening knob does not offer enough adjustment range and the dependability of the C3 cartridge is not very good. Fortunitly Rock Shox is a good company and their customer service and warrenty Depts have never let me down. I like this fork and have had no problems other than the cartridge. The new hydracoil is pretty sweet though, so sometime in the future I may upgrade. Good enough for 4 chilis.

I got the 98 XL-C on a slightly used Gary Fisher Level Betty. I am very impressed with the performance. I weigh 240lbs and the stock set-up works fine, I've never had a problem with bottoming out yet. My only concern is that the first owner removed the boots, which isn't a good idea in Wa where it rains 300 days out of the year. So in a really muddy ride, they seized up-no travel at all. This scared the hell out of me, being kind of new to the game. But I just went to R.S.'s web sit, printed out the manual and serviced them myself. Now, they are better than new. A quality product I say.

I have had the Judy XL for about a month now, and I love it. I do have one complaint (like alomost everyone else). The dampaning is NOT noticeable. I can't tell any difference between fully open and closed. That is the only thing wrong with it. Stiffness is superb, and having 4 of plush travel is great. Plus it makes mike bike track like it was on rails. Would give it 5 chillies, except for the dampaning!

Im not quite sure why everyone is whining about this fork. I put it on my joshua Z0 and I could not be happier. I had a Judy XC on before, and the improvement from that was amazing with the XL. XCs are pretty strong forks for XC, but these XLs smoothed everything out. I had to replace my rear spring with a lighter one to accomodate the increased plushness up front. Ive never blown them, barely done anything to maintain them (just a lil butter now and then), and just keep pounding them. They like it and have worked wonderfully. No one I know has had many problems with them, XC or DH. Certainly worth the cash.

If it works the fork works well. After 1500 miles the rings in the forks i have to change.

No problems with the cartridge itself so far, but my brother has the same fork and he blew it already.

I have ridden the XL for three months now. For a bike like mine, which is my x-country leaning towards DH, it is an ideal fork. It has steel springs left and right, and one cartridge. The damping cartridge doesn't have adjustablility, even though there is a knob to adjust it. I don't feel it flex at all, and perhaps those guys that have said it is flexy weigh 200 lbs, or ride 50mph all the time. I give the forks a lot of beating, and the cartridge has not blown, fortunately. It beats the others in weight, the Manitou and ZZYZX come with elastomers (what the f***), and it has been maintenance free so far. If Manitou comes out with one of these single crown, long travel deals, it will probably have the XL beat. For now, Judy XL burns four.

I got a chance to ride a 98 SL recently and I can only say that it works like my 97 SL home-set up with multiple springs. The idea of multiple springs is really old and it ... kind works, actually it is just a cheap way to fix a problem (so cheap that I did it myself) and it works so little that almost nobody uses it. The performance of the fork is usual cartridge/sping stuff plus the added problem of the usual flex in the Judy's. A pretty marginal fork, difficult to adjust (try to change rebound!), flexy, uncapable to deal with a wide range of different hits.
It is a good trail bike fork: relatively smooth tarrain, no roots, no high speed hits ... if you do that kinf of riding it is ok\hard trails/off trail ... forget it

I bought Judy XLs several months ago based on Magazine reviews. I reckon that there is a definite Quality problem here! Some people reckon they're fine, others like me despise them! Yes, they're stiff, light and look OK, but the C3 Cartridges seem to be yet another example of RockShox engineers using us as guinea pigs for their ideas!I suppose they put ther oil in the lower legs to test for leaks before the '99 models. Shame that it slows down the bedding in. Try removing the oil for the first few rides. Has any body else noticed that the cart has pathetic adjustment qualities. I can't tell if turning the knob makes any difference at all! I swapped a pair of '96 DH judys for these and I really miss my WB Hardbody+ cart and speed springs! If you must fall for RockShox' marketing hype, wait for the hydrocoil '99 forks. At least you'll benefit from the free testing we mugs did for RockShox this year!!!!!Overall, forks three, cartridge (re)design, minus two!

He took the cap of and the thing leaked like thee Exxon Valdez Spewing Oil out like you wouldn't believe.
He took the thing to the LBS the second time, Sean said O no, these things are not going to start coming Back, Now The Cartridge was grenaded again. He now will never get a Rock Shit product again, with PROOF. I cannot understand how a United States made product is so SHITTY!!!! R.S.should have cleaned up on every one else!!

This is a decent fork and rides very well, but there certainly is room for design improvements here! The cartridge damper is an absolute piece of shit. It is hard to adjust, the knob is a piece of shit plastic, and i can't even tell if the damping is working or not. Nevertheless, i will replace with a new cartridge and see if i notice any difference. Also i understand you wanna save weight on a bike, but there is something to be said about using metal top caps and think that would make the fork more durable in the long run. Also, how can they call it an open bath design with 2 teaspoons of oil in each leg? I have a bomber cross-country fork on my other bike and that fork is designed so much better. Adjuster knobs are easy to turn, made out of metal, cartridge open to the oil bath is much better! Judy looks cool and rides fine even without knowing the damping is working or not. Could use some overall improvements though to make it less of a headache.

It added half a pound to my bike and now it climbs a little slower, but going down I can go so much faster and in more control. The fork is stiff and steering is instant.
