Strengths:
it's 4 years old, has been used a lot and probabely got poor maintenance from previous owner: no leak or funny noises so far! It feels good and smooth on my daily urban assault or weekend xc rides. Does't pump too much and feels safe when hard breaking on bumpy hard pack. Eats happily the bumps and holes that cross my way (urban stuff or weekend high speed forest rides)
Weaknesses:
not realy suitable for hardcore moutain trials (bumps&jumps); but neither is the rest of my bike...

Bottom Line:
maybe not a high end xc shock but it wont let you down or require carefull maintenance. No worries if you find one on a used bike.

Stiff and very good, progressive damping. Excellent seals, used to be a Rockshox weakness.

A bit heavy, but that's the price of plush coils and oil! No rebound adjuster (change the oil lazy!).
A very good fork for the money! Mine are prototypes ("Prototype" laser etched on steerer and crown) and have 125mm travel and appear to have 10wt oil (I believe 5wt is standard). I swapped to 12.5wt synthetic motorcycle fork oil and it suits me much better.

Bike Setup:

Bottom Line:
I like it, it makes you wonder what all the adjustable thingies on other forks are for. It might not be the most sophisticated, but I give it 4 chillies because it has always given me confidence and never let me down, even on the hardest trails.

The fork is definetly heavy, but who cares, im not a weight buff, and what else do you expect from an all travel fork? Im sad to say that i am getting rid of it and getting a 2002 Duke SL..only because im getting into more serious riding, and need something a little more responsive. But im going to keep my Judy XC...jsut incase. If you can get a hold of this fork somehow, do it, great upgrade over a Jett or manitou magnum.

Take the time and set it up to your liking (travel, springs, oil) and you will smile a happy little smile as you demolish anything in your path. Just make sure to have a quality rear shock that compliments it or you'll have an unbalanced ride. I'd prefer the XLC version with dual crowns though and think the extra rigidity would be worth the additional weight PLUS the added benefit of not having the front wheel spin around and rip your shift cables and brake lines out. No leaks or noises in 2yrs of hard use. Forget the boots, they aren't needed.

This a totally bomb proof fork. It's to bad that this has moved down the food chain in the 2002 line-up.
You don't need much mechanical "know-how" to maintain or rebuild this fork. It's alittle on the heavy side, but it sure can take a beating. I've had it for about year now and I have ridden it in winter. Without fail, this fork is works consistently in all seasons, hot or cold. It came stock on my ride but I'd say it was well worth keeping (I was going to switch it out). If you're looking for an low maintenance fork, with a bomb proof design and you don't mind the weight then this forks for you. It may be alittle heavy for racing but it is an excellent weekend warrior fork.

I was more than happy with this product. It was leaking and hissing a lot a first, but was not an issue once I broke it in. It bounces quite a bit on climbs, but that may be due to my ht./wt. (5'8" 200lbs.) I just bought a new frame and can no longer use this fork because the steerer tube was cut down to 7 inches making it too small. I'm in the process of shopping for a new fork, possibly a Judy SL or Duke XC since they've gotten good ratings on this site.

I think that Rock Shox has really rethought what they were doing. Lots of travel, lots of durability. There is one caveat though! These are not racing forks. They're a little too heavy for that. The shop are fixing it for me under guarantee, but I've decided to get some Marzocchi Z1 Drop Off or JrT forks when i've got the cash. Just don't push them past there limits, which in this case, isn't very far at all. Fine if you ride once a week in the summer, but anybody who likes to ride all week and ride there bike fast and see riding as a adventure all year long wont be satisfied. This is a great fork. My bike came stock with an Nsync Front fork and it didn't soak up anything a whole lot. So I got the 2000 RockShox Judy XC with 63/80/100mm of travel. Great fork for any cross country rider or someone that jumps alot because of the 100mm.
Weaknesses:
None at all
Similar Products Used:

Bike Setup:
2000 Marin Shoreline trail.
Bottom Line:
The fork I had before this one didn't soak up roots or logs very well or dropoffs. The Judy XC soaks up everything. You can go over roots and not even know that they are there. Then you can go over a nice sized dropoff and don't even feel a thing. But the fork never bottoms out. Nice Disc Brake holders to. I say that any Cross Country rider purchase this as there next fork.

Bottom Line:
The Judy XC is a good choice for cross-country riders and all those who just enjoy mountain-biking. You get a good fork for the money. Serious racers are definetely better off with a SID because the Judy is pretty heavy. It's not a good choice for more extreme stuff also. Do yourself a favor and get a Marzocchi Z5 if you want to thrash. But for average riding it's quite well suited. The only major drawback is the maintainance. If you ride in wet/cold/dirty conditions you'll find yourself maintaining the fork more often than riding, but that goes for all RockShox IMO.

I am over 200 lbs. and the XL frame on my bike came with a Judy spec'ed for a 165 lb. rider. Duh. I find that the heavier spring upgrade made a WORLD of difference. She delivers for a relatively cheap fork.
The spring upgrade might be a good idea if you are 170+ lbs. or are a bonzai rider. It took my riding up a lot when I stuck the springs in. I feel like I can go over anything.
I flubbed a move the other day and hit a big log HARD. I think I closed my eyes in anticipation of death and dismemberment. When I came to and opened my eyes, I was atop the log mounted upright on my steed, and all I had to do was pedal off. Judy had absorbed the hit and spit me out, right onto the top of the log. Thanks Judy.

this is kind of a follow up review to my last one. this fork ROCKS! the travel is great, i dont think i'll ever buy another fork that has less than 100mm. i read the article in MBA about leaving hydracoil forks upside down, so i did, and the damping seemed to disappear for a couple minutes. i figure that is from having all the oil flow up into the top of the fork. after pumping up and down maybe 10 times, the feeling lessens until it is back to normal. i dont think i've bottomed it yet. i guess i should check how much travel i'm gettin out of it. also, i cant get either of the retarded boots to stay hooked onto the lip seals, but its a good thing it has such a good sealing system anyway.i would run it bootless, but black stanchions on black sliders wont look as good.

They steer alot straighter than my MG91's. My old forks would just blow through there travel, so i was kind of skeptical as to what 1 more inch would do for me, but it seems like it has 3 inches more than that crap suntour. One gripe though, that thing is HEAVY. I picked up my suntour fork with my front wheel and it was barely heavier than my Judy.

This was a great deal for these forks. They are very plush and nicely sprung. Adjustable travel is an interesting idea , although I will never set it up in the lower travel configurations. The travel can be changed in approximately 15 minutes, although the fork must be disassembled to do so. The ride with these forks is outstanding. They easily smooth out the small bumps, as well as the large hits. I weigh 215 pounds and the standard springs work well at 100 mm travel. I did increase the oil weight to 7 weight from 5 weight to change the rebound. There is some bob during climbing as there is no lockout, but I am willing to put up with that to enjoy the long travel and smoothness. Some say that these are heavy @4.2 pounds, but most forks with oil damping in this travel range are 3.5 pounds and up. What's 1/2 a pound...NOTHING!!! As for the swishing sounds that I read about in some of the reviews, that would be the oil running through the orifices that meter the damping of the fork. I do not find them to be noisy at all. I would recommend this fork to anyone, except DH racers or Northshore nutbars.
Weaknesses:
Can only change rebound damping through oil weight change.

This was quite an easy task even though they had to be disassembled. The ride quality is very good. These are the third set of forks on this bike and I can tell that I will be sticking with these from now on. Great fork for the money as they are on special right now at Pricepoint.com.

Definite improvement over the Indy C shocks. Much better feel. After at least 100 hrs of use one fork was slightly leaking however this is normal. So far no problems. SIDs are the norm on others but I always hear they are higher maintenance then Anna-Nicloe Smith. So if you want a good, trouble free fork without the $$ I would reccomend this fork. Only change I see in the future is swapping the steel steerer tube for an aluminum one or some other lighter material.

As far as RockShox go,the Judy isn't bad.In fact, the Judy forks are probably the only forks I'd buy from RockShox. How do they compare, you ask?Let's see:(SX v.s Z5 Flylight v.s Judy XC)
1.Ease of maintenance-The SX is the easiest of these 3 forks to maintain, because of microlube. The Judy still isn't bad.Although the Marzocchi is very durable,it can be a bit#% to take apart,I've been told. 2.Plushness-The Judy wins here for all-out big-hit plush(in 100mm mode),with the Marzocchi not far behind. The SX isn't as plush due to its MCU/coil design, but it feels more controlled and lighter...which,in fact,it is.BY A LOT. 3.Adjustability-The Z5 wins(air-sprung=almost infinite adjustability). The Judy has 3 travel settings, but you have to dissasemble the fork. The SX has the least adjustability, though if it's set up right adjustment won't be necessary. 4.Weight-The SX smokes the other 2 here. The Z5 places a distant second. The Judy is a heavy porker. No big deal--just pedal harder. 5.Durability-The Marzocchi--no contest. 6.Value-The Judy is about $40 cheaper than the Z5,and is about the same price as the SX.I'd call it a draw between the SX and Judy.
Overall-All of these forks are good.I reccomend them all. However,I personally prefer the SX and Z5.

This is my update to my review in May. It has been working mostly fine. I took it apart to change the oil(past the 100 hour suggestion), and I took off the boots. The seals aren't letting much in, but I might put them back on for the winter. When I changed the oil, I put in the recommended 4 oz. per leg amount, and apparently the manual is incorrect. When I put the fork back together, I discovered I was only getting 50 mm travel (in the 80mm travel mode!). I rode it and it felt ok, but it bottomed out too easily. I finally took off the top caps and I was able to get some of the oil out. Now I'm getting about 72mm, that's fine for me (considering I'm pretty light, and I don't bash into stuff). The moral of the story is, when you drain the oil, don't put more than 3 oz back in! I think 2.5 is more like it, since I got all the oil I could out of it and put the 4 oz in and got way less travel.
The fork is working great, and I'm still surprised how much the preload affects the fork's feel (a good thing). When it's all the way turned to the right, I get about 5mm sag (I'm 120 pounds) with a stiffer feel throughout the stroke, and when it's all the way to the left, I get at least 12 mm sag with a VERY plush, soft feel. Who needs a compression adjustment dial when you got that kind of preload? The fork feels great in any setting and that's the bottom line. If only it were a little lighter (maybe a little under 4 pounds).
My bike came with this fork, and even though the fork is great, I would buy a different fork (00 Sid XC) if I had the choice, because it's lighter and I don't need a really stiff fork since I'm not a heavy rider. My advice:If you're going to buy a new fork and you're concerned with weight, spend the extra $80 for a Sid XC on closeout (supergo.com or any other mail order place). The Sid will be plenty stiff if you don't weigh much. If you're a heavier rider, spend $30 extra for the Judy Race which has rebound adjustment and a lighter steerer tube, with the same great stiffness.
This fork is definetly the best fork for $170, so 5 for value. I'll give 4 on the overall rating because you can spend a little more money and get a lighter fork.

This fork is almost too good. I wasn't used to the amount of travel it has (Jett's SUCK) on my first ride with it, so under heavy braking it compressed like it should and I flew over the handlebars and broke my wrist. Gotta get comfy with the thing before I go crazy! Performs well despite my little accident, and I found a way to get around the weight problem. I finally bought a Camelbak so no water bottle to add weight to the bike. 4 chilis overall because it was cruel to me.

Smooth and plus. Easily adjustable. Had a changeover on my Giant Warp DS-2 to these (Don't know why giant ever put the Jetts on it in the first place- they suck!!)
Overall, I love them. Great improvement on my Scott unishocks (gettting just a bit OLD!!)
Weaknesses:
I know suspension's meant to make some noise, but this is ridiculous. It's not a "swoosh" sounds, but a high pitch squeek. What really got me going was when I rode to my local bike shop and they told me that they really needed a service because they were stuffed (they're not meant to sound like THAT they said!!). They were brand new and I'd only ridden about 1 km on road with them. Guess I'll live with it (I still ove them).
The first day I had them

Plush & active over the small stuff. Able to soak up huge hits with ease. Affordable: 100mm for $250 Cdn is a bargain.
Weaknesses:
Doesn't feel quite as good at high speeds, but not a big deal.

Bottom Line:
For the price, this is an incredible fork. Would have liked a Zoke, but now that I've ridden this fork I can't see spending at least another $200 for a similar Bomber. Changed to 100mm for big hits, works great. As I previously mentioned, it doesn't feel quite as good at high speeds but it still inspires confidence. In retrospect, I think I should have spent $30 more for the SL, but I'm still happy. Highly recommended!

This is the best fork I've ridden for the price, and full-stop. I paid double for my '95 Judy's and they simply don't compare. As for the Girvin's....bllllltttthhhh!!! Get a life Bob. The beauty of this fork is the adjustibility. I cranked them up to 100mm and found them to be a little boingy at first - no problem, I simply exchanged the 7 for 15 wt oil and they're perfect. The next step or two up to SL (if you can get em in Oz) or Race provides a few nice little extras, but I think you cant go wrong with the XC. Especially if you're on a bit of a budget. 5 flamin' chilis allround.

Bike Setup:

Bottom Line:
Pros - This shock is great. It is amazingly plush and ride great on even some tough terrain. The all travel system is nice to have, but it takes too long to adjust so sometimes its not worth having. Overall, I salute Rockshox for having the idea. The XXX seal doesn't really help me right now but I bet I'll thank it down the road as it'll save me a lot of pitstops and maintainence. The plushness and performence of this shock is so good, that my friend who owns a Schwinn Rocket 88 Stage 2 likes my Judy's more than his Sid XC's! They are also adjustable as hell. the only things you cant adjust externally are the rebound rate and all travel.
Cons - I would have preferred that I could have gotten the Judy SL or Race because they weigh half a pound less but that doesn't bother me much because my bike is light anyway. But if you are adding these to a bike that's already heavy... think about it first. Decide if it's worth it. I have noticed that these forks flex a little but as a hardcore XC rider I just about put these through hell in downhill runs and the flex that occurs really wouldn't be noticed in normal conditions.
Bottom Line - Overall, this shock is worth the cash and probably should last for a while. If you're a real stickler for weight though, get the Judy SL or Race as they both weigh a half pound less. I recommend this fork to any rider who likes to push his limits on the XC trails...

Clear Springs (aka Homochitto)
Duration Product Used:

Strengths:
Plush coil & oil action. Open bath damping, no more blown Judy carts!. Plenty stiff. Adjustability.
Weaknesses:
Weight, ugh. Adjustable -- yeah, with a toolbox and a spare hour! "Downgraded" XC model name.
Similar Products Used:
'95 Judy XC, Quad 21R; test ridden a buncha Headshocks.
Bike Setup:
95 Y-22, Fox Alps 4 rear shock, mostly SRAM group.
Bottom Line:
This is a really good fork. At its 80mm travel setting (how it comes from the factory), it's just right for XC riding on my Y, it gives a balanced ride with the reas suspension. It's plush; my first ride out, once I got used to it, I was looking for stumps to run over. Much, much better ride than my old Judy, even after I'd upgraged it with springs and a Risse cart. And the price! $192, installed, at the LBS.
Now for the bad parts. This puppy is chunky, no getting around it. The "All Travel" setup feature is nice to have, though a pain to get at. Luckily it comes set up for most riders right from the box so this isn't much of a problem. I'm 165lbs, and it was just right for me; YMMV.
One more thing, this isn't the "Judy XC" of yore, the sort of thing that got spec'd on an XT-level bike. RS is calling that level fork "SL" this year, and what was "SL" (back in the day when yellow fork legs were hot) is now tagged "Race". (Yeah, that's a quibble, but you'd be confused and ticked too if if Shimano renamed their STX group "XT".)
Other riding notes, this thing gives good control. In several rides and one race so far, the fork's steering and damping have saved my butt at least 3 times. The Hydracoil system rules, even at this price level. It's amazing how good of a fork $200 will get you now.
My reccomendation is to pop for the SL or Race version of this fork if you're doing an after market upgrade. The Race is less than $100 more, and it shaves about a pound -- a pretty cheap weight reduction by bike standards. If your new mid-price bike came with it, don't sweat it though. This is a good fork, and you can enjoy the heck out of it.

However, out on the trail it performs pretty well, and it should be good enough for most beginner or sport riders.

Lets see the folks at Marzocchi (whom I tried for about 3 months to get a PRICE LIST... which never materialised) beat this!!! (they still make good forks though..)

A true expedition fork at a walk in the park price...get the aftermarket version; alloy pre-load adjusters and full 80 mm of travel - Hardtail heaven!!!
