$500.00 | | Purchased At: | Pricepoint | | Strengths: | One of the lightest suspension forks out there. Remote lockout works well. | | Weaknesses: | Too much rebound dampening causes the fork to "clunk" (an expression used by another reviewer). It feels like the steering stem is loose, but its not. I could use high speed and low speed dampening but that would only make the fork heavier. The air only dampening is very susceptable to ambient air temperature. | | Similar Products Used: | Marzocchi Bomber, its a good fork but I wanted something lighter. | | Bike Setup: | Titanium hardtail w/ mostly XT components. | | Bottom Line: | It does what its intended, cross country riding, i.e. mix of regular roads with fireroads, some flat or gravely single track. These should be made illegal to sell in this country by the Federal Consumer Safety Board. It is the lightest fork out there but that makes it dangerous to ride. It flexes left-to-right over a pebble and makes high speed travel feel like your piloting a Japanesse WWII airplane. If you don't overhaul this fork every 2 months it will just get worse. from Pittsfield, MA Date Reviewed: July 8, 2003 | | Duration Product Used: | 3 months | | Purchased At: | Berkshire Bike and Blade | | Strengths: | Weight and lock out | | Weaknesses: | Some detectable flex, loss of air in + air chamber | | Bike Setup: | Stock Giant NRS-1 2003 | | Bottom Line: | This fork came through stock on my new NRS-1 (bought 2 months ago.) Really enjoyed the ride and the lock out feature for racing (XC only - NO Freeriding or hucking).
But then this past Sunday on a fairly mellow ride the shock lost all + air. I could actually hear the air escaping as it went flat. Certainly this is a risk to air shocks, but I was surprised to have it happen after only two months of owning the shock. Of note, I am an expert XC racer, but I do not huck, freeride, do drops or get air. I ride it for it's intended us. I am 175 lbs so I am not a lightweight, nor am I a heavy weight.
Thankfully the guys (Dave and Steffan) at Berkshire Bike & Blade in GreatBarrington MA have been EXCELLENT at getting the fork fixed (2 day turn around!!) and I am thankfull to them. If you need a bike and live in Western MA go to them.
So in conclusion for an XC race fork it is very nice and light, some noticable flex but that is to be expected on a sub 3 lb fork, but the loss of air (blown fork) is unacceptable on a 2 month old fork..... (thank goodness for awsome local bike shops!!)
Also, you can't run a lot of dampening or you get a clunk similar to a top out clunk. Stops as soon as you back off the dampening....
Without the maintence issues this would be a 5 chilis for performance (XC race only) 4 chilis for all around use - some flex detectable But with the blown seals it sort of stinks.....

Bottom line is they are great at what they're meant for - ie lightweight XC riders and racers. They're smooth and supple, easy to fiddle with and, having got Madison to sort out the seal problems I had, they are now proving very reliable despite 15-20 miles of abuse daily. They are flexy in dodgy situations, and seem to be a bit short of 80mm travel but they are a pound lighter than the competition and I'm told that the short stroke is due to a buffer they use to smooth the end of the stroke which is easily replaced. I might get it replaced to get the extra few mm back. Overall, if you want a lightweight XC fork and don't weigh a tonne yourself they're great. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

The only thing you should care about when adjusting the pressure is to always pump the chambers about 6-10lbs of pressure more than you intend to use, because everytime you remove the pump this amount of air comes out, but hey, this is so with all the air forks.
The last ride I did with this fork was an 100km epic with a lot of bumping and the fork is JUST THE BEST I´VE EVER USED. I must also say that I do ONLY PURE XC RIDING, I weight 160lbs and the fork is stiff enough for me.
The remote lockout, I could not be more satisfied with it, it is absolutely gorgeous to ride a plush fork while blasting the trails and suddenly arive in front of a monster-climb and simply turn your smoth fork into a stiff energy saving fork, this is simply done by pressing a thumbshifter (this may sound kind of nostalgic but everytime I look at the remote lockout I remembre my old Deore XT thumbies...good times), are you ath the top? No problemo just hit the release button and you get your travel back again. The remote lockout feature is also great to use on pavement riding.
For those who are asking what happens to the fork when it is locked out and you suddenly hit something Rock Shox gives the answer, extracted right from their website:
¨RockShox suspension includes a 'blow-off' safety feature to allow the compression valve to open slightly when 100 in./lb. of force is applied in compression when locked out. This allows the oil to by-pass the compression valves if the fork is compressed beyond 100 in./lb. when locked out. The oil bypasses through the blow-off valves and the oil sealing system remains in tact. This is a sealing system-protection feature.
When climbing, if the rider applies over 100 in./lb. of force over the bars, think about where the body is positioned when standing out of the saddle during a climb, the fork will slowly sink into its travel.
Also designed into the safety blow-off system is a quick lockout recovery. By slightly pulling up on the handlebars and decreasing force applied to the fork lockout, the damping oil and compression lockout valves will quickly recover and lock the system once again.¨
You can actualy ¨feel¨ this safety device by locking the fork and strongly compressing the handlebars.
Bottom Line: If you are a fit rider that only do cross country racing/riding and demands high performance, near infinite adjusting and low weight this fork is for you! Dont be haunted by the ghost of the bad sealings like I did before buying this fork, if they are defective causing air/oil to leak the process of replacing them is very simple.
If you do jumps or something more ¨extreme¨ get another fork, the SID wasnt designed for that kind of use. The SID was born to live in world of XC racing!!!
If I could I would give them 10 chilis!!! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

But I still wanted it for the weight and the remote lockout so I decided to ask my mechanic about the fork. He told me that since it is a air fork with two air chambers, the positive and the negative the fork´s performance was excelent but it depended all on the seals to do they job perfectly. He said that as long as the seals are corectly mantained the fork should run trouble free. So I just figured what the hell!!! I´ll try the SID it is also my only option here in Brazil since the Marzocchi and Fox dont distribute the top of the line foks during to a price reason and there is no Manitou distribution at all. So I went to the Bike Shop and got one!Since I was so woried about the seals I had a complete check up done at the shop before I took it home, they did not find any faulty seals causing any oil/air to leak but the Schrader valve at the top of the positive air chamber was not correctly tighted from the factory so it came out with the pump the first time they adjusted the air pressure... no big deal just tighted firmly enough and everthing was fixed. I must also say that I saw the fork being disasembled and the mecahnic let me know exactly how the fork works and how to correctly mantain and set it up, this made me feel a lot more confident about he fork. I took the fork home satisfied and certain I made a good deal! I have not used it yet so I cant say anýthig about performance and reliability but it must be outstandig since more than half of the pro riders have this fork on their bikes I let you guys know how the fork performs very soon ;-) | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

So I took it to the LBS and they sent it to Rock Shox (5 Days) there and (5 days) back, they were only suppose to only have it in house (2 days), which you would think it would take 12 days, but for some reason it took a month to get it back. Once it was returned to the LBS they put it on and I rode it in a race, everything ok. I put about 6 more rides on it and I thought alright this shock rules. Then the next race came up and it was fine, until I rode on it tonight and it seemed to not have any rebound so after I rode 10 miles on it, locked out compeletely for 6 miles, I took the negative air cap off and the shock fluid started leaking out of it. I said a few choice words and yelled this is the biggest $525 POS, I have ever purchased! Now its back to riding my other Giant with Marzoochi EXR on it, cheap but at least it is reliable. I have owned my bike for three weeks now and it has been in my possession for no more than three days because of this POS. The first time I rode my bike was on the road. The first pothole I hit caused oil to shoot out of the shock and it lost 20lb of air. Suddenly, my remote lockout stopped working as well. To make my list of problems short... please repeat the above in your mind a few times. The cycling shop is now telling me that they totally agree this shock is a POS and they are currently trying to get me a credit from Giant or Rockshok so I can put something else on my bike. According to the shop, they called Rockshock and told them my problem and they didnt seem surprised. The rockshock rep said that the remote lockout can not be subject to more than 100lb of pressure when engaged. If this happens, the lockout is ruined and the fork needs rebuilt!!! lol Nowhere in the manual or on their website is this fact conveyed until you already have this POS on your bike. Also, the rep aknowledged that large hits will cause the shock to lose air. I'm sorry, but how can any company charge the money they do for this "shock" and get away with it. I feel completely robbed not only of my money, but my time haggling with this. Negative 5 flaming chilis. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
