Quality components for the money.
Weaknesses:
Cheap shock & pedals.
Bike Setup:

Bottom Line:
Great ride for those seeking a good quality bike without breaking the bank. This bike was recommended to me by a competitive rider and it was the best MT bike advice I ever received. Likewise, I have convinced other friends to invest in the Raleigh M80. With some minor tweaks, it will be a versatile, durable, and economical stump jumper.

Strengths:
Unbelievably durable - I have done everything short run it over with a truck and it just keeps going; stock front wheel has held up incredibly; the perfect first bike; despite appearances, you can win races on it, which upsets competitors to no end.
Weaknesses:
twitchy back end, oversized Al tubing loosens your fillings, cheap elastomer shock, cheap brakes, useless shock seatpost. Wicked lame paint job
Similar Products Used:
GF Tassahara and Hookeekoo, Treks, K2s, some other stuff in the price range
Bike Setup:
stock f deraileur, handlebar, headset, and front wheel; xt drivetrain, lx shifters, avid 7s (best investment I ever made) sun hub laced to a cr17 rim in back, thomson post, eggbeaters, stubby profile design stem, and a low-end manitou oil shock I got used off ebay
Bottom Line:
For an entry level bike that allows you room to grow this bike can not be beat. I basically learned how to ride on the M-80 and I won medals on it both at Novice EFTA races and off-road tri's, beating plenty of Blurs, Truths, etc. (best finishing moment - guy crosses a minute behind me, looks down and swears "I promised myself I would not get beat by the guy with reflectors!")
The ride is all about the frame, and for somebody just getting into the mountain biking the components will wear out before you know the difference. The biggest investments I made were replacing the fork, which was because the elastomer was useless riding in the winter, the rear wheel because it never stayed true, and upgrading the brakes and shifters which really had a remarkable impact on my riding.
After 3 loyal years of service, sliding off rock faces at Lynn, crashing into trees at Trail of Tears, falling off the occasional bridge in Belmont, and generally being abused in the Fells I have finally decided to "replace" my trusty ride. However, I will keep riding and maybe occassionally racing this bike until the components all wear out. Since it refuses to die, and remains a fast and fun ride, it will most likely be resurrected as a single speed by way of a Singleator or one of those new Eccentric hubs.
That said, bikeshop.com and Derby cycle have gone the way of the dodo, but the bike was assembled and delivered by the Boston area ski chain masquerading as a bike shop. They never did anything to impress and I have become a passionate customer of Tyler at Paramount Bicycle Repair, where I just bought a shiny new Hollowpoint Expert RL.

Bottom Line:
Great bike. It is the first mtn bike that I have owned. It does shift smoother than the other bikes that I test rode. The dealer changed the seat out for the softas padded seat for free. The seat post does seem to help. I noticed that when I started riding with some friends who were beginners as well that I was not as stiff due to the softer seat and the flexible seat post. I did not have the problem with the seat moving once I made sure that the post was tightened as much as possible.
I did have a problem with the middle front gear warping twice when trail riding. The shop sent it to manufacturer, and they sent a new one made of a harder component. No problems since then.
It is a really good bike for the money. I don't ride on technically difficult trails, but the bike has been great for easy-intermediate riding in Asheville, West Virginia ect.
I also took the clips off. I felt more secure when riding on new trails without worrying about getting out of toe clips.

I looked and could not find a better equipted bike for the money. I bought the bike in part because of the reviews I read here.
Someone complained of the no name brakes on the bike but they work just fine! Raliegh put the money in the drivetrain where it needs to be. Brand name doesn't mean anything to me unless they work better.
I personal like the suspension seat post. I dont really think I would notice the difference in weight to swap it out.
I am well pleased and have no complaints except the pedals. I am an old roadie so the toe clips appealed to me. After a couple of real dirt rides I realized they had to go! They end up upside down in some hard spot and your not able to coast to flip the pedal. Then they scrap and can cause you to fall. Once I removed the toeclips I found the pedals are to small (front to back) and will flip under your feet. They will be replaced soon with wider platform pedals since I am not ready for cleated pedals yet.
If the bike is comfortable for you then I dont think you will be disapointed!

I've had some problem with the chain breaking, but that's probably because of the combonation of trails I go on, and the daily rides to class, this bike goes everywhere with me. I don't really think this bike would be that great for someone looking for a dedicated trail bike, but then I love to rip down paved hill on it and then jump the curb onto the grass and rip through the mud. This is my firts real MB. I was also looking to buy the Trex 6500 but it cost $200 and it did not offer anything special. This Raleigh is quite good for the price (even though I paid full). It is kinda on the heavy side (not bad)but the crank and other components are quite heavy. The frame is good. It has a 27 speed Deore LX setup that shifts VERY nice and fast on the rear but the front is only decent (it has rapid fire shifters) The susp. seatpost is nice but replaced it with much lighter Thomson post and I love it. The brakes are generic type and not worthy of the bike (will change to XT set real soon). I weight 190 lbs but the front Magnum fork can take it. The Vuelta Vision rims are also strong and light. Replace the very good Veloci Raptor (good mud, loose surface) tires w/ racing raptors because I am riding more on hard surfaces now for conditioning. Overall the bike is the best out there for 600 buxs and it is worth a few upgrades (crankset and brakes) and it can grow w/ you. 5 chilis for value cause I saw nothing better for the price. 4 overall chilis cause some components could be better but that is expected at this price range (actually worse components is the norm) If you want a better bike you have to spend $300-$600+ more.

The oversized aluminum 7005 frame can take just about anything. Deore drive train works smoothly(DUH, Shimano). Its very fast up hills and just as fast on the chutes. It handles much better and is much more responsive than most other bikes in its class that I have ridden.
Weaknesses:
The suspension post is a bit on the heavy side. I replaced mine with a Titec post. I also replaced the stock stem, which was a little to high (115 x 25) for my likeing, with a Titec Big Al stem (120 x 0). I wish I had seen the reviews on the Zac19 rims alittle sooner cause I would have swaped them for Mavics at the shop. The rear rim almost always has to be trued after 1 week of trail riding.

The seat! (Ha ha) After riding it the first two times, I was afraid my children would be born with little seat imprints in their heads. That is the FIRST thing I'm gunna change out. Strengths:
This is a 2001 model.. Great Deore components (Crank, Front derailleur, LX rearderailleur). Shifting is precise and accurate with the Rapidfire M9 system. Now comes with pretty good Manitou Magnum front suspension...very good for it class. Frame geometry on my 20" fits and feels very good. Nice attention to detail throughout and feels high quality beyond its price point. Velociraptor tires are an improvement on a stock bike. New rims (Vuelta Vision) strong for this 225 pounder and I have not bent them yet (a first for me). The suspension seat post adjusts well and actually works. Parts on this bike mesh very well and it is very upgradable! Mine is gold painted which is different and very eye catching. Superb package for under 6 bills.
Weaknesses:
No quick release for seat. Promax brakes (and generic levers) do the job but the bike deserves much better. Replace the seat. Standard Deore front derailleur needs frequent tuning. Stock Pedals cheap with poor ball bearings. Very Minor gripes. The M80 gives some room for "personalization".
Similar Products Used:
I looked at them all at 8 shops...M80 is the bang for the buck on the market (especially the 2001 model).
Bike Setup:
I got a GREAT deal on a complete Shimano Deore XTR lever-brake set front and rear. Odyssey Vision Svelte pedels, Serfas RX seat (very good). I may go with a XTR front derailleur to really "snap" the front gears into place. The bike is worth these upgrades and a great platform to grow with.
Bottom Line:
The M80 is Major bang for the buck. It is at an attractive price with very good components. Bikes costing a few hundred dollars more don't give the "added return" of this complete package. If you have a local Raleigh dealer, give one a spin back to back with a few other brands ...I am sure that even if you don't but the M80, you'll be amazed at the quality feel and great components they put on the bike. Value Rating in certainly "5" flaming "piles". Overall rating is a solid "4"...a few components can turn this into your own personal "5".

Best frame available for the money with components that will get you down the trail. According to Raleigh, my 20 inch frame weighs 3 lbs 8 oz

Aside from the Shimano Deore Hollowtech crankset, all the components are on the heavy side. However, they are durable enough to keep you on the trail.
If you are looking for a mtn bike around the $500 price point, this is your bike! The great thing about it is the frame - bottom line. Unknowingly, this bike has served me very well because I had no intention on getting hooked on mtn biking. Since the additiction has started, I have learned that with this frame, you can upgrade the components and wind up with nice bike. However, if you only intned on keeping the stock components, you still have a great bike; however, it will be on the heavy side of the equation due to the wheelset, fork, bottom bracket, seatpost, seat, etc.

Urban (alot) dirt jump, downhill, freeride, and the frame is great. The bang for the buck is tight too. It's hard to find a better looking or better spec'd ride for under $600 than the M 80!
Weaknesses:
The wheels. If you jump and sh**, than upgrade. I broke my back one and the front is getting there too, so I'm getting Sun mammoths. The seat is too hard, so get a new one. I use an old Cross Bow, but I don't think they're made anymore.

Bottom Line:
I'm very pleased with this bike. I was ready to pay full price but the store was having a huge sale so I really got a great deal on it. I tried several other bikes before deciding on the Raleigh. I liked the Gary Fishers but all of them were painted such ugly colors I couldn't bring myself to try them out. Also none of the other bikes I looked at in my price range had as good a mix of components as this bike. The Deore group works great and has given me no problems. Other reviewers have complained about the wheels but I have had no trouble so far. The suspension seat post really helps take the edge off of the bumps and I'm sure will be even better when I replace the saddle. The trails where I ride are tight and twisty with a lot of switchbacks and dropoffs and the Raleigh just seems to float over all of it. If anyone out there is on a budget like myself and is looking for a great bike at a great price, they owe it to themselves to check out a Raleigh.

Bottom Line:
Best bang for the buck. If you pay $100/$150 less you'll get much crappier components. Otherwise, you'd have to spend MUCH more for something better. Also if you're looking for a "comfort bike," forget it. Get the M80. It already has a suspension seatpost, so throw some on some smoother tires, comfy saddle, and riser handlebar (if that's your thing), and you've got a nice, comfortable bike. Then, if you get adventurous someday, you can simply swap back those mountain components and tackle some trails (or your kids can). Note to the buyer: those stock pedals may look alloy, but if you look carefully, it has a nylon core. I swapped the bike shop for full alloy ones for $5. Same $5 swap for that medieval-torture-device saddle. Ride on that thing for long and you'll never reproduce again. Otherwise, awesome. Great aluminum frame (same on M600). Shimano Deore EVERYWHERE - not just some parts like on others: Trek, GT, Diamondback (compare carefully). Nice Rockshok Jett XC for the price, especially for beginner/lighter riders. Decent brakes. Even got Hollowtech cranks! This bike should cost way more than $500.

I don't know how others rate bikes but in this price category, it deserves a 5 or better. We are really rating the components otherwise. To get a 5, you would have to go to XTR. This bike makes me very happy. It will work for weekend warriors and serious riders. The Jett X/C actually feels pretty good and gets better with use. I have had little trouble with the rims by keeping after the spokes. The Deore package works fine. Shifts flawless except under extreme pressure. Then again, how many do? The tires are decent for all the different terrain I have exposed them to. Shifters work well and the suspension seat post is a nice bonus although not a neccessity. Don't be afraid, ride a "Raleigh". It will go where you want it to. If you're real lucky like the guy at the bottom and can get this for his price, you would be nuts to buy anything else. I think it's a steal at $600 or less. Can't wait to see the '01 line. Go eat some dirt.

Best bike at the pricepoint plus 100 bucks. If you wanna pay $650 for a bike, buy this one. The Jett XC is a decent fork for a $500 bike, but I'm upgrading it anyway. Got a smoking good deal on the Z2 Atom 80. Maybe I'll put on some XT parts if I bust the parts on a hard fall, but these are great until they fail. Nothing is indestructible. This bike will easily handle tons of upgrades. Raleigh uses the same frame on thier M800 bike which sells for around $1100. If you want to spend an easy $500 to $600 bucks on a great bike, this is the one for you.

Best bike in the price range, I think. Deore all the way across the board. Cost $600 even with handlebar and pedal upgrade. Fairly (but I ride 14" frame, so that might have something to do with it). Good fork for the money. Comes with 9-speed drivetrain, so it's easily upgradable.
Weaknesses:
Front derailler needs to be adjusted a lot. Brakes are soso. Fork good for the money but I'd like something a little more adjustable. I weigh about 175 and forsee some softening in the elastomers after a while. Comes with crappy cage pedals and barends. Subbed out flat bar with risers and pedals with GT platforms. Seat!!!! Yick! May as well ride on just the seatpost. It'd be just as comfy.

Bottom Line:
I was attracted by the price, the components, and the good things I read about it right here. But some of the complaints made me nervous -- horror stories about the Deore components, the rims, the tires, the seat, you name it.
After three months of almost daily riding I can say that this bike can take a lot of punishment. The more I thought about it, the more I think that the harsh critics of the M80 bought the wrong bike. After all, Raleigh markets the M80 as "Mountain Sport" as opposed to their "Mountain Comp" line (the M6000 and M8000). You pay less, you get less -- but you still get a lot more for the money than you will elsewhere. If you want a rock crusher, spend more.
I've heard much about how bad the seat is. Seats are a point of personal preference but I find the stock seat comfortable enough for my one-hour daily workouts.
Let's see, what else is there? Shifts effortlessly and accurately, even when I'm climbing out-of-the-seat hills. The brakes to their job without problem. The shocks meet do their shock thing well. It's hard to come up with a complaint.
But what I really like is that it's a Raleigh. I saw my first Raleigh ten speed back in 1963 and I've always loved the brand. I didn't take them seriously for mountain biking, though, until I compared them head-to-head with the best of today's brands. They win, hands down. I'm glad the brand is still alive (and that I'm still alive). I bought it in white and those bright red letters stand out like a neon sign.
By the way, I paid full retail for mine and I consider it money well spent. I'll be riding this baby for a long time.

Bottom Line:
This is a good bike for the money, that is the bottom line. I've ridden much better, but for 600 dollars this is pretty well made. The fork is better that anticipated- the jett name scared me at first but it performs well. The tires tend to slip out a lot on steep climbs and in sand, but they are faster then my big knobby tires on flat and downhill terrain. Wheels need to be trued a little bit after trying some 3 foot-or so dropoffs. Front derailleur has given me some trouble, but nothing too bad. TOE CLIPS SUCK. I have whaked them on a couple rocks and they either loosen way up, send my foot flying out, or crack. Because of this, i am upgrading to clipless pedals soon. Overall, i give it a 5 for value because there isnt anything better in this price range, and I give it a 3.5 overall so i'll round up to 4.

I like the Jett XC fork along with the frame color and stability. It just felt more stable than the other bikes I had tested. I think the seatpost suspension is a nice touch on long cross country rides.
Weaknesses:
The stock seat is AWFUL. It kills your @ss. That is the first thing that needs to be replaced. I also removed the straps on the stock pedals before I replaced them all together. In my experience I found that I rather take a spill with either clipless or platform pedals than straps. I also had a hard time in the begining adjusting the front derailleur and the shifting action was not as smooth as it should be.

I am usually a believer of "you get what you pay for", but I think in this case, the M80 gives you much more. Having tested all the bikes I thought were comparable I still think the M80 is a better bike. I have had the opportunity to ride other more expensive bikes on the trail recently and I still think that for the beginner to intermediate rider the M80 is the best bike you can get for the price. I also feel that I can upgrade it in the future and not feel that I am throwing my money away. (i.e Judy or Sid, Shimano discs..) Without trying to sound like a infomercial, before you buy a mountain bike you have to test ride an M80.

the deore is giving me a little trouble with shifting into second on the front derailler but that's just a matter of adjusting so it's not really a problem and the seatpost doesn't really take to my appeal
Bottom Line:
This bike is the best if your just starting to warm up on cross-country riding and if you're already into it. The M80 is one of if not the the greatest bike for the price. GET THIS BIKE!!!

Bottom Line:
I recently purchased this bike and have been in love with it ever since. It is quick and light. I have only been into mountain biking for a short time, so this was an excellent buy for a beginner($500). The Mega 9 Deore system needed some tweaking at first, but now they work effortlessly. The suspension seat post is a good example of and extra i probably wouldn't have thought to buy before, but now i will probably always have one.
My previous bike was a Trek 6000. It was also a great starter bike, but I really liked the Raleigh better so far. I am not a professional by any stretch of the imagination, but I really believe if you are interested in getting into Mtn. biking you can not go wrong with this bike.

This bike is the probably the best bike for your buck! I have to give Raleigh the credit needed. I shopped and tested over ten high quality bikes, and the M-80 outperformed them all. If your looking for the best bike for a descent price, buy this one. The Deore components make a huge difference. Before I a 1998 M-50 and this bike pretty much sucked, the frame was OK, but the components were terrible.Rock Shox Jett XC, is very good with this bike at a price of $550.

Bottom Line:
Okay, dealer finally fixed the derailleur so it doesn't rub at the front but there is still some grinding on the front chain ring when applying hard pressure to gears with a lot of crossover. Bike rides great, corners well though I have a tendency to oversteer. The Mythos tires don't give me great confidence in turns that are even remotely sandy. Rims seem to go untrue very frequently, besides the seat I would recommend replacing these. I also seem to have a problem that the dropout slots on the fork are at a slightly different depth. This requires a good eyeball assesment of the wheel when re-installing it to make sure it's plumb so it doesn't rub on the brake pad on one side. Also have to make sure the skewer is very tight to it doesn't go crooked when riding. Seat post shock is not stiff enough for my weight (175) and I compress it almost completely just by sitting on it. I'm very critical, I like the bike but it does have some minor problems. Overall I'd put it at about a 4.

Really great frame. Oversize down tube is great. Same frame as M600 and M800. Solid, feels tight on turns. Brakes are real solid. Grips are comfortable.
Weaknesses:
Seat is moon floss. Replaced. Suspension seat post is marginal but functional. Components are fair but again, are doing their job.

Bike Setup:

Bottom Line:
I've had the M80 since January now and have put some miles on it now that the weather has cooperated. I still have the same feeling about this bike. Great frame (same as M600 and M800). The Deore components are not perfect but they have performed very well for me. A little clunky and slow shifting under pressure but I didn't pay $1500, $1,000, or $700 for this bike. Nothing that has affected my enjoyment and no problems. My son and I have found some very grueling trails to test our abilities as well as the durability and performance of this bike. It's been perfect. I am becoming adept at truing wheels but I kind of like that. The Jett X/C has just the right stiffness and cushion for my riding style. Maybe someday I'll put a Judy on with some X/T components but the way this thing seems to be going, it may be years. I did replace the seat. The suspension seat post is a bit soft but does provide some comfort. The IRC mythos tires have been ridden over some nasty rocks and sawed sapplings with no problems. Some short, fast downhill tackled with ease and some stress testing hills that this 42 year old has no business climbing but I did. The M80 is the perfect bike for someone that is starting out or looking to upgrade from a rigid or department store bike. You may never get another because upgrading may be the most fun of all. I give it 5 sun baked road kills!

Read the reviews on the shimano 2000 deore lx 9 spd system before you buy this bike. I thought, great, I get a 9 spd lx for same price as 8 spd alivio stuff. Well, I can't get the 9 spd system to set up right and the dealer told me "that's the price for 9 speeds". Great. Also had problems with the rims not staying true. Brakes are okay though you have to play with the pads to get them set to the right angle with the rims. Bottom line: the components may not be as good as the names they carry and it has major impact on the performance of the bike. The Jett XC shock is okay but generally about the minimum you would want for any off road riding.

Bottom Line:
I accidently posted this on the M60 page....what an idiot I am....so now I'm reposting here. I just got back from my first ride on the dirt trails, and I am very impressed with the M80. It feels light and nimble and climbs very well and the new Jett xc shock is fairly decent. Shifting from gear to gear seemed a little slow and clunky. From reading other posts on this site I find that many people are not happy with the new Deore mega 9 speed groupo. Many reports of poor shifting, chain suck and broken teeth on the cassette. I'll be fair and try to work with the set-up before I trash it on here. IF I can't get it to work to my expectations,I'll replace the casette with a eight speed and slap on my 6yr old bullet proof Deore DX derailer on it....I'll sacrafice a few grams of weight but that baby snaps into gear....I wish they still made them
I was going to get the M6000...but again I read some posts on this site about the dia tech mechanical disk brakes not being up to par...so I decided to get the M80 and spend the money I saved to upgrade it to my needs. As far as I can tell the frames of the two bikes are identicle and is disk brake upgradeable.
I bought my M80 at Sports Chalet. I wanted to go through my nieghborhood Raleigh dealer but he did not have one in stock and said it might be a couple of weeks before he could get one...and I didn't want to wait. But now I kinda wish I did because there is nothing like having the support of a knowlagable bike mechanic. The pizza faced kid at Sports Chalet didn't know squat about how to properly set up a new bike...oh well. Anyway.....I love the bike and I think it is a great value and you can't go wrong with it. I'll give it 4.5 flaming hemorrhoids...(a reference to the hard saddle it comes with)

After 3 weeks and 2 full reams of research, I went out to test all the bikes I could find.I had no brand loyalty. I even attended a Trek/VW event. I'm telling you, I found a ton of bikes that were more expensive. NOT 1 BIKE FROM ANY BRAND had near the equipment level that the M80 has. It rode sweet from the first stroke! Not 1 missed shift from the Deore equipment. I found that a lot of bikes used the Deore rear, but cheaped out from the front up. This slice of sweetness is all Deore. Crisp, precise and well behaved, without a trace of quirkiness in the handling. I planned to ride just to school and back. But after I jumped the first curb, bunny-hopped a curb-stop and went barrelling across a couple of unimproved lots near the shop I realized I was grinning from ear to ear. And the startled looks from the folks at the nearby car wash told me all I needed to know. If you don't give the M80 a serious shakedown, just go out, throw $800-900 at Trek and get less bike. Then don't blame me, because I saw 8 people ahead of me test ride the M80 and walk out of the shop laughing the the "brand names." BONZAI!!

Strengths:
Solid frame with an unbeatable mix of components in this price range. The Jett XC works well enough for any recreational riding that I'm going to be doing. The Deore shifters work great.
Weaknesses:
I found the saddle not quite in my comfort zone. While the brakes work well, the levers look a bit cheapo. Same goes for the pedals. I had two flats in as many days. Turns out that the plastic rim liner on the Zac-19's is a known problem area. The bike shop replaced it with tape, and there have been no further problems.
Similar Products Used:
This is my first mountain bike, but looked real hard at a Specialized Rockhopper and a Giant Ranier. The M-80 just had more bang for the buck.
Bike Setup:
Stock set-up, except I changed the handlebar to a wider riser, as I am tall with long arms. Since I do a fair amount of pedalling on the pavement, I changed out the Mythos XC's to Michelin Wild Gripper City tires. I am about to get another set of wheels for off-roading, a set of Wellgo pedals, and will shop around for another saddle.
Bottom Line:
Raleigh did a good job putting together this bike for a little over 500 bucks. The weaknesses that I'm pointing out, are more of a personal fit nature, pedals, saddle, etc. The running gear is hands down better than the competion in this class of bike(even those made in Red China).

Price, Frame, Company's fame, It's a great bike for riders who aren't thinking of competing in professional competitions.
Weaknesses:
The only weaknesses I can find (and believe me, I have look for them)are 4: 1.Color, there are only 2 colors to choose from. 2.Suspension Seatpost, it isn't as adjustable as I thought 3.Saddle, is a torture, I couldn't use it for more than 1 week. 4.Tubes, the reason is because they use the ones with a narrow, air gauge that makes you impossible to use gel
Bike Setup:
Original components, but with a Specialized saddle, Specialized Vegas lights duo,Specialized sport computer, Shimano clipless , Lizard skin
Bottom Line:
Overall great bike for recreational bikers, but you really don't need something more, unless thinckinf of goinf pro,

What can I say, for $449, a 2000 M80 is tough to beat. This bike has a great oversize frame, Deore front & rear derailers, crankset and shifters, Tectro brakes, Zac-19 rims & IRC Mythos front and rear specific tires. I am new to this mtn bike world having ridden a Kabuki road bike for the past 20 years. I already like the way this bike handles and it climbs like a goat. Looks great too (I got the white one) Only negative is a bump I feel when the front brakes are engaged. Could be just an adjustment, the rim is perfect. I looked at a lot more bikes than just those I listed above and nothing came close to the M80 component for component. I also read the reviews listed here and felt confident about the M80. I think I made the best decision. After I hand this down to my 13 year old, I may go to the M600 (few years away). If you are looking for a great value, check out the M80
