Exception being the Truvativ X-Flow... supposedly an entry level unit. I had a hard time NOT upgrading when I saw the square bottom bracket and forged steel chain rings, but I've ridden it for a couple months now and not a single complaint. Makes me think twice about the significance of such expensive technological advances in bottom bracket interface, wierd aluminum alloys, and chain ring design in all those other models. I'm starting to think whole ISIS thing is a sham. Anyway, the North Shore appears to be about as tough as it gets. Anyway, back to the point, these are definitely the best cranks i've ever used, not exactly trials specific, but they're very comparable to bonz cranks (which i would have bought, but hey weren't splined at the time). TRULY CANADIAN WORKSMANSHIP! lol
anyhoo, these cranks continue to impress, they don't flex like mad like XT, they're DH worthy, and super smooth and stiff for all sorts of trials related abuse. they're not forged from soft cheapo aluminum like truvativ, which weakens the cranks from the inside. These bad boys are machined first, then forged, in order to keep the strength in the metal.

I originally bought the Turbines and was told these would be strong enough to run on a dirt jump bike. In under a month i had managed to bend the crank arm and damage the taper on both arms causing the MRP to move from side to side as it spun round. These cranks were warrentied but i was told by the shop that if I did not upgrade to the Northshores and had another pair of Turbines my lifetime guarrenty would not continue. I had to pay an extra £50 to go up to the Northshore cranks. After a years riding of what i would class as not extreme by any means the cranks have deformed at the square taper. The cranks consequently ran out of line again. After arguments with The Leisure Lakes store they agreed to send the cranks to silverfish for me. On their return i was told that if i did not upgrade to the new ISIS drive the warrenty on a new square taper crank would therefore be voided. I have therefore had to shell out for the new ISIS cranks and an ISIS bottom bracket and tool coming to about £100.
On a DH bike i'm sure these cranks are great because the rear suspension takes a large amount of the stress away from the cranks. However with all the hassel i have had with the cranks i would not rush out to buy a second pair instead i would go for three piece. I will write again after i have managed to test the ISIS system because it is supposed to be much stiffer and remove some of the flex. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Many reviewers are posting for the prodigy DH crankset, which is far rom reliable, but theorthshore DH series is a whole different product.
I've been using this crankset for a year and a halfnow, through every possible condition (dry, hub high mud, etc...) With no problems whatsoever. When newbe sure to check the crank bolt for looseness (first 15 mins of riding, it will unscrew at pretty much every pedal stroke)otherwise the ISIS splines will get ruined and cause constant looseness. After bedding in time, these cranks have never come loose on me, not once. They have stayed perfectly straight and tight, despite all kinds of abuse (drops, months of hard mountain downhilling, etc...).
I ran into a tree and the mrp got crushed, bending the replaceable chainring tabs. Ordered some new ones and the cranks are as new. Can't even think of running something else really.
THe finish has worn off, but i really don't care. I just ordered a 03 Foes fly and these babies are going on it, no question asked.
If you can afford them in the first place this crankset is truely a long term investment, backed up with an EXCELLENT warranty program (lifetime) by RaceFace if ever anything goes wrong. A friend of mine ran into a tree with his straight on, and the threads stripped slightly, raceface got him a new crankset asap no question asked. | | Value Rating:Overall Rating: |

The power transfer from these cranks is great. I have the Freeride Evolve BB. You can buy these together for $120 at pricepoint. BB is virtually service free unless you ride a lot or go swimming in mud. Recommend for anyone including SC riders. I busted half the teeth off my stock rings both because they are crap and I learned not to change gears in the middle of a climb the hard way. Go get these. Better than spending $300 for the North Shore DH. I know that if my frame brakes on a drop, these cranks will still be intact. Check out the prodigy dh! I've had a lot of problems with my lx-cranks: creaking sounds and after 5 months of riding street and light-muddy trails all teeth were worn out! Gone! The sand had just grabbed tiny holes in this aluminium (can't be 6061 or 7075!!)and I'm cleaning my chainline at least after every ride in rainy weather or after having been in contact with sand or mud.
Be honest, after the bb the crankset is the most treatened part on the bike (think of the teeth's size!!) and I'm 170 pounds. High torque, changing direction twice every turn of your loved crankes. Sand, mud and every part lightly lubricated. Shiftings thousands of times. A solid steel chain and ALUMINIUM chainrings. And you want it lightweight?!!!
The dh's chainrings are definetely 7075 and they are forged!After 7 months of rain (Northern-Germany, here it rains 367 days a year)and mud they haven't even lost 1/10 mm of surface! I'm riding the 2nd chain and sprockets this year (7000-10000 km/year)and the rings are in great shape, OK, they are slightly loosing their black paint, but if you use lx cranks and your chain is falling off (some friends told me, this can really happen!), your UGLY anodizing get scratches as if your were hit by a train!
Also the cranks own a GREAT GREAT stiffness and they are not treated like a "Lehramtsstudent(katholische Religion Grundschule), der mal wieder die Eurithmie-Stunde verpasst hat und nun weint!" (something to do for your english-german dictionary!). They are getting what they are built for! No creaking, no self-loosening bolts and perfect silent smooth running.
I don't use them for dh, so I searched for sth. built for everlast. They will last forever! And you don't have to spend money as if you wanted to buy a semi-detached house!
So this crankset should not be used by "weightwatchers" who count every ounce on their bike. Don't eat chocolate for one month and you've lost 230g.

I do small drops, stairs, light jumping, rough cross country, etc. Perhaps these cranks are more than I will ever need, but then again, they will most likely last me a decade or two. I'll never worry about them breaking. I never had any problems with shifting up front (it is very good, as a matter of fact).
The point? You don't have to be a downhiller or an awesome free rider to enjoy the benefits of a slightly more expensive crankset. Buy them, slap them on, and go have fun. So what if they are slightly heavy? At least you'll have peace of mind.

The catch pin on the big ring rubs up against my Heim chain guide. | | Similar Products Used: | Truvativ | | Bottom Line: | The one thing that caught my eye with this crankset was the price. I ordered it from Pricepoint for $85 (Monthly special). I figured I couldn't go wrong with this crankset. After installation with a Truvativ DH BB, I pedaled around and immediately noticed how stiff these things are. Once you see these things in person you'll know why they are so stiff. The crankarms are thicker in comparison to anything I've ever seen including the North Shore XS. This translates to a bit more weight but I'll live with the weight penalty if it gives my 215lbs. Clydesdale frame the confidence it needs. If you're one to break crankarms or just want a really stiff crankset you can't go wrong with these. They are worthy of being in the RaceFace lineup and are certainly worth the price. Building up a freeride rig and want to save some cash? Creaks like an old rocking chair

Yes, they are definitely lighter. Yes, they are much better looking.
Yes, they creak like the floors of a derelict house!
I thought I might have somehow made a bad adjustment on the install. Double-checked, everything looked good. Still creaked. Brought it in to my local shop for adjustment. Still creaked. Thought, IT CAN'T BE THESE CRANKS, so i tried the setup with an XTR BB. Still creaked.
Pawned them off of some "brand-name poser" to put on his GT with all his other high-end, trendy stuff. Put my STX's back on until I can afford to get XTRs.
