Submitted by John a Weekend Warrior from Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Date Reviewed: February 11, 2007
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $30.00
Purchased At:Costco - Ajax, Ontario, Canada back in 2002
Strengths:A good variety of flavours, A good boost of energy, Not overly sweet in flavour, Easy to digest, No need to chew.
Weaknesses:Needs a few swigs of water to get the flavour out of your mouth, Energy comes on soon and not a sustained energy boost, You need to consume the whole packet as you can't re-seal it after you open it.
Similar Products Used:No other gels - only bars such as Powerbar, Powerbar Harvest, Clif Bar, Herbalife Energy Bar & Met-RX.
Bike Setup:2001 Trek Fuel 90 Disk
Bottom Line:This gel is better then a bar when it comes to ease of digestion. Still requires a few swigs of water like that of bars to clear your mouth. A good boost of energy, but not sustained energy. The ability to re-seal the packet would be ideal. I prefer to consume a 1/2 packet at a time for a better level of sustained energy on 100-120km long rides.
Bottom Line: Wow, a gel not a bar! Fast to digest, but no re-sealable.

Favorite Trail:Anywhere outside Bkk.
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $1.00
Purchased At:Various bike shops around Bkk
Strengths:It works, smooth energy rush
Weaknesses:Limited flavours & availability here in Thailand
Similar Products Used:Accel Gel (The best so far), Gu, Clif Shot, and Squeezy-(sounds like washing up liquid)
Bike Setup:Santa Cruz Superlight Dukes, Middleburn, Thomson, monkeylites etc race set up.
Bottom Line:This really works for all activities related to bicycling whether it be mtb, road, triathlon etc. We've only got tropical fruit, vanilla and lemon/lime flavours over here in Bkk so be thankful you can get other flavours in the US. The price isn't that bad either but I'd rather buy them in the States where they're sooo much cheaper.
Am waiting for some more Accel Gels which I personally find to be the bees knees. Strawberry Kiwi flavour is to die for and they work!! Anyone travelling to Bkk sometime soon please pick up a box and I'll reimburse you upon your arrival here in Bkk.
Cheers. My email is above, Ciao.

Favorite Trail:Still searching...
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:-They work.
-Very portable
-Edible in all temp. ranges
Weaknesses:-First few times with these things is harsh. (see below)
-Needs water
Similar Products Used:None
Bike Setup:'03 GF Tassajara
Bottom Line:Tried this for the first time with my dad on an 18mi. ride around Pittsburgh (road). I bonked after about 12-15 miles, and he had the cure.

I had the Caffinated Strawberry Banana. Aside from the fact that I hate that flavor combination in every other food product, it wasn't too awful. He described them as 'eating snot,' but it's thicker than that, and overwhelming in how cloying it can get. Ease into these things; you should be sucking the first few down without tasting them, and chase with a lot of water.

On the positive side, these things are like crystal meth. About a half-mile down the trail, the pain went away, and I just took off. The energy boost was perfect: came on smooth, not jittery or edgy. Now, problem is, you'll need another one a little farther down the road...

The consistancy and taste are something you have to get used to, but for a first-timer, it sucked. Other'n that, great product.

Bottom Line:I decided to try a gel and picked PowerGel because I've been eating powerbars for a long time. About an hour into the ride I had a rasberry (with caffine) and finished a 2 hour ride strong. The people I was riding with Were pretty whipped back at the truck and I packed up the bikes by myself.

Also, I tried one after the first set of a tennis match and closed out the match in a dominant fashion during a third set tie-breaker. My opponent was pretty tired at that point.

I believe that these gels work great!

Bottom Line:Holy Mackerel, I picked up a couple of these in the Tangerine flavor because of the "Double Caffeine" thought that would add even more of a boost, who was I foolin'. My freind and I stopped along the trail and I gave him one and opened on for myself... between the laughter and the need to spew I'm not sure what incapacitated us more!! As my friend Jimmy put "this tastes like ass!" I'm not sure how he knows this, but believe him and AVOID THE TANGERINE!!!

Favorite Trail:Burke Gilman and Pt Defiance Park Loop
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $1.00
Purchased At:REI and aardvark cycles both great online ordering
Strengths:Just amazing power when combined with the right hydration. Contrary to what another person from WA said, I think the Tangerine rocks :) I keep a few in the cubbyhole on my dashboard to warm them to the right consistency
Weaknesses:foil tears at corners of mouth, sometimes hard to get gel out when focusing on breathing etc
Similar Products Used:GU, Clifshot, almost every bar and drink imaginable
Bike Setup:92 Klein Attitude Horizon Linear Fade
Bottom Line:I race inline skates, doing 10k and 26 mile events. I train about 100 miles a week and 25 of those miles are some of the hilliest terrain imaginable down in pt defiance park in Tacoma WA. After being primarily a drink fan, especially Revenge and Prolyte, I decided to try gels and went for the PowerGel first.

Here's an idea what happened once last summer when training and after having had a Powergel: I was coming back on a ten mile section of our training route, amongst a pack of other skaters. I had just finished the gel and was hydrating using my camelpack. Along comes two friends on Litespeed racing bikes and i go after them accompanied by two other skaters. According to tbe bikes, we are going about 20mph. My two friends drop off but i keep with the bikes and we are talking about life, work etc. Well it wasnt long before they dropped off and i took off again, catching up to another cyclist so fast i almost ended up on her rear tire. I left her and two more bikes and basically arrived at the end of our training route about ten minutes before any of the rest of the team, who arrived with gaping mouths wondering wtf happened to me and what i had been eating. Powergel is awesome

If this sounds like bragging...whatever...its what happens when you train hard and happen upon a great maltodextrin energy source aka powergel. I wont say these results are typical, and anyone seriously into their sport knows that it takes time to get to know your body and how your metabolism works and how to feed it exactly what it needs when it needs it.

Strengths:So far this product has been excellent for me. I use it for running anywhere from 4 miles + I'm hypoglycemic and frequently hit the "wall" after running 15-20 min or so....getting the shakes feeling my blood sugar plummit. I take about half a PowerGel pack before the run with water and and the other half halfway through and it works! My energy level is sustained at least the 3 times I've used it thus far. Have only tried vanilla flavor so far and it taste fine to me.
Weaknesses:Not too many. The packets aren't the smallest things in the world but half of it is gone before I even start my runs anyway.

Favorite Trail:Rubicon Trail
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Strengths:Good flavor, lots of energy, convenient packaging. Doesn't have the proteins that some gels have--ok, this is not a recovery product, it's for energy, so why would I need protein?
Weaknesses:Would be nice to have a choice for caffeine or no caffeine in every flavor.
Similar Products Used:Gels by Cliff, GU, and like 5 others of random companies
Bike Setup:Jekyll 3000
Bottom Line:This is an excellent gel. It doesn't stick to the roof of your mouth like peanut butter as some gels do. It's flavor is somewhat remeniscent of very sweet yogurt. This stuff has never made me feel sick. The key is to down it with a whole bunch of water to dilute it so that your body can digest it quickly.

Excellent product for anybody who needs an energy boost in any sport.

Weaknesses:A little expensive. Wish all flavors had caffeine or non-caffeine option. Double caffeine tangerine is really bitter.
Similar Products Used:Cliff Shot. GU
Bottom Line:Best of the Gel brands, by far. Gels are intended to be quick energy, therefore high carb, low protein. That's OK with me. Excellent source of quick caffeine, but the double caffeine tangerine needs to go back to the drawing board.

Favorite Trail:Anything with dirt
Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:+Very easily eaten while riding
+Decent taste once you get used to it
+Cheap
+Low in sugar, high in carbs

Weaknesses:-If you put the used packet in a jersey pocket, it dries and turns stiff and a different color. Weird.
-Some flavors are only in caffeine and the rest are no caffeine, it would be nice if you had a choice with each flavor (some people might like tropical fruit but want caffeine, etc)
-Doesn't provide the protein that most energy bars do
-Takes a minute to go down all the way, when I eat it it hinders breathing until I can wash it down.
Similar Products Used:Just bought Gu but haven't used it yet, various energy bars (Clif, Luna, Powerbar, Balance, Met-Rx)
Bike Setup:Fisher, but what does that have to do with gel?
Bottom Line:Great product. It doesn't provide everything an energy bar will, but I can choke it down when I'm nervous about a race unlike a bar. It seems to get caught in my throat, but drinking alot of water helps. It is fat free and low in calories, and it doesn't have much sugar. I haven't tried Gu yet so I'm not going to give this a full rating. 5 value rating because it costs the same as or less than any other gel I've seen.

Strengths:It actually works. Easy to use. Flavors that won't make you vomit while riding hard.
Weaknesses:Takes alot of water to get a whole gel down.
Similar Products Used:Cliff Shots, GU
Bike Setup:Trek 9.9
Bottom Line:The stuff is great for a quick boost of energy. Much easier to use in racing conditions if you use the gel flask and put a couple of gels in and pre-mix them with water. One of the most important things about this product in my opinion are the flavors, who really wants to choke down chocolate mocha or peanut butter when you're racing in 90-100 degree heat?
Overall I'd say the product is geared more towards the racer who needs the quick shot of carbs without all the effort. Casual riders and weekend warriors can get by on regular energy bars and feel they're getting more bang for the buck.

Favorite Trail:1991 World Championships Course in Bromont, Quebec
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:High energy content
Quickly absorbed
Gives you a boost within 5-10 minutes
Easy to carry
Weaknesses:You need to drink a bath tub full of water after
The tear off tips encourage people to litter
A bit expensive
Similar Products Used:First gel ever used
Bike Setup:Xc race bike
Bottom Line:This product sure does give you energy, and fast!!!!! It's definetly a must for short runs (1 to 3 hours). But for longer runs (5-7 hours), I'd recommend using it along with solid supplements (i.e. power bars, granola bars, etc...). The gel is easy to swallow, but definetly needs lots of water to wash the taste from your mouth. The water is also essential to keep it from "blocking" in your stomach. I've tasted chocolate, vanilla and strawberry-banana. They all taste o.k., but hey... You're not supposed to be eating this because it tastes good! If you want a 5 ***** taste, go to a restaurant! When tearing open the packet with my teeth, I make sure only to tear it 1/2 to 3/4 of the way. That way the tip stays on the packet and goes back into my pocket. No littering this way! The only thing I'd change about the product is the tear off tip. Make a tip that only tears half way or so, so that people don't have to worry about dropping plastic on the trail. You could just tear and swallow!

The bottom line: Power gel has definetly found a place in my racing program!

Bottom Line:I combine these with energy bars, and other high energy foods to keep me up-right and moving during adventure races and other long events both biking and canoeing. I use a gel shooter which holds five gels (no nasty packets to open on the trail). I try and mix the flavours around because I may use 10-15 gels during a 36 hour race. My advice would be: mix your flavours, use with lots of fluids, watch your caffine intake, and never eat to much of this stuff at one time. best flavours tropical fruit, strawberry and lemon-lime

This stuff SUCKS!!!! First of all it tastes disgusting and second of all it made me throw up during a race too. Some people may love this stuff they may even like how it tastes but it doesn't make up for not eating right befor races. To get more energy just eat right and drink the right fluids. Well, Im done.

Man o man how i love to eat my gel. The best part of racing is when i tear open a packet of powergel and sqeeze the creamy goodness into my wide open mouth. I often make noises while eating it like, mmmmm man o man this is the best creamy stuff on earth, and then i taunt the other racers asking if they wish they could partake in the gooey goodness. Sometimes they say yes and i spit some of it on their head and then burn right by them because i am so fast and eager after a fresh packet of powergel. I would give the gel a 98 star rating if i could because i bet i would lose without it. mmmmmmm GO GEL

Energ gels work for me during traing rides where the intensity is less, but not during a race. Be sure to drink lots of water after having any gel though. I like all the Power gell flavors. They're not suppose to be delicous, but they are a lot tatier than other gels i have tried like Choclate gu and all cliff shots.

I had a problem with Powerbars. I would stock up on them, but they tasted so good I would eat them whenever I was hungry, riding or not. And that's not good, because it's as expensive as eating platinum. So I found the gels on sale for $0.50 each and bought a case of 'em. They taste okay, but not yummy enough to tempt me to indulge at any given time, which is good, because then I have them for energy on rides, which they definitely deliver on. Oh, strawberry-banana is good, although the amount of caffine in them is the equivalent of maybe a quarter cup of coffee (which most of you won't even notice, if you drink joe regularly).

This stuff rules!! I went to Dirt Camp and they give this stuff away by the box load. It rules. The strawberry bananna is the best. You can feel the caffine. If you take one of these like ten minutes before an extended climb. Drink some water and these mean the diffrence between walk and climbing your bike.!!
My only bummer about it is that there are expensive.

As the Powergel first entered my mouth, a sudden rush of weezyness came over me. I quickly then spit it out. And gulped down some water. But being the man I am I took the foil wrapper and guzzeled it al l down. Then my endurance increased greatly. Overall this stuff does what its supossed to but it tastes nasty.

At first I used GU which was not bad but after I run out I bought Power Gel. It was just as good but the taste was amazing.Straberry-Banana was the best one. I also run 3 miles every day and decided to have one gel before the run. This was my best run since I run 2 Min faster than my record time! Power Gel rules.

I've tried this product during races. I guess it did help me out a bit and give me a small boost. But man.. this stuff is hard to swallow. You take a slurp of this stuff and your throat is like clogged. You definately have to have water right away or you'll choke. Ill give it a 3=)I'm going to go try the cliff shot now.

THEY WORK!!
Use the Strawberry-Banana flavour with caffeine. Provides that extra kick when you need it.
Make sure you drink water with it.
Went on several hard rides where I bonked after 1.5 hours, took one of these and I was good for another 1.5 hours.
I always keep one or two handy on my rides.
Goes down much easier than the nauseating PowerBars.GET THEM....!

Well I tried the power gel vanilla flavor, & it actually tasted pretty good! Much better than powerbars (which suck, compared to Cliff bars). I haven't tried any other flavors simply because the vanilla is so good, it sort of tastes like vanilla cake frosting......now there's an idea for a new product....HMMMM Went to my LBS to buy more & they were totally sold out, guess I'll have to wait a while to get some more.

IN BETWEEN AKRON & CLEVELAND LAST FALL. TOOK IT AT MILES 13 -16 - 19 & 23 . IT WAS A DEFINITE BOOST TO MY LOW SUGAR LEVELS !!!
BETWEEN THAT & WALKING THRU MY WATER STOPS ( TO TAKE MORE FLUIDS ) I FOUND THAT THE FINAL 6 MILES WERE THE EASIEST THAT I'VE COME ACROSS IN SIX MARATHONS. WILL USE IT AGAIN AT THE CVS
MARATHON IN CLEVELAND IN TWO WEEKS !! THANKS FOR A GREAT PRODUCT !!!

I found two boxes of these at Uni-Mart for a quarter each, so of course I bought them. I hadn't really used gels before, just a sample at my LBS. I've used the vanilla and strawberry-banana(with caffeine), and they both taste okay, not great, but not too sweet. You do need to drink some water with them, like the package says. I didn't notice much effect from the caffeine, but I drink a lot of coffee, so maybe I have a tolerance. It does give me a boost, which lasts for about half an hour of hard riding, but it's almost instant. So now I carry one of these as bonk-proofing. Five stars at this price, but I dread buying them retail.

Just what I need to keep from bonking on 1hr+ rides or runs. Easy going down, but you have to take it with at least a cup of water. Strawberry/banana with caffine is the best. I'm not sure if it's worth $1.19. I would pay $.89 for sure. I do like it over the competitors. (Although it is all basically the same stuff).

I always thought Power Products were hype. Had my fill of Power-Bars and they helped a little, but. This Power-Gel is amazing stuff. Bought one at the LBS because they were out of Power-Bars. Cugged it down 1/2 hour before my last ride. Within 10 minutes I felt like I'd been hit with the energy from 100 Power-bars. Did my 20 mile loop without Bonking. I tried the Vanilla and the taste wasn't bad. I'm going to buy a case of the strawberry-banana ones with caffine. Can't wait for my next ride! Buy these things NOW!

The only down side to these products is that they seem to encourage brainless morons (who should be summarily shot)to litter. If I see you on the trail littering these things...YOU ARE MINE!!!!!!!

got 3 free packets of PowerGel at couple races, and decided to try them out on my 1st century ride. My
longest ride prior to that was 40 miles off-road. This ride was 100+ miles of roads & bike trails. I used the
Gel at the 20, 40, and 60-mile marks, and it made a noticable difference. Miles 30 to 40 were up hill all the
way. Not too long after the second gel (strawberry-banana) at the 40 mile mark (I was dying) I could feel
the cafine kick and my fatigue level flattened out and maintained at a comfortable level the rest of the ride. I
would rate the flavors: Straberry-Banana, Excellent; Lemon-Lime, Good. Consistency was easy to
swallow. Very little after-taste. The cafine was a plus, so I'd stick with the Straberry-Banana in the future. I
will DEFINATELY use this product again. Good stuff. The one negative: I felt I had to stop to safely
use/dispose of the packets. Another company's new gel in tubes with caps looks like a great solution.
