$30.00 | | Purchased At: | Online | | Strengths: | Ok fit, 0k chammy, good construction. | | Weaknesses: | At full retail a bit pricey | | Similar Products Used: | Pearl Izumi, Canari, Rei | | Bike Setup: | 6" travel, lite, xc, fs | | Bottom Line: | I just bought both the Elite and Ultra lycra shorts. Some 8 panel shorts fit as well as 10 panels, the Elite did not. The fit is only average, maybe below. It uses thick lycra which i like but the chamois is only ok. Gels usually come apart in the wash for me but from reading the post below i maybe should give the Century shorts a try.
The Ultra are a 10 panel short and fits like one, great. It uses a thinner textured lycra which they say is good but I had Canari shorts made out of the similar stuff that came apart in a year, hope these are better.
Got these shorts on sale and stacked a 20% off coupon on top of it so the Elites were only $28 and the Ultras were $34. good deal at these price, at full retail i would look at the Pearl Izumi shorts first.
Be fore warned these shorts come small. Lasts years medium is this years large, luckily i was able to easily exchange them in store. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Mountain bike- Fisher Marlin with several mods, including Thudbuster post and Koobi seat. | | Bottom Line: | These shorts have performed very well for me. They fit well, are comfortable on or off the bike, and have shown good durability. The best thing I can say about shorts is that you don't notice them or any butt pain and that's the way these have been. They're also a good value. $30.00 | | Purchased At: | performancebike.com | | Strengths: | Cheap, and decent do-all short. They look relatively normal enough to wear in public off the bike.
I liked these for two things, I could ride my bike to campus and about half way I'd hit the pool and do a few laps and ride home. I could wear them on the trails and then swim in them, so no locker hassle at the pool. Also, I've gotten in the habit of wearing bike shorts under my motorcycle leathers. With these, I can ride in my leathers and when I get to where I'm going, I whip off the suit and I've got shorts and T-shirt on underneath. Throw on some flip-flops and I'm ready for the beach. | | Weaknesses: | Gel seat lasted about four rides, and the leg elastic is *WAY* too tight on the thighs. | | Similar Products Used: | Nashbar, regular bike shorts. | | Bottom Line: | A simple case where money saved isn't necessarily a bargain. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

They all seem to be quite comfortable and functional. The 6oz short with the red or grey splice were comfortable on a 48 mi trip(the ones I sewed up. The 6oz light blue classic shorts are strangely thinner than the other 6oz lycra classic shorts but they feel good when its hot outside. The Century shorts are even more comfortable. I like these the best. The new one piece pad is nice and anti bacterial, so they say. I would say that all the performace shorts are good value for the money. $29.00 | | Purchased At: | Performance | | Strengths: | Cheap, fit pretty well. | | Weaknesses: | Fraying at edges of leg openings, stitching in chamois is starting to come apart. | | Similar Products Used: | Descente (my favorite - 10 years old and still going strong), Nike Echelon (8 years old and chamois is falling apart, but the shorts themselves are just fine) | | Bike Setup: | Cannondale M800 and M700 (MTB), Raleigh Supercourse and R700 (road) | | Bottom Line: | This review is for the Performance Century shorts with the older chamois (not the new one-piece). I'm a little disappointed in their durability. The edges are fraying after only a few months, and the stitching in the chamois has loosened up. I hope they'll last, because they actually fit pretty well. Initially, I had a problem with a seam that annoyed me in a sensitive spot, but that seems to have gone away.
Since I paid only $29, I'll be satisfied if the shorts last a year. I'd give a higher rating if the shorts weren't fraying already. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$45.00 | | Strengths: | Fairly comfortable | | Weaknesses: | Chamois and stitching tears apart | | Similar Products Used: | Old Performance HFS shorts | | Bike Setup: | Cannondale Road | | Bottom Line: | I have a couple pairs of Performance HFS gel shorts that I purchased about 2 years ago. These were very long-lasting and worked well.
I purchased 2 new pairs this year (April 2001) listed as "Performance Century Shorts" in the catalog at fair price. I thought I was buying the same product but this was not the case. The chamois (light tan fabric chamois) and stitching are a much lower quality than my old pair. I rotated equally between the new shorts and both began to fall apart within 4 weeks, or about 400 miles of riding for each pair. The stiching and chamois tore in the exact same location for both pairs of shorts.
The new gel padding is also different than my old pairs. It just never seemed to settle and always felt a bit bulky. Unless Performance changes back to the old manufacturer (using the black, leather-like chamois), I would avoid these shorts. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I'd upgrade, but I'd just crash at higher speeds. | | Bottom Line: | I've used two types of Performance Shorts.
5hr Ride Gel. Really lightweight fabric (5 or 6oz, I think). Great fit, but not a lot of support, and tends to snag easily on limbs, thorns, cactus, etc. If you ride mountain, the "chamois" snags easily on the seat nose when you're getting back into the saddle, making some easy obstacles somewhat exciting (like when you're popping a wheelie to crunch your chainring over a log - ouch!) Gel is nice and comfy for long road rides, though. One thing is that the gel doesn't breathe, so you need to stand and let the boys breathe every once in a while.
Elite Shorts (coolmax with new airstripe chamois). Super shorts. I bought a pair this winter and have been blown away. Nice weight fabric, plenty of support, but still keep me cool in the hot temps here in N TX. The chamois stands up well to washing, and doesn't seem to flatten over time during long rides. I bought another pair, and plan to gradually replace all my shorts with these. Not bad price, either. If you wait for a sale on the website, you can pick 'em up for $40.
Overall - 5 chilis for the Elites, 3 for the Gels - for an avg of 4. 5 for both on value. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$35.00 | | Purchased At: | Performance Bicycle at Tustin Market Place | | Strengths: | In the past, I have ridden only occasionally. I tried on and bought a pair of Performance gel shorts for $35. They had non-gel shorts on sale for $20, but I decided to try the more expensive ones. These were the first bicycle shorts I'd bought, and had a specific goal of decreasing the soreness and swelling in my crotch area brought on by my beginning to ride 12 miles each way to work several times a week. I am 6'6" tall and weigh 250 pounds. | | Weaknesses: | At first it seemed like the gel would really help, but after only one ride, I could tell that even though the gel provided some cushion, the gel pad did not extend far enough towards the rear of the shorts to cover the portion of my anatomy that was in contact with the rear of the seat, which is where it seems like most of the weight would be. So, I'm obviously disappointed by this and will try to return the shorts. While riding, the gel seems to shift away from the area that needs it most. In addition, when walking, the gel pad feels like I'd imagine a huge maxi-pad would, which I could live with if it worked well when on the bike. | | Similar Products Used: | These were my first pair of shorts. | | Bike Setup: | ~20 year old Nishiki Olympic 12 speed upright with a ~5 year old Avocet Gelflex seat. | | Bottom Line: | The moral to the story? Not only should you try on shorts before buying, you also should try sitting on a bicycle seat to make sure the padding in the shorts covers the contact area with the seat. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Next time I may get Elite, but why? I also have some RAGE (cotton) shorts but they're really getting worn out after 5 years plus. I ride at least 4 times a week, machine wash cold, inside out, and hang to dry - never tumble dry.
The shorts hold up well, but after more than 3 years there's some fraying from the saddle edge. That's still good wear - I've worn each pair hundreds of time!
I like the fit - find PI too tight for me. I ESPECIALLY like the quality drawstring - my PI's have no drawstring, and the Nashbars have an horrid little string thinner than a shoelace that gets knotted easily. I have three of Performance's cycling bottoms. 1) Century Shorts-Great fit, good materials and super price. I've had these shorts for over 7 years. They're still perfectly usable and just as comfortable as when they were new. Though probably the most durable shorts made, I found that they could get a little clammy after a sweaty ride when the temperature was going down. I moved up to their Cool Max-Lycra shorts. Their Supersuede pad is the best compromise of durability, versatility and function. 2)Performance Cool Max-Lycra shorts. These are the same cut as the other, better quality, Perfomance shorts. I originally tried them because my regular Lycras got clammy when they became thoroughly damp from sweat. I didn't find that they were any cooler from wicking, but I did find that they stayed noticably dryer, a lot dryer, and did not get damp and clammy. In cooler temperatures they were noticably warmer, without being hotter when it got warm. I found the Cool Max half of the fabric noticabaly more comfortable than regular Nylon-Lycra. While it was softer and more comfortable, it has also turned out to be more durabale than the regular Nylon-Lycra. It has taken a lot more wear, more washings and abuse and has not had any holes worn through it, requiring patches, unlike my less used Nylon-Lycra. I also tried some of their Cotton-Lycra shorts, of the same range, which claimed to have the added comfort of cotton. They were initially softer than the Nylon-Lycra and accordingly more comfortable, but the cotton turned out to be not as durable and not too comfortable when cold and damp. Unless someone invents some new and special fiber, I cannot see myself buying anything other than Cool-Max (Polypropelene or equivalent wicking micro-fiber)-Lycra shorts any time soon. Performance-Polypropelene tights. I tried thes based on a friend's recommendationa and from having good results with the cool max shorts...another wicking micro-fiber. The tights are the same cut as all my other Performance bottoms, with the same supersuede pad. They all fit me perfectly. The wicking tights are reasonably wind resistant in the front and definitely wick moisture away fronm your skin. Just as it said in some of theuir literature, when the temperature and wind are just right, moisuture will wick away from your skin and form a light coating of frost on the back of your legs. Temperature/comfort range is a personal thing, but I can ride without suffering down well into the 20's and they are not too warm unless the weather really soars well into shorts temperatures. I tried many other tights, none of which felt like they fit...they didn't fit like my Performance shorts. Their tights fit me just as well as their shorts...I was sold. For me their design and sizing is just right for my personal shape and anatomy. The cool max and polypropelene Lycra fabrics were the icing on the cake.
