Date Reviewed: January 18, 2001
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $99.00
Purchased At:Performance
Strengths:Simple to use
Weaknesses:Can not turn off audible warning. Beeping can be annoying when audible warning is not required at times.
Similar Products Used:Polar XT
Bike Setup:Serrota, D Ace
Bottom Line:This was the high-end HRM from Performance until they came out with the HR-600 this year, 2001. Great basic HRM. But I need more features on it, and I did not like not being able to turn off the audible warn when I need to. So I returned this HR-400, and got the HR-600 instead for $30 more. With the HR-600 you can turn off the warning sound, and you have last max/avg, and interval training. For something a little above basic HRM's, get the HR-400. But for a more great to have feature, get the HR-600.

Date Reviewed: November 3, 2000
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $140.00
Purchased At:Performance
Strengths:Accurate, easy to use
Weaknesses:Didn't hold up.
Bottom Line:The thing fizzled after a little over a year. Just past the warranty date. Up until then it was great. It is easy to use and seemed to be very accurate. It apparently just didn't hold up to being mounted on the handlebar. I'll probably go to a Polar next.

Weaknesses:The % display is hard to read & does not have a max heart rate function (which it appears not many monitors d)

Bottom Line:I think this will be a great training tool....just takes some getting used too.

Favorite Trail:
south mountain
Duration Product Used:
less than 1 month
Strengths:
displays HR as % of max
comes with bike mount
Weaknesses:
uncomfortable wrist band
doesn't record max HR
Similar Products Used:
none
Bike Setup:
Klein Attitude Comp
Klein Stage Comp
Bottom Line:The HR400 was made specifically for cycling (no lap splits), has lots of features and limit/recovery alarms which can be made inaudible. I bought it because its the only monitor that displays HR simultaneously in bpm and as a % of your max. This is useful for indoor trainer workouts, as you don't have to remember number ranges (ie 160-175) to stay on track.
I've started running though and the % display is small and hard to read at a glance while moving. This is not an issue on the bike though, as your upper body is still. It doesn't record your max HR for the workout though. A feature I sorely missed as I forgot to look at my watch during the finishing kick of a race. You do get an avg HR for the workout. The handlebar mount seems a bit dicey to use off-road, as its just a nylon strap stretched tight around a piece of foam. Works fine on the trainer though. Overall a lot of functions for an inexpensive price.

Bottom Line:

I have never used a heart rate monitor before, but I must say that the HR400 is a lot of HR monitor for the money. It has every function (minus computer downloads and coded transmissions) that you could want, including a user replaceable battery in the chest strap and in the receiver, water-resistance to 60m (so you can swim with it), and a handlebar mount. We'll see about the durability, but so far so good. It is also quite easy to use (no more difficult than a digital watch). Cheers to a quality and yet inexpensive HR monitor.
