I have experieced trouble with the frame - have broken 2 of them!

Bottom Line:
I bought my first 3000 in 1997. I was really impressed - light, nice features, great handling. 2 years later, my repair tech noticed a crack in the welds between the seat stays and the seat tube. I went through the warranty procedure of having the company assess the damage, and I did eventually get a new frame, but it took from March until mid May. (What I learned during the warranty procedure is a whole different story) The replacement frame seemed heavier, and had REALLY thick paint on it, but it seemed OK. Just this spring, I hit a large bump too hard and had a crash that folded the top tube and down tube right by the head tube, and cracked the weld beteen the top and seat tubes, all without taking the front wheel out oof true or damaging the fork. This frame won't get replaced on warranty because of the crash, but it seemed odd that it would break so easily. I believe in supporting Canadian companies, but I think next time I'll go with a Rocky Mountain, Norco, or Brodie, etc. instead of the Oryx. (Mind you, the same company that owns Oryx owns CCM, Rocky Mountain, and many other brands. Oryx really isn't an indpendent company, but a division of a large conglomerate based in Quebec. ) Overall, I'm left with a funny feeling about the quality and integrity of the product.

Bottom Line:
I purchased the bike in the spring of 1999 and was told by the retailer that the frame had a lifetime warranty. I weigh 180lbs and rode the bike over moderate terain for two months three to four times a week. Unfortunately I hit a puddle in the wrong spot and went over the handle bars with no injury to myself. The frame cracked at the two welds joining the two bars to the steering post. No damage to the wheel or Rock Shock. I thought for sure that this was due to a poor weld as I did not think I hit the bike very hard. C&S Sports in Labrador City, Newfoundland were very helpful and indicated that it would be no problem; the frame would be replaced at no cost to me. The bike was shipped and recieved by ORYX and assesed as not being a manufacturers defect and therefore they would not replace the frame. I was very surprised as I had not expected this response. C&S picked up the cost of the frame. I argured with a salesman from ORYX that it would make sense to replace the frame simply as a customer service policy. They argued that I broke the frame and they were not responsible. I then asked for documentation of the inspection/analysis that showed there were no defects in the welds but received no such report. At this point I was told that I would probably not buy another ORYX bike anyway. It's unfortunate that I had this experience because I am very happy with my first mountain bike. What could have been a life long relationship was tarnished by poor policy.I would like to thank C&S Sports for there diligence and commitment to customers.

Strengths:
components, and forks are great!
Weaknesses:
chain it's a HG72 u should up grade to a HG 92 and the rims are not really the best and the breaks i up graded to a XT paralell brake.

GT Backwoods is about the closest bike that i have tried so far.
Bike Setup:
judy c, solied LX with a XT rear derailler and brakes.
Bottom Line:
great price just that you have to up grade a few minor things just like anything else i guess!

Bottom Line:
I highly reccomend that you try this bike out. For the price range it is outfitted with some really great stuff. Made in Canada usually scares me but this bike rides like a dream. The one reservation I have is the OXII frame which is a bit of a concern to me since I weigh 200 lbs.
