Favorite Trail:Big Mamma, Woodhill, North Shore (New Zealand)
    Duration Product Used:6 months
    Price Paid: $750.00
    Purchased At:ebay
Strengths:Wicked bike seems almost flawless with looks and design. Reasonably light when you look at how much bloody frame its got. strong Ver strong, Never had a problem with it. The write amount of rear sus. when DHing
Weaknesses:Seems 'too simple' with its rear swingarm design. No pedal support with its rear shock system and you loose a heap of power when pedalling flats, doesnt bother me though cause i rip the DH then just walk up. Major weakness: its English. This causes some strange combatability problems which costed me a little bit more time when buying new parts
Similar Products Used:Kona Stinky Dee-Lux, Foes Slammer
Bike Setup:Orange 222 Frame, Marzocchi 888 RC2X WC, Hope pot brakes front and rear, Hope Big 'Un hubs, Fox vanilla rear shock (190mm) e-13 chain guide and bashguard, shimano 9 speed, FSA pig head set, FSA Dh crank set ( solid chainring)
Bottom Line:sick fram make sure you spec it how you like. otherwise you might thinks its a dud which its not!

    Favorite Trail:Peggy farrow North Shore
    Duration Product Used:1 Year
    Price Paid: $3000.00
    Purchased At:A bike shop
Strengths:Strong frame, pretty cheap for a downhill bike. Can be build up light.
Weaknesses:The back end on mine was out of line and twisted, its was replaced by Orange twice before I got a straight one back.

The suspension on this bike is very simplistic, you get lots of irratic behaviour from the back end when hitting medium sized rocks at speed.

Back end locks up when braking very badly.

The back end skips out all the time, the suspension doesnt seem upto it. I beleive Orange has been saved somewhat by the introduction of the Fifth Element style shocks, which improve rear wheel tracking alot better.

Frame almost seems too stiff, I think this bike is aimed more at the smoother riders as oppose to the full on point and shoot style riding.

High pivot points are a no-no nowadays with the introduction of better shock technology. Low pivot points and low shock positions are the way to go.
Similar Products Used:TOMAC, INTENSE, MR BIG :P
    Bike Setup:Race setup.
Bottom Line:Cheap and cheerfull would describe this bike. Ideal for the privateer. Simple design, almost toy-like, its doesnt do anything that well, but on the other hand it doesnt do anything blindingly wrong.

I think to sum this bike up in one word....UNISPIRING.

    Date Reviewed: February 22, 2003
Favorite Trail:I'm not at liberty to say
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
    Price Paid: $4050.00
Strengths:This is a light bike, Nime weighs 40 lbs even. Nice short chainstays, low BB height, adjustable
Weaknesses:has some pedal feedback from the suspension.
Similar Products Used:Santa Cruz Bullit, V10 and Super 8, Foes DHS Tube nad Mono, Intense M-1, Mountain Cycle Shockwave and San Andreas, Yeti DH-9, Schwinn Straight 8, Tomac 204 Magnum etc.
Bike Setup:2002 Orange 222 Frame, 2003 Boxxer World Cup, Dura Ace Der and Cass, Truvativ Holzfeller cranks, Giga pipe BB, Sun Ringle Single tracks, Hayes 8" discs Thomson seat post and stem, azonic bars, MRP slalom guide, and 5th Element
Bottom Line:This is one of the best bikes I have owned. Because of the 5th Element, it pedals like a 3 in xc bike and only weighs a little more. If you want a DH race bike, you can't go wrong with this bike. Buy one if you get the chance, but I suggest building it by your specs, not just OEM specs.

Submitted by Daniel a Downhiller from carmel, california, U.S.
    Date Reviewed: December 5, 2002
    Duration Product Used:3 months
    Price Paid: $2200.00
    Purchased At:mtbr classifides
Strengths:very light-weight, small, agile, rear soaks up everything and keeps the rear wheel planted, it also pedals well enough to be ridden on normal cross-country trails
Weaknesses:rear wheel buzzez on the seat sometimes
Similar Products Used:foes dhs mono, ellsworth Joker, rm7
Bike Setup:bombshell kamikaze fork, sun double-wides built on hadley hubs, wtb tires and seat, front derailure with 3 rings, and hayes 8" hydros
Bottom Line:A stellar bike. If I had the money I would have paid the full price of the bike, but I found a deal so thats how the bike came into my hands. This is the most versitile downhill bike on the planet. I use it as a northshore freeride bike, a downhiller,a trailbike, and even a dirtjumper. Downhilling is what this bike is made for, and that is what it does best, but if thats all you use it for, you aren't using it to its full potential. I have found through this bike that simpler is better, and this bike shows this through its simple, yet perfectly tuned and refined single pivot suspension. I would recomend it to anyone as the ultimate downhill bike.

    Favorite Trail:Black Hill
    Duration Product Used:3 months
    Price Paid: $4000.00
    Purchased At:"Pushi" in Melbourne
Strengths:Pedals like a demon, light, strong, agile, well spec'd.
Rails magnificently and accelerates like a mid travel bike.
I can use it on weekend trail rides and keep up with the 'budgie smugglers' on heavier hardtails and freeride rigs
Weaknesses:(Only if being very picky) Seat buzzes on tyre if ran too low, but that is only before getting used to the bike and realising that due to the super low frame, you need the seat higher than you think anyway. Floating disc is a little rattlier than standard brake.
    Rear wheel painfull to remove
Similar Products Used:Santa Cruz '02 Bullit (mates bike)
    Santa Cruz super 8's (ditto)
Otherwise, nothing comes close to ride/pedal quality
Bike Setup:Stock except for V12 pedals.
'02 Boxxers, Hope 4 Enduro, Fox RC, Hope hubs,321 rims, Raceface, XT, Pro Taper, Blackspire etc
Bottom Line:Gotta love the bike. Not too expensive for the build quality and specs (even in Oz dollars). Not a single corner was cut (except for pedals, which, lets face it, we all put on our own favourites anyway).
I wouldn't pay the extra for a floating disc next time, but admittedly it does seem to do what it is surposed to.
(hasn't hindered Global crew without it)
Can't wait till I can afford a Patriot. Than I can sell off all my other junk. With those 2 bikes you will never need another bike (unless you are a XC budgie smuggler)
If the '03 222 comes with a 5th element shock option, 'perfect' will become 'perfecter'.

    Favorite Trail:Whistler Bike Park Trails
    Duration Product Used:1 Year
    Price Paid: $3500.00
    Purchased At:Freedom The Biike Shop
Strengths:This bike is super plush and active, the rear end is stiff due to the through axle, and multiple bb heights and head tube angles are possible. This bike can be built into one of the lightest downhill bikes on the on the market with careful parts consideration and some money.
Weaknesses:takes abit to set up suspension, but when you get it right, you'll know. Seat gets buzzed if you lower it to much.
Similar Products Used:Rocky Mountain RM 9 and RM 7, Intense M1, Santa Cruz Super 8, Norco VPS Team DH
Bike Setup:I built it with a Manitou Dorado, Full XTR and a Durace Rear derailleur and cog, MRP, 321 Rims and lots of other light parts. this bike weights 37 pounds!
Bottom Line:This bike is the best bike I have ridin to date. The bike dirt jumps like no other and rails every turn like a freight train. Also Greg Minnarr and Steve Peat won the World Cup Series on it. The harder and faster you ride it the better it handles. I could say, it could be Dual Slalom raced on rougher courses. Well i am sold on this bike and will it will be hard to change my view on the Orange 222. This bike is designed for the DH racer who likes to push the limits, if you don't like pushing the bike beyond your ability this is not the bike for you. Hope this helps with your bike interests.

Any Questions just send me an e-mail, I'm open for questions.

P.S. I will write a new review when i put a 5th Element shock on the bike, they say it is supposed to make a big difference.

Favorite Trail:Old Guisecliffe course, Pateley Bridge, North Yorks
    Duration Product Used:3 months
Purchased At: - from Orange as a Leisure Lakes/Stunts! Team bike
Strengths:Race proven World Cup winning frame.
Cheapest of all World Class DH bikes.
    Exceptionally light for the strength/performance.
Simple pivot good for UK mub.
Floating pivot really tracks and sticks to the bumps.
Weaknesses:Rear facing slot in seat tube for post clamp.
Common as muck! - but not the floating brake :-)
    Huge waiting list!
Similar Products Used:Owned - Raleigh DHO, Santa Cruz Super 8
Tried - Bullit, Intense M1, Giant ATX-1, Cortina plus loads more.
Bike Setup:Matt grey floating brake version with 2002 Boxxers. 450lb spring - no compression, 12 click rebound (soft and slow!). Fast forks, stock springs, no preload.

HOPE 4 pots (mini levers), BULB hubs on Mavic D321CD. Race Face splined cranks, Real Seal DH headset, Diabulus stem (pimp flameness!), RF bars. Michy tyres, SDG Belle Air Ti saddle. XTR gears.
Bottom Line:Light, fast, cheap, simple. A race proven frame that is chuckable and fast to ride with not much to go wrong.

I dropped the shock top mount to slackne the head tube and felt the ride improved a lot. The back end 'sits in' to corners better and it feels more stable with the lower BB.

The floating caliper really does work. The back end tracks through braking bumps just the same under braking or not. Isolates braking forces and keeps it sweet. Can't wait to test it in Fort William in a fortnight or in the Alps during summer 2002.

The team riders are doing well on them. There are pictures of the bikes and riders on my dh site - www.stunts.org.uk

    Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:Solid frame with little noticable flex, very sensitive pivet with endless travel, great support/warrenty
Weaknesses:When the shock is a full compression if the saddle is slighlty too low the rear tyre scuffs the saddle
Similar Products Used:Orange MsIsle, Z1 MCR, Hope C2

Bottom Line:The best downhill bike out there. A perfect balance between strength, weight and travel.

    Bottom Line

The DH World Cup was won on one of these last season and will be won on one this season - Nuff Said

The bike just wants to be riddin fast and aggressive!! Likes to be in the air as well!! Great jumping bike!! Super light race feel to it, and stable at very fast speeds!!

    Favorite Trail:everywhere (road included)
    Duration Product Used:3 months
    Price Paid: $4900.00
Purchased At:mountain trax / tTangible cycles
Strengths:light, stiff, super plush, good adjustment, climbs well with lighter tyres
Weaknesses:comes with to light a spring for my 14 stone mass
Similar Products Used:sintesi bazooka 01, super 8, bullet, tomac 204 (all tried never owned)
Bike Setup:champange frame, 01 shiver, hope bulbs on 321's, enduro 4's, tioga cube with chubby bars. DMR chieftain mkII cranks, Blackspire chain device, XT/XTR shifter cassette/mech, Sram Pc-99 chain, titec seatpost and saddle, varous pedals, various tyre's (usally intense 2.7"). weight 45LB with my most heavy tyres and tubes.
Bottom Line:Bought this as an early birthday and it's changed my riding soo! much.
The range of adjustment is great going from super sharp for riding single track with you mates and maybe a little XC? (with way smaller tyre's than my usuall 2.7's) to way slack for those really steep run's.
The frames really beefy but not very heavy use's 2mm thick plate and tubing. Rear end travel is really sesitive due the big 32MM cartridge bearing pivots and the big swing arm and trough axle rear hub keeps thing nicely stiff. Using a 42 tooth ring means the rear end tightens up a lot under big power and also causes a bit more peddle feed back and chain stretch under commpression then when using a big ring but it makes it sprint with little in the way of bob. only comes in one size 15".
