Let us be clear...we LOVE the styling of Oakely's Juliet x-metal sunglasses.
Weaknesses:
However, with all of Oakley's high-tech sounding material, one would think their lenses would be tough as nails. Ah... no, sorry, not so.
Similar Products Used:
Julbo, 180s, RayBan
Bottom Line:
Now that we have used these Oakley Juliet for a while, here are some tips from our experience with the sunglasses:
- Always store them in the pouch when not in use
- Get a hard case if you want to carry them around in a backpack
- EXPECT to replace the lenses as they WILL get scratched
- Scan craigslist for the best prices
These Juliet X-Metal sunglasses have drool-worthy looks, but can be expensive to maintain. So go into this "relationship" with eyes open :-) Unless one carries $100 bills as pocket change, one would have to be mental to pay full prices for these sunglasses and/or lens replacements. We purchased our Oakley Juliet X-Metal on Craigslist for pennies on the dollar. Replacement lenses are available from a variety of sources (Sunglasses shops, Internet, etc...). The least expensive we have found to date were on EBay.

Look Great. awesome with Rx lenses. Build quality is top of the line. The metal frame feels like it will never break.

Frame isn't flexible. If one's head is too big, they pinch.
The price for prescription Juliet's is over $500. This is really pushing it, but you get what you pay for.

Strengths:
A very nicely designed and well crafted pair of sunglasses. They look slick and draw a lot of compliments. The glasses are solidly built, I am fond of this plasma line as they are near impossible to scratch, the frame is built near bullet proof. At first I thought these would be heavy sunglasses but was more than pleasantly surprised at how lightweight and comfortable they are. The design holds them firm, but not tight or uncomfortable on the head, these are one of the few sunglasses that I have owned that leaves no dents on my nose after I take them off. The ice polarized lense is far superior to many polarized lenses I have tried, and the hydrophobic lense coating works amazingly well at not only repelling sweat and water, but dust. The lightweight lenses are the perfect compliment to these durable frames.
Weaknesses:
I have read the reviews about how easy the lenses scratch and I was debating whether to purchase these glasses based on that information. However, I have owned these for six months, wear them extensively, and have not a single scratch. Use the microfiber bag to clean them after you rinse them off with water and you will have no problems. What's the big deal, how hard is that? Don't complain about scratches if you clean them with dust on the lenses and wipe them with your dirty sleeves. There are no weaknesses to these lenses except what the user imposes on them.

These are great glasses if they fit your style and needs. Try a pair on first before you make the purchase, and see if they are right for you. They work great for me.

Strengths:
Awesome Design, Very Strong/Durable, Price, options available.
Weaknesses:
Easy to scratch (lenses and some frame options), Oakley representatives.
Bottom Line:
Don't complain about price. At $50 (Ebay) to $400 retail for various Juliet models, the price is extremely fair for a pair of Titanium sunglasses. This is especially true when the new line of Oakley Sunglasses, the "Elite", will be priced from the low-end model around $500USD up to the top-end version at $4000+ USD (no joke).
Juliets come in various frame options: X-metal, Carbon, Plasma, Polished, Brown, TiO2, Titanium and have around two-dozen lens options available. It's true that Oakley lenses do scratch easily.. but this is because of the coating that is placed over-top of the lens to give each lens its distinct color. Rule of thumb, if you have a more vibrant lens color, it will be easier to see the imperfections from a distance. As for the frames, if you're worried about frames that scratch easily, stay away from the Brown, Polished, Carbon, Titanium/Plasma Generation 1's, and the X-metals (yes, X-metal is both a frame color choice and the family that the Juliets belong to). This pretty much leaves the Plasma and Titanium colors after the first Generation (which came out in 1998/1999) since they are more of a brushed color, not a matte color. The newer plasmas are virtually a brushed silver - which is attractive - but is the most over-produced color out there.
I've gone 11 years with 2 pairs of Juliets (I actually own over 20 now that I purchased over the last decade) and these things are durable. The only downside that many people with larger faces have is that the bridge can expand due to use, causing a "loose" feeling between the bridge and the connecting optical outlets. The other concern that many have is that the glasses have to be forced over the sides of the head instead of the arms of the glasses doing the labor. This is due to the lack of Springs in the X-metal line (with the Penny being the exception), but this "forcing" actually creates a better grip over the head, and I have yet to have a pair of juliets ever come close to falling off of my head.
Overall, the greatest glasses on the planet... and very versatile!

The Oakley Juliets are simply the best metal-framed sunglasses I have ever worn. Ive owned Raybans all my life and some Oakleys too, but this particular model, the Oakley Juliets, beats them all. Is it durable? Let me tell you what put up with: ran over by a bike, stepped on by a 220-lb man, dropped from second floor apartment patio onto concrete ground, squashed by a closing car door. Today it still bears its original shape with some scratches on its lenses and frames. If you dont call this durable I dont know what is. It's expensive, yes, but worth every dollar (or euro) spent on it.

The best sunglasses on earth for sure. The lenses are considered the best and the ergonomics is practically perfect.
Price really too high, but for this optical perfection this kind of money is acceptable.
They are really fragile (and for fragile I mean lens and eventually all frames axcept the plasma one)
I don't think they are ok for sports (or at least for the fasters one) but for the rest they are really a "eyes shade". Nothing better to protect eyes. The look is great: I think these are the last remaining "real" sunglasses by oakley. Their product now are really different (the luxottica bought will bring bad things in my point of view)
At the moment I have two of them: Plasma with ICE iridium and X metal with emerald lenses.
Going to buy also the carbon edition but this time going to try a polarized lens.

Hard core strengths. I get hit in the face a lot by patients in the fire service. I had half-jackets for the longest time, but got tired of them breaking on my face with any hard contact. Got the Juliets, now I just get bruises from them being pushed into my face!
I've worn the same pair of Juliets for over 5 years and except for the occasional nose bomb loss and the way they tear through croakies, they've held up great!
Weaknesses:
The price was not too bad since there are websites that sell cheap if you are a verifiable medic, firefighter, sheriff, cop or soldier. If not for that, I couldn't buy them!
The lenses scratch far too easily. When you're concentating on the job the "static" isn't too bad, but at other times....
If you have them, keep them around your neck or locked up!!! A few of our guys have had them lifted, once right out of an engine. They hold up to intense heat, so just put them in your turnouts. (NOT next to a tool!).

For this ridiculous price(even at retail)i expect that the coating or the frame would be less prone to scratches or discolouration but alas it is not. Also, due to the mass productions, the quality of the frame are not up to expectation.Although claimed to be sort of indestructable Xmetal, the nose bridge area is quite fragile,if u accidentally stretch the ear stem apart, they stressed alot the joint on the nose piece. And where the hell is the oakley metal O on any parts of the sunglasses????Noone knows that its juliet unless that person is an oakley freak!!!!

As a woman, OK, they look cool when I'm riding and doing my other extreme sports but looks-wise they just don't cut it for the day job and I'm too scared of being mugged or having them pinched off my head when I'm in public. I now don't get the wear out of them that I should, especially at that price. These are one of a kind sunglasses. Very high quality and will take a beating (minus the actual lenses). I originally had a pair of Juliets with Rx Fire lenses back in 2003 and lost them at the beach of all places in 2004. I cried. They were so expensive ($550!!!!!) having them with Rx lenses. I found someone on the bay selling another pair for $110 so I bid and won. They were pretty much like new so I sent them to Oakley to get Rx Black Iriduim lenses. Got it back within 10 days and was happy to see that Oakley changed out all the screws, put new nosebombs on, new ear socks, and adjusted the tension on the stems and flex coupler. The frames can stand a lot of abuse! But the actual coating on the xMetal wears right off at the high points where anything rubs or touches. I fell off my bike one time and hit the ground hard and glasses went flying hitting rocks and everything. After the crash i looked at the glasses. Lenses got scratched bad. Frame chipped here and there (nothing serious). Tried to get Oakley to replace lenses but they would not do it under warranty. So I dealed with it. After a year with these things I am hooked. The frames show wear but they are still very strong and tight. Lenses scratched but works fine. At this time I'm considering replacing them again. Brand new these things are WAAAAAAAAY overpriced. Very expensive if you need them Rx'ed. But these are an investment. You gotta take care of them. These are one of a kind sunglasses. If you can afford them get them and treat them like a king. you do get what you pay for. mine look well used up but i mean the frames are still so strong and tight no other frame could do this. Bottom Line:
This is a follow-up of an earlier review. I've been wearing these sunglasses for a little over three years now. I still think they're great sunglasses. Lenses are still sharp; and despite being dropped more than a couple times from about head height (I'm a clumsy 6'2") to asphalt directly on the lenses, there are only minor scratches.
I had been thinking about getting some lighter, plastic framed sunglasses (either the Half-Jackets or Racing Jackets) recently, but that all changed after falling on my head after a pretty bad endo. I broke my helmet, seat, and seatpost, but walked away with very minor cuts. I'm quite positive that plastic framed sunglasses would have broke and would not have provided the same level of protection the Juliets gave. I feel that the Juliets provide very good protection for your eyes. Great sunglasses.

I was amazed by how strong these glasses are. They day i recieved them (£155.50, eBay.co.uk) i sat on them whilst getting into the car, yet i heard no crack/crunch/smash etc. I lifted them from beneath my backside only to find them in perfect working order. i have done this multiple times and yet they have not changed one little bit.
When you buy theses they come with spare nosebombs and some other things simular (i dont know what they are called). you place these 'bits' by the hinge frame. the default ones have a '15' written on them, and the spares had a '25' on them. i changed them round and only then did i realsise what they were for. it restricts how far the hinge can bend outwards, thus, giving a better grip for those with smaller heads.
when i took them out of the box, i imediately felt how heavy they were (for sunglasses). however when i put them on i could hardly feel them, the weight seemed to just vanish. they feel perfectly natural and when you put some other sunglasses on (other than juliets), you think that they feel really bad and you end up wanting to put the juliets back on.
when wearing them you dont notice the frames around the lenses and it feels like you are not wearing glasses atall. the optical clarity is outstanding compared to other glasses.
I think there is definately a 'cool' fator about these. ive worn them round town, and in England, believe me, not many people own these. You see heads turn when you walk past and you feel a great sense of pride for owning such a masterpiece.
Weaknesses:
As many of you know, prices in england are alot more expensive than america. Where you would pay $100 for something, we would pay £100 (about $185) for the same thing. I would have to say that the biggest weakness for these glasses is the price. I dished out alot of money for my pair and many of you that live in America would think that i was crazy to dish out soo much for a pair of sunglasses (i am only 16, so $286 is ALOT for me).
I thing the optical clarity of the lenses are brilliant but i do feel i picked out the wrong colour. i am a VERY big fan of fire, reflective lenses but on these they just didnt look so great. I recently bought some reflective ice lenses and these look a whole load better than the fire. then again, that is only my opinion.
Similar Products Used:

Bottom Line:
If you have the money to spend then i would highly recomend buying these sunglasses. however i do this that paying more than £150 (about $275) is too much for these. Also, i recommend that you look before you buy, all shops will be obliged to help you out. Ask to have a look at different colour lenses, again, i highly recomend the ice irradium lenses with a plasma frame (my current 'set-up').
There is some confusion on these reviews about the glasses tom cruise wears in Mission Impossible 2. HE DOES NOT WEAR OAKLEY JULIET SUNGLASSES. He wears oakley romeo sunglasses, do not get them confused.
I hope my review has helped you decided whether or not you are going to get these. But like many have said, you get what you pay for.

These are THE best sunglasses I've purchased. I've worn Oakleys for over 10 years and these are by far the best I've worn...this is my second pair of Juliets. There are rare complaints that they don't fit they're head right or they dont fit their nose correctly, but Oakley makes different gauge nose and ear socks that they will REPLACE when you purchase them for a perfect fit. I found that the Emerald lenses have the best color perception and best clarity for biking woods, though I change them out with my Fire lenses for darker environments. If you have a smaller head, purchase the Penny's, which are made for smaller faces. I forget they're even on after a couple minutes and I feel naked without them on. I also play baseball with them and they've never fallen off. Need I even mention how tight they look?

Bottom Line:
OK, these sunglasses are way, way overrated. I am not going to BS about anything, this is the truth: these sunglasses weigh too much. They are sexy, true, but when you walk you can feel them pushing down on your nose and just wearing them gives me a headache after an hour. They cost well over $250.00, and they become loose very easily. Just as a test, I stretched out the ear pieces to put pressure on the front. Two good yanks and these things were as loose as a ten cent harlot. The screws on the nose piece were not designed very well. Since these sunglasses weigh so much, if they are anything other than tight on your head they will come off your nose very easily. Not recommended for any sort of running or working out activity. Chilling suits these sunglasses well, but be sure to put them on carefully, or soon you will find yourself with a very loose fitting pair of glasses. Or Oakley will find itself with another repair job.
Please don't forget, however, that these sunglasses look damn fine. If you only plan on using them for hanging out or (as I use them for) lifeguarding, you will appreciate the style and perfect lens quality of these sunglasses.

Perfect fit for my big blockhead. Optical clarity is great. Very comfortable and not too heavy. Unobtainium (or whatever) parts are great and actually do hold when you sweat. Lens coverage is really nice too, covers the periphery well. Very edgy futuristic design, looks great. Very durable.
Weaknesses:
Expensive! Should come with at least a SoftVault in place or in addition to the cleaning sock that is supplied. Must be careful with the lenses, scratches easily.

Bottom Line:
I wasn't even considering Juliets due to the high cost, but when I tried them on at Sunglass Hut, they fit my big square skull so well that I didn't want to walk away without them. Then, I never pay full retail for anything - eBay...I got the plasma frames with Fire iridium lenses which aside from looking really good, are great to look thru. Very high optical clarity and cuts glare almost as much as my polarized Revo's. These are the best fitting most comfortable sunglasses I've ever owned. Perhaps they should be for the price!
I'm particularly surprised by the fit, since I have a wide face and they looked small from a distance. Oakley did a realy good job engineering the fit, well, at least for guys like me with blockheads.
Also, they're a beautiful pair of shades. Very good build quality, and nicely sculpted appearance. Don't pay full price tho, get a new-in-box or unworn off of eBay.

Duration Product Used:

Strengths:
Physical strength of frame Great optics
Weaknesses:
A little heavy, but not very noticable when riding Metal frame gets cold when riding in cold weather Should include case for the price
Bottom Line:
The frames seem very strong - much more so than my old e-wires (which BTW haven't broken in ~7 years of use). The gold iridium lenses truly enhance contrast, especially in bright conditions and the close fit of the frame and lenses provide ample protection from dust and little bugs.
The gold iridium lenses seem a little too dark for mid to low light conditions and the metal frames feel really cold against your face when riding in cold weather.
Also, as I mentioned in "weaknesses" I think that it's pretty weak that Oakley doesn't include a protective case for the amount of money we're paying for these.. had to shell out close to $50 (in Korea) for one..
Still overall an outstanding product.

Metal won't snap Optics are the best. Period. Pimpen good looks. Prescription Rx lenses!
Weaknesses:
Bling!Bling! When road riding the frame obscures vision when you turn your head to look behind you.
Bottom Line:
These are the best glasses I have ever owned. I am currently on my 3rd pair. 1st pair was non Rx with smoke lenses which were way to dark if you expect to wear them in low light conditions. 2nd pair was my first Rx sunglasses and I was amazed at how much better I can ride when I can see what on the ground past 20 feet. I chose the Fire lenses as they look menacing and are great in overcast conditions. 3rd pair I got was because my prescription was very outdated. My eyes are getting worse. :( So I got the same exact lenses but a different color frame. I would have sent my 2nd pair in to get fitted with new lenses but I have a great insider connection and it made sense to just buy a new pair.
Only problem I had was that the little screw holder bubble thingy on the bottom of the eye frames are kinda big. And when I turn my head around to check for oncoming traffic on the road its hard to see around it unless you wear the glasses low on your nose and peer under them. If I had to buy these glasses full price I might reconsider. But I probably would. With Rx lenses you might want to consider insuring them because they can be that expensive and valuble to you.

Bottom Line:
A really nice pair of shades! The unique looks and the Oakley name were my main reason for buying them. I got them while on vacation in Florida as I forgot to take my Ray Bans.
The clarity of the lens is unbelieveable. I got the blue as I thought the Ruby would be a bit to dark for your standard British weather (even in "summer"). I'm a bit let down that you have to buy the X-Metal case seperatley - you really don't want to risk breaking these glasses by carrying them around in the black cleaning sock thingy.
I don't know as I'd risk using them for MTBing, but I do use them on my road bike. I'll stick to the Eye Jackets for off-road - I'm not bothered if I scratch them!
Don't know if it matters, but I have seen a lot of racing drivers waering them - Juan Pablo Montoya from F1, that bloke that drives the Budweiser Stock Car....

These are the most expensive sunglasses i have purchased, they are not for cycling, great for everything else. I have the latest emerald iridium lenses and they are superior to anything else i have tried- including the limited edition ruby lenses which are too dark (thus render them suitable only for very bright days)-- this new coating is supposed to strenghten the lenses and make them more scratch resistant- gonna have to see about that in the near future... My romeos are the bomb( gold iridium lenses are amazing even in overcast conditions), but these are king of the hill for the moment-- Buy these if you can afford them, My romeos have not disappointed in 3 years, the juliets will make you smile for a long time to come..

Strengths:
These are probably the last pair of glasses I'll ever need, since they are the strongest. The quality of construction is impeccable. I've used them everywhere from work, school, home all the way to cycling and kitchen work. They are very versatile because they look great as Rx frames. The flexing arch affords a great deal of comfort. During hard physical effort, they vent moisture from the eyes quite well, because of the facial clearance.
Weaknesses:
They will feel heavy for anyone wearing them as full time Rx frames. I was already used to it because I corrected and wore my Romeo frames a year before.
The other drawbacks have more to do with the company than with the product:
(1)I couldn't understand why the Ruby edition would cost so much more, since the difference lies only in the lenses. Having said that though, I love the rich red colour or the lens. It's much darker than the fire edition, and the bluish background tint has excellent protection.
(2)I was disappointed that the Ruby colour was not offered in Rx. That prompted my decision to make them eyeglasses. In either case, I still have the original lenses, should I decide to change back or undergo laser treatment.

Bottom Line:
I've been everywhere with these glasses. I just love them that much! They are wonderful to wear full-time and for any occasion. I'm lucky to have picked up my particular pair, because very few Ruby Juliets ever circulated in Calgary. They looked awesome in the movie, and they'll look great on virtually anybody. I'm not sure if the limited edition will be around for much longer, so if you want a pair, you'll have to get there and hunt as fast as you can! Your other option is to order a black colured frame with fire lenses.
