Date Reviewed: July 28, 2008
Favorite Trail:Oak Mountian
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $175.00
Purchased At:sunglass hut Myrtle
Strengths:Close to indestructible frame, Excellent eye protection
Weaknesses:6 years and not a single weakness
Similar Products Used:walmart crap, and other random glasses from here or there
Bike Setup:Kona Coiler
Bottom Line:when i was buying these glasses the lady selling them tied the frame in a knot. Wow do that with any other pair of glasses anywhere and the will break. they have survived falls, by me dropping them or me dropping myself, thats a funny story, but another time.
They also fell out my truck window on a highway, and despite my best efforts to get to them, the got ran over and less a scratch the were no worse for the wear.
You want a great product that will last for at least 6 years now. Oakley Pro m- frames are the way to go.
you can spend $20 on some cheap glasses you will replace in a month or two or $200 that will last.

Purchased At:Oakley Store
Strengths:Clear, Low to No Distortion. Frame fits snug on cranium. The High Intensity Yellow lens does a great job in low light conditions to improve contrast and depth. Replaceable lenses.
Weaknesses:Its Oakley so its $$$
Similar Products Used:Wiley X, Oakley Gas Can, Oakley Zeros, Oakley Minutes, Oakley Ewires
Bike Setup:XC Hardtail
Bottom Line:If you ride in low light conditions, get the High Intensity Yellow lens, it works wonders. If you ride in many different conditions, you can always get a few lenses and keep them around for when you need them. The size of the lens also offers great coverage and protection. Oakley also offers vented lenses, which I want to experiment with. (Last ride, my lenses fogged up)

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $200.00
Purchased At:Golf Stor
Strengths:There Oakley's - Lenses are super clear with zero distortion
Weaknesses:Price - but you do get what you pay for.
Bike Setup:Who Cares - I use the Persimmons Lens (Clear Orange Tint)
Bottom Line:For those who complained that the lenses scratch easy - Of course they do - your in a sport that most likely will involve dirt. More over you probably using lenses that have the iridium coating. For Mtn biking, use the no coated lenses and you should not have issues with scratching. Even if you do have the coated lens, get a hard case and take care of them. I have The M-Frames with various lenses, Ewire with Iridium, Both of which I have had for 5 plus years and no scratches. Currently My Orange lens has one noticeable scratch on it, and that was when I bailed and plowed my face into the ground. The frames held up perfectly. A few years later I left them on the the of car and drove off. Other than some scuff's on the frames - good as new, even the lens were fine.
For this sport get the Orange, Yellow or clear lens. They are substantially cheaper than the coated lenses. If you ride in the woods, tined lens are useless.
Yes, every few years you will have to replace the rubber stuff, but even that is no big deal.

Date Reviewed: April 24, 2007
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $90.00
Purchased At:store
Strengths:light, stylish, many lens and frame color options
Weaknesses:light, cheap feel. Lenses easily scratched, replacement parts expensive. Obscene prices for the glasses and the replacement lenses. Warranty covers just about nothing. Absolutely not protective benefit in case of accident (they will be the first things that fly off your face). Non-areated lenses have a strong tendency to fog, and build up puddles of sweat along the lower lense edge, which dry into murky smudges.
Similar Products Used:All Oakleys, Serengetis, Nikes, Carreras, Panoptyx, Nikon, etc.
Bike Setup:several carbon bikes, including Trek STP 400, Giant MCM Team and Limited
Bottom Line:Why would anyone waste more than $30 on these? You could buy three pair of similar or better quality sunglasses made by other folks for the price of one of these. If we collectively stop paying their obscene prices, maybe someday they will lower them to a more realistic cost as a result. They simply are no better than many other choices at half or a third their price. If you think you can buy the "cool factor" by buying a pair of Oakleys then buy them. If, however, you actually have a head on shoulders, and are capable of making reasonable quality assessments of the tools you live by, then you will look elsewhere--there are several more intelligent choices available.

Weaknesses:pretty expensive, hard to change to lenses

Bottom Line:Ive read some reviews of ppl having cracks on the frame but that hasnt happend to me. I really like the glasses even though they are expensive. I have a flat nose (typical for many asians) so it is pretty difficult to find glasses that dont slide off especially in riding position. But these m frame fit great! I never have to push my glasses up anymore. They are also very light and comfortable so sometimes i even forget im wearing them.

Price Paid: $170.00
Purchased At:Mall
Strengths:-> Light weight
-> Confortable
-> Hi Quality lenses
Weaknesses:-> Hi Priced
-> The paint on the logo wears off easily;
-> Depending on weather conditions lenses do fog;
-> After years of sun exposure, earsocks and all silicone rubber rips and shatters;
-> When exposed to excessive heat, tint wears off easily on Red Iridum lenses, and it blurs the view when wearing them. they're just more expensive. It's not worth.

Bottom Line:I've been using a Pro M Frame for almost 8 years.
It's a green Pro M Frame, strike gold iridium lenses.

They're great for sports, and I recommend it besides the age effects.

If you have the care, they're a very fine sunglass. For having the care, I mean if you don't let it fall on the ground and don't let it exposed to sunlight or excessive heat (let it inside of a car for hours under the sun).

Good M Frame Shopping.

Bottom Line:I love the fit of these glasses! They are perfect for sports. I was out for a ride today and the sweat was literally dripping off my face. Any other glasses I've tried would have been fogging up and falling off my face - but not the Oakleys! They stay where you put them - and even though I think they are overpriced - I'm still glad I put out the cash - cause I don't think I'd fing a better pair for less money.

Strengths:Fit... not true for everyone. 3rd best optical clarity out there. Protection.
Weaknesses:Pricey, but worth the money if you want the best.
Similar Products Used:Tsunami by Gargoyle, Via Veneto and Argosy by Serengeti, Slitty by Revo, Half Jackets and M Frames by Oakley.
Bike Setup:Trek 8500
Bottom Line:If they fit your face and you are willing to put out the money for them go for it, you will not be sorry. They are the clearest sports lenses out there... Serengeti and Revo sunglesses and clearer and have slighty less distortion but they are real glass thus you would have to be out of your mind to wear them while mountain biking. I am actually on my second pair of M frames... I had a pretty bad crash while training on the road and went face first into the tarmac. The lense and frame were severly scratched from being scraped across the ashpalt for a couple feet but they were intact and so were my eyes. I highly recommend these sunglasses.

Strengths:Regarding Oakley Splice:
Great UV protection, great fit, awesome styling
Weaknesses:Because the fit is so snug, they tend to fog. This is easily remedied by pulling them away from my face. The big problem is that, after 1.5 months of use, the paint is already chipping/eroding away near the nosepiece where my left eyebrow makes contact with the frames. The chipping is making its way to the top of the frame. I am really surprised at how quickly this occurred, especially because I've been so gentle with them. The warranty is good--I'm covered for 12 months--but I had to beg Oakley to send me a manufacturer's return label (which would pay for my having to ship the product to Foothill Ranch, CA).
Bottom Line:My experience with this product has been a counterexample of the old adage, "You get what you pay for." I've never had this sort of problem, or any problem, with the $30-or-less sunglasses I've bought.

Weaknesses:Replacing lens not so easy, lens scratches easily
Similar Products Used:Oakley X Metal XX

Bottom Line:Eventhough I could replace the lens, I decided not to do so. That's because the grey lens it came with still allows me to see pretty well in shady portions of my favorite trails. I also invested in an M Frame Soft Vault to help ensure the easy-to-scratch lens remains as good as new. Overall, it's outstanding for use either on the trails or on the road.

Favorite Trail:Tyler State Park; C&D loops
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $125.00
Purchased At:East Texas Eye Associates, Lufkin, TX
Strengths:Clarity of vision is excellent.
Highest degree of eye protection of any other wrap-around style out there (sweep lens).
Comfort is unsurpassed - you forget you have them on!
I've never had a problem with this product performing as intended.
Frame allows you to swap out lenses - I have Red Iridium, Amber, Yellow, and Clear for different conditions.
Weaknesses:Everybody out there has a pair. Lots of knock offs, too = "Foakleys"
Similar Products Used:Smith; Ray Bans; Nike Killer Loops. Those are all crap. I have several other styles of Oakleys, and love them all.
Bike Setup:Irrelevant, but trek hardtail with many tweaks.
Bottom Line:I am now on my 4th pair of M-Frames, and when these get trashed or lost I'll buy another pair! These are the best sun shades for athletes I've ever worn. I've run USA Track & Field in them, up to marathons. I've worn them in adventure races, snow skiing (I like them better than goggles), fishing trips, golfing, whatever out-doors activity comes up and they are great for everything. One pair bit the dust when I was playing softball, and a dude came rumblin' into 2nd base and did and Albert Bell "elbow to my forehead" move. Broke the frame into 2 pieces, but the lense was still okay. These things are great. Go buy a pair, you won't regret it.

Strengths:Slim, no insert
Weaknesses:weak, fragile, and Oakley's customer service is going downhill
Similar Products Used:Oakley Mars
Bike Setup:Titus Racer X
Bottom Line:I have had these glasses a long time, although they haven't really received a lot of use...the first pair developed cracks around the hinge, and were replaced under warranty. Last pair broke on the shield where it is thin, Oakley can't fix it now, even after they told me they could and to ship them off...worse, and shocking, I got them sent back to me in a box with no peanuts, bubble wrap, or anything...shake the box, and those were my glasses shaking around, all by their lonesome. Quite frankly, I still can't believe it. A call to Oakley, and they can't fix 'em, and can't do anything for me.

Truth is I love Oakley, probably the best product out there, but not very durable, and when you are spending huge amounts of money on prescription sunglasses, you need quality and a company that will repair anything that brakes...I've spent over $2000 on prescription sunglasses, and I think I've decided to try somebody else.

Strengths:The lenses are of excellent quality. But... (see below).
Weaknesses:I've owned two pair of Oakley M Frame Heater sunglasses. One of the frames developed hairline cracks on the above-the-eyebrows bar which ultimately failed (broke in half). The other frame became deformed at both temple hinges until the frame was so loose it was unservicible. I owned the former pair of sunglasses for more than a year (not too much longer). The latter pair I had for about 6 months. I threw both frames away (in disgust). I didn't send in warranty registration for either. As mentioned above in "Strengths", the four lenses that I have are in nearly perfect condition.
Bottom Line:I'm looking for a replacement M Frame. (But it seems that only lenses are replaceable.) In the meantime, I'm wearing a pair of cheap sunglasses ($15) that have remained in good riding shape for 4 months.

I had just bought some new ones and they were not broken but...they are evan greater than the other ones because they only have about 15 scrachs on each lens! And the lens are Irridium Lens!! I can't believe how the Oakley business is going to keep up with Foakleys or any types of replica oakleys. I love you Foakley!!
Weaknesses:The only weekness I saw about them was that when you where them the lens kept on popping out, and so i had to put it back in.
Similar Products Used:I bought some real Oakleys once and they wern't the same. Thereal ones are actually some sort of medal!! Can you believe that!? I couldn't. So I got my refund my full refund and I liked the style of the sunglass's but the real oakleys were to medally. So i looked on a website and I found the same sunglass's, but for a cheaper price!! Man, it was a deal.
Bike Setup:My bike is a replica/reproduction of a Mongoose A-15 3000.
Bottom Line:The Bottom line is that replica oakleys are way better than the real Product!! I can't believe all of you for buying real authentic sunglass's that cost $175!! seriously though, replica oakleys may be not the same as real Oakleys, but ,man, can you fool people easily. I just bought some Brand new replica Oakleys and he thought they were real. He has the same ones as I do, and he tried mine on and he thought they were real and they felt evan more comfortable than the real ones. If you are cool and you don't want to pay $175 for a brand new real pair of oakleys go to a replica oakleys web-site. If you are a nice person and dont have anything to spend your money and, and you have a lot of it, then go and waist your money on some real authentic Oakleys.

So it very often happens that I just enjoy the ride and do not realize anymore that i am wearing any eyewear at all. - Reduces pressure on bridge of nose

Weaknesses:Price, Need to buy extra lenses
Similar Products Used:Briko, Bolle, Other brands
Bike Setup:GT w/custom parts
Bottom Line:Everything people say about the M-frame is true: it is way over priced, easily scratcheable and it doesn't feel bomb-proof. However, the lens and the fit make up for most of that. The lens quality is fantastic- after a minute I forget that I have the glasses on. They have great periferal vision coverage and the lens is ohh-so clear.
Also, the fit is simly unbeatable- they stay where you put them ad they don't shift when you sweat. The clearance between them and your face is just enough to keep the sweat off them and still keep sun and wind out.
The M-frame is simply the best bike-speciic pair of sunglasses you can buy.
Now the bad part- Oakley should include at least one interchangeable lens for the price. Also, I highly recmmed getting the M-frame Soft Case- which is really a hard case designed to fit the glasses and an extra lens, very neat and very sturdy. Get Oakleys- they perform.

Strengths:Interchangable lenses with different shapes and colors for all riding conditions.
Lens optics (very clear).
Earstocks and nosespieces stick to sweat.
Weaknesses:Expensive.
Hinges become loose after 6+ years.
Similar Products Used:Cheap generic sunglasses that I got for free.
Bike Setup:Specialized M2 Stumpjumper Comp
Bottom Line:
The best thing about the M Frames is that there are many lens shapes, and colors that you can use with them to suit your riding conditions.

I also like the quality of the lenses because they are much clearer than the cheap sunglasses that I was using. They are also made of polycarbonate (aka Lexan) so they are light and shatter proof. The earstocks also keep my Oakleys on when I'm sweating so that they don't fall off. However the nose pieces don't seem to work that well, they don't really stick to my noses when I'm sweating.

I have been using the M-Frames for more than 6 years and I've never had any of my frames crack (I change my lenses frequently depending on the weather conditions). I think that maybe Oakley has decided to use cheaper plastics recently in the past few years to save some money which is why I see so many people complaining about their frames breaking.

Some of the weaknesses for the Oakleys is the prices of their lenses. Some lenses like the Iridium ones cost ~$100 Can, while other ones like the VR-28s cost only ~$60 Can. I don't think that it costs ~$100 to manufacture a piece of plastic. Another problem is that they don't sell replacement frames, so if your frames break after the 1 year warranty then you'll have to buy a new pair of sunglasses (I've never had my frames break so I don't know if they'll let you trade in your old frames for a fee if they're out of warranty).

Overall I give the M-Frames 3 chilis for value because I think that the replacement lenses are a tad too expensive ($60 is ok but $100 Can is too much).

5 chilis for performance because of their lens optics, and their interchangable lens system.

I'd recommend getting the yellow lense (I'd like to try clear to as a comparison point) for off road (in the trees) and night riding. I get 2-4 months per pair, then sent them to Oakley for replacement at $15 each. I was in the plastics business and I would guess the cost to Oakley for the frames is less than $2. So as long as they keep breaking, Oakley makes $13 each time. Does that sound like a scam to you? I believe the frames are made of crappy plastic and Oakley is simply ripping us off. I'd suggest the stockholders fire management, change to a polycarbonant (like GE's Lexan) and restore Oakley's tarnished image. Until then, find something better.

The lenses are great, though. I have three lenses for different conditions, and they kick bootie! Red Iridium for sunny, Charcoal for hazy, and amber for cloudy/rainy. All three rock for their respective weather condition!
No fogging - as long as I kept moving forward (even crawling up a climb). And, good wind deflection, too (for the downhill after the climb).

The lenses are almost as good as new, because I take good care of them ie. always put 'em back in their little baggy after use, don't drop 'em, don't use anything other than the soft bag to clean 'em and don't leave 'em in the sun! Love 'em. Would buy another pair no worries if I lost 'em! 5 hot snags off the barbie, with sauce!

Oakley M-Frames and Pro M-Frames are the ultimate in performance sunglasses. With the right lens, you'll be safe from all those nasty UV rays and looking pretty spiffy, too. Weighing in at only one ounce, I often forget I'm wearing them! I wouldn't wear anything else if my life depended on it. In fact, I own three pair.

Service: good for replacing frames free of charge (excl. shipping), bad for the time needed to return the frames (7 weeks is unacceptable for replacing a frame).
Cost: too expensive.

The frames are a little brittle though. mine have two cracks(minor) right above the nose piece (my fault). the legs are loose also. I've also had them for a year and a half and they have been to hell and back. the price is a little steep but i believe if you buy cheap, you get cheap. The m frames are a good investment if you can keep em' and not sit on them or slam them in a car door! the quality of the optics are awesome!

I love my Oakley M frames. However, I am growing tired of sending the frames back for replacement. This is my third pair and they have developed the same crack in the frame above the nose piece. It is a bummer to go without them for 4 to 6 weeks while Oakley replaces them. The shipping is adding up with this being the third time in as many years to send them back. Kudos to Oakley for replacing the frames without hassle each time. I would give them 5 peppas but they have a durability problem.

I have used them with my waverunner and mountain bike, and they have survived all my crashes and abuse. Last but not least, the awesome style, wide availability, and fit make these the best sport glasses on the market in my opinion! ***** 5 Flaming Shits

After ten years of buying umpteen pairs of inexpensive (under $40) sunglasses and always being disappointed by their poor fit, I finally broke down and got a pair of M-frames with the sweep lens last week. I can't believe how well the M-frames fit me! I am Asian and I have a low nose bridge and high cheek bones, and I always have a great deal of difficulty finding sunglasses that fit my face. The sweep lens (but not the striker or the heater lens) hugs right under the eyes and fits fine--no problem. I could have saved some money by getting Oakleys from the get-go.

My Smiths, on the otherhand, only cost me $25 on sale (try finding Oakleys on sale, it's impossible). They came with three lenses (not just one), and have taken a huge beating. I have even accidently left them in a jersey pocket and washed them, no problem. I am only giving the Oakleys two chilies until they price things better.

Oakley Pro M Frames are excellent, even though they are expensive. Especially when you purchase lenses for all round use. Other than that, the clarity and coverage of the Pro Frames are great, and I believe that they are worth the 240 Australian dollars I paid for. Got a second for $120 because it was a display model and I got a bargain. Another issue raised was the warranty. I snapped my black frame down the middle and Oakley replaced it without any hassle. The paint on my e-wires was scratched off and Oakley repainted the frame for me. Great products from Oakley with a reliable warranty. 5 chillies!

i have the pro m frames and i love them. they are lite weight and the lense quality is nothing short of amazing. they are simply the clearest lenses i have ever had. i have arnettes also and i like them too but the clarity of the lenses are not even close. when i put the glasses on i don't feel like i'm looking through a lense. there are complaints about not being able to see in the shade. my advice is to get the vr8 lense color. it isn't too bright to wear during the bright daylight hrs, and as soon as you hit a shaded single track these lenses shine. they give better contrast so you can actually pick out the better lines or see obstacles in the shade. as far as durability, i haven't had mine long enough to address that issue, but like all things, they will last longer if you take care of them and being that we are mountain bikers realize that things will break when we fall.

The first step to recovery is admitting that I have a problem.
I keep buying Oakley products. There, I said it.1992 - M frame, iridium lens, Limited Edition Hand Painted Frame - $150. Snapped in the middle, glued back together, snapped on the arm - sent back to Oakley - no warranty - bullshit excuses.
1993 - M frame, iridium lens $110 -
Snapped while skiing due to cold, lost forever on the slopes of Vail. Obviuosly no warranty.
1995 - Oakley Ski Goggles - $120
Went to wipe out snow out of goggles and with several light strokes hopelessly scratched lens. Very annoyed, discarded goggles in trash.
1995 - Eyejackets - $90
Arm broke x 3 (got replacement arms from local rep after hounding for 3 weeks)
Last time arm snapped forever lost in the bushes.
1995 - Eyejackets - $90
Stolen after 1 week. I'm not saying that this one was Oakley's fault, but I'm beginning to wonder.
1996 - More M frames - $110 - Snapped in middle. Oakley said it was neglect
1997 - M frame pro - $130 - Snapped in middle. Did however receive free replacement ....
1997 - M frame pro - free - snapped 1998. Currently in the kitchen drawer.
1998 - Square Wire $130 - Hopelessly scratched after 4 months. Oakley says replacement optics are $50.NO WAY EVER AGAIN. Go back to making BMX grips.

Oakleys are great if you have great vision and don't lose your
sunglasses all the time. I am a long time fan of Oakley products
in general.I have excellent vision, so I am sensitive to the optical quality
of sunglasses. I am sensitive to less than a 0.25 change in my
contact lens prescription. Oakleys are always the best quality
lenses around. If you don't have such sharp vision, this may
not matter to you.I love the way my Pro M's fit. What I look for in a product is
that, once I start riding, it just does what I want it to and I
don't notice it. That is what my Pro M's are like. Sometimes,
after I take a break while riding, I have to double check that
I still have them on. You can wear them in a variety of positions.
When they cloud up, I slide them forward. They will even
stay on without resting on your nose.Another think I love about Oakley is customer service. They take
great care of you as a customer. I have stomped on my frames,
dropped them, etc. Oakley always replaces and even upgrades them
for little to nothing. If the lenses get scratched, they replace them
for cheap. In the long run, they cost less to own than all but
the least expensive sunglasses. Of course, if you are always losing
sunglasses, they don't cover that, so don't buy any expensive
sunglasses. It seems that most people don't know about Oakley
customer service, since I have returned several friends' sunglasses
while getting mine taken care of. Most retailers would probably
rather sell you another pair.Another good point is they are made in the USA. In fact, they are
made right in my back yard here in Orange County, CA. I like
supporting a local business.

They rock, my old killer loop i would have to push up on my head after every bump, but with these i have no problem, the lense is light enough so that I can see when the light changes, yet dark enough that i can wear them whil driving someplace. Very cool, I plan to get some of the plain grey lenses soon, because hey I really don't care about the mirror lenses, the grey ones will suit me fine for half the price.

I was looking for a wrap around frame with good visibility. Bought the M-Frames with Black and Orange (night) Heater lenses. They WORK. Keep dust and crud out of my eyes without restricting my field of vision. On the negative side…
1. Sweat pours down from my helmet onto the insides of the lenses, which also fog up at times. On the rare occaisions when I get caught in the rain, it's downright dangerous.
2. They are UGLY, UGLY, UGLY!!! Design that calls attention to the design. UGH! I bought them for purely funtional reasons and remove them IMMEDIATELY when I stop riding. I even scraped the logos off!I've had them for 3 years without a problem except for a hairline crack I discovered recently in the frame above one eye. So I bought a second clear pair that'll be ready when the frames break for good.I'd give them 5 chilis but MUST subtract one for poor aesthetics. So, make it a 4.

These glasses perform. They will stay snugly on your face and protect your eyes from debris. They also provide sufficient protection from uv rays. I suggest a small touch of crazy glue for the nose piece and you'll be set. Also the original m-frame lenses fit perfectly on the cheap ones. For the price oakley is charging [$125.00] you can buy 4 of these. I have 3 different colors. When I say cheap ones believe me the only thing cheap is the price. I have been to the Oakley site and looked at the replacement lenes but $70.00 is a little to steep for me. I guess I will have to live with the amber lenes in the Pro M's for a long while unless I can find them cheaper somewhere else. Any ideas? Also for those looking for repalcement nose pieces they have them on the Oakley web site. Also if any one is looking for Copy Cat Oakley's there is a site on the web selling M-Frames for $30.00. I can't remember the site address right now but I am sure if you do a search for copy cat sunglasses you will come up with it sense it was in the discription.
