Strengths:Look good, very light, cartridge bearings, reliable and durable
Weaknesses:none as yet
Similar Products Used:shimano, tnt, ringle
Bike Setup:Carbon team mcm, sid race, nukeproof hubs, all ti bolts, tnt ti bb,kooka levers, precison billet brakes, use carbon post, syntace f99 stem, lp carbon bars, carbon cranks
Bottom Line:I have used these hubs since 1995 - yes 13 years and have not even touched the bearings in the rear hub since i bought them. They are long over due to be changed tho. The cartridge bearings can be changed very quickly and cheaply and then you have a new hub again. I have never had these hubs let me down once and have had people offer to buy them from me. The standard reply is "sorry not for sale- ever"
Great for light weight people like me and don't want to spend all their life on servicing their bikes.

Purchased At:Parma Cycle
Strengths:They look soooo coooool! Mine were purple. And they're super light.
Weaknesses:They break - under pretty mild conditions.
Similar Products Used:These hubs stink.
Bike Setup:Full rigid Stumpy.
Bottom Line:I know this is wayyy late, but I have to get my digs in because I couldn't believe that a company could ignore their own product so utterly.

With only X-C riding the front hub flange ripped off - and this hub was laced X-3 (almost enough to put the hub in compression). They would not back up their product. No replacements, no money back.

The rear free hub stripped out of the main body. No amount of JB Weld can fix that. They would not back up their product. No replacements, no money back.
As stated below, any cheapo LX hub will outlast these 10 to 1. They were a waste of $$$. Too bad there is no rating less than 1. Maybe 1 flaming dog turd.

I boycotted Nuke Proof.
There, I feel a little better.

Bottom Line:Guess i'm one of the lucky one, i was running 28h NukeProof hubs and killing rims over and over (downhill and hard landins...), then (4 years later)found some 32H nukeproof hubs at my local bike shop :) 100$ for both!!! i paid 250$ us for the 28H if i remember, such a long time ago...

so i slipt some DEEP V rims from (www.velocityusa.com) on the 32h hubs. with my 28h hubs a put some mavic XC 717 rims with some continental grandprix tires :D so these are my road wheels now

just one thing, the original bearing suck, just change them and your there! 40$ upgrade if u ask me...

Bottom Line:I've been riding these aluminum/carbon fiber hubs since 95'. I weigh about 185 lbs. and don't "free ride" or jump anything big. My riding is all cross country trails. The bike has always been power washed at car washes when muddy. I've knocked the bearings out once to inspect them and found nothing wrong, so they got some new grease and were reinstalled. For me, they have been totally trouble free for 7 years...

Strengths:I have the Ti Bombshells which look fantastic and havn't given me any troubles other than the shimano freehub.
Weaknesses:The shimano freehub went bad, and The little rubber seals in the spacers got eaten, little rust in axle.
Similar Products Used:Shimano STX,LX,XT etc. Magura Louse Disk hubs.

Bottom Line:I do a wide variety of riding from city loading dock drops to freeriding at ski resorts. I havn't had any problems with the hubs other than the freehub went bad after about two years. I have only had the wheelset trued once since they were built which is amazing. High praise for the rims as much as the hubs. I did replace the bearings the same time as the freehub now that I think of it but that was two years of rough treatment. My buddy and I ride alot of trials stuff too and he has the superfly's which have served him well. He shattered a bearing in the rear one but he does alot of big drops between 3-6 feet, so I'd expect it. Over all quite good hubs if you get a good set I guess.

Strengths:Light
Weaknesses:Silly carbon wrap around the barrel. Cheap Chinese bearings. Questionable machining tolerances and build.
Similar Products Used:XTR, King, Phil Wood
Bike Setup:Does it really matter?
Bottom Line:Throw out the bearings and get a set of NGK (Japanese) bearings to replace the horrific Chinese bearings these came with. Unfortunately, the Japanese bearings will set you back almost what you paid for the front hub and a significant portion of what you paid for the rear. Otherwise, have many sets available to swap. I haven't snapped the flanges off yet like one guy, but can see where the whole thing is coming apart at the seams. Get something that is forged or single piece unless you are really light weight. I have about 200 miles on the NGK bearings, but the whole hub is coming apart. If you are into durability and want to pull off wierd stunts or ride hard and aren't tiny, get some Phil Wood hubs and forget about them. After all, who cares about the weight of the hub? Phil Wood has these bearings.

Strengths:none
Weaknesses:no quality control
Similar Products Used:Shimono and Chris King
Bike Setup:Litespeed E-stay
Bottom Line:In two years I went through 3 front hubs and 4 rear hubs.
Flanges breaking off the Carbon Fiber body. Flanges breaking, Cheap bearings that would come from the Factory dry, all 7 hubs came to me with bone dry bearings. So called pressed in bearings would fall out, lateral play in the hub because the flanges were so poorly milled. When the counter sink holes were drilled in the flanges groves were cut buy the drill dragging across the flanges. Cassette bodies failing.
Nukeproof would keep sending me hubs but would not give me my money back. Just about every 3 months something on the hubs would break. What a nightmare and a lot of excuses. They sent me a case of grease lots of tiny Allen wrenches and a T-shirt that became the joke of the local bike shop, Hey there's Dave and his Nukeproof the hubs suck T-shirt. I have NukeProof hubs in my basement that in all good conscience I can't sell or give away. I haven't broken any in 3 years and expect them to last forever in the bottom of my JUNK BOX!!
I now run Chris King hubs. They have served me flawlessly for 3 years. Not one problem, none.
Stay away from Nuke Junk.

Bike Setup:fsr, xvert super, xt/517
Bottom Line:These were great hubs, lightweight and nice looking. easily serviced with the cartridge bearings. All was good until the Sea Otter Race in Monterey. My rear hub became loose. I rode out the race ( i had no choice other than to walk 10 miles back to the start line). The rear bearing cup broke that holds the hub to the freehub body...no big deal or so i thought. I have called nukeproof at least 20 times with either no answer or no return call after leaving a message. I paid way too much for these to be treated this way. Its too bad, i would have recommended these to anyone before this incident.

Strengths:Durably quality product. Everything on this hub is quality, the bearings spin perfectly the finish on the product is great. Even the machining of the part is fantastic. The hub flange holes for the spokes are countersunk on each side and both deburred. Even with any intense dh tire on the hub it spins better than any hub I,ve ever owned. Any company that can produce a extremly high quality hub that is bombproof, and lite at a fantastic is doing what other hub companies should.

Congradulations go out to Gretchen and the crew
for building hubs parts that will take everything you have and come back for more. These things are amazing
Weaknesses:None I ride Drop offs that are 8 to 10 feet high, I do urban
with loading dock drop offs,15 set stair cases, and the ocasional car tow. Rides right thru rain storms with no problems nothing gets past the bearing seals. This hub as seen winter riding at 30 degress below and it works right thru it. This hub just keeps on keepin on. I can kill it and I've tried it just comes back for more.
Similar Products Used:None I break hubs. I've broken every hub that shimano makes with the exception of the xtr . I've torn the flange rite off xt hubs. Broken the hub axle on lx and deore.
Bike Setup:Voodoo Erzulie, White Bros 4 inch Fork, intense DH tire on the back and conti leader on the front. This Bike is for stait up Free rideing it will go any where.
Bottom Line:Nuke Proof build Hubs that any one who rides for real and knows the wisdom of the wheel will won't. These things will get you were your going no matter what is thrown at it. Nukeproof Products are in a class of there own the truly live up to their name.

I respect Shimano I still have a LX rear with a slew of miles on it but lets face it, the weight is no comparison to Nuke! I like not having to repack. Bottom Line:Well, my story is that I needed nearly a whole new bike and didn't have the extra cash to splurge. So, after living in the marketplace section I came away with a pretty good set-up that I pieced together. I bought a front Sun/Ringle wheel and got an extra Sun rim for free. So I picked up a set of used Bombshells cheap, built up the rear and resold the front. So far, no problems at all. I jump and ride a good deal of technical stuff and haven't had any problems thus far. Hub has seen more than it's share of rain while on the bike rack and still rolls smooth. The freehub isn't loud like a King and I like that. Who knows what the hub went through before I got it. It works for me and Tina at NP has been helpful as well. Strengths:really good high end hub in terms of $$ and weight and strength, one of the best deals in highend aftermarket hubs-

when u get a good set they will last!!
they build up NICE xc racing wheels- if u get a good pair
Weaknesses:people have MAD problems w/ them somtimes,- occasionally- some of the older carbon ones had the shell come slightly unglued- happens-
the shimano free hub bodies blow out when u get an unlucky pair
Similar Products Used:king, hope, real, ringle, hugi, white industries, spinergy, xtr, xt, lx

*** WITHOUT A SID FORK *** my fork is 3.8 lbs of love
Bottom Line:i rode them for a year, beat the poop outa them riding rough fast rocky xc, i race expert class xc and sport DS-
mine were built up on 217's w/ dt alloy nips and WS 14-15 db spokes- i wouldnt go revos in the back bc they build up kinda flexy even w/ the 14/15's -
if u go revo's in the rear and racelace them and use spline drive nips or brass if u can for extra tension so u dont flex the rear wheel when cornering or dropping wheelies
--depends on how much u weigh, im 170 or so and ride my stuff HARD!-

nice hubs for the money compared to everyone else's hubs-
u can build them up rather cheaply into a sub 1600g wheelset that will ride fabulously

id go w/ the one piece atomboms if u can get a chance, u get a better chance of getting a good set bc there's no carbon to become unbonded-
mine were carbon and held up very nicely
id give it 4.5 for overall, but they took me to good finishes for a whole year so ill round up :)

The wheels have needed trued a total of 3X (2 rear, 1 front) so far in the six months I've had them. Not bad for a 200 pounder on wheels almost as light as X-Maxes. They spin smooth, and I've not noticed any flex.

I like 'em so far, and am very happy that down even to the hubs themselves I can easily replace parts (Spokes, nipples, bearings, cassette body etc.) I'll check back periodically an post updates.

I had a helluva time trying to tune it in when I discovered my cog wobbling side to side ever so slightly. I checked my skewer, looks good. I turned the cog in the non drive direction and it looked good, but once you turn the wheel in the drive direction it has a slight bend in the axle causing the cog to wobble and feel like there is an imbalance in the rear wheel. Thing I can't understand is that I only put about 300 miles on it. The front hub has been great thus far and the strengths I mentioned justify another chili pepper. Bottom Line:My wheel set was built by a friend for his girlfriend to race on. They were built to see how light you could go and they were traded to me, after a season of racing in muck. I found the bearings a bit worn so I replaced them, which took a trip to the local bearing shop and about $20 for the four...that's cheap! Since I have not constantly ridden under water or used sand for a lubricant, like the previous owners, I have not had any trouble with the bearings in a couple of years. I'm sure my 80 gram front carbon hub is not quite a rigid as my Super Bubba or White Tracker, which I have on my other wheel sets, but, with my AMP fork, there is no independant leg movement...and they're definitely lighter. There are no adjustments to make. You drive the old bearings out and just pop new ones in. They are very light. With rim tape in place, Mavic 360's, butted stainless spokes and the carbon version of these hubs, the front weighs 652 grams and the rear 851 grams.
I had one inquiry about my rear hub, and Nuke Proof gave me a response, immediately, by mail.

Bottom Line:I've got the Ti Bombshells and have never had any real problems. The bearings will need to be replaced periodically, particularly in the rear, but they are so cheap and easy to replace that it's no big deal at all. When my rear 217 was toast, I was able to get Nuke Proof to relace my hub to the Mustang for really cheap and they built me a killer wheel.

Cool Looks, Easily replacable sealed Bearings, Use of Shimano tested and true shimano Free hub body, well thought out design
BEST CUSTOMER SUPPORT I'VE EVER COME ACROSS!!!
Weaknesses:
The aluminum flanges on older model hubs are VERY suseptable to cracking, the FHBs tend to wear out faster due to
the way they are mounted to the rear hub. The axle ID is slightly smaller than standard, so it limits the skewers you can use (99.9% of all skewers still work)
Similar Products Used:

Bike Setup:
I used these hubs laced 3 cross, with
butted DT spokes and brass nipples on

Bottom Line:These hubs have been good/bad to me.
The bearing placement is as far out as possible, farhter out on the drive side rear than
any shimano hubs, and most other hubs. They roll smooth, and look killer. I had a set of the origional hubs (from like 1980) and they developed cracks. NO PROBLEMS. I called nuke proof, sent them in, they the shot me back a NEW PAIR OF HUBS 100% FREE! it was like a life time warranty on hubs! I have worn through bearings, but
it takes me 10 minutes, and $20 to replace ALL 4 bearings in front and rear hubs.
A solid hub, the newer models (with an actual emblum, not just a sticker in the middle) are 95% flawless. Can't go wrong. Especaily with all the close outs I've seen on nuke proof wheel sets lately.

I have had an excellent experience with my Atom Bombs, other than when i first recieved them, which was at least 3 weeks later than they should have been, courtesy of Jenson's and the UPS strike. I have had no such failures of the flanges or gears as listed below. I have ridden trials(xpert), and raced and trained XC on these hubs for the past two years without a hitch. Only recently have i had to replace the bearings in the rear hub. The one problem that I have found is that if you over-tighten the quick release, the spacers might end up pressing down on the bearings, causing drag, and an accelerated need to replace worn bearings. The people at NP are great and are always willing to help you.

To date, the new Nuke Proof's have proven to have the best combination of lightweight and durability of any RACING hub I've tried. My opinion. I can't help but think that some of the less than 5 chili reviews below were of very old/used hubs . . . . . possibly? My experience with the new hubs have shown them to be stiff, light, and incredibly smooth rolling. I originally got a set of Superflys built up on Mavic 217s. Damn sweet ride. Felt like a new bike. 6 months, 1500 miles later, I heard a creak, creak when I really stomped on it. Turns out the bonding of the center piece of the rear hub was not as it should have been. Talked to Nuke Proof, replaced it free. Even offered to re-lace it for me. Darn nice people those Nuke Proof folks. Anyway, today I noticed that the axle is bent, after 1 year, 2500 miles. Not too bad for the price, I never had to maintain them (loved those sealed jobbers), and I don't think I've ever had a rear axle stay straight for 2500 miles. Through all my training and 10+ races, they never fell apart, locked up, missed a tooth(on the freewheel). Nope, never could count on these to make me DNF, even if I prayed to during a few races. I ride them laced up 3 cross, 14 gage straight, on CR18's. Hardly ever touched em. Damn nice hubs. Minus one chile for the one race I had to go back to STX-RC while the bonding was being redone.

Just wanted to put out a review on the Nuke Proof Ti Bombshells after having used them for about a year. I purchased the Ti Bombshells laced with Ti spokes to on Mavic 517 rims. I have to admit that I was a bit leary of such a light wheelset because I weigh about 170 and race and train quite a bit. Anyway, I raced them in the sport class all season, (11 races) and trained with them at least as much offroad as on and the only issue I've had is to touch true the rear wheel once, (you know how occasionally you come up short on a bunny hop). This is a great product which is lighter than the Crossmax benchmark and a lot less money. I fully recommend them to anyone. By the way, light wheels make a HUGE difference in your ride.

Something's gotta give..... Light weight hubs require maintainance. In the case of Nukeproof hubs you've gotta change the bearings... alot. You can't get much lighter hubs, and if you're building a light, cross country race bike these are just the right thing. BUT, it comes at a price. Some would argue that the weight savings in such an important mechanical component is not your best gram counting excersize, and that tires and tubes of the feathery like would do more for excelleration. If you've already done that (and drilled out every unneccesary bit of dead weight carried. Like those boat anchors they call cogsets, and that space on the waterbottle cage between the bolts. It's O.K. to admit that you just might have a problem ) light hubs can save weight. Replacing the bearings is easy, and the new ones you put in can be seveal grades higher if you get the right ones. If you feel ANY play, replace!!!! doing so right away can save you from Woes and misery (like axle replacement). Just understand that weight savings does have it's price. Good Hubs!!!

Of course I baby these hubs. I don't take them apart but I make sure they are cleaned off after every ride. These wheels have bombed down some of the toughest courses that NORBA and other promoters can throw at them and depsite for minor truing now and again (understandable), they are, for the most part bomb-proof and trouble free.As I said in my earlier post, I think the main gripe on these hubs is from those who don't maintain their equipment. It's almost as if people say I'm spending $300 on hubs so I shouldn't have to do anything. That's even more reason to take care of them. Also, how many people who have had problems bought their hubs USED??? AH HA!!!I'll post again in another couple race seasons, or if the hubs die. Dear Readers,
I bought a wheelset with NukeProof hubs early this year and then read these reviews. I was shocked at the bad reviews and wondered if I had made a bad purchase. So I thought I would wait either a year or until the first mechanical to write this review. The mechanical came first and I have already resolved the problem.
The symptom was a tight freehub that pulled harder on the chain than the tensioner, hence throwing the slack into the chainstay area where it dangled in the frame until you started pedaling again.
So I pulled the cassette off and began exploratory surgery and found what I thought was a C-clip inside the cassette mounting area. I attempted to remove it with my tool and realized that it was a rubber o-ring that had broken. So I pried it out with a screwdriver and took it to the bike shop. They didn't have the piece and they suggested that I go to a hardware store before they ordered one. I found the exact o-ring (#14 15/16 X 3/4 X 3/32) at Home Depot in the plumbing department for $0.33.
I slid it on and greased it and everything is fine now. (It goes on tight and stretches a bit) So if you have NukeProof hubs and run into a stiff turning freehub, try this first before going to the bike shop.
As for rating these hubs, I would give them five chili's for the cool logo and light weight and the oohs and aahs you get at the races and the performance. But since they malfunctioned shortly after 200 miles, four is all I will give. I'm not sure that I could recommend them since durability is a big factor for me. I had LX hubs for three years prior to these wheels and they never failed. For me, a worry free bike is the number one priority for a satisfying ride.

I've had their front and rear bombshell hubs for almost two years now, and
my experience has been bitter/sweet. First off, I do ride a lot, race, and
I'm no prancing angel on my bikes. About a week after I built the wheels, the
rear started making weird noises, and the FreeHub Body wobbled.
It turned out that the FHB was really messed up (it was a shimano LX) and needed to be replaced. I bought these hubs at a shop I don't deal with much, because they gave them to me cheap. That LBS never sent them off, but after I personaly called nuke proof, I had a **NEW** FHB, axle spacers and TI axle in my scronny hands by the end of the week. The design of the hubs makes sence because the
sealed bearings aren't side loaded, like some high end hubs--> so they last
longer. Also, I prefer sealed bearings, to roller. I've seen XTR hubs become
pitted and end up in the garbage. When a sealed bearing goes, I'm out $5 and
5 minutes to put new ones in. The front hub is developing cracks on the flange, which I'm not pleased about, and nuke proof said that's to be expected from an an older hub. That disturbs me. Cracks on anything should not be expected
I don't care if it's a bike hub, or a train bridge, a stress crack is bad.
I like the design, and it's obvious some thought went into them, they are
simple and sturdy, but the execution of them is pretty poor.
I can't see why they spec an LX FHB on a $200 hub. If I wanted LX, it's buy
LX for $40. Come on guys, at least XT. The jump in quality from LX to XT is
VERY substantial. I eventualy put an XT FHB on the rear (after the third LX
went) and have had NO problems aside from regular bearing wear, and those ever growing cracks on the front >:(
Good hubs, but some improvments are needed in quality control before I can give 5 chilis.

I rode Nuke Proofs for 2 years. Still using my rear hub, but the front hub is long gone. I use a 3 travel fork that i guess put too much on the hub (especially doing dual slalom). After a while I noticed my rim was moving enough to hit my brakes when I was sprinting. I spent a few days inspecting my fork and tightening everything. I took it to a bike shop several times and finally someone found a crack on the flange that's pressed onto the hub body. The crack was so small you could barely see it but caused problems under stress. Since then I had a new wheel built on a Ringle hub (much better).

I have ridden on a pair of Bombshell hubs for about a year. I had a little problem with bearing wear but solved that by taking a trip down to my local bearing distributor. The replacement bearings you buy from nuke will last awhile but for five bucks a bearing I got a bearing that is of a much higher quality and has been running smooth and slack free due to it's higher quality. Also on my rear hub the flange seperated from the carbon body. I called nuke and even though it was out of warrenty they still allowed me to send it back and have it repaired free of cost. I guess only time will tell if it will hold together. Overall it's a good hub and the customer support is superb. Just be sure to send only your hub back minus your rim and spokes. This will decrease turnaroud time on your repair since they won't have to take apart and rebuild your wheel.

Nuke Proof hubs have proven to be a very poor purchase decision. I have
experienced failures in four of these hubs (2 front and 2 rears). Nuke Proof
did warranty the first set, but the turnaround time was five months. I have
experienced problems with the bearings, freewheel-hub interface and
complete failure of the flanges. If you do own these hubs, check the flanges
after each ride. I can personally attest to the danger of loosing your front hub
at speed. Look elsewhere for a durable and safe hub!

Now I tell people that ask about them at the shop I work at not to bother. Before I rode the bike, I got notice that the cassette body was bad. I'm not even sure they used a Shimano body. If your a hub manufacturer too lazy to make your own cassette body, at least use a real Shimano one. Of course the repair kit they sent me didn't correct the problem either. I know two other guys that had those hubs too and they both blew the flanges off the front hub, not good. If you wnat new hubs, don't get the hubs that have nothing going for them but a cool name.

I can't understand, however, why they stopped making them in the first place. I've been running them for 4 years now without even changing the bearings! They still run smoothly after 3000 miles of offroad abuse!! I have the 28 hole version and it's been laced 3 times now and it looks like it'll be going for another few thousand miles. I can't say enough about the front hub. Very reliable, extremely light, aesthetically great, and very stiff. This will be the last front hub I'll ever need to buy. I've gone through 5 bikes and countless components in the last 4 years, but this is the one thing that has gone on every bike I've had. Kudos to Nuke Proof for a nukeproof product.

So I will give the bombshell with gold symbol a 3(and none of my other earlier hubs-I still say they suck (1/5)), and customer service a 4.5 because they have been helpful and replaced an old 7spd with and 8spd bombshell long after the warranty expired(but charged $75) I'll give the hubs a 5 when they use an lighter XTR cassette that cogs will fit properly on, spacers that aren't so wimpy and will stay in place, and a harder axel material

I have their carbon hubs and have had many problems with them - loose bearins, tight bearings, loose spacers, gritty freehub - all the same problems people have stated below. I give them one pepper. Even though Nuke Proof offered solutions and with constant adjustment they perform correctly - THESE ARE $300.00 HUBS! They should be perfect out of the box. Campy and Shimano make hubs less than half the price and they perform properly. Even if they didn't, I can excuse a problem with a $50.00, but I paid $300.00 not just for looks and lightness. You shouldn't have to call the company for solutions or have to read negative review after negative review to get the hint that you may not get the 5 pepper hubset, you may get the 1 pepper hubset sitting next to it on the shelve like I did.

I built up a pair of wheels utilizing the Nuke Proof hubs(bombshells) with Sun's new, yet to be released 0 degree Lite Rims. All I can say, is I achieved my goal of building a light wheel set. I have used them in racing, and love them. They are light, and offer almost no rolling resistence. The are strong, yet fast. A combination that is often hard to achieve. The story about the difficult servicing due to the tiny Allen bolts on the axle is not true. Just go to an automotive store and tey'll get you one that fits. Once you get inside, they are simple to maintain. The complaints about the bearings getting shot quickly has not happened to me. But then again, I service them after every race. Clean them, Lube them, take care of them, and they'll give you no problems. If you want a wheel that you don't have to take care of, then save your money and buy some cheap LX hubs. That way, when they don't last very long, due to your not maintaining them, you won't complain about wasting your money.
If and when the bearings do go out, I've seen sets of bearings for the NP's going for as low as $29.95. That really isn't expensive for a hub of this caliber.
I love these hubs for their reliability, and the noticeable weight loss on the bike. It is easier to get the bike uphill, and much faster coming down. I have to say that NukeProofs are the best I have ever used.

they are exposed directly to the elements. I have had to repack them only once, however, and it was very easy to do. Hint, repack with waterproof Phill Wood grease, it has lasted all summer. Also, strap the hubs to some Mavic 217 Ceramic rims...very cool!!!!.From what I've heard, most of the durability problems have come with older Nuke's. The spacers do loosen up and do have too small of allen bolt in it but nothing a little locktite and a GOOD allen wrench wont fix. I am a light rider (155 lbs) but I have noticed that I constantly run up on my buddies on downhills. Seems that these things may have lower rolling resistance than some hubs.
