They are great if you want to combine cleats with walking. Commuting, touring or just getting groceries would be the ideal use for these shoes.
Compared to a traditional mtb shoe, they are much too wide and flexy. Because they are so wide, the cleat cutout is toward the inside of the sole, not the center. The uppers don't cinch down enough, and the suede upper takes forever to dry out when wet. It is also very hard to clean the uppers if you get them muddy. The cleat cut out is small, but it can be opened up rather easily. However, I have yet to experience any durability items on these shoes and I have used them hard over a years time.
I have since started using a Diadora Jalapenos as my mtb shoe but occasionally still wear the Nikes when pulling around a Burley and the baby inside. Overall, a good shoe for thier intended use. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Padded ankles.
Wide, stable sole for walking.

Had too enlarge cleat cutouts to work with clipless pedals. | | Similar Products Used: | Jalapenos, Yuhas. | | Bike Setup: | Fat and plush | | Bottom Line: | I bought these because I needed some shoes for those trail rides where I know I'll be hiking as much as biking, especially stream crossings replete with slippery moss covered rocks. These shoes are great for that, but they do cause my feet to go numb on long rides because they flex when pedaling hard. The lack of straps doesn't bother me. I had to relieve the cleat cutouts in order to get these soles, with their deep and gnarly treads, to work with Shimano pedals.
About the sizing--picture this: The boardroom of a major athletic shoe manufacturer, where there is a young marketing genius speaking to the directors: "My idea is that no matter what kind of shoe the customer buys from us, running or tennis or biking or whatever, he knows that if he wears a 9 and a half tennis shoe, he'd still wear a 9 and a half hiking shoe, and a 9 and a half jogging shoe. Let's end the practice of different lasts for different genre shoes, let's standardize our sizing so the customers can depend on us!" The Board Chairman replies: "Why the heck should we do that! We got Michael and Tiger! Who cares about our shoes and how they fit!"
Do not even think of buying any Nike cycling shoes without trying them on, I have to go up at least two sizes to get any of them to fit, they're way narrower than their hiking or running cousins.

98 Stumpy full XT with 85mm Englund Air/Judy front and USE XCR seatpost, 747 pedals | | Bottom Line: | I like 'em. It took a little while to get used to the cleat being at the ball of my foot instead of the center of the sole but no big deal. They are invaluable on those journeys where you have to hike-a-bike or resort to leaving your bike and walking the last few miles, especially on steep, loose, rocky terrain. I will trade the weight/lace issue for the all around usefulness of these shoes any day. When these wear out I won't hesitate to buy another pair. | Overall Rating: |
