Favorite Trail:just get out and ride...
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $9.99
Purchased At:Barnes & Nobles, Borders...
Strengths:GREAT mag. Great product reviews etc, GREAT DIY (how too's)... I look forward to ever issue...
Weaknesses:$9.99 ea. for over the sea readers...
Similar Products Used:Dirt, and Decline magazines...
Bike Setup:2004 Specialized Big Hit; 2007 Specialized P2 cr-mo; 2002 Specialized Rockhopper...
Bottom Line:GREAT mag. This is for FR/DH/DJ. This magazine is geared to the Freerider; Downhiller; Dirt Jumper. XC rides can get some great tips on how to ride steep trails, how to handle fast, off negative corners, how to setup your bike, etc... How many XC riders do you see getting any kind of air??? Not many. I do a little XC riding myself. But it's not really geared for the up tight, Lycra wearing XC riders... For XC, get What MTB, or???

Can't We All Just Get A Long??? :)

Date Reviewed: April 25, 2004
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $6.00
Purchased At:WH Smiths
Strengths:Workshop section is usually good.
Weaknesses:Some sections are pure filler (does anyone need to learn how to cook lasagne from a bike mag?).
Similar Products Used:What MTB, MBR, Singletrack magazine
Bike Setup:Spesh Enduro
Bottom Line:I'm not sure what happened to MBUK - five or six years ago it used to be great; easily the best mountain biking magazine around at the time. I got back into biking again last year and started reading it again, and it's rubbish.

It quite often reads like a bunch of students writing a magazine for their own amusement.

There are some good articles, but they feel like they've been shoved in to pad out the magazine rather than written as a big feature by one of the editorial staff.

Some issues you can squarely divide the magazine in two and say which bits were written by the same people who also write for What MTB (and are consequently worth reading), and which were written by the MBUK lot pissed down the pub at lunchtime.

Oh, and £3.75? Way too steep, although to be fair it doesn't contain as many ads as MBR.

Favorite Trail:Dalby Forest - Red
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Purchased At:Leisure Lakes
Strengths:Got free grips with it.
You can scrape the mud off your bike with it.
Weaknesses:Jumping & drop off mag, NOT a mountain biking mag apart from the adverts.
Cost too much.
Bottom Line:Obviously not for the mountain bikers I know. What about some trails, where to go for a good ride instead of show us your T*ts pictures!! If I wanted to see that i'd buy Max Power or a proper porno mag. To top it all try getting a reply more than a couple of words from their support team. I mistakingly asked them if their subscription offer was still open and received a mail back saying "No"!! Well thanks for the info chaps, don't you want any subscribers?
I replied asking them what sort of response was that and saying that I was surprised they have any clients. Then I received one back "ok, thanks"...What the hell kind of way to run a business is that?
Anyway, won't be buying anything printed by Future Publishing ever again if I can help it.

Bottom Line:I kind of agree with the last review. The reason I bought this outragously priced mag ($7.50 USD) was because it came with a pair of free Pro-Grip brand grips. The mag was interesting in that it was from the U.K. The writing took some time to decipher and I dug the nudey pics but otherwise I'd rather read MBA or Mountain Biking. Still I got a pair of grips for half price along with the mag so I really shouldn't complain.

Don't buy for full price or you will be ripped off!

Hmmm.....
Weaknesses:MBUK either aims its magazine at the pre pubescent population or purposely treat its readership like rhesus monkeys.
Similar Products Used:MBR, MBA and What Mountain Bike
Bike Setup:Orange SUB5, Psylos, Hope XC4's, Chris King, Easton, Answer yadi yadi ya
Bottom Line:MBUK are in the privilidges position of being the most well established bike magazine in the uk, meaning that they are able to get the newest products and run tests on them while their competitors are merely commenting on them. Problem is that they are too concerned with the lifestyle attatched to their chosen discipline, namely the 'daanhilla' or the dirt jumper. Its all about biggin up the celebrity biker like Warner and Peat while making sure their products are freely splashed all over the mag. Don't get me wrong though, Peat's efforts are admirable, but everything else to do with the sport suffers. All i ends up doing is hailing these people as heroes or demi gods. This is not just one issue, this happens every issue, and frankly if you are are reader with hair in your nether regions, it does get a bit boring. If you want to read about what Dave Wardell got up to on bonfire night or what Will Longden will be mostly wearing.. then this is your bag, if you want to read unbiased reviews and well written articles buy MBR or MBA and if you want dirt jumping or DH but Dirt. In short, this magazine will cater very well to todays lifestyle and celebrity obsessed readership who are more worried about whats cool and following trends than those few it seems, who simply want to what they love regardless of wether its cool or not.

This is not imo good journalism. I feel it is written for teenagers, - and was a very disapointing read, - what read? I could not find an article worth finishing.

Weaknesses:writing style. Reviews. Articles. Race coverage. Blatant corporatisim. Etc Etc
Similar Products Used:Dirt
MBR
Austrailian one
Mountain Biker
Bike Setup:Frame, wheels, transmition, forks etc
Bottom Line:what a peice of S&%T. I thought the writing style was cool when i was about 12, now, it's just gay. The reviews are occasionaly reasonable, but you can't help but notice that their team sponsors products ALWAYS seem to be the best on test (surprising, that!) (i'm sure that the scott DH bike will be "the best you can buy" this year, just as the Jamis and specialised have been). I must have read this rag for a few years and i have seen about 4 DH bikes tested, and NEVER a DH group test. EVERY month the group test is on budget bikes !BORING! who gives a s*&t if they are the most sold type of bikes? the average person reading MBUK is not going to be buying a £200 bike!! they realise you need to spend a bit more than that to go off road seriously.

The articles are totaly crap, either clearly sponsored, or just crap, like underwater bike riding?!? the wheels were zip tied to the frame for christs sake!! how is that riding?? The race coverage is non existent, the stuff that is there is packed into a page spread of s%*t race coverage or reports. The Worlds race coverage only covers Steve Peat and Will longden.

All the articles should have a 'SPONSORED BY...' thing at the bottom, just so there is no confusion.

Bottom line....
This mag doesn't make me want to go out and ride, it makes riding look cheap, cheesy, juvenile and up-for-sale. You could argue that its just a laugh, but all it does is make riding feel cheap, i don't want such a big part of my life to portrayed like that.

Buy DIRT!!!!! www.4130.com This mag is written by people who live the life, are actually at the races and seem to have a real passion for riding. It just makes me want to quit work and ride ride ride!!! Pure inspiration.

Date Reviewed: November 16, 2001
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Strengths:Useful as toliet paper if I've run out.
Weaknesses:Pretty much everything else.
Similar Products Used:Most other magazines
Bike Setup:Doesnt matter, this review is about a so-called magazine
Bottom Line:Well, like the reviewer below (Gareth), I have read this magazine on and off since the early 90s. Ive also noticed the sad demise in this magazine's quality.

It used to contain useful and informative articles, and was a genuinely interesting read.

Then it began to take a severe nose dive, and a brown nose at that! (linked to Gareth's review below).

Gone were most of the decent articles, and more and more pictures of Rob Warner's arse began appearing, as well as pictures of Britain's "finest" riders lounging around in trashed hotel rooms brinking as much beer as they could get their hands on. Quite why Rob Warner needs to do this is beyond me, but maybe he likes exposing his arse when other males are around him?! I dont know...

Anyway, I agree with the cheap porn mag image that a few other reviewers have commented about. I think the editorial team are aiming this "magazine" at teenage kids who couldnt legally buy a proper porn mag.

The magazine seems determined to promote riders to adopt a hooligan attitude. The magazine used to promote readers to take care of the places they ride (try to avoid trail abuse, such as skidding etc...), but now it seems to promote loutish behaviour, and a lack of respect for other land users. Well, either that or they feature some kids jumping, hardly what should be called mountain biking. Maybe they should call it DJUK. Seems a more appropriate title for it.

I dont find the reviews helpful anymore, and the writing style is often very childish.

I hardly ever buy this magazine any more, and when I do, it is only for the shop adverts.

Bottom Line? Used to be a good magazine; sadly not any more.

Date Reviewed: November 15, 2001
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Strengths:Mail order shops, occasionally a nice advert to look at.
Weaknesses:Over simplistic journalism, relentless brown-nosing of certain racers, rarely any articles interesting enough to read, the apparent target audience of sad, small dicked teenagers, the list could go on for quite a while...
Similar Products Used:Most other moutain bike magazines.
Bike Setup:Bullit, Jr. Ts, Race Face parts, Hope brakes...
Bottom Line:I've bought MBUK on and off since the early 90s, when it used to be a decent magazine containing interesting and useful articles and reviews. I never buy it now, as the magazine has taken a sad turn for the worse. The magazine, as so many people in this review have said, is more like a badly produced porn magazine for thick and ignorant British teenagers, who ride around the streets posing, whilst claiming to be "mountain bikers". I would imagine that most current readers have never ventured off road, and certainly never got their expensive, from rich "mummy and daddy", bikes dirty. To me, the magazine now opitomises the sorry state of "cool" Britain; foul mouthed, arrogant teenagers pretending to be bikers, whilst slagging off real cyclists, such as cross-country riders and roadies (just for the record, I am not a roadie, and I don't wear lycra).
Furthermore, the journalists for this pathetic excuse of a "mountain bike" magazine are constantly sucking up to the likes of Peat and Warner. Whilst both have produced amazing World Cup victories, please stop treating them as though they are Gods. They are both illiterate simpletons, and I certainly don't think they are worthy of role-model status. There is also a long standing, and somewhat unhealthy obsession with Jamie Tomkins. OK, so he might be good, but I for one, would rather see some other kids featured from time to time, instead of the constant, "isn't he wonderful, girls love him, etc" lines that we are fed. If girls think he's that desirable, then it doesn't say much for their standards.
Reading the magazine makes me depressed that I live in this sorry excuse of a country, Britain. There is nothing remotely cool about MBUK, the people featured in it, or even those it tries to appeal to. MBUK should reconsider it's name and loose the "MB", as there's no longer any "mountian biking" featured in this magazine. Call it DJUK (Dirt Jumping UK) or something. Oh, and one last thing; please get rid of those half naked, dog ugly, butch women like promoting so much.

Bottom line: DO NOT BUY, unless you are a sad, no-brained British teenager, under the false impression that you and your friends are "cool".

Weaknesses:Running out of materials to write? Is MBUK switching their market focus to 12 - 17 years old now ? You think that market provides you the best source of income ? If so I guess I just have to stay away from MBUK now having bought every issues of your mag for 2 yrs. You think you are cool ? Now MBUK let's be honest do you think I cannot swear as good as you in the mag ? Why don't you get some more fresh materials to write ? Your mum will be disappointed if I start swearing in your face and your dad will be disappointed you cannot swear as good as me. Wonder if your marketing team is doing what they suppose to do and if the editor(s) think attitude sells more mag ... You might as well change your mag to MBUK Downhill simple! Bottom Line:I have never missed (well one or two )an issues of MBUK & Mbr since Sept 99. But for whatever reasons ... MBUK is getting a little s**te in their last 6 issues. Their quarterly mag is very good. But I guess they are just not very creative in coming up with fresh materials to write anymore. I am not a downhiller but I do read them but if you have an overdose of downhiller all the time you will puke. Not too much mate. Get new editor(s) and fire the present ones as they are out of date mate. Cool ? My arse!

For downhillers - you've found your dream mag. You can w**K it off looking at those downhillers ... ooohhhmm ... Feeling gay ? You should be now.

For XC - sorry mate you're not welcome here they will abuse you. Go away ... this mag is not for you. MBUK is Village People mate.

For trails - eerr ... nice tricks mate. Keep it up.

Others - Go read Mbr or Mountain Biking Action ... they are more neutral and nicer to read too. Oh ya the guy with the goaty in Mbr who rides Specialized softail ... looks a bit like my mate ... I am going to kick his arse.

I still give MBUK 2 Chilis coz from now on I intend to only read them at the book store and not buy them ... so safe my money for other mags. Cheerio!

Weaknesses:Downhill downhill downhill. I like downhill, but I'm really sick of hearing how fantastic the MBUK team are at downhilling and jumping and how (coincidentally) the bikes team MBUK ride are amazing. This magazine used to be a great read, but over the last few years it's become more and more juvenille (swearing, childish reviews) and less and less useful as a source of information and adivce.

Bottom Line:Okay lets get this straight, the mag does tender to the most popular form of the sport which at the moment is freeriding, tricks and downhill, therefore it sells more copies, if this were to change to XC riding, they would write about that. It use to be good, its got worse, the only redeeming feature is the XC route maps, Mint Sauce and the fix a bike sections. If you’re 10 to 17 year old age bracket you will love it. Any older and you will want to read about something a bit more mature. It’s a great mag for teens. Not so good for anyone else. There a review of it without having to resort to swear words or petty insults.

2 chilis for the route maps and Mint Sauce which are great. But not worth buying it for.

I'm in England occassionaly - had a delay caused by fog (what else) at Birmingham airport last Friday, so I bought the Nov99 issue. It was the only MTB mag available - is this the only MTB mag from UK? I ask myself if this mag represents the Brit's attitute on MTB. I have to agree with Bikecrash. This is teenage stuff. The highlight was that gotcha/Dual Slalom thing, where the kids tried to shoot each other with colour bullets. Maybe it comes from the lack of mountains in the UK...
Very british.

Bottom Line:This is Mountain Biking for the teenage Loaded- reading generation. Whilst I enjoyed reading about mechanical tips and riding skills years ago, all this mag now concentrates on is BMX-style jumps, downhilling and how to be a poseur. The dumbing down of British magazine journalism, which is a direct effect of Loaded and FHM's popularity, has meant all mags have resorted to targeting the same male teenage market; hence the scantily clad, pig ugly bimbos on every page and the necessity to swear and use vulgarity throughout the magazine. It is exactly the same with most publications, the people with the disposable cash are young boys so give them pseudo Playboy with a few flash downhill bikes which their over indulgent parents will spoil them with. Stupid thing is that those bikes will only be ridden around the local estate, or maybe the odd traipse to the local park. The Goog Konadude prick just sums it all up really. Look at the reviews by the people raving about the magazine, glad I am now half way around the world. Good point well made S. Palmer. If the magazine raised its IQ level to the quality of its print and photos I would go back to buying it regularly.

Bottom Line:When I lived in Canada, I used to think MBUK was cool. Now that I live in England, and I see that the reason for only ever writing about trials and bike games is that there is nothing else to do here, I hate it. Jamie Hibbard is a hypocritic (he slags bikes off in 'REDLINE'), annoying little prick. This magazine is a glorified comic for underdeveloped children who are too unpopular to ride BMX, and too stupid to stay at home with paper bags over their heads. The dick from Sussex who wrote everything in capitals and went on about 'buzzing' ramblers at the end of his letter on this page only proves everything I've just written. The only part of his anatomy that has probably ever reached 40 mph is his right hand.
Please ignore the chilli underneath this review, MBUK doesn't deserve it.
P.S. Radio one isn't very good either. (the page wouldn't let me write what I think about that...)

It's full of adverts, the articles aren't worth reading and it' more expensive than other bike mags.
Similar Products Used:
Almost every other MTB mag, especially those not made by Future are a lot better.
Bottom Line:MBUK now has to rely on free gift gimics and pics of half naked women to attract their readership which seems to be made up of sex obsessed little gromits. I only wish there was a lower rating than one!

I`m a keen 17 year old trials rider and I get MBUK every month. I think that MBUK is the best thing since sliced bread. It`s bloody brilliant. I enjoy reading all the articles even though I`m only really into trials. I`ve got loads of mates who love the mag as well, so if any of those stupid fools start going on about the mag becoming too full of downhill etc. and not enough serious articles on a boring old load of b*lloks then please take no bloody notice of them, they`re missing the point completely.
P.S. Havihng said all this I would like to see a bit more about trials in the mag please.

MBUK used to be a great mag until all this downhilling/freeriding bollocks came along, which is just a marketing ploy to sell more expensive bikes anyway.
Now it is just a pile of shit, aimed at 14 and 15 year olds who get their parents to shell out shitloads on a bike, only for them to ride around the streets on it,shouting abuse at passers by like oi you f*****g wanker. All they want to do is ride around trying to do 'really cool'(yeah right)jumps like they see Rob Warner doing in MBUK.I bet their bikes never see the any mud whatsoever. This is not mountain biking, its called being a frigging ponce.

MBUK is still the best bike out there, if only for the up to date reviews etc...
The problem is that there isn't a whole lot to write about. Back when it started the whole scene was developing & the mag with it. Now it's got to te point where everything is too specialized. DH gets the spotlight b'cos the alternative (XC) would mean fitness articles, race strategy's etc.. which is very usefull but misses the point that most people just ride for fun. What you could do is prduce a magazine with sections for XC, DH & begginers. Thing is, pretty soon you cover all the basics and after 1 year you've covered race prep for all seasons - then you start repeating yourself & everyone gets bored. All you can do then is stick to the most fashionable b'cos it's all that's left. It's still a good mag if you only get it now & then.

This is the one and only mountain bike magazine worth reading in the whole world.
True, it does sometimes take the piss out of the occasional person who writes a stupid letter, but it does cater for the needs of all riders.
It is aimed at the younger genorations, some people argue. If you are not in one of the younger genorations, you shouldn't be riding, unless you're good of course, but then again, if you are good you wouldn't be buying this type of magazine.
MBUK has done wonders for my life, it introduced me to a whole new style of living and it is great.

MBUK is run by advertisers and publishers. These people do not care about MTBers. The magazine is designed for under 25's and kids with parents with deep pockets. If any competition comes out to the publishers mags [like DIRT] they respond with a copy [Rush] until their better distribution and cross advertising forces the competition off the market. We have no real mountains in England - the 'journalists' think playing in the woods is freeriding. You decide.

I think that this magazine is great, but I must admit that there are too many advertisements in it. I have been told that the only way to continue publishing the magazine is to gain extra money (hence the ads).
Not many more criticisms apart from this. It's good to know that a magazine is producing such a good quality team. I like the idea of gathering new talent, and improving it, to make them successful in the future.
The best parts of the magazine are the reviews, and the mint sauce sections.

I used to subscribe to MBUK when I lived in England but only get it here occasionally because it costs 15 bucks and whenever I visit the magazine store they're all 2 months old. I picked up Octobers issue and had to check I had the right mag. Everyone is wearing motocross gear and full face helmets! There are adverts for deodorant and now 13 different chain devices to choose from. Jeez I must be getting old. Still the usual core of interesting articles and features and Mint seems unaffected by the hype. What annoys me is the way the goalposts keep moving. Now I've finally got the type of bike I dreamed about 4-5 years ago it's old news and I'm just as far away from owning a dream machine as ever. Maybe like the Range Rover, MBUK has continued to evolve out of it's niche into an entirely new beast and I'm still back in the niche/rut wondering why the world's moving so fast.Anyway MBUK is still probably still the best MTB mag on the shelves

a) Aren't we all really clever articles (Staff and 'friends' - ie Steve Peat or Rob Warner mostly) doing something silly (mostly jumping something).
b) We love downhillers (An article worshiping some downhiller)
c) We can do stunts (some feature about wheelies endos or similar)
d) We've got a great race team (Profile of a team memeber or training session)And thats it. All great if you are 14 and think bunny hops impress girls - a waste of time if you actally ride bikes!

Is MBUK a Rob Warner fanzine? It would appear to be given the number of times he appears on the cover etc which is great for his sponsors but deprives up and coming riders a platform for PR and hence improved sponsorship deals. But on the whole not a bad magzine but you do get bored of its rules/ big air writing style but that is probably a result of its young readership age.

I love the magazine. I am one of the few female mountain bikers out there!. I don`t get to ride as much as I like, but when I do get out I let it all go!!. The only thing I don`t like about the mag is the worship of Warner, Peat, Geall and that bloody Kelly Salone, she gets up my nose. Sorry I know that they are brilliant but every article happens to feature one of them in some form or another. Has Jamies bike been recovered?. I hope so. Also I love Mint sauce, keep it up Jo. Any spare Santa Cruz frames lying about, that a lovely mtb female could make serious use of?. Oh a product review, um, Oh I know, The Klein Mantra race, lovely bike, makes a strange sound when stood on top of a windy hill. Plush and an enjoyable ride. Jumped it, crashed, say no more!!.

A superb mag, if you live in the UK, which I do obviously. Sad to see the demise of MTBPro/World, but that's the pressures of the financial side at work. Total Bike doesn't seem to have captured the spirit of it's predecessors (sorry guys, I have been a long time fan) so I have moved my subscription to MBUK, which I used to buy in any case.....wonder why I never subscribed to both???Anyway, I have had a look through the comments and reviews and find it curious that people would want to slag the mag. I mean it's pointless.....if you don't like the mag, read something else - after all, they are not doing it as a favour to you personally, so you've no right to be offended.True, the magazine has changed over the years, matured somewhat, and maybe they do try too hard to be funny at times, but what the hell....it's their job, they can do what they like. Go for it guys, you get my backing all the way.

I reckon that your magazine is definately worthbuying, although it does lack some intense downhill action. You will probably say, 'buy rush, or dirt then', but the only thing is that I do. My favorite section has to be the reviews pages, where you review all the new products, and also grime time. However, one thing which get on my nerves, must be the fact that you don't reply to any of the enquires that I have made. i.e. Grime time. This may be because Smith is living in his own little world, and concentrating extremely hard on keeping a grasp on reality, without being taken into a technological bizarre world.
