$230.00 | | Purchased At: | Dick's Sporting Goods | | Strengths: | This is a review for "MOUNTAINSMITH" The only thing good about this bike is the Rock Shock Judy. The rest of the bike should be MELTED. | | Weaknesses: | The crank is junk x 100,000. How could I have been so stupid. Got a Gary Fisher Wahoo for about $50 more and it is 10 times better. | | Similar Products Used: | Trek 4300 and Diamondback. The Trek was good should have kept it. The steering geometry is better on the Wahoo though and so is the frame geometry. | | Bike Setup: | Stcok. Hey other people said the crank was crap, but I still bought this bike. I must have been on stupid pills that day. Buying this piece of crap Mountainsmith makes me really appreciate the Gary Fisher Wahoo though. | | Bottom Line: | DO NOT BUY THIS BIKE. YOU MIGHT AS WELL BE EATING YOUR MONEY IF YOU SPEND A CENT ON THIS BIKE OR ANYTHING ELSE "MOUNTAINSMITH" MANUFACTURES. I WILL NEVER BUY ANYTHING WITH THE "MOUNTAINSMITH" NAME ON IT. THE HANDLEBARS ON THIS BIKE DON'T FEEL AS GOOD AS THE Trek or the GF EITHER. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I'm as fashion-conscious as the next girl, but I don't think a bike should be shown merely as an accessory/status symbol. | | Similar Products Used: | Too many | | Bike Setup: | A number of bikes. | | Bottom Line: | No issue of this magazine should be tossed aside lightly. $4.00 | | Purchased At: | airport | | Strengths: | Some cool pics, some cool articles. | | Weaknesses: | The REVIEWS! Even more so than other major Mtn. Bike mags, these guys are shameless at promoting/advertising for manufacturers by way of their reviews. There is no honest feedback given in their reviews they are merely advertisements for the products they are testing. I also think this mag is in cahootz with the mail order companies that are listed in the back of their mag. Did you ever notice that the products the mail order companies are promoting are often what the mags are reviewing that month? Coincedence? I think NOT! | | Similar Products Used: | Dirt Rag, Bike, Mtn. Bike Action | | Bottom Line: | If your cool with shameless promotion, and skewed feedback a.k.a. My conclusion: the mountain bike version of "Cosmopolitan." I felt cheated after going through an entire magazine so quickly because it had so few articles and they had so little substance. I was dumb enough to subscribe a few months ago because like Uncle knobby, but then they axed him. Some of the columns are decent but the articles are terrible. If you think its an unbiased and informative source of information about mountain bikes, think again. It's merely fluffed up ads with attractive models wearing all of the latest fashions. The writers appear to be the same people who are responsible for the Muzak you hear in elevators and department stores.

So much ads, the editorial contents is not very exciting, I would rather wash toilet than read the mag. I de-subscribed to this magazine months ago and even though I leaf through it at the store occasionally I see nothing in there to make me want to re-subscribe or buy a copy. This mag tries too hard to lure me with gaudy graphics - it's a visual insult. The stories and articles are too shallow - as though they are reaching for something that isn't there just to fill an issue. Sorry - it's the worst mag out there. They should leaf through Mountain Bike, Mountain Biker and Bike and try to combine all three. Then I might buy. One burning weiner. | Overall Rating: |

I've always thought this was a pretty lame-o mag except for the bike-of-the-year thing. it's nice to see that they always pick a reasonably priced bike.Otherwise, this journal is very weak. Specifically, the latest issue taunts new in '99 on the cover but only reviews Shimano's lowest end gear in the inside article (acera and alivio and crap like that - let's face it, that stuff isn't really MTB capable.)This mag also conveys a very amature-ish tone. The article language is very basic and lacks any flair like other greater mags like Dirt Rag and Bike. There doesn't seem to be any passion here. | Overall Rating: |

Ok, mybe this magazine doesnt have the most color photos, but I think they write some good things. However, for the price the magizine is far to short. Why not pay almost the same price and get a copy of Mountain Bike Action? This magazine is good, but they could spend more time on it. One good thing is they mix a LITTLE humor which makes the reading experience not quite so technical. | Overall Rating: |

Everyone is still ripping on Mountain Biking Mag. Why not write for the 30 year old crowd? Probably because more younger people ride then people in their 30's. Also, education is not what it once was in this nation, so you must write for the middle school level. Complaints about the reviews of expensive frames are also unwarranted, us thirty year olds can afford them, and with increase in the popularity of televised moutain bike events more and more high end bikes are being sold. So stop complaining about the mags and get out their and ride, the rags are publishing exactly what they should be publishing. | Overall Rating: |

This is a prime example of the Dumbing Down of America. It is sad to see a publication stoop to a middle school mentality with its articles and reviews. Why must every mountain bike magazine feel a need to review bikes and framesets that only a fraction of the population could ever afford? As nationwide population trends indicate, we are all growing older...so why not print for the 30+ year old set? | Overall Rating: |

They reported an incident where a Paul derailleur got stolen from a table at a race, and said that it was as shocking as school children gunning down their classmates.WTF?! Let's see... $300 derailleur vs. dead kids? And this was in a column called perspectives? My god... This mag is a total waste of trees. I've never known them to print any bad words about any products. For that matter, it's mostly ads anyway (it should be free). I just finished reading the most moronic writeup on a KHS montana comp that anyone could have imagined; the bike test is described in an imaginary Jeopardy game--is that their attempt at cool? It was tedious and upon finishing it I was disappointed by the lack of info. I don't think they actually test products--they just b.s. it, thinking that any idiot who would pay $4 for an issue wouldn't know the difference. Really annoying. No good info. Target audience is obviously kids. It's an insult to our intelligence. I think they reuse issues of BMX mags from the 80's and change out the names and pictures for whatever stuff the marketing guys at [insert manufacturer here] send that month. Then they plagerize an editorial from some past year's Dirt Rag, and call it an issue. | Overall Rating: |
