Bottom Line:
Got the box in the evening. Went to ride the next day. Looked great from the start. Had to stop to adjust a few minor things (brakes + loose spokes).
But that is to be expected if you pay less than $500 for it.
Went to the trail and put it through the crazy cut backs and jumps over trees and rocks. Passed the handle bars twice. Ouch!!
Have 170lbs and ride it hard. Could not see any flaws on the frame of gear. Shifting is fast and responsive to under tension (uphill) shifts.
Coat it with some WD40 at first and you will have no issue cleaning it. Get some handlebar elbows and a decent computer from eBay.
You will have the bike for a long time. Set the dart 2 on fast rebound (with turnkey included) and tighten the spring good.
Got 150 miles on the bike. NO ISSUES except a sore @#$.
If you are buying on a budget, bikesdirect.com is the source!! Feel sorry for LBS.

Bottom Line:
I bought this bike due to all the "favorable reviews" on this site and others but I now question the validity of these reviews. I read the 700 ht was "unbreakable" etc. but I've had nothing but problems from the brakes to the derailer to the front wheel bending. The fact the seat is uncomfortable is nothing compared to everything else breaking down on it. I'm only a cross country rider and do not ride it hard and have ridden just 10 to 12 times but I've replaced the front wheel and the breaks are not working properly any longer even though they are adjusted perfectly. They heat up and then do not work. It shifts by itself in the middle of a climb even though, once again, it is adjusted perfectly. It is falling apart and I barely used it!

Strengths:
Awesome components at this price range. Sturdy, beautiful bike. No complaints with the fork, but I have no reference comparison. amazing entry-level mountain bike.
Weaknesses:
30lb hardtail. front wheel spindle seemed overtightened from factory and almost grinding (which I retightened), but otherwise everything was good. one of the "generic bike" manuals that shipped with it was total waste of time.
Bike Setup:
my 2008 model has Rockshox Dart 2 w/lockout, disc brakes, Deore XT rear derailleur; only upgrade planned: spd/eggbeaters to replace platform pedals
Bottom Line:
This bike is a very high quality entry level (or mid-level) bike. It's a really beautiful bike; I love the polished metal finish. I greased it up so that everything washes right off (but be sure to keep discs degreased, of course, w/windex rag or something). The tires are awesome (aggressive horizontal bars on rear tires), and the disc brakes are way plenty. The shift system has quality components. I was presently suprised to find my Dart2 front shocks come with lockout; good for keeping the bounciness at bay on long climbs. It' not a heavy bike, but it's not light; about 30lbs for this hardtail. I look at the bike as a great trainer; I like all the components. More than 10 years ago, I had a rigid fork bike, and I was amazed how much more secure I felt going really fast with a front shock; sharp dip creekbeds that would have been practically impossible with a rigid fork are so much fun.
I plan to eventually upgrade the platform pedals (to "clipless" SPD's or eggbeaters) to have better control on fast obstacle-overs and rapid cornering, and so I don't have to hesitate joining the fastest riders. But right now I like to hop off the bike for a few hundred yards for a little crosstrain switchup occasionally (and give my dog Leo a break, if applicable), and being able to use regular shoes is probably more comfortable for that anyway. Just have to watch those sharp pedals on those shins.
My next bike would probably be the ~22lb ~$1200 Motobecane FLY9357, which will probably make some moderately competive XC very fun. Motobecane seems to make quality stuff; surprised this is not considered to have name cache; the trek or fisher at this price would have sucked crap. I did all the setup and tweaking on my own. Recommend trying to adjust the cable slack/tension before touching the derailleur screws; yours might already be tweaked pretty well from the factory.
After 5 weeks of use, I can say, the Motobecane 700HT is overall a really great bike. Hopefully, I'll remember to update my review several months from now. Tip: set brake levers at comfortable downward angle.

Bottom Line:
I purchased this bike in 2005 from ebay as a beginner to MTBing. Since then I have ridden it in AZ, CA, and South Korea. I have logged more than 1,000 miles on this bike and have hit really beat it up. My skill level has greatly increased so I have replaced most of the compenants with SRAM X.0 shifters, X.0 rear derailleur, X9 front derailleur, SRAM PG-990 cassette, and a Truvativ NOIR XC 3.3TM Carbon crankset. I also replaced the brakes with the AVID bb7's and speed dial ultimate levers. I put a new Rockshox Reba Team fork on it and replaced the seat. The next part to be replaced will be the wheels and tires but will wait a few more months. All I can say is that this bike has really stood up to some punishment. I wrecked more times than I can remember. The worst being a 20 fall off the side of a moutain. The bike stood up great and I was able to ride it out. The only part that broke was the left brake lever. I will keep the frame until I have enough money to replace it with a high quality carbon. If you are looking for a good bike to get into the sport with this one is really the best choice.

i HONEST do NOT know what these people are fussing about the deore derailers giving them problems...i am a amature with this being my first bike over $150 and i personally adjusted the front derailers so there is no noise and shifts beautifully. At first it wasn't so, it had a hard time moving to the highest gear, but all i did was adjusted the cable at the derailer and boom, no more problems...
i think even for the regular price of $450, i would have been very happy, but for $350, i feel i got an absolute steal!

The RockShox Dart2 forks are ok, if you like stiff forks then you will replace these soon. The cranks are a mystery, can't decide if I hate them or not. The stem, handlebars, brake levers, pedals, and seat post will be replaced this weekend. This is not necessarily a bad thing, just personal preferences. Have never owned a bike that I did not replace them immediately.

It arrived about 5 days later and after a little wrenching I was able to take it out for the first time. I can only say I am very pleased and feel I got one hell of a deal. Name brand components, albeit bottom of the barrel name brand components. Looks shiny. Once correctly routed and adjusted, the disk brakes work extremely well. Inexpensive entry level bike.
Weaknesses:
RockShox Judy (J2) is useless. The rear brake cable comes mis-wired through the frame (where it is attached to the frame by the handle bar), requiring rerouting of the cable around the other side of the handlebar in order for the rear brake to work correctly. The grips need to be upgraded. Everything is low quality except for the dérailleur which is XT. The Truvativ cranks work, but they are obviously the cheapest model Truvativ makes and it shows. Shifters work adequately. The bearings in the wheels are crap and I had to service them twice already.
Similar Products Used:
I mostly road bike and use this for riding in winter conditions. I swapped the knobbies for some GEAX Street Runners and the bike at least rolls now!
Bike Setup:
Added street tires, grips, bar ends, lights, and it makes for a decent cruiser, but hardly a performance bike.
Bottom Line:
I wouldn't buy this bike again had I known how bad the fork was. I think it would be acceptable if it at least had a lock-out. If you're looking to use this 5-10 times a year it is fine, otherwise look elsewhere.

It's a nice little bike. Strong aluminum frame with lifetime warranty, comfortable seat, XT derailer, shiny, looks like serious business, nice rims/tires, disc brakes, excellent cost/performance ratio, solid ass-saving construction. A pleasure to ride. Tires, seat, grips, pedals + some bar ends make for an agressive/knurled look.
Weaknesses:
Included disc brakes and RockShox are struggling. Disc brakes need to be watched closely. Not sure what to think about the crank. The frame is a bit heavy. I'm guessing the extra weight is for added strength to make the lifetime warranty economically sound. Personally, I don't mind the extra weight if it means the frame won't buckle mid landing.
