Date Reviewed: August 31, 2009
Favorite Trail:From Towny to Downey
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $1000.00
Purchased At:Performance
Strengths:Nimble,compact,confidence inspiring
Weaknesses:Heavy & Burly Freedrive system, un-helpful Mongoose support.
Similar Products Used:DBR, Santa Cruz Nomad
Bike Setup:Hayes,SRAM,Rockshox,Crank Bros,FSA,Fox Van-R
Bottom Line:Great and fun to ride. Stock components comming out of the store make this weigh in at 42-lbs - and thats a small! Freedrive system is burley - but pedals suprisingly well - in an effort to customize and make this lighter and pedal better - Mongoose customer support had nothing to help me -I inquired about the recommended shock sizes for the rear and all they could tell me was: keep the original already there. 4-chillis for value, 3-for poor support.

Favorite Trail:SART
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $1600.00
Purchased At:Performance - Escond
Strengths:Fantastic value! Versatile bike for FR/DH riding. Handles all terrain with ease. The stock tires are very well suited. I tried different tires, but went back to the stock tires.
Weaknesses:None...the parts are good, but this bike is worth upgrading to fit the needs. Look at the double and triple and see what upgrades can be done.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Hardrock Uno full suspension mt bike
Bike Setup:Stock except upgraded brakes to Hayes
Bottom Line:Killer bike! Mongoose gives a great value! The bike pedals exceptionally well for a dh/fr bike. The Freedrive suspension works quite well. It is very tuneable to personal preferences. The stock components are a great value and the bike is really worth upgrading the components. The only downside is it typically heavy because it is a very burly bike. Plus on the other hand, I have not read that the frame has any weaknesses.

Date Reviewed: August 28, 2007
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $1499.00
Purchased At:Online
Strengths:Everything! The bike is light considering how tough it is. The bike is incredibly fast on the DH, I've raced Intense M-3's that don't feel like this. I also have taken this on long and intense all-day all-mountain/freeriding rides, and it feels great doing this as well. The bike soaks up big hits without and worries, and is as nimble as a dirt jumping bike.
Weaknesses:None, I can't complain!
Similar Products Used:Intense M-3, Intense Uzzi, Foes DHS, Ellsworth moment
Bike Setup:Rock Shox Totem, Full XT drivetrain, Avid Juicy 7's, Mavic Deemax wheelset.
Bottom Line:An incredible bike! It beats bikes three times its cost. Feels great riding trails, on any DH course, and hitting any stunt I can find.

Strengths:low pedal bouce, good brakes for mechanical, chunky tyres, sweet looking, fun to ride, fast to pedal, good cranks.
Weaknesses:little on the heavy side but still alot less than other heavy duty freeriders, mechanical brakes can't handle thredbo, manitou stance fork !?!~
Similar Products Used:giant ac, giant dh team, norco sasquatch, giant stp 0, specialized hardrock disc, giant faith, kona stinky.
Bike Setup:stock apart from maxxis minions and new handgrips
Bottom Line:fun bike that will handle anthing up to 5 metres. Probably not ideal for the physco cliff droper but a bit of fun and still fast for the money. Eric carter designed it after all!!

Favorite Trail:Fox Long
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $1890.00
Purchased At:Trak Cycles
Strengths:Feels solid and well built when riding, and is easy to control well throughout riding on it.
Weaknesses:Back shock is rather stiff though can be adjusted from new spring. The frame makes a little noise as you get off your bike. Ditchwitch rims are weak.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Bighit #1
Bike Setup:Dropoff #3 150mm, Manitou Metal RP, Hayes Sole, Truvativ crankset and cockpit. Sram X7 drivetrain.
Bottom Line:An Awesome bike for the money and its looks great and once you've pimped it out like ive upgraded the rims to S-Type orange, it looks fantastic. I suggest this bike to someone who is on a budget looking for something that has looks, performance and yet good specs. If you're into Freeride and Downhilling then go ahead get yourself a good deal and trust me you'll enjoy it.

Price Paid: $1000.00
Purchased At:Local bike shop
Strengths:Good looking, Tough frame, good all round bike.
Weaknesses:When you take for one day of downhilling you: Bend the piss week axels,Wreck the front forks.
Bike Setup:Standard
Bottom Line:I love this bike and used it for everything for about 9 months but took it to a DH practice day last weekend and well, i found that the bottom bracket is to high and it doesn't corner perfectly, im 65kg but found that i couldn't get far enough back to go over drops and kept landing on my front wheel, the front forks went from bad to worse and im having to replace them, but the whole bike held up very well seing how cheap i got it for.
If your looking for a bike that will get you into anything then this is the thing but will need a bit of after market stuff to downhill.

Favorite Trail:Lynn Woods
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $1100.00
Purchased At:Internet Store
Strengths:Climbs surprisingly well, especially short, steep, technical sections. You can definitely tell that Eric Carter played a role in its design! It's super fast on nasty DH and corners like a roller coaster. The bike handles big drops and jumps exceptionally well. I keep the travel full (7.5 inches) and keep the SPV adjustment almost all the way maxed out. Oh Yea, the bike is NOT heavy like everybody else is complaining about- it weighs less than 36lbs. Quit you're moaning and get a pair!
Weaknesses:The 8 speed drivetrain is a bit weak. I'm used to a 9 speed and will be switching it over soon.
Similar Products Used:Intense M3, Giant Faith, Norco Six One
Bike Setup:2.5 WTB Timberwolf tires, all else stock for now.
Bottom Line:The 2005 Mongoose Black Diamond Single is a great DH/Freeride bike. It gives $3000 bikes a run for their money at 1/3 the price. The bike handles better than any bike I have ridden. Bottom Line: perfect for any rider who wants to hit big drops and jumps, frequent the DH course, and have a lot of fun on the trails.

Favorite Trail:A-line,Whistler
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $9050.00
Purchased At:bike lab
Strengths:the bike is quite heavy but thats not much of a problem rideing down hill, rims seam to hold out on the rocks, rear shock is nice and plush, bars are verry strong. and the pivoting frame works very very well, and the bike sticks to the line your rideing!! F,A,B :-)
Weaknesses:a bit on the heavy side.
Bike Setup:same as new, but i have added rock shock boxxers, kris king head set, and lock on grips.
Bottom Line:what a bargin!!!!!! truly a FAB bike, it rides like a dreem. it sticks to the line your on and this is quite a hand on the off camba sections.
i have had biger named bikes, orange, santercruz. Wen i brought it i was like yee but its a mongoose, turns out its better than the other bikes i have had, and you save a bit of chash. back wheel clogs up in very mudy condishons. i use the bike for DH and its a bike that can take the punishment of a world cup DH track, how good is that. and the brakes work lovely, just right for me. I have had the bike for about 5 months and im raceing it this weekend, i know that the bike wont let me down. toptop bike worth every penny. :-)

Date Reviewed: November 9, 2005
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $1300.00
Purchased At:Local Bike Store
Strengths:Awesome freeride bike, built tough as! Great fork and shock combo for the price and the BB5 are one of the best cable disc's you can get.
Weaknesses:You would probably want to go for the Tripple with a dual crown fork if you want a Downhill beast.
Similar Products Used:Mongoose Teocali, Cannondale Prophet
Bike Setup:Stock on 6.75" travel setting for round the local tracks.
Bottom Line:Great bike at a awesome price. Sturdy as, and inspires confidence on the down hills. Also is is a capable light XC bike, but I wouldn't want to ride it uphill all day long as it is made for going down them. Great frame base as it it used throughout the Black diamond range, and if you don't like any spec's it is surely a worthwile upgrade as this bike will keep that smile on you face for a long time.

Strengths:not much, frame color maybe
Weaknesses:a lot more here then in strengths. Hmmm... forks SUK, replaced them straight away, rear shock is not that adjustable and bottoms out of a 6ft drop. rear mech changes randomnly, seat broke off...
The list go's on
Similar Products Used:huffy
Bike Setup:was stock, now runs slider +, DHX 5, and more
Bottom Line:save yourself some money, get a huffy, it could handle bigger drops. This thing bottoms me out all the time off things i do with ease on a ht. Overall i dont think it is a bike worth the money they charge you for it. Either move away from goose or spend the extra money in getting some decent components in the double or triple !!

Strengths:great rear shock, best brakes.. awesome mechanicals, good stem and headset along with sturdy bars, great for any type of riding can take heavy stuff without having a bit of trouble,

Similar Products Used:giant ac? haha dunno

Bottom Line:yeh i love it, great price for every component on the bike being bloody good and reliable.... very sturdy can be thrown around quite a bit...!!! take it anywhere, big travel, great rear shock for price...

Favorite Trail:Blackstone
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $2000.00
Purchased At:Big Bike shop
Strengths:Plushness, travel, nice style, pedaling efficiency in the saddle, all round geometry, tyres, strong rims
Weaknesses:Weight, bob out of saddle, fork that stiffens up easily.
Similar Products Used:Haro Extreme
Bike Setup:As new exept for dice hydraulic discs and dice outlaw pedals.
Bottom Line:This is a wicked bike. With 8 inches rear travel and 6 at the front, no drop or jump is too big. It is plush and is an efficient pedaller in the seat. I love the geometry - i use it for downhill, freeride, jumping and northshore and it seams perfectly suited for it all. I have no complaints about any of the componentry on the bike, it all works really well. Super strong rims, road it around with 15 psi in tyres when i first got it without realising! The tyres i will never part with again. I will definately be getting them again. This bike is very durable and strong and its weight shows that. The weight is noticable but thats the tradeoff for strength. Love the fork apart from its inconsistency, one day its stiff as the next day its plush as. All in all, a great bike. A very good buy at a good price.
