Date Reviewed: May 1, 2004
Favorite Trail:CanmoreBanff
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $1400.00
Purchased At:Smooth Cycle (PEI, Canada)
Strengths:Good ride. The geometry of the frame gives a little added clearance for the crotch region when you're standing over it... lets you go with a slightly larger frame size, if that's your thing.
VRS (Variable Rate Suspension) was a good idea at the time, but I've barely used it. Plus it just takes a little too much work to change it up when going from road->off-road so I usually just leave it where it is.
Weaknesses:Rear triangle: at some point after the first year the rear triangle developed a stress fracture. It was not at a weld joint either... right in the metal frame.
Took quite a while to track them down and to pay for the replacement part (back in 1998). No problems since.
Bike Setup:Current Mongoose VRS 3.0 setup
Bottom Line:With good maintenance it's still a good bike almost 7 years later!

Favorite Trail:ADKs
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $750.00
Purchased At:someone won it online and did not know how to ride a bike - sold new for $750!
Strengths:Has been quite sturdy and handles pretty well. Came with some excellent components, including White Industries crank and Avid brake levers. Welding is impressive as well.
Weaknesses:Indy front doesn't do the job as well as my old bike's Marzocchi air/oil. This, plus the rear setup make the bike seem bouncy on occasion. The chain gets stuck between the smallest chainring and the bb, which can become quite annoying. Front shifter literally fell off on a ride, leaving me to shift manually for several miles.
Similar Products Used:Owned two 'goose hardtails before this full-suspension.
Bike Setup:Standard, but with new Deore/Mavic wheelset and new bars/stem. I also threw on some bar ends.
Bottom Line:Good bike, not great. I liked my old 'goose hardtail better, but it got stolen. However, I can't imagine the effects on my back had I been riding a hardtail for the past six years. I've taken this bike all over the country, and it has held up well. Could have better suspension, and the geometry isn't perfectly suited to my body - it's a bit too far between headtube and seatpost for me. But, I will miss it when it comes time to part...

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $1275.00

Strengths:Good climber, agile on tight trails, Variable Rate System suspension lets you adjust travel. Looks cool. Takes a beating a keeps going.
Weaknesses:No Mongoose dealer in West Virginia now.
A little heavy.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Hardrock Sport
Bike Setup:Mongoose VRS 3.0, Rockshox Duke XC, Cane Creek Cloud 9, Easton E50 stem and seatpost, XT derailer, Panaracer Fire XC Pro tires, ODI Lock Jaw Yeti grips, Pazzaz riser bar, Cane Creek Aeroheat SG wheels, Specialized Body Geometry seat, Speedplay Frog pedals.
Bottom Line:This is one amazing bike. I've been riding it for 6 years and it has never given me any problems. Every says to buy a new bike, but I just can't justify it. This bike does everything I ask it to and keeps coming back for more. I have upgraded it over the years, but not because I had to. Soem people have experience the chainstays breaking but this was probably from riding downhill courses. Not what this bike was designed for. This is a great cross-country bike. It also has design features that bike companies are ust now touting on their bikes. I just hope when I have to eventually replace it I get a bike that will last as long as this bike.

Weaknesses:Heavy! Broker rear triangle (big surprize)
Bike Setup:Stock, except for Judy Race forks
Bottom Line:Just broke the chainstay after 4 years. Mongoose is unreachable. Their 1800 number is unreachable from my area. They are no longer at the address shown on the website, nor are they still in Madison WI by the name Mongoose, as per the directory information operator.

Managed to do some super sloothing and found Pacific Cycles is their importer. PC has been prompt in replying to my emails and has requested I send them the busted parts. We'll see what comes of this. Will they be big about things and send me a new one?

I loved to ride this bike, and has done me so well over the years. Other than replacing the bushings, the rear hub, the bike is will be in great condition once the parts arrive. Both rims are pretty banged up too (hey 4 years of rocks and logs). I replaced the seat, and pedals on my own accord/preference.

Bike Setup:Stock except XT bottom bracket and better rear wheel
Bottom Line:This has been a very good bike. It is fun to ride. It has a solid feel that I find lacking in many other bikes. The rear triangle broke after 3 years. Mongoose was slow to answer the phone but the replacement part was available. The bike is out of warranty now. The part was only $35 plus shipping. It was on my doorstep in 3 days. It has a reinforcing plate over the welds that caused the original break so their should be no more problems. I've wornout the rear hub, bottom bracket and numerous brake pads. The bushings on the rear shock have some wear. the other bushings are still in excellent condition I want to buy a new bike, for no good reason, but will probably keep this one that has been so good to me..

I just broke the frame at the chainstay. You really want a bike from K-Mart?
Bike Setup:
VRS 1.0 upgraded all components to XTR.Rock Shock Judy.
Bottom Line:I was excited about finding a crack in the frame, anticipating engaging the proposed lifetime warranty and receiving a new frame. I was hoping Mongoose would allow me to upgrade to the new Ti DX 10.9 frame. I raced this full suspension frame for two years (I always got my Arse handed to me by hardtails) and am ready for an upgrade to a racing hard tail. I hope Mongoose will not be as difficult to work with as some of the previous posts have indicated. i would think they would want some riders with experience on their bikes, not just K-Mart Shoppers.

Bottom Line:This bike is great. I have been killing it for 2 1/2 years with only normal maintenance. I recently traveled to Killington VT. for a downhill weekend and crackedthe rear triangle at the weld behind the front chainring. This is a MANUFACTURING DEFECT!!!! Mongoose is now taken over by Brunswick out of Ohio and they SUCK! All of these other reviews are correct when they say it takes forever to be serviced. Between My local shop Sotar Bicycles and myself we have been able to hound these F--king people and supposidly my new rear triangle has been shipped. This has been a 8 week situation. Two of my friends have broken and recieved new frames within a week of the report. Mongoose is a company who looks for money only! they make or made great bikes. but now they are simply not service oriented. go to toys R us or large sports and toy stores and you will find these bikes there. Hopefully my part will come in, but never again will I or anyone I know purchase a Mongoose. They are a great bike but management there needs some serious overhauling! Be cautious of purchasing a GOOSE!

Bottom Line:It has been eight weeks since I broke the frame, and I just got the replacement last week. Dealing with Mongoose was frustrating. Sometimes I was on hold for nearly an hour waiting for a tech rep to tell me when I'd get my frame. Mongoose eventually did the right thing and sent an NX8.1, but the original fork steerer was too short. Mongoose also agreed to pay $70 to modify the fork, but I must wait another week and a half for the parts to arrive from Rock Shox. Sabino Cycles handled the warranty and have been great throughout the ordeal. I would advise everyone to ask a lot of questions about a bike factory warranty when considering different models. Four stars, I guess. A good design, and Mongoose finally took care of it.

Bottom Line:This bike was a part of my body, an extension of my nervous system. A trusted friend, a beast of burden a great adventure bike. When I got in over my head, I could just hold and let the bike ride out the rough stuff. I would recommend them to anyone untill....THE FRAME BROKE IN HALF. The chainstays snapped at the weld, forcing me to walk two miles in the desert. I will be digging out the receipt and hoping that the Mongoose/Brusnswick customer service has the right attitude about such things. If they're a good company I will get an apology and a new frame out of this awful incident. I am a thirty five year old rider- I don't do extreme jumps or any silly crap that could break my collarbone again, yet the rear section snapped in half after two and a half years. I hope this adventure in warranty-land goes well. When it's in one piece, it's a great bike design. Four peppers when it's working, subtract two for the long walk home with the broken frame.

I bought a New VRS.3.0 in March of 1997 and started Rding it regularly on single track. For 9 months I had no Problems. I broke my ankle in a low speed crash in snow in January of 1998 and wasn't able to ride for three months. The second ride into 1998 wasin early April and on a small climb I noticed a little loose wiggle in the swing arm....The swing arm at the chain ring was broken. I ride agressively on singletrack, but I am not an extreme rider, it was definately a problem with the bike. It took 16 weeks to resolve. Mongoose finally got sick of me calling them and sent me a NX8.5 1998 frame. They couldn't get another swingarm. This was good and bad, because I had to buy parts to make the frame work and the front shock I had at the time was inadequate for the new frame.....
Their service was bad and it took way too long.......I was really close to buying another frame when that one was shipped.....Read my review on the NX8.5 I broke that frame December 23rd. Mongoose.....GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS! Two Swing Arms in 6 mounths is a problem.....I only weigh 180#......The bike should hold up much better........

Mongoose reps have not even called my bike shop about this after they have called several times. After about two weeks of no contact from mongoose, I was forced to buy a KONA CINDER CONE, the best bike I have ever owned, even if it is a hard tail. Bottom Line:

Just got my NX8.1 the other day. I test rode a lot of bikes. The Goose is about the stiffest frame around under $2000 and even stiffer than the GT 1000. It's not the best value for the dollar at retail price considering the lame parts that come with it (STXrc and Indy C),but I got a swinging deal - $829 out the door including swapping the rear deraileur to a LX, upgrading the stem, bars and peddles. Everything about the bike is excellent except for the Indy C's. They are soo flexy and way too soft (cured with a heavier spring) and everytime you jump the forks top out so bad they feel like they are going to come apart (hopefully cured/helped with a spring upgrade). I wish the rear shock had adjustable rebound and compression damping, however it feels fine. The bike ways in at 30 lbs even, but I rode some 25-26 lb rigs that flexed so much that they were harder to peddle than the NX. Other than that, I love the bike so far, I am able to climb technical hills MUCH easier than on my Schwinn hardtail. And the downhills, well... you know!!!5 chilis for the nx8.1
0 chilis for the rock shox indy c

I have the VRS 5.0 which is just a little bit better specced. this bike is so awesome! there's so much adjustment in the rear and the traction uphill is amazing, pretty bobby on the fire roads, but I have my suspension super loose.
Downhill It soaks up the rumbles, while still leaving enough for the big hits.I have rarely been thrown over the bars probably due to teh really laid back riding position and find the very low standover height a great advantage (so do my meat + two veg.) seem super stable at low speed, you can really pick you line and steer it up, it it doesn't make it, just stop, balance, throw the wheel around and go again. The Neuman frames (the next generation) are supposed to be even better.Nays:
the clipless pedals shipped with it sucked
chainsuck is a real pain when it does happen you'll know all about it and have to really drag it out from behind the pivot.
the water bottle mounts came loose (maybe they'll give me a neuman frame on the warrantee!)

I am not a racer, Cross-country, Downhiller or a weekend Warrior! A tip for mtbr is to include a classification for Couriers (a joke and a serious point). Anyway, i am from london and i have been Couriering for 11 years on the London Circuit and the Mongoose VR3 is the BIZ! Mongoose bikes are very difficult to get over here in the UK and you have very little chance of getting one here let alone a VRS 3.0! I have had my VRS for about a year. the spec is now:
HI-5 RST forks with Custom Titanium race springs
Middleburn Crankset
XTR remote Transmission
Dura ace 8-speed block
Sedis Gold chain
Ringle DH stem
XTR V brakes
Mavic 217SUP with XT hubs
The rest is a trade secret...This is the first and only full suspension i will ride and believe me when i say that every full suspension has been tested on the London curcuit and she is still one of the best rides. She has done about 14,000 miles on tarmac and she is going to Nepal to ride the great Karakoram Highway(550 miles Downhill!). This is the only bike that i would do this on because i trust it so much but sadly she will die over there due to the terrain( not your fault mongoose). I don't have the VRS 3.0 but I do have the 5.0 which I got through a warranty because my AMP frame broke at the chainstay several months ago. I was a little disenchanted with Mongoose because they had told me they had three parts in stock, however several months went by and no chainstay. After months of calls, they finally told me that they didn't have the part, but they would exchange my AMP frame for the VRS frame (they wanted to give me the 3.0 but I paid a little extra for the 5.0). I was bummed because I liked my AMP frame, but now that I have the VRS 5.0, the suspension feels real plush and I am happy! However, I do have a few complaints: first, the chainsuck problem going into granny gear is a real hassle; second, at 47 MPH, the bike seems to get a high-speed wobble in the rear end (my AMP frame never did that, but that may be the rear suspension, because I don't have it set up the way I want it yet); third, the head tube is too small, so I had to use spacers to raise my handlebars even though I have a high-rise stem and downhill bars. Overall, I like the bike and it seems beefier than the AMP frame. Kudos!

Bottom Line:

I've had the 3.0 for about 8 months so far. It was my first full suspension and has given me a good impression. The only time you can tell that you have a rear suspension is over any bumps and when you get out of your seat and pedal hard. I guess that's the downside of active suspension. I haven't goten to ride it as much as I would like because my local trail was shut down about 4 months ago, but so far I haven't had any problems.I do have some complaints though. The main one is the crap Rock Shox Indy XC. It's way too soft, especially with the relatively stiff rear suspension (although it's still very plush). The fork also has tons of flex and play, especially on downhills, but Mongoose is not to blame for that. If I bought it again, I'd replace the fork for a stiffer one, but now that I think about it, they're all pretty crappy. My other main complaint is the chainsuck problem. I replaced the cranks with Race Face and Real chainrings which seems like they would be better than the no-names that come on it. The chain tears up the chainstay and it's impossible to get out. I've found out to NEVER shift into the granny ring when it's muddy, just work on your leg muscles.Besides these two main flaws, it's a perfect bike; maybe not for racing, but on trails, it kicks ass.

I've had my VRS 5.0 frame for 8 months.Overall I like the way the suspension works It is very plush. I have heard there are a lot of problems with the rock shox super deluxe but i haven't had any. I use a Z@ for riding it cross country. I also have a Boxxer for down hilling. the Boxxer jacks up the front end like a chopper but works geat in handeling the big ruts. One poster mentioned that the pivots wore out. My reply to this is TRY DOING A LITTLE MAINTENANCE ONCE IN A WHILE. I have regreased the pivots 3 times now, not because they needed it just a little peventative maintenance. my main complaint is that the head tube is so damn short. I have the Large size frame but the head tube is the same size as the one on my friends 17 inch M2. The frame was a warranty replacement from Mongoose. I have broken 5 of their other frames. I suspect this will be another shortly. I think that the shitty tawianese construction is the main problem. I give this bike only four chilis because of the short head tube

Bottom Line:

I've been riding the VRS 5.0 for a year, often on very sketchy trails. It climbs and tracks well, is very stable on downhills, and offers a plush ride. My biggest beef: the main pivot bolt, near the bottom bracket, loosens with vibration. It can back itself out several turns after even a short ride. LocTite is no help. I carry a 5mm hex at all times, and retighten often. Otherwise, the rear triangle clunks noticeably. The Judy DH fork flexes in out-of-the-saddle maneuvers, and may need an aftermarket brace, bigger axle diameter than the Parallax, or both. Dialing in the preload sag, the compression damping and rebound damping, front and rear, took forever, but was worth it. No problems with the Coupe Deluxe rear shock so far.
Chainsuck is a problem-- on an aluminum frame, it can lead to chainstay failure. I carefully filed the gouged weld to eliminate stress rises and provide clearance. Then I tossed the Shimano IG chain and the Sugino granny, substituting a Sachs M-55 and a Real SS ring. I use White Lightning or Krytech, and clean the chain after every ride. so far,so good.
Hated the Rapidfire shifters and XT V-brakes. Got GripShift X-rays, which work fine if you add Gore Ride-on cables and a Rollamajig. The Machine Tech brakes I added nearly drove me to drink. Great levers, but the arms never worked until I dumped the Wicked Sister pulleys and went back to noodles. With Gore cables, of course. The Hutchinson On-the-Rocks and Coyote tires do everything I asked them to, and are wearing very slowly.
Like any full-sus bike, it's a complex system, and does not thrive on neglect.

I found the bike cornered well on single track, felt like a hardtail on the straightaways, and was plush on Florida shellrock downhills. All we have to ride on around here are old landfills and limestone quarries, but this fierce creature would get the job done on any terrain. Sleek styling impressed my girlfriend as well, who prefers it hands down to my Cannondale Killer V. I picked the bike up for $999.00 with a lifetime tuneup, an unbelievable deal.

I have had my Mongoose VRS 5 for 9 months. It costed about AU$4000 (about US$3200). I weigh 55 kg (121 lbs) and never race downhill. I only use this bike for cross country racing and training. I thoroughly clean it after every time I ride it and get it serviced at my bike shop every couple of months. I have ridden 6000 km (400 hrs of riding) on it, about 75% of the 6000 km being off road.I have had these problems so far with THE bike:PIVOTS3 of the 7 pivots have worn out. The main pivot seized up and the swing arm started rotating on the pivot. This wore out the swing arm itself. Both swing arm and main pivot were replaced FOC.The sub-pivot in the triangular block above the main pivot wore out. It has been replaced (FOC) but there is still about 2 mm movement in this pivot which translates to about 2 cm at the rear dropouts. I am afraid the triangular piece of aluminium (part of the main frame) is worn out. If it is this means I will need a new main frame. The pivot which connects the rocker to the Rock Shox Deluxe dampener wore out after 2 months. This is a Rock Shox part. It was replaced FOC.The mongoose catalogue says all the VRS’s have sealed bearings. My bike only has unsealed bushings. I would expect more for my $4000.REAR SUSPENSION TRAVELThe arch joining the seat stays on the swing arm hits the down tube before the Rock Shox Deluxe dampener bottoms out. It can’t be good for alloy tubes to bash them together. A better design would have been to allow the Rock Shox dampener to limit the amount of travel, not the size of the tubes. The ‘control chip’ (which did not come with my bike) solves this serious problem. The chip also changes the head angle to a sharper angle and raises the bottom bracket height. The BB height with the control chip is so high I can’t touch the ground when I sit on the seat.SHIMANO PARTS!The bushings wore out on the XT V brakes until the sidewall of the tire was ripped by the pad. They were replaced FOC.The bottom bracket wore out (after 6000 km!). Replaced FOC.The XT rear derailleur main shaft ‘popped’ off the derailleur arm destroying the back wheel and dropout in the process. Derailleur replaced FOC.
I would contact Mongoose with these problems but they are one of the only bike companies not on the Internet. Get with it Mongoose, are you a small time bike business.

I've had my Mongoose VRS 3.0 for about 3 months now and I am really enjoying it. I must admit this is my first full suspension bike so I really do not have anything to compare it to.
As far as the ride is concerned, I read a few reviews before I bought the bike saying that it feels like a hardtail and I would have to concur. When you are pedaling along on a smooth surface you can see the shock working just a tiny bit but there is no pogoing; in other words, it feels like a hardtail. Although how much suspension movement you get when pedaling is going to depend on how the shock is positioned. I have my shock positioned in the upper holes which is for the stiffest ride. On the trail, the bike does a good job of soaking up bumps both big and small.
The bike is great on singletrack - it is nimble and can really handle the switchbacks. It does much better than my old hardtail which was a Gary Fisher Hoo Koo E Koo. However, the bike is also stable at high speeds.
One of the things that I immediately noticed when I first got the bike is how much better it climbed technical terrain. When the trail turns rocky and has lots of ruts, the rear suspension keeps the back tire hooked up and I can climb things much easier than I could on the hardtail. Of course, the bike is more stable when the trail starts going down.
As far as chainsuck is concerned, I only had it happen once and that was after I failed to clean the drivetrain.
I like the components on the bike and have no plans to change things until they wear out. I did put a riser bar on the bike however since at 6'2 I had five inches between my saddle height and the stock handlebar so I needed to bring myself up. I am also considering getting rid of the Indy fork and getting something a little nicer.
So far I have been really happy with the bike and think that it is reasonably priced. I would recommend the bike to everyone except for a hardcore racer who was really concerned about weight. The bike is around 28-29 pounds which hasn't been a problem for me given my size (6'2, 195 lbs.). Plus, I was coming off a hardtail that only weighed a couple of pounds less if that.

I have the 5.0, same frame but with an upgraded rear shock. I got rid of most of the parts it came with and put XTR with Kooka kranks, Chris King headset, etc.
The bike is great except for three problems.
1. Judy DH's suck. it flexes and doesn't feel as good as the XC's I rode last year.
2. The bike has a major chainsuck problems, which starts problem three...
3. When the chain gets sucked into the chainstays, it scrapes off a little bit of the weld. This is already a weak area, so after a while of hard riding the chainstays snap in half. It is not a fun experience. When the frame isn't broken it's a great bike!

, XT V brakes with levers and shifters, XT hubs and Mavic 217 for the wheelset and of course I got rid of that trashy Rock Shox and traded it for a RST HI 5.

I only have a couple of hassles: The Indy on the fromt is flexy (and I only way 58 kg (130 lbs)). If the drivetrain get dirty chainsuck can be more of a problem than on some bikes. And both ends could do with some damping adjustment. But these are only minor hassles. The Frame is rock solid and in
general the bike is just a blast to ride. It makes general riding a whole lot more fun. I was thinking of getting a hard tail but am very glad that I did not.

I don't have the VRS 3.0, but I have a Mongoose Comp SX, and I must say it is the best bike ever. It is a VRS 3.0 without the rear shock. It looks the same as the VRS 3.0 but it's a hardtail. It's got the Y-frame thing. It's a candy colour blue. It is super-stiff, super-fast, and super-light. And it only cost me $1550 canadian. It is the best bike in the world. The only reason why I'm posting this here is because there is a section for the Comp SX. Buy this bike if you get the chance. It's got a Long-Travel Judy C, full LX-XT stuff. I've added an XT rear wheel and a White Ind. front. I've got two sets of tires (double fighter duals and Omegabyte/Velociraptor Fr/rr). I've added a Rollamajig. This is a bike for life, and with Mongoose's lifetime frame warranty on it, it will last a lifetime.

I cannot believe how difficult it is to find information on the 1997 Mongoose VRS 3.0. This is an awesome ride! You can find
lots of articals on the 1.0 and other FS bikes in the $1000 range, but little for the next upgrade level. I choose the VRS 3.0 because I felt it was the best value in frame and components for the money. The 1K bikes are just to
heavy for serious riding and I know I would be replacing parts way to soon. For a list price of $1449 (you may be able to
wheel and deal with your bike shop) the Mongoose VRS 3.0 is outfitted with LX/STX components, RockShox Indy XC long
travel up front and Deluxe in the rear, White Industry cranks, Velociraptor treads, clipless peddles, LX V-brakes, Avid 2.0L
levers, and real shifters - LX rapid fire. Some people have been complaining about the bikes weight. All this adds up to 27,
maybe 27.5 lbs. Find another FS bike in this price range at this weight! For another $350 bucks you can easily drop another
pound by building up a new set of lightweight wheels. This bike's frame is very rigid. The suspension is incredible. The faster you push it the smoother and more stable the bike gets.
The fully active rear end holds the tire on the ground anywhere. There is no noticable 'pogoing', even in its lowest (22/30)
ratio. The 3.0 just digs in and climbs. I am even coming from a rigid bike. The bike tracks well in single track and you can
adjust the geometry to relax the angles if you are doing a lot of downhilling. I give the Mongoose VRS 3.0 a full 5 stars! I'll report back again after I've got several more hours on it! Anyone else out

a climb and not worry about picking a line. The suspension is really
active w/o being too mushy. The rear suspension feels just about perfect
for my wieght(165#).
I bought mine for about $1150, and feel I got a good value. I compared against
the ProFlex756(gdt upgrade),Specialized A-1comp,Fisher Y,Marin Rift Zone,GT LTS3. I rode all these bikes and felt that
the 3.0 was the best all around. I did like the Marin, but it was more money, and had a lesser component spec. and wasn't yet

haven't ever needed the Judys or anybodys for that matter, oil cartridge. The things I don't like are the lack of barends And
the LX V brakes. The brakes are better than any cantilever but Definatly not as good as the XT or XTR. I also upgraded
imediatly to An XTR rear derailer. But the overall feel of the bike is wonderfull. Fast, very quick and handles even the
roughest terrain, be it going up or down very smoothly and easily. The lateral rigity is awesome, no flex. And the setup is really
cool. On the trail adjustments are a breeze. Loosen the bolt and move the position of the shock. The Saddle is also really
