Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $150.00
Purchased At:Wal-Mart
Strengths:comfortable, sturdy, brakes
Bike Setup:all original
Bottom Line:Bought this bike about 10 years ago. I've never changed anything but tubes on it, but I just use it for transportation purposes. I've never had a problem with this bike.

If you can find this bike now at a yard sale, pick it up if you're looking for something to just cruise around on. It should last you.

Favorite Trail:Frick Park
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $100.00
Purchased At:don't remember
Strengths:Frame is durable, stock tires are okay, brakes okay, stock bar ends.
Weaknesses:ALERT: There has been a recall in regards to the Mongoose S-20s that have stock Ballistic 105 shocks that were manufactured by Brunswick Corp.

http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml02/02143.html

Frame itself is heavy as all get out
Similar Products Used:Magna
Bike Setup:Bell seat, bell pedals & toe clips.
Bottom Line:If you have this or get this second hand, make sure you're not riding on those Ballistic 105 front forks, I rode hard and bottomed them out before I found out about the recall. Call the number, they'll send you a postage paid kit to send them the front fork & then send you a check for US$65.00

Other than the possible scary front fork problems, not a bad starter bike to get into single track riding, you're not worried about trying to clean some of the more technical stuff in case your ride gets damaged, that's for sure.

Date Reviewed: July 27, 2002
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $10.00
Purchased At:garage sale
Strengths:Bike still works after some repairs. Brakes are great, shifters still work. Bike was outside for, 2-3 years and very rusty. Bike still feels solid.
Weaknesses:Some spokes were broken, rim was hard to get trued. Rear axel bearings had come apart, may not be the bikes fault, the nut was loose.
Bike Setup:b105
Bottom Line:Can not beat the price of $10. The kids started using it as soon as I finished fixing it. The 10 to 13 year olds like it the best because of its size. If it checks out I will replace the bearings in the rear with new. My 15 year old has been jumping curbs with it.... so far so good. This bike looks like it is an excelent buy for us as a used bike. We would have paid more if the rear axel was ok. Other than the axel problem, all it took to get it working was adjustments (rim, shifter, brakes) and oil (shifter, brakes, wheel bearings, crank, peddels-used the spray can lub).

Favorite Trail:powerlines
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Strengths:Strong Frame, pretty good brakes when well adjusted.
Weaknesses:stock parts, weight, handling
Bike Setup:stock
Bottom Line:This is a great bike for beginners and it is at a great price. If you are just starting downhill, x country, or just looking for a comfortable road bike than this bike is for you. For people looking for something that will withstand more technical riding, this bike is not your choice. The handling is bad in technical areas and the cheap derailers and stock parts break and fail easily. Also occasionally skips gears. The frame will hold up and has a nice feel when riding, just not for the advanced riders.

Date Reviewed: June 13, 1999
Duration Product Used:
less than 1 month
Strengths:
brakes
Weaknesses:
just about everything else
Similar Products Used:
a Magna from Target
Bike Setup:
Ballistic 105
Bottom Line:I started using this bike when I realized that my Magna was inadequate. I soon noticed that the Mongoose was equally inadequate. My front suspension works intermittently, the rims are easy to damage, and it doesn't set you correctly for speed. After dealing with the MGX for a month, I made a couple of cheap upgrades on my department store Magna, and I'm back to riding it until I find something else.
