Everyday I go several miles on this bike and never have to stop to adjust or fix anything. The frame is light, but extremely rugged. The twist shifters are smooth, and fall into place very well, even after this many years.
Great for trails or streets, I even have fun cutting through raw forest without stopping on this bike.
After replacing the stock seat you can be comfortable for hours a day on this bike. | | Weaknesses: | The seat that it comes with is junk, after a short while it makes your ass hurt alot. The front derailer is bent, and it costs more to fix it than the bike did when it was bought, so the pedals jump when I push too hard.
I would rather have indexed shifters, but there's nothing wrong with what's already on it. | | Bike Setup: | Stock

$200.00 | | Purchased At: | independent bike store | | Strengths: | solid cr-moly frame - indestructable, respectible components, reliable performer, sram grip shifting. extremely light wheels. | | Weaknesses: | a bit on the heavy side (at least 30lbs), older model so no rear suspension. 1" steer tube really extincted. no disc brake bosses on the fork. | | Similar Products Used: | phoenix boulder and cheap department store bikes | | Bike Setup: | 16" frame, rock shox jett xc fork, avid single digit 7 brakes, avid fr-5 levers , grip shift shifter, shimano altus group, pancracer dart/smoke rubber, and everything else is mongoose branded (etc. stem,seat,rims) | | Bottom Line: | Had this since new, and still rocks, alot of new stuff out there is aluminum and dual suspension but I'll take a chromoly frame anytime. Just feels better/livlier.

I have since upgraded to a mountian bike but THIS IS A GOOD BIKE. The brakes are the best, and it holds together great! It is great for long distance rides and is a quiet bike. | | Weaknesses: | The gears easily get out of set and it can be a hard ride on your ass. The pedals have been fine since I put cages on. This bike will last a long time with occassional use. | | Weaknesses: | I bought this bike new in June 1997 and only rode it a few times before the summer of 2003. I began riding it 4-6 times a week for 30-120 minutes each ride on paved roads. The seat had to be replaced almost immediately! Within two months the rear derailer had to be replaced. Since then I have had to replace numerous parts and have it in the shop after every few rides due to continued problems with shifting. I do ride long and hard as I am over 200lbs, but it is a nuisance. This bike is probably best for the ocassional rider or an older youth riding it down the street to a friend's house. I was forced to buy a second bike after riding this one only a few months as this one can't take the riding I give it. | | Similar Products Used: | not too similar: 2004 Specialized Sirrus Sport | | Bike Setup: | Original parts with new Shimano Acera rear derailer, Body Geometry seat, foot cages, Kevlar in the tires, tons of work on front and rear derailers, replaced cables, and tons of tune-ups and adjustments. | | Bottom Line: | It's a good bike for the ocassional rider who isn't going to give it much. The bike is a bit heavy, but not too noticed when riding. Expect to replace parts quickly and frequently the more it is ridden. This bike is not for someone who is going to ride long rides often or expect to take it on anything besides roads and trails. For the price I paid buying it new, it's not a bad bike. $110.00 | | Purchased At: | Dick's Sporting Goods | | Strengths: | 21 speeds, durable rear suspension for me of 135 lbs., long enough seat post for various adjustments, smooth breaking (for some inexpensive brakes), and shorter frame (if you bought it for a youth...but not to young because it is still an adult size bike). | | Weaknesses: | The front suspension forks are so soft for me. I jumped today and banged the forks loudly to the bottom of the suspension. Nasty! I will give the bike the benefit of the doubt if my friend can adjust the firmness of the the front suspension forks. But, if he can't I discourage the buying of it. The gears are fine, but will need to be adjusted after the cables stretch some. I feel like it is to heavy too. I does not take turns as easily as my Mongoose Rockadile. And unfortunately these are all advantages. | | Weaknesses: | Rigid frame. It`s heavy. Drive is very weak. Pedals are also weak because they are made from plastic and you can`t use devices that fastens your shoes with them. Back gears, grip shifts, brakes, brake levers, are miserable. It will be useful if you ride around your block of flats or to school or to work but if you ride rough don`t buy it. | | Bottom Line: | I had bought it and I had been satisfied but some parts didn`t work properly and broke down very soon after rough ride. I`ve still got it but I changed almost everything besides the frame, rims, hubs and cranks. Smooth components. | | Weaknesses: | Really crappy chain, and I did not like the stock slick tires. The 1" threaded fork makes it almost impossible to find a replacement suspension fork. | | Similar Products Used: | Trek and GT. | | Bottom Line: | I have put about 1500 miles on it, mostly in trails. The stuff we ride is pretty tame, no x-games style downhills. In all that time, includint a rather nasty spill, the bike has only ever needed cable adjustments. It seems to be bullet-proof. I like the bike just fine until my freinds with front suspension bikes leave me all by myself on the downhills. The VERY rigid frame makes me know I am hitting every bump in the trail, and even the gel gloves don't help the wrist abuse I take. I have actually had the handlebasr knocked out of my hand on fast downhills. I thought about upgrading the fork to a suspension, but with the partial steel frame and older style brakes, I am just going to start with a better class bike. As a beginner, it was perfect for me, but once you get your feet wet, you will want more. | | Value Rating:Overall Rating: |
