$600.00 | | Purchased At: | Reed's Bike Shop in 1989 | | Strengths: | Tange cromoly frame is beefy.Wishbone rear stay keeps the frame from flexing during climbs and hard sprints.Straight blade Tange forks look cool. | | Weaknesses: | Non really except 26.4 mm seat tube diameter is too small to upgrade to a wider, modern seatpost.Typical of mountain bikes this old.Tange headset needed replacing after efforts to tighten down constantly.Replaced with Chris King. | | Bike Setup: | Shimano XT derailleurs,XT brakeset,Tioga T-Bone w/ Answer Hyperlite XC Handlebars. Shimano STX 175mm crankarms w/42t Suntour PowerRings.Specialized B-26 rims w/ 26x2.00 Hutchinson Mosquito Airlights.Nashbar 26.4 mm seatpost/Sella Flight SLR Ti saddle.Odyssey Svelte cage pedals,1992 Titec/Bontranger Titanium bolt kit. | | Bottom Line: | This is the original 1989 IBOC Pro.Frame design based on John Tomac's winning IBOC Team bike. It's also my first racebike used in my first ever offroad race so it holds a special place in my collection.Favorite phrase to describe this bike still holds true;A Rocket! With some upgrades to modern tires and seats.Still a very good looking bike.A little heavy but still very fast.Climbs and sprints like a rocket. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1000.00 | | Purchased At: | The Cycle Path | | Strengths: | Frickin' light! Awesome shifting, best ride ever. | | Weaknesses: | kind of low bottom bracket, almost sketchy on fast downhills. didn't dig the twist shift either - prefer rapidfire. indys were kind of not supple (but light). | | Similar Products Used: | nothing compared or compares (that i've tried) | | Bike Setup: | cro mo frame, all xt, rear derailleur was sram, thompson post, selle san marco seat, titec stem, mavic 221 rims. awesome cool. indy xc 3" travel. | | Bottom Line: | this bike rocked so hard. i beat the poop out of it over and over, ground the hell out of the derailleurs and the chain and never broke a thing. super light at like 22.5 pounds it climbed like a dream and was soooooo nimble on single track, i miss it so much i really do. the only bike i've ever had that i had like no problems with. only a bit of chainsuck, but no big deal. amazing xc racer. sad story: my cousin folded the frame and then the whole thing was stolen out of my garage. if anyone out there that would part with their frame, i want it so bad. please sell it to me. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1000.00 | | Purchased At: | RollingHills Cycle | | Strengths: | lightweight chromoly frame, toptube is slanted, great Shimano XT parts, Avid, Mongoose mix, Hutchinson tires, XT wheelset with Mavic 221 | | Weaknesses: | Front fork---RS Indy XL Rear cassette 11-28. Needs a 30, 32 big cog. I cant climb very well on steep stuff with a 28 tooth. | | Similar Products Used: | no chromoly high end bikes Ive ever seen | | Bike Setup: | stock, except for lights. The 1997-98 IBOC Pro SX is already loaded, unless you want XTR. | | Bottom Line: | Ultra light chromoly is as light as a good 7005 aluminum but feels better on the trail. Too bad Mongoose doesnt make this frame anymore since I dented the downtube on a boulder. But I rode this badboy all summer long in 98 and 99. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Total weight- 23.4 lbs | | Bottom Line: | Man, did I beat the crap out of this bike! Mine was a '95 model. I broke the frame twice and scratched the hell out of the poor thing. I weigh 200 lbs so you can imagine how hard this bike had it. I even went Downhilling with this thing- AND CRASHED- HARD- MANY TIMES!
It was the best XC bike I ever owned. I loved this bike and only got rid of it in '97 because I bought an Intense Uzzi SL. "Whereever you are buddy, rest in peace!" | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I had this bike for about six months and haven't had any problems with it. I ride this bike about twice a week and it takes a lot of abuse. I have the 1997 Iboc pro sx.It is a light and nimble riding bike.I live on the east coast and the bike is well suited for the tight, twisty, and rooty terrain we have. The frame has just enough flex to make the ride comfortable. With xt/lx and a judy xc the bike is 24lbs.A great bike.. | Overall Rating: |

Excellent value for the dollar. Super-light, ethereal handling on singletrack. HOWEVER, be prepared for lotsa flex. If your a light rider, its o.k. If your heavy (or clydsdale) your screwed. The Indy SL Long travel - flexy. The 'Ritchy Logic' tubing - flexy. The rims, stem, handlebars - all light, too light; built for weight, not strength - you will have to replace them (shortly). Last beef, paint. The paint seems to chip VERY easily. However, all of this pales by comparison to a 23.5 Lb, XT grouppo hardtail, that flies. | Overall Rating: |

I got the mongoose proSX in 95...it had the carbon frame and pretty good compenents ....also a great price...but a monthe after i bought the bike i notice flex in the carbon fiber frame....i brought back to the store a few time and they told me it was nothing... but later on i discouver that i already cracked the frame by the bottom bracket all the way thru.....and iu can stretch the frame an extra inch....after the time i never go back to carbonfiber frame for a while..but they gave me credit towards another frame....I picked up a norco team issue frame and that was the best handling frame i ever have.. p.s. i did one race with the IBOC PRO-SX.... | Overall Rating: |

Oh cant forget the handling and control you have over the bike when riding. | Overall Rating: |

I haven't had my frame built up more than a few weeks but man this bike kicks ass. I work at a bike shop and have ridden everthing out there, lemme tell ya that this is how a bike should climb, descend, and feel over the chatter bumbs and ruts that I come across in So. Cal. I know a few old reps and with the addition of a cris king headset there were no more problems to be fixed, This class piece of work deserves five fat flamin' chilies. | Overall Rating: |

This bike is pure shit. The top tube is way too long and is skinnier than my jimmy.I have to have brake boosters because of the flex in the pinnie seat stays. It is still a great bike and because of the flex it feels like my M1SL. I give it 5 chillies | Overall Rating: |

I have bought my IBOC Pro three years ago. Even though I was told those frames break in joints I am fully content with it - my frame is perfect after at least 6000 kms ridden in severe conditions. Handling, climbing - no problem. After one year of riding I upgraded it with Rock Shox Mag fork which significantly contributed to my cycling enjoyment. The only part which is a piece of shit was the original headset - ofter loosening so that I threw it away and changed it for better type. This was, however, the only weak point of my bike. Therefore, I would award it 4 stars | Overall Rating: |

I just bought a Mongoose IBOC PRO SX - '96 Model. It's spec is great and because I bought it from a store while closeout sale, it's worth. The bike is a very good one - good frame and good components. But I found some problems after 2days of riding. First its headset. The headset is losen(it's aheadset), and there was a heavy grease on the chain initially. After few hours riding, I had to totally disassemble the cassette, chain, and cranks, then degrease parts from heavy & dirty grease. Then reassemble them and lube with white lightning - to me it works. Before this there was shifting problems, no more shifting problems after the white lightning. But headset problem is consistent. I'm going to change it with another one - King set from my old bike. Also, there is a strange sound near BB - I'll check it soon. The rear brake is Shimano's V, and need brake booster, IMHO - because when I do rear brake the frame moves and brake lever is almost push my fingers. One more thing. Tubes. Almost all parts of the bike is very good ones except tubes - very cheap tubes(it's shape is not a donut shape!!)Shortly, one should do following works after buying this bike: 1. remove all grease from the drivetrain and use good lube 2. replace tubes with good ones(I use $3 tubes, better than default tubes) 3. check the headset 4. add brake booster for rear brakeExcept above things, I'm very satisfied with this bike. Fast climb, good balance, and very controlable.4.5 Stars! | Overall Rating: |
