Favorite Trail:City & Beach
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $40.00
Purchased At:Local Pawn Shop
Strengths:Great shocks, frame, gearing, and smooth ride.
Weaknesses:Horrible stock seat.
Similar Products Used:Mongoose only
Bottom Line:I haggled this at a local pawn shop for $40. It was in horrible condition, all cables were out of wack, tires were blown, chain slightly rusted. I replaced tires and tubes to high-end mountain riding schwinn products, fixed the cables and replaced the brakes, installed a comfort seat, got the rust off the chain, etc. This bike is probably now one of the best I've had. The gears change quietly and with ease. The ride is great, on pavement and rough terrain. The "rock-shox" make bumps feel invisible. Great project bike, and easy to fix up. Total including bike price to fix up probably cost around $500. Well worth spending.

Strengths:very good and strong frame, decent components for the money.
Weaknesses:crotch nummer seat, nasty slick kendal tires, rear derailer.

Bottom Line:for 200.00 it is a great bike overall---and extremily easy to up grade as i did--it is now a 1400.00 bike, so for those looking for a bike for 200.00 dollars---this is the one--if you can find one, I really love this bike now after upgrading, and the wired orange paint is awsumb too. so i will give it five flaming chillies.

Submitted by Chuck a Weekend Warrior from Indianapolis,Indiana
Date Reviewed: July 8, 2005
Favorite Trail:DownHill at Killington, Vt.
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $200.00
Purchased At:A Bike Shop after crashing my hardtail on a very fast access road on killington MT.
Strengths:Frame can be upgraded, very good option. All other parts work great as long as if you dont smash them on some rocks!
Weaknesses:The Kenda tires. The day I bought mine I bought new tires.
Similar Products Used:I have tried so many bikes I can't list them all!
Bike Setup:I have only changed the tires and upgraded to a RS Judy in 2003 because I wanted more travel on front wheel. ( The old Jett C was wearing out! )
Bottom Line:I first got this bike because I trashed my other bike (bent frame) on a three day weekend getaway with my buddy's. I needed something to get me thru the weekend and I did not have a lot of money to spend. Someone had traded in the d60 for a big dollar bike and the nice sales guy told me I could buy the d60 for cheap money and if I wanted to upgraded parts it would be the perfect bike for me. So the only thing I changed before I left the store was the tires and an Avocet computer. The d60 spent the next two days down hilling at 40+ mph on Killington's VT. Access roads. The wheels needed truing at the end of the each day but the bike held up just fine! For the next few years of its life it was trashed and slashed on Ski Resort Mountains. Then I moved to Indiana! I found some nice single track trails to beat up the bike on. But the worst I can manage is to slightly bend the original wheels after hitting big rocks at way to fast speeds! The bike might be heavy compared to higher priced bikes but if you want a light bike, leave the Camel Back at home (six pounds) and loose five thru Ten pounds by working out!

Bottom line is: We all want a bike to go faster and harder than everyone else. (That’s why we want to spend 1-3k on a bike) but 30 percent is the bike and 70 percent is the skill of the rider! So before you dig deep into your pocket how serious are you going to take Mountain bike riding?

Favorite Trail:Cameron Park,Waco,Tx
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $130.00
Purchased At:Billy Bob's Pawn Shop
Strengths:Cheap,strong,very reliable,low maintenance,upgradeable.
Weaknesses:Rear suspension SUCKS,lots of rebounding when pedaling (pogo effect),the original derraileur and Megarange cassette not compatible with me.
Similar Products Used:None, always ride hardtails, but I rode a Cannondale Super Vee 1000 and a Scalpel 1000 from two freinds and have a little reference.
Bike Setup:Stock fork, stem, handlebar, seat, seatpost, bottom bracket, front derrailleur and rear V-brake,Formula Weinmann wheelset,Shimano STC-RX cranks and chainrings (44-32-22 donated from my Trek 930)Deore front V-brake,Deore LX shifters and brake levers and Deore XT rear derrailleur and cassette,Shimano 525 SPD pedals, riding on Hutchison Python in front and Tioga Psycho T-T tires on back
Bottom Line:For the money I paid for this...Ha!,nothing comes close, I ride this thing hard, 3 to 5 times a week sometimes, specially during racing season, and almost all the parts came from my Trek 930 (some of them already been replaced),It thrieves on neglect,I rarely do anything to it and holds its own, adjustments when it needs it (almost never),I use this bike for training and it's been serving my purpose completely.

Favorite Trail:too many
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $140.00
Purchased At:Costco
Strengths:great price, unbreakable frame, decent brakes and OK components, and durable rear shock
Weaknesses:Kenda tires are garbage, and dangerous in wet conditions.(i have taken a few nasty spills when the roads were wet). heavy steel rear fork, rear derailleur(has to be re-adjusted almost every ride), and bad Rock shox fork. Rims bend easily, and the seat is painful
Similar Products Used:cannondale f700, Jamis dakar comp 2002
Bike Setup:basically stock except for Performance contour seat, Michelin WildGripper hot S tires and new tubes.
Bottom Line:This bike is unbeatable for the price range, and is comparable to bikes that cost upwards of $700. i have taken the bike on hundreds of trails, and have probably put over 500 miles on it. although it needs alot of maintenence, it is a great and sturdy bike, good for someone just getting into the sport. if you buy this bike, you should upgrade almost all of the components(fork, derailleurs, tires, rear cassette(gears) once you upgrade, it will be a great bike, although a bit heavy

Favorite Trail:God's Skateboard Park
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $260.00
Purchased At:Costco
Strengths:Price, upgradable and under-rated fork, unified rear triangle frame, durability
Weaknesses:most components don't hold up and/or work well right off, but are easily swapped
Similar Products Used:Schwinn Homegrown, Klein full suspension
Bike Setup:knobby tires, pedals with clips, longer stem, seat post, Rithey seat, standard crank, 14-28 freewheel
Bottom Line:There is no rear shock--it has a spring-holder in the rear, but shock absorption is non-existent. Good bike after it's upgraded, and assuming you can stand the weight--for 8-times more money (Klein) the components get somewhat better and the bike gets lighter and more adjustable, but otherwise not that noticable. I weigh 215 and it's held up well. Good for beginners, upgrade as you go.

Purchased At:walmart
Strengths:strong frame, decent components, good price
Weaknesses:rear shock sux, seat painful, cable runbs paint off near head tube, jus minor things
Similar Products Used:1997 cannondale f1000 (my uncle's)
Bike Setup:mavic crossland wheels, panaracer fire xc, shimano xt 8-spd cassette, xt rear derailer, s-works strongarm 2 cranks, lx front derailer, san marcos seat, lx levers, old grip shifts, but frotn shifter broke.
Bottom Line:I have put this bike through more than i think it was intened to do. This was a birthday gift and my first bike. I have ridden it sruprisengly mostly steets, about 50 miles a week. Took it trail riding at lake valentine, and it did alright. Maintenance has been ridiculous, as in at least once a month something broke or had to be adjusted. I ve broken or replaced most the original part except the headset, stem, handlebars, and fork. I think the handlebars and/or stem will be the bext casualty casualty. There is a bad creaking adn popping sound coming from the bar. I have takin off bars and lightly greased the bolts on the stem, but still creaks.

The bike rides great when it works. I have spent hours and hours riding all over town, though its a mtb. The kenda tires are decent road tires, but ive punctured twice. Ive ridden it through the woods and on the campground loop at valentine afew times and it performed better than i expected, but i prefer to take my uncle's f1000. I think part of it ids tere isnt much need for fs in louisana.

Currently i am looking to sell the D60R. I am looking to buy a schwin homegrown from my uncle with a bunch of nice parts on it, but i have to take many of my goodies off this bike and put them on the homgrown frame. Any one who is interested in purchasing this bike from me with mostly stock parts except the cassette and fork, let me know! Great Price!

This is a great bike and i will miss it if i ever sell it.

Favorite Trail:Oleta Park, N. Miami
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $250.00
Purchased At:Bells Bike Shop, N Miami
Strengths:Frame, Price, componentry(for the price it almost all works smoooothly),looks, shifters and derailleurs smooth as glass, love the granny gear (34 tooth rear/28 front)
Weaknesses:tires too slick, seat a buttmauler, rear derailleur wheels freeze after about 600 miles, seatpost kept slipping(nose-up saddle), bottom bracket
Similar Products Used:first fs bike, I'm an old roadracer
Bike Setup:WTB Velociraptors, new two-bolt seatpost and gel seat, sealed shimano bottom bracket, Alivio rear Derailleur, Specialized handlebar grips, otherwise stock
Bottom Line:I waited six months to report on this bike, ride technical trails and bang around Oleta twice a week(12 mile circuit) since August 2001 on this thing.Too bad it's not being produced any more, great intro ride for beginners. I Weigh 145#,5'10",I've ridden the tar out of it, couldn't break anything after about 700 miles on Oleta's rock/root trails, been hard on the chassis and all is well, a great beginner bike, especially for $250. Only issue that may be important is the placement of the bottom bracket, as part of the swingarm, not frame. Weighs 32 pounds, so I'm really in good shape now! Will upgrade soon, was planning on wearing this one out first, but can't do it. 5 chili dogs.

Favorite Trail:Mansell, Sope Creek
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $400.00
Purchased At:Wal-Mart
Strengths:Price, Frame
Weaknesses:BAD tires, components work good but aren't anything special
Bike Setup:KORE stem, RS SID 100, Formula Evoluzione 9.5 disc brakes, Rolf Dolomite disk wheels
Bottom Line:When I bought this bike, I had done NO mountain biking. This bike seemed to be a good deal, but I didn't push it too hard. Two or three years later, it's still going strong.

The shocks were great in the beginning, but I got a great deal on my SID 100. The tires are fine 'till you try to go uphill, then they spin and you fall. Original brakes have held up pretty well, but I just wanted to try disc brakes. The frame is not too light, but it's really thick aluminum, so it's strong.

The only thing that I've broken so far is the rear derailleur. While wrecking on a ramp, I think the derailleur hit a stump before the bike landed on me. This kind of thing is expected, so I'm not blaming the bike.

Overall this bike has held up great, and has been well worth the money.

Weaknesses:seat post is too small, horribly pre-assembled at
Wal-Mart, needed much tuning and adjusting by a
Professional, gears need adjusting
Similar Products Used:a 24 speed with same Rock Shock Jett-C fork
Bike Setup:stock (except for seat post)
Bottom Line:I'm a beginner at mountain bikes (I was stricktly BMX for about 2 years). I purchased this bike on clearence at Wal-Mart for $100!!!!! I consulted my uncle Chris Darby first, who worked at Red River Cyclery for years and has riddden and fixed bikes often. We compared it to other models that cost $250, though the D60R is almost 4 years older, it had better parts and frame for the money. The Kenda slickers are good for me cause i mostly ride streets, but will start real trailing in spring with my uncle. The shocks are adjustable, and mine are pretty middle-of-the-road. The rear spring is a tad big for me at 750. I'm only 145 and probably could use a 600 pounder. Wal-Mart deserves a slap on the rist for horribly assembling such a good bike. Chris had to pretty much rebuild the whole thing. Get a bike shop man to tune your bike before taking it anywhere.
Excellent bike for money. All should buy it, but pros should adjust and customize first.

Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $200.00
Purchased At:The Sports Authority
Strengths:Well, I'd have to say price. Shimano V-brakes work well, thou.
Weaknesses:With stock it is unridable-very unsafe! I was actually scared the tires would slip or the front shock (Rock Shok Jett) would start bouncing.
Similar Products Used:Mongoose nx 8.5 pro (the best ever), K2-ZedX, etc.
Bike Setup:Stock.
Bottom Line:It is a confortable ride for a recreational rider or beginner, but not for someone who has gone beyond the intermediate level. I have praised Mongoose's well-designed frames for its responsiveness and confort, but not this time.
The bike is unsafe and I haven't done the cool trails with downhill stretches because of the following:
The Jett C fork is unadjustable. Good for riding down a curb or something but no good for a serious ride.
Kenda tires are the worst. Somebody should keep kenda from selling dangerous products like its tires
The frame is not very responsive. Confortable yes, but on a sharp fast turn you could end up on the floor in no time.

Rating. It's tricky. Value is good, since you'd only pay like $250 for it and well, what do you want for that price?
Overall, its not a pro or serious bike, but with new tires it could take you places confortably just for fun. I'd give it a 3.5, but only even numbers.

Strengths:Good, solid and confortable geometry (a Mongoose trademark). Very stable on tight, fast turns. Light weight for a full suspension bike.
Weaknesses:The stock Kenda tires are not very safe, even on pavement. Puncture easily.
Similar Products Used:Mongoose hardtail Rockadile SX, Mongoose NX PRO 8.5, Specialized RockHopper.
Bike Setup:Stock. Kenda tires, RockShox Jett C front shock, Shimano drivetrain.
Bottom Line:I got this bike because my Mongoose NX 8.5 PRO got stolen (that was the best bike I ever rode). This one costs 1/4 of what I paid for the NX 8.5. I decided to buy it when I rode my friend's. I was amazed with the geometry of the frame. It is very confortable and maneuverable and handles well on fast downhilling and tight turning. Geometry and confort are some of the most underrated characteristics of a good bike and most riders dont mention it in their reviews. The rear shock is bouncy and the JETT C cannot be adjusted but it does absorb a lot of bumps and pot holes well. The granny gear is useful, but a gear is missing between 1 and 2. I havent upgraded it yet, but the tires and the seat gotta go. The rest of the stock can be replaced as your riding gets better or wears out. Good bike for the money.

Bottom Line:Ive ridden it stupidly for 2 years now, nothing has really broke yet,but the bottom bracket went out because water ran in the water bottle mount holes and filled up with water. The gear ratio sucked, I am much happier with my new gearing. the seatpost was too short, easy to fix. Other than the terrible assembly at Wal Mart, making it necessary to go over the entire bike and redoing everything, I have no complaints, It has been fun, cheap, and dependable riding I havent even had to true the wheels yet and I weigh 200 pounds.

anywho, it is a great beginers bike that can be upgraded into a very good bike and you will have it for a long time because i can assure you that the frame won't brake.

Strengths:price, shocks, looks, tough frame,
Weaknesses:tough frame but heavy, seat, tires, derailleurs, tubes
Similar Products Used:this is my first FS bike
Bike Setup:speedometer, specialized tires,
Bottom Line:I bought this bike as an impulse buy but I tried other more expensive FS bikes afterwards. I'm happy to say that it was almost as good if not better than the other expensive bikes out there. The tires that came with it was too slick for comfort and the tubes got punctured my first time on a trail. I replaced it with better ones (Specialized)and I have more confidence with it now. I think I made a good purchase for a starting FS bike and I can't wait to upgrade the components to make it better.
Right now, the bicycle weighed 32 lbs. and that is a little heavy for going uphill. I don't know if I can make it lighter with different components but I will try:)

Overall this is a good bike for overall use but needs upgrades to be a serious mountain bike. However, you can't really go wrong with the price and you get what you pay for and you get a lot with this bike. Buy it if you don't care what people with more expensive bikes say - you know you did good:)

Strengths:Great, full-suspension bike for the money.
Weaknesses:Dead-weight for a rear swing arm, the granny gear can wear you out on a long uphill. Saddle gets uncomfortable on long road rides.
Bike Setup:Factory minus tubes (they were gone in a week).
Bottom Line:I bought this bike in June as my first serious mountain bike because it was a 20 mile drive to closest place to roller blade. I didn't want to spend the average $1k for a full-suspension, but I liked the idea of having a little cushion on the front and back. So far I haven't been disappointed.

After having the bike for nearly two months, I've put it through it's paces. The ride is excellent and it seems to be pretty sturdy. I've thrown some softball sized rocks from the front tire into the frame, no dents or scratches and the rims aren't giving on rocky downhills.

The rear gear could use one more gear between 1 and 2 as it gets pretty tiresome on long slow slopping uphills. With that granny gear, however, I have yet to find a hill that I can't climb. Another minus is the seat, it's fine so long as you're not on the road where you're on the seat the whole time.

Overall, the bike is a great value. I got mine for $250 and after having it for a few months would have paid that much again for the bike. In my opinion, it's an excellent bike for someone just getting into the sport that wants a good bike but doesn't want to stay up late at night feeling guilty that they spent too much money on something "just to try it".

However, for a casual rider like me, this bike has the perfect ratio of price ($300 at Costco) to quality. Besides, it's not that difficult to upgrade the components as your riding and mechanical skills grow.I agree with the previous poster's comment about the bike having too many stickers. I took all of mine off except for the Mongoose stickers - makes it look much better. Just use a little Goo Gone to get the residual glue off and you're in business.

Stripped the kickstand and de-dorked it (removed reflectors and such). I think the tires are what you make of them...semi-slicks are not going to perform well unless on semi-packed dirt. That gear between 1 and 2 sure would come in handy now and then! The tires that come on it are semi-slicks...read useless. The seat is a nut-number. So far, I have added a Selle San Marco Race Day saddle, Continental Atlanta front tire, Continental Montana rear tire, Pyott barends, BobKe's Prayer Stix, underseat bag, pump, etc. It is slowly becoming a better off-road bike, and I think I will finally be happy with it once I get a good Shimano 8 or 9-Speed Gearset on it.

For the money this bike will hang with the best. Lite wieght aluminum frame, good Shimano gears and rides very comfortably. Front shock is only a RockShock Jett but fills good, maybe you will need to upgrade to a JudyXC or Manitoub. The Tires that came with my bike suck so I replaced them with my old Darts. The seat will have you wondering if you can get the old johnson up after a hard ride so replace it with a nice gel seat. So far for the low price tag Mongoose has produced a very good ride with the D60R, so for all you poeple out there looking for good MTB check it out. Mongoose also makes a D70R for a hundred bucks more you get a better deralliur.
