Date Reviewed: August 9, 2005
Favorite Trail:shelby farms
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $50.00
Purchased At:Yard Sale
Strengths:Appearance..Bike looks like it cost much more..Frame is well built, and can take a lot of punishment..when this bike first was released,it was a decent choice for full suspension MT Bike hauling..and even USED, unless it's totally trashed out, it's still a fairly decent buy, years after it's release..
Weaknesses:Many..basic set up-is crap. low budget fare like bad derailers, (front & back ) spongy tires, that gets flats real easy..So so brakes, and pads, black steel rims, which after awhile, wear the paint off the side of the rims, Very HEAVY FRAME..crappy and very uncomfortable seat, with a lead pipe for a seat post..shifting at times, is hit and miss..when it works, not bad..when it screws up, your crotch takes a whipping ,as it either slams down on the seat, or on to the frame below..ouch !
Similar Products Used:Schwinn's and slightly higher priced Raleighs and Treks..
Bike Setup:basic D40R set up..with Ballastic 105 front shock, and the rest of the sub average Mongoose offerings..
Bottom Line:Not a bad bike..actually, and I bought it some years ago,at a moving sale-for half a 'C' note. Rode it stock for an while, but got tired of adjusting everything..and having my balls racked on the seat,or frame, when flying down some brutal trail..Finally took it outta the attic, a few weks ago, as my schwinn got trashed, and my Trek got stolen by some low life..Forgot how heavy it was...So have decided to swap parts off my Schwinn, and purchase other items..and replace the hubs, rims, tires, seat and post, crank and derailers..and add a front and back light..as it'll double as my around midtown Memphis bike, until I can buy a newer ultra light bike..either road or Mountain..also wanna replace the Ballastic with a rock shok judy,or similar front show..My D40R is that weird canary yellow with red MGoose decals..Once it has been upgraded and you slash 5-10 pounds or more off it, it becomes a pretty decent bike..as of late,I've seen several other D40R's, been retro fitted with decent upgrades..and they become pretty decent pre 1999 bikes..and you can really beat the heck outta 'em..and they hold up well..unlike a lot of the newer high price Mt.Bikes, which are basically all yak and no shak..

Date Reviewed: August 17, 2003
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $220.00
Purchased At:Wal-Mart
Strengths:It rode very nice and the frame never gave me problems, and I never had problems with front shocks
Weaknesses:Derailurs were a big time problem, I was riding very fast on a straight street rode and the front and rear derailurs broke and the cable broke as well i end up doing a frontflip over my hand bars and tacoing my front rim and breaking my front brakes
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:Right now im not riding this bike im working on striping it and replacing every part except the frame, looking at a single or double ring crank... If you buy this bike then I would def. look into upgrading to something better
