Date Reviewed: October 16, 2001
Favorite Trail:Mt.Coo-tha
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $1200.00
Purchased At:The Gap bike shop
Strengths:Looks powerful with huge chunky head tube and actually very rigid, plush M Z-3 forks, nice Hayes mechanical disk brakes, and TOUGH TOUGH TOUGH!
Weaknesses:Useless headtube gimmick which always clicks, too chunky heavy headtube, crappy Koski pedals and Raceface Prodigy cranks with backled chainring, cheap cheap "No-brand" chain, the slider tires, harfway 3inch travel of forks, and over 31 pound weight! Is this a XC bike or freeride bike!?
Similar Products Used:So many XC and full suspension freeride bikes but nothing like hardtail freeride bikes.
Bike Setup:Was: Marzocchi Z-3 coil forks (80mm travel) / XT R deraillur / Deore F deraillur, gear shifters, cluster / Raceface Prodigy cranks with TRUVATIV splined bottom bracket/ Koski clipless pedals / WTB speed disk XC wheels / WTB Tyranoraptor tires / Avid SD brake levers / Hayes mechanical disk brakes / Kore lite stem 3 and Kore riserbar

Now: XT cranks / VP clipless pedals / Deore hydraulic disk brakes / Tioga Factory DH 2.1 tires / riser bar shortened
Bottom Line:I think this is pretty good bike but totally halfway.
Too heavy for a XC bike, XC disk wheel doesn't look strong enough / too long stem / too short travel of forks for DH or dirt jumping.
And the gimmick. This enables the head angle adjustment, but thanks to this, my bike is always clicking all the time despite no mattar how I tighten it.

I have nothing to complain about Hayes mechanical disk but I got Shimano Deore hydraulic disks so I changed.

On the other hand, when downhill this bike is pretty stable and fast. I'm thinking of changing fork travel and already changed the tires from "slider" tires.
Anyway, I need to pay way more money to make it "proper bike".
