Purchased At:Sports Chalet
Strengths:Nice, smooth ride from steel. Cheap price. Insanely strong frame proves to be its downfall... Good value wheelset.
Weaknesses:Even with light street use, Shimano shifters are worse than nothing. Front deraillier stopped functioning and is unfixable. Rear need tuning constantly. ChroMoly frame is VERY VERY heavy. Lousy brake levers. No quick release in the rear. Seat is uncomfortable. Gripshift doesn't work very well.
Similar Products Used:Marin, Giant, Motiv
Bike Setup:Marin w/ Altus, Vetta saddle, WTB tires, and some other upgrades
Bottom Line:My advice is to stay away from this bike. I used it (its my dad's) for some light singletrack while my bike was being upgraded. The front shifter stopped working for some reason and nobody can seem to get it to work. I am forced to adjust the back shifter all the time to keep it from skipping all over the place. The brakes are spongy and unresponsive, but the wheels are decent and stay true.

There are better deals to be found... spend an extra $70, or even $50 and upgrade to an aluminum frame with Altus shifters and you will notice a world of difference from the crapola SIS.

Recomended: NO

Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $250.00
Purchased At:Jay Cyclery
Strengths:Good sturdy frame decent front shocks with relitively shallow travel, good basic shimano hardware setup - works just fine (if one treats it with a little care since this in not a $1000 downhill dual suspension bike with top-notch hardware) The seat is fine the rims are fairly strong.
Weaknesses:Prone to rust in seat stem, plastic pedals (replaced) V-Brakes work fine if you are under 200lb but for me being 6'4 and 210lb I whacked some shimano mech discs on. Now the darn thing can stop! This one is fairly heavy.
Similar Products Used:Previously owned road bike COMP-TA Centurion - a real nice piece of hardware, double-butted frame expensive rims etc.
Bike Setup:Shimano Deore front mechanical disc. Hayes Mech disc rear, MOZO RM front shocks Shimano SIS 7 cassette/derailleuir/s ASIS chromo seat stem Deore disc hubs STRATT Reaver tyres, expensive but great traction off-road.
Bottom Line:This bike is GOOD. It satisfies my needs for trail riding, downhill work and handles drops well. a good basic setup - mine has only marginally been upgraded and now it goes like a charm - the cheaper shimano componants work just fine. I hope you all find this review enlightening...

Strengths:Relatively light steel frame, decent brakes
Weaknesses:Can't get into gear. Components are crap.
Similar Products Used:Huffy, Murray
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:I hate this bike. I can't believe i bought this sad excuse for a mountain bike. I put about 20 miles on it the first day and this bike left alot to be desired. DO NOT BUY A MONGOOSE, spend an extra bill and get a real bike.

by the way I returned it the next day!

Favorite Trail:Ulanits, Brega
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $250.00
Purchased At:Madagascar
Strengths:Strong frame, sturdy cranks good front shocks (hardtail)
Got Shimano CV450 Slotted rotor & hydraulic calp for front hub superb stopping pwr all conditions.
Weaknesses:Rims, rear V-Brakes quite heavy - a big problem when licking air doing a drop-point pivot over an L2 slalom, I cant stress that one enough!
Similar Products Used:Giant 5657YU hardtail shock + dual Hayes Disc 7005 AL frame.
New 55ml Hyd resovoir.
Bike Setup:ProLine pedals + crank arms Shimano PRO70 gear system. M122 Cragar Fireball Rims with GR4-6 REM Hubs. Front Shimano CV450 disc set (Hydraulic, soon to add to rear hub) ProLine Mud Demon tyres anodised sealed rim sides.
Bottom Line:Damn good platform to upgrade - this series of bike has an extremely resiliant frame and can stand up to some extremely rough treatment. My Giant can't fair against it. This isn't really a mongoose anymore as virtually nothing excepth the frame is original.
