Submitted by hector salazar a Weekend Warrior from los angeles
Date Reviewed: September 15, 2003
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $1100.00
Strengths:Great frame with lots of heavy duty welds,
adjustable rear travel, front headtube adjustment
and 4 link suspension.
Weaknesses:The Psylo fork sucks. A Marzocchi EXR would have been better.
I am saving up for a Z1. The rear shock is too spongy, but I weigh 200 lbs.
Similar Products Used:Stinky by Kona is like the same bike but $500 more.
Pretty much, they are equipped the same--they both
get crappy front forks.
Bike Setup:Changed pedals and stem. But for the most part until I sell the Psylo, it remains stock.
Bottom Line:Nice bike, pimped out color, can handle some jumps and hasn't cracked yet.

Submitted by Jacob O'Neall a Downhiller from Eubank,Kentucky, USA
Date Reviewed: March 2, 2003
Favorite Trail:any thats rough and technical
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $800.00
Purchased At:Dick's Sporting Goods
Strengths:Efficiency, no brake-jacking, horst-link dropouts, around the BB main pivot makes suspension active
Weaknesses:my 2001 frame only works with e-type front deraillers(not really a problem until you look for ISIS bottom brackets to fit, since the bb shell measures 73mm) Truvativ makes a ISIS BB that fits, and solves the only problem I have.(thank you Truvativ)
Similar Products Used:Mongoose 2000 XR-850 no where near stock(sweet bike), Schwinn S-30 good bike, (currently upgrading everything)
Bike Setup:(This is a 2001 Black Diamond Valient)
2002 rockshox Psylo, WTB Motoraptor 2.4, Sun Mammoth rims/WTB Speed XC hubs, New Truvativ cranks, Kore Chain Reactor, Formula Activa mechanical disks
Bottom Line:A very good Freeride, light DH, and trail bike. My setup weighs about 31 or 32 pounds, very light for this type of bike. I have 5 inches of travel, front and rear, and the suspension is efficient, and never bobs excessivly, and is active under braking due to the Horst link drop-outs, and has very a good, progressive suspension performance. I've never bottomed the bike, and I am a agressive freerider, dowmhiller, urban rider and trailrider. The bike can handle anything a five-inch freerider should. I've done up to a 8 foot drop, landed it twice, then crashed on the third try(toasted my original rims) and the bike itself never creaked, or showed any signs of wear, and I've owned it since New Years' Day 2002. I got it for $800 on clearance at Dick's, I had been planning to order it from Bicycle Blowout.com for $1,250.00 and it still would have been worth the money at that price. I've upgraded it alot in the year and three months that I've owned it, and it compares to top freeride bikes from any company. This shows what a REAL Mongoose Pro is like, don't listen to anyone who says Mongoose is a bad company, I've got three Mongoose's, and yes one is a Wal-mart mongoose, and it's the bike that got me started in mountain biking in the first place. A top quality mountain bike, with good support from the company(from Mongoose Pro, not Pacific, they gave Mongoose the bad name to start with)
Buy this bike if you want a big-hit bike that pedals good, is light, and very durable with a good component spec.It definently deserves the 5 chili rating
