$1399.00 | | Purchased At: | Local bike shop | | Strengths: | Components are awesome on this bike. You get some good high end components with this bike. And the Forks are sweet on this bike. Able to switch from 100 to 120 quick and adjust on the fly which is very convenient. Going down hill at speeds of 30+mph, the bike handled great with tweaking of the suspensions, and stopped rapidly with the hayes hydro discs. These brakes are the best on the market, and stick by them all the way. I've tried many others but by far, these are the best! | | Weaknesses: | nothing | | Bike Setup: | mavic cross roc discs (tubeless). RaceFace cranks, time atac pedals, xtr rear der, xt front der, xt shifter, hayes hydro discs | | Bottom Line: | There is no bike out there that comes with these components for this kind of price PERIOD!! I LOOKED!!!!!. For the $$$$ you can't beat it, and Mongoose has been around for years, and I have never had problems with them. Matter of fact, I can remember when I was a kid riding my first Mongoose. No problems then, and no problems now! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1875.00 | | Strengths: | Components, value ; adjustibility of bike in suspension; pretty much a complete package. very little up grades are necessary. Swapping stem/ seatpost for a better fit are my only changes planned | | Weaknesses: | decals are lame, manufacturer owners manual offers no help whats so ever in setting bike up for different types of riders or conditions. I guess that comes with experience. Cockpit is a little tight. | | Similar Products Used: | no other 4" + suspension bikes tested. I graduated from a sugar 4 with full XTR to this bike. This is my first bike with suspension parts that can be adjusted with any degree of significance. Price comparisons with other bikes made me by the Mongoose. I feel that Mongoose is trying to re-establish after that whole Wal -Mart thing, and this is an underpriced bike loaded with top of the line components to win back riders. Other bikes would have the same front fork, and maybe some XTR, but would then have lame pedals and cheap wheelset, or $100.00 mechanical brakes instead of Hayes Hydraulics. For the money I could not find anything within $1000.00 of what this bike offers component wise. It has the type of suspension I was looking for with high end components. The only chance I feel I am taking is with the frame. I ride at 165 lbs (5'10") and will not likely put the amount of stress on the frame to ever damage it. If I do, Mongoose has a decent warranty and I will then test how responsive they are for problems. If all else fails, I figured I can go out and by a custom frame and swap components. As I ride more and more, and as technology progresses, I am heading in that direction anyways. | | Bike Setup: | Stock, minus the mongoose pro plastic decals (I removed) and the black stickers from the front fork( falling off by themselves).hayes hydraulics race face prodigy crankset sid XC(4.5" rear travel) Manitou Black Elite (4 -5 " front suspension), Cross roc UST disc wheelset with Huutchinso Scorpion tires, XTR rear derailleur, Time Attac pedals, kore posts, San Marco seat, LX shifters. The bike has the new adjustible headset which I have not yet adjusted. | | Bottom Line: | The bike handles very well. The steering is quick and sharp and it climbs good. The tires are giving a great hook up so far. They do really well on off camber terrain and have never spun out on me thus far on climbs. I haven't had a chance to really test them in wet conditions and I fear they will not shed well. The cockpit of the bike is taking alot of getting used to. I used to have a Sugar which always had me in the perfect body position for cranking. This is a different type of bike and I am in the process of changing my riding body positioning. I am going to get a setback seatpost and maybe play with the stem/ handle bars. I am going to make the handle bars narrower (we have alot of tight single track in Fla.) Ilike the fact that I have the only Mongoose around. I have never seen another rider on this bike. I am sure they are out there but it is nice not having the same bike as everybody else. The bike has performed great, the high end components are great. "Bonus"! I have been riding for 2.5 years and this is my third bike. I started with Gary Fischer Taasajara ($600 hardtail) then with a Sugar 4, which I put $1000 in up grades and new parts into, only to find myself wanting more travel and disc brakes and tubeless tires. This bike has everything I need for where I am at right now and my up grades should be at minimum for at least 1.5 years. Then I will be itching for a new bike. I would recommend this bike to anybody who is in the $1500 - $2500 price range. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Date Reviewed: December 29, 2001 | | Favorite Trail: | san gab | | Duration Product Used: | Less than 1 month | | Purchased At: | home | | Strengths: | Great frame geometry, for someone of my size, 6'3 it fits me perfect where other 20"'s+ don't, because of this I can manuver very easily and quickly. Moreso, the components that come with it like the rock shok adj sid are great very customisble and it hasnt blow up like some other i've tried when It's put at max pressure. The Manitou balck diamond elite is great with a quick and easy adj travel design. ALso, comes stock with all Shimano XTR drivetrains, some of the best in the business. The Hayes Hydro Discs are also top of the line. | | Weaknesses: | I hate clip in's, I suggest purchasing some kore lite platforms for it, they'll tear ya up if you slip but that rarely happens. No quick release set post clamp. The Manitou front shock may have some problems with it being too cushy I put the higher tension valve thingy in mine just too give me a little less rebound, but I also weigh 210 pounds, so it might not be neccesary for most. | | Similar Products Used: | too many too list | | Bike Setup: | Stock; except for the kore lite platforms and heavy kit for the front shock and of course a cyclometer and quick release setpost clamp. | | Bottom Line: | This is a kick a$$ bike with looks to spare. If you race, to play around on the singletracks on the weekend, this setup is very reliable and will take you to the next level. Most importantly it's a great price for the components that it comes with. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
