Favorite Trail:Lake Hope, Bob Evans
Duration Product Used:6 months
Purchased At:Roll
Strengths:Traction, cornering, rolling resistance, climbing
Weaknesses:None so far
Bike Setup:Niner SIR 9 SS, carbon fork, Laserdisc wheels, King headset, Stylo crank, Elixir brakes, Salsa carbon bars, EC90 post, Thompson stem
Bottom Line:Awesome tires. I run them on the rear with a WTB Prowler on the front. Great traction in the dry, medium to loose stuff in southern Ohio. Low rolling resistance is great for the fast trails, while the traction is great for the technical, climbing trails. A excellent all-around tire. Would recommend to anyone.

They climb well on hard dirt, loose dirt, over tree roots. they did slide a little bit on leaves but what dont side on leaves.

Weaknesses:a bit on the pricey side.

Favorite Trail:Pocahontas state park
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $30.00
Purchased At:maxxis.com
Strengths:GREAT all around tire. Works in all conditions here on the east coast. Central Va has tight twisty single track with leaves, rocks, roots, hard pack and loose over hard. Add mud and sand and you have most all conditions.
Weaknesses:As a generally purpose tire this is not the best in Mud.
Similar Products Used:Most all of the Maxxis line, Panaracer and WTB.
Bike Setup:I am running the 26x 2.1 Ignitor with the Exception casing and 120 TPI 62 durometer. It weights right around 525 grams. My bike is 5" x 5" all mountain Ventana El Ciclon. Pike 454 air U-turn on the front. Fox RP23 shock for the back. Running these tires on Mavic 717 rims.
Bottom Line:This is my go to tire. A great front or rear tire with great handling. TIRE PRESSURE IS KEY! Oh my goodness I can not believe how many bad reviews are on this site with no mention of what pressure was run. It makes ALL the difference. I am 185 plus gear and I run my tires at 28 to 31 pounds! I change pressure depending on Conditions! If it is dry and dusty I will go a bit higher to 31-32. If it is moist and wet with loose conditions I will go lower 28 to 29 pounds. It make such a difference. I like this tire best on the rear with an ADvantage or Advent on the front. It climbs well with very little breaking loose on wet roots and rocks. It steers well with very stable knobs and predictable drift and breaks loose with warning. If you are having trouble you aren't doing it right. a great tire for cross country and racing. NOT for Huckers.
Recommended for value and general trail use. Not the longest lasting on the back if you ride on pavement or lots of rocks.

Weaknesses:its a round profile low volume tire, so not super cushy, and some have complained of washout with cornering, but I feel like they really dig nice when cornering.

Bottom Line:I was impressed, read that some people really didnt like this tire before i even gave it a chance, it really suprised me. Fast, great bite, i railed it hard on single track switchbacks on hard dirt at 30 mph and it hooked right up. I was suprised. They will stay on the bike after all. Its for cross country riders and racers, too firm of a ride for the young bucks who like to huck themselves.

Favorite Trail:Teocali Ridge / Gunsight Pass
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $55.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:Great traction on limestone and hardpack when new. Light for a UST. Air volume.
Weaknesses:Desperately roughshod after about 30 days of riding. Extremely pricey for performance. Only good for about 30 days.
Similar Products Used:Everything.
Bike Setup:Maverick Durance / XO / DUC32 / some gears, bars, pedals, seat / Avid Ultimates 203s F/R
Bottom Line:I have yet to find the perfect tire. Michelin used to make great MTB tires, and they've expanded their lineup again. Might be time to try Miche's again. WTB have always disappointed in the precision traction department. Conti Verticals have too much sidewall play (USTs, anyway). Kenda Smallblocks are rear-only, but might match up nicely with a Weirwolf 2.4 up front.

It all depends on what you ride, I suppose, but Austin is everything from rocky ledges to slick limestone, to loamy pine, and lots of hardpack. Ah, and of course, the babyheads. More babyheads than a daycare full of Barbie Dolls.

Similar Products Used:WTB Weirwolf, Kenda Karma, Conti' Explorer, Twister, Mountain King to name a few
Bike Setup:Mongoose Canaan Elite, stock except pedals and wheels
Bottom Line:I thought this might be my tire nirvana, but no. I'm running a 2.1 Ignitor on the back, traction is okay on hardpack but terrible on anything else from the day I put it on. I'm running it tubeless at 25-30psi where I think the low pressure helps it grip better than it would otherwise. Not a high volume tire, the Kenda Karma 2.0 has a bigger volume and worked great (also tubeless) until it was slick! Back to the the Weirwolf and Conti's for me, they grip much better for the conditions here.

Bottom Line:If you like to rag your bike hard, don't buy these. If you're looking for fast rolling xc tires then give them a look. For my winter riding these are coming straight off or I might end up in hospital (again!) No problem with the rear end apart from traction, but the front end will bite you soon enough if you're not careful. Basically I'm too scared to continue using them this side of summer. Bottom Line:The exception series 2.10 is sensitive to tire pressure as

rocky surfaces. With less tire pressure (25 psi in my case),
depending on rider weight, the tire handles much better and
still seems to have fairly low rolling resistance.

Purchased At:Harbour Country Bike
Strengths:Good looks and craftsmanship, knobs are well-spaced for mud-shed, yet side knobs are great for cornering in loose dirt/gravel/rocks. Very light for a 2.3 tire IMO. Large air volume in the casing means you can run slightly lower pressure for more comfort and control, plus to have a bigger contact patch. I have 2.3s on front and rear. Awesome tires so far!
Weaknesses:Price? Onlt because I paid too much and didn't shop around first. Harbour Country Bike.Com SUXXX.

- Grip, amazing.
- Comfort, extra width makes any drops/hops much more confortable.
Weaknesses:None so far - haven't been using for very long, but I doubt anything major will appear to detract from the greatness of this product.

No harder to pedal than the fast-rolling 2.10" Crossmark, with amazing grip. Hops/Rollovers/Drops are comfortably cushioned by the extra width - and the extra grip is absolutely confidence inspiring. Sheds mud well also.

Bottom Line:I have always ran Panaracer Fire XC but wanted to try MAXXIS. I picked up the Larson TT at the LBS and tried it on the front. The knobbies are to close together to use it for a front tire so to the rear it went.. So then I picked up an Ignitor and plopped it on... I have to say, MAXXIS tires are pretty light and with them both pumped to 60 psi, they roll fast! So far I like my setup. I have ridden it twice and am happy with MAXXIS so far.

Strengths:Low rolling resistance, light weight, slow tread wear, excellent cornering traction.
Weaknesses:None
Similar Products Used:Specialized Roll X, Schwalbe Fat Albert, IRC Mythos
Bike Setup:Mavic 317 rims, laced to XT hubs
Bottom Line:It is a good all around tire. It is light weight, and rolls very quickly. It has great braking, climbing, and cornering grip. It also has slow tread wear, so it would be a great all around, cruising/racing mountain tire. Don't rec for downhill racing.

Tire pressure is critical to get best performance. For dry hard pack, you can run 40 psi. I ran tire pressure 45 psi, and I went through the first turn only to lose grip & face planted. I continued to run at this high pressure, and it was a scary tire. It felt as if I was riding on ice. I let out some air, and run between 30-35 psi. If you weigh about 140-160, this would be a great psi to run. There is loads of grip, it is comfortable, and I never received a pinch flat. At 25 psi, it is so much cushier, but I had problems with pinch flats. Overall, once you find the right psi for your weight & riding style, it is a great all arounder. Would rec for a mud tire.

Strengths:Low Rolling resistance, Grippy in the corners
Weaknesses:Low volume tire, need to run at lower PSI, but at risk for pinch flats
Similar Products Used:Specialized Roll X S works, Schwalbe Little Albert, IRC Mythos
Bike Setup:Specialized FSR Stumpie, Kona CC
Bottom Line:They are great all around tires for hard pack, loose over hard pack, medium terrain, and rocks. They are a lower volume tire, so pressure needs to run lower (25-40 psi) to get maximum contact with ground.

I experimented with higher pressures (45-55 psi, weight 155 lbs), and it is a scary tire! There is absolutely no grip at all. In fact, first turn I went straight down, face planted, and banged the knee hard. I was pretty pissed, but was determined to finish my ride. Everywhere on the trail, it felt like I was riding on ice (especially the loose over hard pack). After a mile or two, I decided to lower the pressure to 35 psi. It was night and day difference!

The tire still had low rolling resistance, but was very grippy in the climbs, loose over hard pack/medium, hooked up in the corners. I was smiling from ear to ear. Compared to the IRC mythos, which is a high volume tire (minimum PSI 40), the ignitors had reduced rolling resistance, but hooked in the climbs, corners, and rocks just as easily. The tread is very durable, and the hard pack trails haven't cut into the tread (unlike the Roll X's). It is great over rocks, but doesn't shed mud well. Great all around tire for western trails.

Strengths:I'm using the UST version and I've found these tires to be very good at overall traction and cornering.
Weaknesses:The casing leeks air and causes the rubber to bubble up. I've been through at least 5 tires, and each time they only last a few rides. This is a major product defect.
Bike Setup:99 Klein Attitude Race with 2006 XT components

Strengths:They may be good if your riding in a straight line on hardpack.
Weaknesses:These tires came on my new bike. I have road a HT bike for over 10 years and now have a FS bike. While I do not have a lot of time on these tires, I'll have to say (with other reviewers) that they do NOT hold the line well in a turn. The front tire washes out even when you do not take a turn too fast. (More below)
Similar Products Used:A few different mtb tires...
Bike Setup:FS, Sram X9, Juicy 7's, Rock Shox Reba 07.
Bottom Line:I'm on my home training trail, quicksilver park in SJ. Been there numerous times w/my HT and now getting used to my FS.

I take a right turn going slightly downhill on a fire road w/loose gravely soil. I feel the front tire loosing grip and before I know it, I'm on the ground. The front end of the bike washed out and I'm down. Nice sized gash to my right forearm.....go to emergency room and I'm out with stiches after 3.5hrs...

I'm changing the front tire before my next ride. This review may be premature as I have only ridden the tire a handful of times, but I'm not a beginning Mt biker and I know which component failed my with my last spill.

Make your own choices, this tire may be great for certain types of conditions. I'll say that it's not an optimal tire for the North California trails.

Similar Products Used:Panaracer Fire XC's, Panaracer Smoke/Dart, Kenda Psychos, etc.
Bike Setup:Ibex Asta X7, now with Pana Fire XC's. Were also tried on a home-built SS
Bottom Line:These came with the bike, the only part I was somewhat disappointed with. The tires first seemed somewhat quick and responsive on the packed dirt, until I hit roots and was sliding all over no matter the psi. Hitting rocks was unpredictable, and I was sliding on turns with loamy pine needles where I never was with other tires, with the rear tire slipping constantly. I had a very difficult ride with these same conditions in the wet, and felt out of control. However to be fair, they were decent in dry gravelly conditions, and a bit faster than my Fire XC's. If you live where it is wet, soft, rooty or rocky, I would avoid these tires.

I just went from the 2.35 to the 2.1 on my bike for a race at ACT's Sparrow Hill and these tyres roll faster than most others, and on the smooth packed winding flowy single trail of Sparrows, I could not get these to let go to the point I felt I was back on my motorbike at the race track. The side walls seem thin but after 2 years of riding these tyres (into my second set) I have not had a single puncture. I run them around 35-40 psi and this seems to suit me and my riding style.

Bottom Line:I put these on a week after buying my Reign. The Air Lites that were fitted felt and handled very poorly.
The Ignitors felt great from the moment they were fitted.
I've now done 500 kilometres mainly on pea gravel, hard packed clay and sand. I've had no punctures(touch wood)even though I run them at 25 psi. These are great tires,
I haven't found their limit yet and I've really been trying. Tight single trail with pea gravel over hard packed clay, sprinkled with gum nuts, tree roots and boulders. No worries mate. I ride harder and faster and these tyres just stick like glue. Like riding on rails.
Yes they do flick off mud, but that's what you want. As for wear, a little on the back is all I've noticed. I don't skid into corners or spin my back wheel so I expect at least 2,000 kilometres out of one set. That's not bad value.

Bottom Line:A great loose terrain tyre. Given the sandy trails around the Sydney basin they have kept me upright and given me good traction in corners and steep climbs where the surface is less than stable. They are now 2 enduro races old and blocks are holding up well, no real visible wear. Not convinced they are the fastest or lightest tyre on the market - they aren't at their best when trying to grind it out on an open fire trail. But, for an all-round performer when you want to push hard with confidence on loose or sandy singletrack I'd give them the thumbs up.

Bottom Line:Great tire for the front end. I have only washed it out once on a very loose gravel corner(pilot error). I tend to run a fairly low pressure in the front(28-30psi) which brings all the knobs into play for hard braking and I am constantly surprised at how good the traction is. Also I have never had a flat on the front. This tire has lasted a year so it seems good value for the front. However the rear one only lasted a couple of months. The central knobs wore down very quickly, rendering it all but useless for climbing anything that wasn't dry rock or bitumen.

Bottom Line:This review is for the 2.1 eXCeption version. I have the 1.95 too, but the extra volume of the 2.1 makes them much plusher in rough conditions and they roll the same.

These are a fantastic all-round, intermediate, mixed conditions XC race tire! If you've got to race in conditions where there's a bit of everything from mud, to gravel, wet, dry these tires are an excellent choice. They seem to work in all conditions equally well, cornering and stopping amazingly while still rolling quite well. Offering a good mix of control and speed they are particularly impressive on gravel and loose stuff.

I find I can go 'mental' every time I race on Ignitors!! Get a set of Larsen TT's and Medusa'a too and you'll be totally sorted for racing in any conditions.

Strengths:This is a review of the 29er version of the Maxxis Ignitor. Good air volumn that helps ease the fear of pinch flating on rocky terrain. Light for the size. Good traction when really pushed in turns. Rolls very well.
Weaknesses:Lacks climbing traction and braking traction on loose and loose over hardpack.
Similar Products Used:Kenda Klaw XL, Conti Vapor & WTB NanoRaptor
Bike Setup:Soulcraft "Holy Roller" 29er Singlespeed.
Bottom Line:I do really like this tire for our Southern Nevada terrain which is is a good mix of harpack, loose over hardpack, gravel, rocky and volcanic rock trails. I have tried the other tires mentioned above in the 29er version and the Ignitor has been my overall favorite. It rolls really well and provides good preditable traction on various surfaces. I especially want to point out how well it hooks up when pushed hard in singletrack downhill turns which is important when trying to make up as much ground as possible when racing a singlespeed. The Conti Vapor was equally good when pushed hard through the turns but it lacks air volumn and is prone to pinch flatting unless the air pressure is so high that it tends to bounce like a basketball. The Kenda Klaw doen't roll as well but has superior braking and climbing traction The WTB rolls well but doesn't hold traction on loose or gravel covered hard pack which is common here in the las vegas area.

Overall the Ignitor is my favorite 29er tire. I have ridden a friends Albert in the 29er version but it was for a short distance. It did handle well in fast downhill turns but I didn't have the opportunity to give it a fair evaluation on such a short ride.

I'd highly recommend the Ignitor to anyone riding a 29er.
