Bottom Line:
This is a super fast, light, durable wheelset. I ride very aggresive and take these wheels through a lot of abuse. I only have had to true them up once after the first ride and no problems since. The wheels are super stiff and really do a good job of keeping you on your line. Very fast accelleration and great handling. Very sexy looking

Bottom Line:
Have raced them on Snake Creek, Quachita Challenge, Cohutta 100, etc. here in the South without problem. I am 200lb and tend to ride lightly over stuff, avoid hard hits, and never huck. The super stiff design and custom spokes will keep me from wrenching on them myself. Can't just replace a poke at whim - know what you are doing or have a good mechanic who does. Have ridden on pretty hard stuff without problem so far. Red hubs are pretty sexy. I would not use for big drops or downhilling.

Everyone has there opinion but I think this is a killer wheelset. I am 6'-3" 220 lbs plus some loaded on the bike and bomb pretty hard and do the occasional race including Sea Otter and Downieville Classic (I think that is a good test) I have had zero issues with this rim and absolutely love the way it looks and rides. If you ride hard and want a stiff strong light wheelset this is it!
I have had none of the issues other people are complaining about.

Spokes - don't darn break a Mavic Spoke on this system. The use a type of spoke that they will no longer support..Unless that is you want to buy 12 of them at a time, in each size.....at $6.00 each. A call to Mavic will not help, they are stubborn about not selling direct or sending replacement products on warrenty, so once again if you break a spoke your out nearly $100 bucks in repair cost. Unless you are lucky enough to find a shop that has some - I am in LA, so you can imagine that I should have been able to locate one - no such luck
Bottom Line:
Stay with a wheel system that uses parts that are readily available or maybe one day the knuckleheads at Mavic will open up the door for "warrenty" type sales to prop up their propriatary designs.

Strengths:
Extremely stiff and light. Spin up faster than any wheel I've ever used. Specialized S-Works tubeless tires mount very well on these rims.
Weaknesses:
They squeak at the spoke crossings when dirty. A simple spoke flawsing with a clean rag solves the problem. Otherwise, need to have the rear free-wheel serviced every 3-6 months if you ride these frequently, with fresh minerial oil. I have heard they need new parts in the hub body afer a while, but have not needed this yet.
Similar Products Used:
Shimano hubs with mavic rims.
Bike Setup:
2007 Specialized S-Works Epic. XTR, Reba Team.
Bottom Line:
These came on the bike I purchased used. With the spoke flawsing and minerial oil servicing, they are definitely higher maintenance and a bit more worrisome than most wheels. The spokes seem to be under extremely high tension, which keeps me awake at night imagining they will explode 20 miles into the back country. But the performance is significantly higher than a conventional spoked wheel at 300 grams heavier. I suspect I'll be dissatisfied with other wheels going forward.

Bottom Line:
I am not happy with thees wheel at all. They might be light and stiff but I can not stand the creaking noise any longer. It comes from the spoke hub interface and I have tried everything to silence them. Lubing the hub spoke interface makes it go away for a few rides but this is intolerable on a top end wheel set. The first set I had all the paint came off the front hub(at this price they should be anodized)and they were replaced but the creaking came back. I have had 3 sets of cross max wheels XL, Enduro and the SLR is the first one to creak.

I was quite very satisfied with this wheelset right after I used it... very fast-rolling wheelset... I also took note that even if they're specced as XC-racing wheelsets, they're stock equipment on All Mountain top-end 07 Cannondale Prophets and Lapierre Zesty 914's. So I guess it'll still hold up to my 150mm travel Heckler. I'm primarily a weekend trailwarrior and I seldom do jumps. I do hope Mavic would look into this creaking problem... I was planning on getting another Crossmax (SL) but I might have to postpone it until I get closure on the creaking noise... Otherwise, I'll be getting an XTR...

Creaking noise. The rear hub design has set the spokes to close (touching)at the cross over points. This produces an intolerable creaking noise.

Bottom Line:
Mavic need to make a modifaction to the hub ASAP and put right this issue with all those that have brought these wheels and are experiencing this problem. My low rating purely reflects this issue, which is letting down what is normally an excellent wheelset.

I purchased these wheelset a month ago to raplace my old XTR's WH-M965 wich had been my "ride any where" wheels for over 3000 trail miles and are still true and performing like the first day. Last week, the freehub stared skipping on me every time I pounded on the pedals. Took the rear wheel back to my LBS, where they replaced the freehub body. Last sunday it happened again. I had to walk back to the parking lot and missed a perfect rideable sunny day. I haven't had any freehub related issues since I got rid of my Crossmax XL's three years ago because of the same problem. I'm going back to Shimano XTR's.
