Strengths:frikkin' beast. impossible to warp or break
Weaknesses:weight, if you care
Similar Products Used:sunrims 07
Bike Setup:maxxis dominion
Bottom Line:these will not break. if anything, the spokes will go first, which mine did and need replacement, but if you have a flat you wont even notice when you get to the bottom of a rock garden. these rims are highly recommended, and cant be beat for quality and strength.

Favorite Trail:All of 'em
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $75.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:Cheap as chips, harder than a soviet's hammer, no fancy design, it's really light for it's price range and applications.
Weaknesses:Weight and blandness of the design (I know some of you guys prefer crossmax design/pattern but i prefer 729 minimalist approach).
Similar Products Used:various dt swiss wheels, cheap alex rims and really expensive mavic SLR.
Bike Setup:Currently using ex729 on ringle jumping flea hubs with dt swiss spokes. Kenda Nevegal tires 2.6 on front and 2.3 for rear.
Bottom Line:It's cheap, performs as good if not better than rims 4-5 times it's price and seriously outstanding value for money.

Favorite Trail:A Line in Whistler
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Purchased At:the path
Strengths:stays true and I never get pinch flats
my spokes stay tight
Light for a DH rim.
Weaknesses:none
Bike Setup:2008 V10
Bottom Line:I weigh 230lbs on I beat the hell out of these rims. I have cased a lot of jumps and I have hucked to a flat landing many times and they stay true. I also do a lot of DH at Mammoth mtn and I have also taken these to Whistler and Northstar. This rim is truly sick, it would take a lot to destroy these. If you want a fast, strong, setup get these with the DT440 hubs and Kenda Nevegal 2.7 huge tire in the front and a 2.5 in the rear. Nevegals run very large compared to other tires and they also roll really fast. I have a lot of friends and they are pinch flatting all the time. Some of them have switched their rims and went from getting them on every ride to just once in a while. I havent pinch flatted yet with my setup. This rim should be the standard on all DH and freeride bikes. Oh my bike tends to pull ahead of everyone else without me even pedaling, but maybe its just my weight, either way I love my wheel set.

Favorite Trail:Anything steep
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $80.00
Purchased At:chainreactioncycles/
Strengths:Tuff, able to withstand casing a 20ft double twice with only a slight buckle, which was fixable.
Weaknesses:heavy, if you're going to use them for xc riding:)
Similar Products Used:Bombshell Fat Daddy, Sun Singletrack
Bike Setup:Patriot Lt, Fox Van RC, Domain 318's, Hayes Brakes
Bottom Line:These do add considerable weight to your bike compared to all mountain rims such as Sun Singletracks, but in terms of stiffness and strength, they are probably the lightest of their kind (available aftermarket rims).
There are definately lighter rims available for DH racing or lighter/smoother riders, but at least these are the last rims you'll need to buy for a good few years.

Buy these if you don't mind having fairly heavy wheels in exchange for all out stoutness - if you plan to ride with carelessness and neglect for your components, these are the ticket!

Duration Product Used:2 Years
Purchased At:Dodge City Cycles - great guys
Strengths:Absolutely unbreakable
Round as the day they went on
Weaknesses:None, unless you hate France
Similar Products Used:Lighter Mavic stuff, whatever junk came on it from the store
Bike Setup:SC Bullit, 888R, 5th L, Maxxis rubber, bling saddle from .243
Bottom Line:I am a Mavic convert. A little story: riding hard at Kicking Horse, I screwed my line up big-style, lofted off the trail and landed from about 20 ft in the air onto very sharp, big, angular alpine rocks. While I absolutely toasted the tubes and bounced waaay off the bike, the rims were not even a tiny bit out of true. Unreal. Had it not been for these rims and my Rockgardn Flak Jacket (brilliant armour, go buy one), I'd be writing this from a hospital bed instead of slouched in my living room. I would have children with these rims if it wasn't so very, very wrong. Worth every cent.

Strengths:Very strong, very wide so no flats, looks, durability
Weaknesses:Heavy - but what do you expect for a amazing rim?
Similar Products Used:Just stock rims
Bike Setup:Custom
Bottom Line:Very good rim, Ive used it for street - like riding down steps and jumps them and has been fine. I have also used it for down hill and has been fine. I dont think about 'is my rim buckled' ever because I trust is so much. I have used 2.3 tires with these which is the minimum width I think and have never had a puncture. The stickers with the product name stay on and look good but simple.
I would buy these again for the kind of riding I do but wouldn't if you do cross country ect as too heavy.

Favorite Trail:Freight Train
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $200.00
Purchased At:lbs
Strengths:This rim has surprised me from day one with its strength, durability and lack of maintenance. Its also uber light compared to what I used to run (doublewides).
Weaknesses:Its quite a bit heavier than some of the newer comparable rims, but I'm not much of a gram counter.
Similar Products Used:doubletrack, doublewide, mavic f219d, alex dm24, mag30
Bike Setup:banshee scream with a modern, but burly build. (Totem, codes, block 8 everything, XO)
Bottom Line:I bought this wheel 2 and a half years ago pre-built from my local shop and since then I've never had to tighten a spoke and they're still PERFECTLY true. They're a little lighter than my doubletrack which has also served me well. I ride twice a week on some pretty gnarly terrain with a few hucks, and this rim has taken it and asked for more. Sure, they're a bit pricey but nothing compares to having a wheel you trust 100%. Now I just worry about my tubes.

p.s. In the time I've owned this rim, I've NEVER pinched a front tube.

Bike Setup:03 p.3 dirt jump set up. 4by race set up. transition top fr setup
Bottom Line:reliable. these rims are tough and i dont think twice. these rims were bought on a velocity front 20mm and xt rear bolt on axle new in january 05 and i havn't had any problems. they bend a bit but that happens to all rims. and i case once in a while but i havn't trued the front ever and its strait as an arrow. the rear has a slight hop from a 12 foot drop case on my ht. i switch the wheels from bike to bike and all my friends have these rims. they've all had no problems. the paint on them is so easy to clean mud and dried dirt off. very distinctive color aswell. my tire bead always locks in very tightly and i have done an entire race run with both tires flat after landing on sharp rocks on a drop. i've ridden other runs with dual flats and my rims are fine. don't ever get a dt swiss rim because they flatspot like crazy. my friend rode one day with one in the back and got 3 major flat spots and i rode with flats and no damage done to my rims! theyre just as strong as a doubletrack but alot lighter. i have cracked a silly stype on the joint after a few mins. these rims have an amazingly strong weld. theyre cheap too. these rims can last 5 years and are around 100-140 cad. per rim so thats like buying a 25 dollar rim each year.

Weaknesses:none found yet
Similar Products Used:singlewides, singletracks, 321's, 521's
Bike Setup:Ellsworth Specialist, DJ1, raceface, mrp guide, xt rear hub and ringle 20mm front built on mavic 729's
Bottom Line:Rebuilt the wheelset for my street hardtail with a set of 729's half way through the summer and it was the biggest difference ive ever noticed by just changing over rims. The specialist which is allready crazy stiff felt even stiffer, they eliminated virtually all flex and vibration that ive noticed with other builds, and they handle way better than the singlewides they replaced, and are lighter (or at least feel lighter) than any dh/fr rim ive used to date. I thought when they made the 321's they couldnt do much better,, but this rim basically is the 321 just on a diet, without giving up any strength. Untill mavic raises the bar again i wouldnt waste my time building anything else on my bike. They are half expensive, but as usuall u get what you pay for.

Weaknesses:Dent soo much, after one season I have cracked this rim in 2 places and it is untrue.
Similar Products Used:Sungletracks, rhynolights, doubletracks, mag 30s, trailpimps
Bike Setup:turnere dhr 888 gustavs, ect.
Bottom Line:I bought this set of rims because i thought 729s were light and strong, turns out they are mediocre at best in these categorys. In my opinion if you downhill just get singletracks, they are like 30 bucks and u can rebuild them when they crack, they are light and virtually as strong as the 729s. If you want a strong rim get somethign like atomlabs or doubletracks. The ex 729 doesnt help any specific category of riding, they arnt strong for freeride nor are they light for downhill.

Strengths:phenominal stregnth to weight ratio, ie: doesnt weigh much at all, it mainly depends on which tyres and hubs you choose to go with.
They look really chic, good tyre profile with 2.3s or higher.
Weaknesses:not great for street riding, the bulk of their stregnth lies mainly in the lateral
regeon (sidewards stregnth) which is great for fast downhill stuff with lots of berms and jumps. rims like the 721 (new 521) are better for street coz you
get more vertcal stregnth.

Bottom Line:I'm a big dude, and got tired of spending money on weak products. On my first cross country bike (Giant Iguana), I had a flat every three rides, and I had to replace two tires, both from and back, and a boat load of tubes. After using the 729's for a year, I have had one flat on the front tire, and I've taken my bike to Diablo, Snow Shoe, and Winter Green. And as some of you may know the rocks at the shed can be unforgiving. I run a little more pressure then I'd like, but if it prevents some pinch flats I am all over it. Any ways, these rims rock, you can't go wrong, even if you are a big guy/girl that just rides cross country, it will make rides more enjoyable, and lets face it, if weight was an issue, you'd probably diet a little more.

Bike Setup:IBIS Cousin It (tandem), XT shifters, XTR derailleurs, LX cranks, 11-34 cassette, White Brothers TM 1.0, Hope Mono6ti (205mm rotors) front and rear and Phil Wood Disk/Mavic EX 729 wheels with a Continental Vertical Pro Tection2.3 on the front and a Continental Survival Pro Tection 2.3 on the rear
Bottom Line:You might ask: Why is a guy who describes himself a cross country rider reviewing this DH rim? Freed riders, dirt jumpers and down hillers are developing the next generation of tandem mountain bike parts. Thanks guys!

Big and wide, disk specific, welded seams, massively thick around the spoke holes; I can’t see how these rims could ever be damaged on a tandem.

Purchased At:CBO- The best local shop!
Strengths:No doubt the strongest rim I have ever ridden. I'm 300 Lbs and slam on these rims. You can run directly into objects such as curbs & the rim eats it up. I have tried vigourously to knock these rims out of true- Not going to happen if you get them built up right. The spoke holes have bombproof eyelets & less important, the rims look hot as hell. Build up some mavic 729's if you want unsurpassed strength for the heart of your bike.
Weaknesses:1.55 lbs a piece for the rim only. Although weight in your wheelset can slow you down substantaly, the 3.1 lbs is well worth the abuse that I can dish to the 729 with no ill effect.
Similar Products Used:Mavic 225, 517, 823. A few of the Sun line up and of course all the stock chinese wheels I tacoed when I was a kid.
Bike Setup:Built up piece by piece- Schwinn delta 88 ISO drive frame w/ SID rear shock w/ lockout. 2004 Super T PRO 7". EX-729's built with DT swiss spokes, Ringhle 20mm hub-running intense FRO 2.5" tires. XT drive trian. XTR shifter/Brake combos. Hayes MX-1 w/ 8" rotors front & rear.
Bottom Line:Beefy beyond belief.

Weaknesses:God damn, themz are heavy!!!
Similar Products Used:Shimanos, ZACs, other Mavics
Bike Setup:SC Heckler, decked out
Bottom Line:These rims have taken some sick beatings in the last month. I haven't downhilled them but they have taken quite a few drops. Plus in the getting acquainted to my bike period. I have taken some awkward spills and the bike has flipped and tumbled with and w/o me. Somehow, these rims just have nothing more than 1 scratch on them. I'm used to lighter rigs so I wish for a lighter wheelset. These are the heavyest rims I ever ridden and it makes climbs a touch more difficult. But coming down, I fear nothing...

Strengths:Strength to weight ratio, looks
Weaknesses:a coz to get tires on (NBX 2.3) but then that means they dont come of easy, so not so bad.

Bike Setup:Trek Bruiser HT, 03 DJ3s, 729s on DMR revolvers, Deore hydro discs, truvative gigapipe bb and fsa Alpha drive cranks.
Bottom Line:They rims are the perfect combination of strength and weight, they are very, very strong, yet arent stupidly heavy. They look awesome with an all black build.
Its a bit silly of mavic to rename all the rims this year, but this is a cracking product from mavic, as is the D321.

Get some!

Strengths:Super strong. I have had numerous casings and dodgy landings on this rim and stays true. Not the slightest bit buckled or flatted. Awesome. Looks great and is nice and wide which widens up your tires. I have heard that they are almost identical to DeeMax rims!!!
Weaknesses:It's a bit heavy but the strength makes up for the weight
Similar Products Used:Zac19- what i had before. Absolute crap. Ok for front wheel though
Bike Setup:2002 Craftworks FRM125
Bottom Line:This is the best rim i have ever owned. I dont think i will buy a different rim to this again. (thats if i ever need to!). If you are a downhiller or freerider, looking for a bombproof rim that will last you forever, look no further than the Mavic EX729

Strengths:strong, 36 mm wide - it's the best thing do a rim anti-snakebite: make it wider!, and supersexi look.
Weaknesses:a bit heavy after my rhino lites, but also stronger
Similar Products Used:all of the sun line (mammoth, rhino lite, singletrack, singlewide, doubletrack, etc.) and d521
Bike Setup:bullit, 5th element, boxxer, xt/9.0, roox, formula, etc.
Bottom Line:it is a mavic d321, just with another colour adonization. just the name changed. that's why it's the best dh/freeride rim ever made. i suggest everyone, who will make a strong, reliable wheelset at a reasonable weight. i had it with roox jimmy b hubs built, so they are quiet heavy (the rearhub is alone 550 gramm!) but undestroyable.
5 flamin' chilis for the best rim i ever had.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Purchased At:SpinCity
Strengths:Strong, strong, and oh did I say strong...
Weaknesses:Heavy...but not near as heavy as other comparable rims for the intended use
Similar Products Used:None really...Had Mavic XC rims
Bike Setup:'03 Kona Dawg, DJIII, King Hubs
Bottom Line:Well I've ridden these rims twice now so this is an early report. But what impressed me so far is I took about a 3 foot drop in muddy conditions and landed with my front wheel completely sideways..I fully expected the rim to fold (I'm 210lbs and was almost over the handlebars) but it didn't...Not even out of true. Thanks to Mike at SPinCity for building a bombproof wheelset!
