It lasted a good time. It is semi strong i guess. Did a 2m drop to flat on a hardtail with these rims and they survived. Cheap now?
Weaknesses:
Not a very good rim. It is made to only fit up to a 2.2 tire.(It works with a 2.5 i guess) Not very strong. Bends easily and spokes come off.

Bottom Line:
Not a very good rim. I liked when it was on my bike but then it cracked at the weld and there vas a big flat spot on it from a jump that is not very large. I had some good times when it was on my bike and its a good rim for dirt jump and street but I use my bike more as a freeride hardtail.

It can take the hits quite easily and its not to heavy. it looks nice, i had it on a hard tail doing drops and urban it doesn't buckle easily or if it does not a great deal...
Weaknesses:
I found the spokes were always coming loose even in my front wheel i need to constantly tighten them. theres a bit of flex in the wheel when i pump the cranks and in combination with my chain stay flexing it rubs on my chain guide. oh and since the rim gets thin out to the edges if you hit it at a bad angle the rim will fold in easily i found to my dismay :< .
great rim light, durable. Best for XC or soft tail use i believe

Too much flex, back 2.35 tire rubs against my frame on my Nomad, Spokes come loose too often and break easily, high maintenance, needs to be serviced every 2-3 months.
Bike Setup:
Nomad, Fox DHX 5.0 coil, Fox 36 Vanilla RC2 fork, Truvativ Holzfeller Cranks with E13 Chain guide, Mavic 321 with DT Swiss 240 Rear and 340 front, Kenda Nevegal tires 2.5 front and 2.35 rear single ply sticky. Sram XO and Avid Juicy brakes with 185mm rotors front and rear. Thompson X4 stem with Easton Havoc Bars, King headset, Thompson seat post, WTB Pure V seat.
Bottom Line:
I'm a very aggressive rider, I always hit that ladder drop at Whittier and all other jumps I see. I also ride extremely fast. I go through a lot of parts and this is my second Nomad because I messed up the pivots on the first one, Santa Cruz just sent me a new frame. I also broke the cranks that came with my bike and had to upgrade to the downhill ones. These rims came on my bike and I've hated them since the very first day. At first I thought the reason for the loose spokes was that the spokes where just getting settled but thats not the case since it keeps happening all the time. Also this rim has too much lateral flex such as when I bunny hop or jump the wheel goes into my frame. Its mostly the back wheel since thats the one that gets most of the abuse. One thing that I have noticed is that the rim still remains straight. I'm also a larger rider at 215lbs so that makes a difference too. These might be more ideal for a smaller rider who weighs about 160lbs and who dosent like to go big since the wheel will just give instead of getting bent. Also surprisingly I've never had any pinched flats with this rim. Personally I just don't feel safe on these rims and they have caused me to hold back from trying certain stunts such as hucking. As soon as I get the cash I plan on getting Deemax wheel set. If your a bigger rider who likes to jump look elsewhere. If you need proof you could check out my video clip just listen for the tire rub when I hit the ladder drop: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oM3PVtDq3Mw

Mavic 321 rims with a never heard of front 20mm hub TX Quando and rear XT M756 hub. I bought it as a wheelset. The 321 is a strong but pretty lightweight rim, as it weighs in at 570 grams according to Mavic. They stay true on my XC bike which is great because I hate truing rims and you can take small 2-3 footers and not have to worry about them. The rims are probably stronger than my bike frame.
Weaknesses:
The 321 Disc are pretty narrow for a so-called freeride rim. I have a set of 2.20 Bontranger tires on them and they fit fine but I can't see anyone slapping 2.5 or 2.7 tires on them, they seem too narrow. I'd get a different rim for those unless you have lots of health insurance.
Similar Products Used:

Bottom Line:
If you want a good XC or trailbike wheelset that you wont need to baby if you ride through rock gardens or ocassional drops, get the 321's. They dont weigh that much and they are super strong. You wont win any XC races for sure, but the strength and durability is worth it. These are great wheels to get for replacing those stock wimpy rims that came with your bike. Like I stated above, the rims are too narrow for 2.5 and up tires, but for 1.9 to 2.35, these are the ticket.

When i brake the tire starts to spin and tube would tear off around the valve. In just one month, i spended something around 40€ in XC(4*3€) and DH tubes(3*7€). This rim is wide enough for all kink of XC tires, FR and DH. Now i use a 2.5 tire on my XC bike for enduro or winter rides!

The only arguement you my have with these, is the 321 versus say a wider rim for tech reasons.A wider rim may put more rubber on the road but it seems to me it would also square off the tire a bit.And might make it more twitchy conering. So if you are doing research/buliding a bike.or just looking for new hoops you can trust Mavic. Not for crosscountry.Maybe not for xtream freeride or dh. Just for the rest of us.

Uh, well..its strength! These are the strongest 36-hole rims I've ever owned. I've folded and flat spotted Doublewides and Mammoths with my extreme abuse riding style, and yet these have never folded. Maybe knocked out of true on occasion, but never broken. Gives any tire a big, wide footprint and they are significantly lighter than Doublewides as well.
Weaknesses:
Removing a tire from this rim is a bear, so pack metal tire levers. This is because the lip of the rim is flared to keep the tire on during a puncture. Also buy the 321 rims and hubs separately instead of buying the DeeMax wheelset and save yourself $250.
Similar Products Used:
Sun Mammoth (folded after two months) Sun Doublewide (flat spotted after the first huge drop and progressively got worse) Sun Rhyno Lite (didn't last a week)
Bike Setup:
Read below.
Bottom Line:
Just like my Profile cranks, these rims have lasted so long that I just keep transferring them from frame to frame. My first set was bought as a DeeMax complete wheelset for my Bullit. After the Bullit failed, I put these wheels on my Minuteman.
The second set of 321's I built myself. I mounted them on Hadley hubs and put them on my Super-8 a year ago.
Both sets have been going strong. I've broken spokes off of the factory wheelset. Aside from that, no problems other than a truing every few weeks. The Mavics are not cheap, but I still haven't ridden a stronger rim. And we all know how yellow rims make your bike .2 seconds faster. :^)

I've taken these rims to above and beyond where my previous rims have collapsed. (urban drop-offs onto concrete - no flat spots, downhill in Plattekill, NY - sidewalls don't fold under, completely crushes anything in it's way on the quick singletrack.) Let me tell you about my back wheel- it is over two years old, it has had broken many spokes from hard landings and general debris getting jammed in there. The spoke tension right now is about 25% lower than it should be. The bottom line is this wheel is beat to hell, even the Chris King hub is toasted. My D321 is perfectly straight and true, I tighten and replace the spokes and it is 100% good to go. I have taken huge jumps with loose spokes and there has been no damage to the rim itself. This rim belongs on a 250cc dirtbike. Another strength is that this wheel looks the bomb. Wide profile rim for the 2.5 tires, stiff, strong and pretty light actually. Mavic quality. Loving it. 32 and 36 hole available. A friend of mine builds wheels at the LBS and he says D321s are the easiest and best to build cause they are always straight and truen and no hassle, no hassles to the rider either.
Weaknesses:
Maybe it costs more, but look at the value and this is the cheapest wheel on the market. Even the 521's are the sh!t.

But this is a very good rim and would recomend anyone buying it for front use.

Strengths:
Weight is very good. Strength is awesome. Best looks - no weird colours etc. The grey goes with anything. I have only trued the wheels twice in almost 13 months!
Weaknesses:
None that I know. although I did flatspot my rear wheel about a year ago.

Bottom Line:
Rock hard, same RIM as Deemax but get it hand built, not machine built like deemax and you'll have a stronger rim than all the pro's. Its pretty light for a DH rim and will take 8 foot drops with ease. Trust me: BUY THESE RIMS!!!

I beleive the 321's are the best DH rim made. All last summer, I had Sun Double wide rims on my Foes Slammer. They were strong, but TOO DAMN HEAVY!!! Also, they are pinned together at the seem, as opposed to the Mavic's being welded and machined. Sun rims are incredibly strong, but have weak seems. I have had to replace 2 mammoths because the seem failed, but the rest of the rim was fine. The Mavic 321's are wide enough to accept any tire, but are narrow enough to allow the tire to retain a rounder profile. I think that the 321 is the same rim that the D Max wheels use. They have the same width and cross section. Anyway, these rims are well worth the money.

"Test Track" - Durango Colorado
Duration Product Used:
Less than 1 month
Strengths:
Weight for a DH rim - lighter than most but not wimpy feeling Width - not to wide or narrow and fits all widths of tires
Weaknesses:
Cost - Nearly three times as much as a Mammoth
Similar Products Used:
Sun Rhyno Lite Sun Mammoth Mavic 121
Bike Setup:
Dirt Works Piranha, Stratos Superstar 6.0, 8" Hayes, AC and Hurricane Hubs, with Nokian, Maxxis or Michelen tires.
Bottom Line:
This rim is proven and designed well. The Mammoth may be just about as strong, but the seam is weaker and the finish quality is lower. It much more refined than anything Sun offers. The added cost may not be worth the diference, but if you can afford these over a Sun rim do it. I raced on Mammoths last year and they performed fine but I wanted something, lighter, more refined and slightly wider (but not as wide as a doublewide) for my new DH bike.

This rim is fantastic. It looks brilliant, but overall you put it on your bike and it gives you piece of mind. We all land sideways from time to time - with this rim you don't even need to stop (or get up out of the mud) and check to see if it is bent. Solid!

Bottom Line:
These rims are unbelievable. Super strong, only 675 grams (for you weight weenies, that's a good 200 grams less than the competition's disc specific rims)I've bashed the hell out of these for the last few months and not had to true them at all. Last night I went for a ride in the snow (about 6" of the white stuff) with a bunch of my XC hardtail buddies and kicked their asses climbing (review bike setup) because of the wide footprint afforded by this rim. Go get a pair.
