Date Reviewed: May 7, 2008
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Purchased At:friend
Strengths:bombproof
Weaknesses:no longer available?
Bike Setup:specialized stumpjumper, nixon forks, marzocchi hubs
Bottom Line:Came with the frame over 10 years ago and still going strong. I changed the front hub to a 20mm to work with a psylo xc (junk) and then nixons- kept the rim. I would like to switch over to a disc specific rim set but really can't justify it. They work and never need to be trued. I have heard the spokes buckle and and ping on more than a few occasions but they always stay true.

Date Reviewed: August 8, 2005
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Purchased At:D'Ornellas (came with 1996 GT Ricochet)
Strengths:Mavic quality and only had to be trued 2x in 9yrs.
Weaknesses:A little light weight and no eyelets.
Similar Products Used:Rolf Dolomite Disk, Weinnman Zac-19 (to replace cracked rear Mavic M-238 rim).
Bike Setup:2001 Trek Fuel 90 Disk, 1996 GT Ricochet.
Bottom Line:A great rim that came stock on my 1996 GT Ricochet. Only had to be straightened 2x since mid Oct.1996. No dings, dents or scratches on braking surface. Would of been nice to have eyelts to reinforce rim as at 2 eyelets are stress cracks. Front rim is still in excellent condition and the rear was replaced by a Weinnman Zac-19, which isn't as good.
Bottom Line: On an entry level off-road race bike it's great.

Purchased At:lbs
Strengths:My buddy put these on his bike years ago, then I bought it from him, so I don't know how much they cost.

My buddy beat on them hard (180lbs)doing tricks both in rocks and urban. Then I got them, and beat on them hard as I was learning (way too gung-ho)! It's amazing how well they've held up!

Kepp in mind that these are from several years ago - so perhaps they were better built then???
Weaknesses:Don't last forever.

Needed truing about once a year.
Bike Setup:bla bla bla
Bottom Line:The are NOT the latest greatest rims. But they survived years of abuse. I'm taking these off and replacing them with new all disk fat FR wheels. Had to just give them the credit they're due!

Strengths:Affordable, decent strength
Weaknesses:Sidewall hardness
Bike Setup:GT Pantera
Bottom Line:Rims were stock on bike and have not needed much attention. A lot of people indicate that the 238's don't hold up well. I weigh 160 and do not consider my riding style to be exceptionally kind to wheels. The 238's have not given me any problems. One area that I ride has a stepped, rocky climb that requires a lot of speed to climb. There are usually several hard impacts on the way up but these rims have survived quite well time and time again. Maybe I'm lucky or maybe the people with the complaints are more abusive than I am.

Bottom Line:I got these rims from Supergo on XTR hubs for dirt cheap. I use them to commute to work and so far haven't had any problems with truing in a year and this is after using them every day rain or shine. Maybe you can't drop off cliffs with them but they are recreational rims and for what they are intended they are a good rim. If you want a cheap set of XTR hubs(pre 95) and some good rims for commuting and light trails, you can't beat the price.

Bottom Line:These rims originally came with my bike and I have since then upgraded to something better. I weigh 165lbs and would warp them on the slightest bump. I seemed to be spending more time truing them than actually riding them. I would hesitate to sneeze around them for fear that they would come apart! If you plan to do any serious riding I would definately recommend upgrading to something better. I did, and it's made my life much easier.I ended up putting road tires on the 238's so if I'm riding around town or on my trainer they're there. If you do the same don't even think of doing stairs or something. I'd give them 3 chilies for riding on the road but -3 chilies in the trails.

Being that any trail around here is about a tenth of a mile long, I abruptly ran out of trail, and like the unskilled goof that I am, I tried to turn around and fell. We're talking zero miles per hour, didn't even hurt, soft, embarrassing fall. But it knocked my rear wheel so far out of true that it was hitting the frame!!!!! We're talking the wimpiest crash on record, and the wheel is potato chipped worse than it would've been if I'd had road rims on the bike! I am sorely disappointed in these wimpy rims. Hopefully I'll have a new back rim (NOT a Mavic 238!!!!) within the week.

Rear also has a dent in the sidewall that needs to get taken out. Not a bad rim, but I may upgrade soon if this keeps up.

Bottom Line:I bought a 1997 Specialized StumpJumper M2 brand new (!) a week ago. Mavic 238s came stock on it. I didn't even get a chance to take it on a real trail because it was raining last weekend. So I took it around the streets in my hometown and on a puny, flat, smooth trail (~1/2 mile). The biggest bumps I hit were a few (small) curbs. Somehow, in about 2 hours of fairly easy riding, the back rim went far enough out of true that I had to take it in. My LBS was able to get it straight so it fits between the brake pads, but it's not quite a circle any more, which means I had to spend a good 15 minutes screwing with the back brake setting. It rolls, but it doesn't exactly instill confidence to have a never-ridden wheel get bent on minute amounts of wimpy riding. I am a pretty big kid (6'1, 210 lbs), but I make a point not to hit stuff too hard when it's possible. I'm an optimistic guy, so I'm going to assume that this is just an unfortunate isolated incident; therefore I'll give them an extra flamin' chili pepper, bringing the total up to a whopping 2. I'll re-post when I've got a few more miles on them.

I replaced the spokes and trued it, but 3 weeks later is was wobbly again. Rode it one more time and more spokes brokw off. But I am 6'3 and weigh 225 and I ride very hard and don't slow down for nothing. O.K. rims for woosy riders but suck if you ride hard. Everything else on the Schwinn is awesome and I have'nt had any problems other than these crappy rims. With such a good bike you would think they would put on good rims.

I do trials on my 238's as well and I still haven't had any problems, although this may be due to the fact that I had a profetional wheel biulder make them, and also I ride a full suspention bike. I bought a Mavic 238 rim 2 years ago as a replacement for rim I had taco'ed... It was cheap and I never figured it would last. I built the wheel up myself and only had to true a couple of times..and I weigh 190. It has lasted me through 2 years of hard riding, many crashes and countless v-brake pads.
Alas...the effect of all those brake pads rubbing against the rim has finally taken it's toll and it's time to replace it. I think this is the first front rim I have had actually wear out on me before I had the chance to taco it...
I would reccomend this rim to anyone looking for a good, inexpensive, strong wheel.

I got this rim for my rear wheel after a day of downhilling at Brekinridge (on a hardtail, smart) shattered my previous rim (some POS Araya). The guy at my LBS gave it to me for ten bucks, so I went for it. It's held up well for the last six months, no truing at all. It's taken me up and down some hairy stuff, almost all the trails around here are dust and rock, we don't really get much soft soil. Foot-tall drop-offs are pretty standard for water bars. What can I say, these things stay in true on rough trails on a hardtail. NOTE: they were built by a master wheelbuilder, that probably has a lot to do with it. they aren't that light though

I switched to 238's and unfortuately, I haven't had time to wear out the sidewall as I pulled a spoke and nipple through the rim. I have also done that to a 217. Absolutely no more mavics for me!

These came stock on my Heckler. I've been using them for over a year with moderate riding without need for having to true them once.
Mavic describes them as touring and trekking rims, so don't expect them to perform as well as 217, X517 or Crossmax. For general all round riding they will suffice. However, the machined sidewalls (UB process) seem to be rather smooth compared to the other pricier models. Furthermore, without the SUP feature, the jointed seam is rather obvious. These came stock on my GT LTS-3 and I thought wow Mavics, these will never bend!. I was just a little bit off. These are the most unpredictable rims I have ever seen. I can ride it downhill for a day and they will be straight, but then as I ride home on the road they will get bent. Before every ride I have to spend 10 minutes and true them.
I think that they are possessed because sometimes overnight, when I have not ridden the bike and its sitting in my garage, the rims get bent.
I can't recommend these rims to anyone, even casual riders because they bend in the driveway. The braking surface is a bit slick, but not as bad as some of the other reviewers might lead you to believe. The best part about this rim is the Mavic Equipped sticker that comes with the bike when you get them.
I'll probably upgrade to a Mustang Asymetrical rim because I heard they were good and they are not too expensive.
I'll have to give it two stars because sometimes it holds out surprisingly well, and because its taught me how to true rims very well.

I weigh 185 lbs and have a fairly aggressive riding style, but mondo by any means. I rebuilt the rear whell using straight 14/15 db spokes and things have been a little better. But, I noticed that I have developed stress marks on the rim surfaces at the spoke nipples. I think the 238's are good rims for either lighter weight riders and/or less aggressive riders. Mavic identifies the rims as best for touring and easy trekking. I'm going to replace the rims with some others (217, 220, or Specialized Z-23). I rate these rims as 3 chilis.

Now I have a new 238 rear rim built by a pro--BIG DIFFERENCE. I have had it about 2 months now and have only had to true it once after a big fall. Now, my front wheel will bend before my back one will. I strongly suggest these rims to anybody needing some good rims, but get them built by a pro.

Prior to getting my Mavic 238s I had toasted a slew of front wheels. I'm not sure if it was because of the wheels (Araya RM 17's), the builder (a good mechanic for roadies, doesn't get the MTB thing) or the fork (Macaroni 400's air/oil). I changed all three at once and my problems went away.Add to the reliablity a good wear factor, and a great big huge braking surface and you've got big guy wheel heaven.

Since I had the 238's professionally built, I have trained for racing for 20 months and NEVER needed the rims trued. This includes some crashes that took our handlebars and even a crankset!
The 238's are stiffer than the rest of the Mavics, but you pay a price with the weight. One difference is that a stiff rim and a 120TPI tire will keep you from DNF's in a race, even if you have to lug an extra few grams with you to finish.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR WHEELS BUILT BY A PROFESSIONAL - it makes a BIG difference in how long they last.

Put my front wheel in a creek last winter hard enough to bend the steerer tube and crush the headset, but the wheel came through just fine. Snapped a spoke on the rear last month, and it needed some minor trueing afterward, but that's been it for maintainence. The balance between light weight and durability seems optimum for xc and all-around riding, the raised center sloughs off mud like it's supposed to, and the price is reasonable, so they rate 5 chilis in my book.Funny though, I have friends who like them as much as I do, and friends who couldn't get rid of theirs fast enough. Maybe these things come from two different sources and I drew a lucky pair. Whatever the case, mine are going strong after 10 months of hard use.

Compared to the Matrix rim, this one goes out of true far too easily for my
taste. The Matrix rim was still straight when it was destroyed, after 2 years
of use, whereas the Mavic rim is now out of true to the point where the tire
nearly brushes the frame, after a mere 3 months of wear. If you're looking
for low cost rims that are strong enough, forget these. On the plus side, they
are pretty light...
