Strengths:Bought this wheel about 4 years ago but I'm going to write a review since I think it deserves it. Today the rear wheel punctured on the beggining of the second lap of a race and since I had ran out of spares I decided to duke out the last lap with no air whatsoever on the rear wheel, all 10 KM of it. Of course I ended up in last place but when I checked the rim for damage there was non whatsoever. Maybe it was the lack of big rocks on the course but it is still impressive.
Weaknesses:A bit on the heavy side?
Similar Products Used:Mavic 317 on front wheel.
Bike Setup:Full Deore XT, rst air fork, Mercedes car.ry frame. Propietary components
Bottom Line:True It Once a year and forget about it. Will not fail before you do.

Strengths:Light. Front wheel seems to hold up well.
Weaknesses:Rear wheel spokes loosen after every ride. I have had the rear wheel in the bike shop 5 times for the exact same thing. There is never any difference.

Bike Setup:Raleigh M40, XT everything. J2 fork.
Bottom Line:I commute A LOT on this bike on some serious city streets. The rear wheel has taken a pretty severe beating in the 500 miles I have put on it. And the spokes wont stay tight. I am going with something else.

Bought these laced with Wheelsmith spokes and XT hubs for @ $150 as a last minute emergency purchase, and intended for them to be temps for a trip I went on. Well needless to say I soon forgot about the wheelset I originaly intended for my bike, I guess that gives these a gold star. Strengths:Strong rim for XC. (Not meant for 200+lb, jump off cliff riders.)
Weaknesses:None really.
Similar Products Used:Bontrager Corvair
Bike Setup:Specialized Epic tricked out.
Bottom Line:This is a followup review. After about 30 miles of agressive XC, I had to true it. The wheel exhibited wobble in the front and hop in the rear. I had it trued by a professional at a bike shop. Now I got over 100miles on the bike. The wheel still spins straight and round like an super expensive custom made rim.

I think the X317 which comes on other bikes is tad lighter, but the X223 sure is stronger.

Strengths:Tough as nails, four seasons and still perfecty true.
Weaknesses:weight, maybe? I don't know how much these weigh but they're probably not XC light.
Bike Setup:Giant VT1
Bottom Line:These came on an Epic I bought used on ebay with a season of riding on them already. I have since sold the Epic and kept the rims on my Giant VT. These have been used for four seasons total and they have been only trued once while the Shimano hubs they are laced to are shot to hell. Keep having to tighten the hubs after every few rides.. I'm only 150 lbs which isn't much, but I ride agressively with some drops on some technical trails on Denver's front range in the Rocky Mountains. If you've ever ridden trails here, you know how abusive the terrain is on bikes. These are the only rims I've ever owned and I see no need to buy rims that cost hundreds more when these have never given me any problems. You should buy these rims because they're affordable and will last you. Don't buy these if you're the type of rider who needs to spend hundreds of dollars on "nicer" rims just for the sake of having more expensive rims.

Strengths:Strong and durable enough for light riders. It is also light enough for XC use. Now please do not be an ignorant fool and compare this to the super expensive crossmax. Those rims are not the same as this one.
Weaknesses:May not be strong enough for 200+ pound riders, but I don't know.
Bike Setup:Tricked out Epic
Bottom Line:I weigh around 150lb, and I ride agressively. I had to true it once as it exhibited minor wobble after couple of months of riding, but even those expensive CROSSMAX wheels would need truing after a while.

Do buy this rim if:

1. You weigh under 200 pounds and do fast agressive XC trails and not jump off stuff constantly. (I do perform minor jumps and rockhopping on the trail but I always try to land with less impact.)

Don't buy this rim if:

1. You are a fat dude with 200+ pounds and do fast agressive XC and jump off obstacles constantly.

By reading some of the below reviews, I have to either think of these possibilities.

1. Bad reviewers just happened to get the bad quality ones.
2. They are just stupid and did insane jumps and D/H.
3. They weigh 200+ pounds.

So there you have it. It has been working awesome for me. I talked to a bike shop dude about upgrading these, but he looked at me saying, "This is a pretty good rim. Why do you want to ditch it?" and I felt like a fool.

2) A friend of mine hit my rear mavic while on a downhill run at 40kph. My bike was sleeping by the trail coz we were all resting; when the downhill rider lost control. He hit my wheel, which caused him to endo. My bike jumped half a meter to my other friend. The downhilling bike (also using these damn 223s) flew to me, hit me in my back, and the rider endoed over two riders and 2 bikes in like 5-6 meters forward.

No damages on the rims. That, my friend, is impressive stuff...for the rims. The rider is a whole diffrent story.

I expected to see some damage after a few of those crashes but haven't so these rims get my vote. I ride rooty/rocky trails and these things hold up well. Strengths:Decently light weight, strong (unless, perhaps, you are obese) and raceworthy, they look good on my bike. Came stock on a Cannondale F1000.
Weaknesses:None thus far, after riding very hard and often on them for 1.5 years.
Similar Products Used:These are the first disc-brake specific wheels I've owned.
Bike Setup:Cannondale F1000 hardtail. Ti Lefty DLR fork-tine, LX crank, XT rear hub (also cool), SRAM drive, Hayes hydro disc brakes, EA 70 handlebar, eggbeaters, etc. etc.
Bottom Line:This is my first disc brake/and rim setup. I used to go through rim brake wheels like berries through a bear. Yet these have been put though a full season and a half of XC trail riding, training for racing, and a race, and are performing as good as new, as far as I can tell. I've had to do a couple of very minor truing touch-ups about four times in a year, even though these are laced with very light, butted spokes. Other than that, zero issues.
Frankly, I'm a bit sick of seeing valuable products such as this receive poor ratings due to the abuses of greatly overweight riders. If you are 80lbs overweight, please don't expect much from XC racing gear! Use the freeride stuff.

Strengths:Everything. They have needed little tuning, the finish has lasted great, the spokes have not tried to pull the eyelets up through the rim, tires are easy to install and remove, pinch flatted only once and they look good too.
Weaknesses:I'm thinkin', I'm thinkin'. . . . . .
Similar Products Used:Only disc specific rim I have used.

Bottom Line:I am 6'5" and weigh 265 pounds and I have had these rims for 4 years. I don't ride them off the roof of the house or perform any "North Shore" type stunts, but I do ride some fairly rough terrain here. I have also ridden them into curbs at speed and on the local downhill course many times (although I take a "little" more than four minutes to complete it, unlike the pros that race it a couple times a year). On a night ride, I hit a rock large enough to clean me off the bike into a perfect Flying W demonstration that broke my Bell helmet. I honestly don't understand how some people have managed to tear up these rims as claimed (J.R.A.).

I have just updated to Hayes discs (from the original Magura Louise's) and had to buy a new wheelset today because the Magura Comp hubset won't accept the Hayes discs unless I am willing to grind on them (I'm not). What did I get? Another set of 223's.

Apparently YMMV, but I'm handing out five stinky steamers for value and four for overall because you can probably get lighter wheels that are as strong or stronger even though it would co$t you.

I've trued the back on three time and the front on twice. Before I bent them they were fine and went with out truing for about three months but once you true once the party's over. Strengths:These came with my '02 Giant NRS2 purchased November '01. I have around 1500 offroad, XC-type riding miles on these rims. I do zero hucking, shucking, jiving, jumping, whatever you want to call it. I ride XC style, have been for over ten years, and these rims have held up 100%. I have had several broken spokes but the LBS attributes them to the cheap hub that came on my early-model NRS2 (not XT, and the spokes all break at the hub flange). Outstanding durability. I have wanted to upgrade my hubs from day one, but these wheels have never given me a reason to want to screw with'em.
Weaknesses:Zero problems encountered.
Bike Setup:Giant NRS2 with lots of minor upgrades...
Bottom Line:If you are a XC-style rider, you should have no problems with them. Get them trued every so often and replace broken spokes as necessary. If you want to jump off roofs or whatever, then reconsider what you are buying (i.e. buy something made for that style).

Bike Setup:short travel XC frame with AVID disc brakes.
Bottom Line:I'm chubby, 195lbs, and I ride over rocks and things, and these rims have taken it so far. This may be because of the high-wall XT hubs and 14 guage spokes, it's a stronger foundation for weaker rims. I have no idea how well these things will hold up to drops because I don't do that. I'm totally an XC climber type rider, and these things are still true and running great after 6 months. The seam does look lame...it's looks like it could split, but it hasn't. If these ever taco or get severely dented, I'll put on some 517's or something, but so far they work perfectly. These are not part of Mavic's "extreme MTB" series of rims, so complaining about them folding from a 6 foot drop is a little much. They're cheap XC rims that work. I'm sure I'll mess them up eventually, but I'll have gotten my money's worth.

Not a rim defect, an poor assembly decision. Haven't had a problem with keeping them true.

Hard impacts can blow the tire off the rim because they are so shallow. Not a factor in racing, where this is a benefit in rapid flat repair, but they are not a jumping/big drop rim.

Bottom Line:So far, I can't say these rims have any major flaws about em. I ride rocky, loose, technical, agressive xc and they've held up fine so far. I cased an awkward dip in the trail and pinched the rear, and later found a small dent in the side of the rim with resultant wacked true job, but a spot true fixed that (well, not the dent). I haven't had any severe trueing problems since then.

The riims are'nt fantastically light or whiz-bang, but for the price, that's OK. They don't true to laser perfection like some other rims I've seen, but since they're disk rims, I'm not too concerned.

I think trueing and preloading the wheels before riding the rims helped since a lot of reviews seem to tell contrary results. Machine built wheels, IMO, should never be trusted to hold up right off the bat. A little pre-trueing and tensioning goes a long way.

Weaknesses:Maybe a bit chunky. Not too bad though.
Similar Products Used:Mavic x517,117, Bontrager Mustang and Valiant
Bike Setup:Santa Cruz Superlight w/Marzocchi Z2, shimano discs, XT, king hubs and headset, easton Carbon bars and post.
Bottom Line:OK- I'm writing this review because I came to this page prior to buying these rims and almost didn't buy due to the number of bad reviews. Look at the common thread with the people complaining- almost all them bought the rims as OE equipment on giant bikes. Nothing against Giant, but machine-built wheels are never going to last, regardless of rim quality.
So I ponied up $29 each for these rims and laced them up to my king discotech hubs with 1.8spokes and alloy nipples,3x, 32 hole. The rims built up really nice. Mavic rims are always true and round out of the box, unlike some other brands. Another bonus I discoverd is that the x317 and x223 share the same E.r.d, which means that if you taco a x223, you can do a "lace-over" onto a new x317 and use the same spokes. This makes me happy.
Okay, I built them up, rode them hard 1x, and re-dished them. Still good. A few rides later they are still going strong. I've only had them a few weeks but they've seen a lot of riding already, some big air, a few endos, and it's all good.
Here's the main thing I'm trying to get across people: Rims are only as good as the quality of the build. I was a bike mechanic in shops for 5 years. It's not rocket science, it doesn't require a great mechanic. When you build wheels up and ride them the first time, they lose about a third of their spoke tension. This tension is what holds the wheel together. So it doesn't matter what kind of rims you have, after you ride them once or twice, true your wheels and make sure your spokes have plenty of tension. Check them every few rides, just squeeze all your spokes to make sure none are loose. I they are loose, true and dish your wheel, then, starting at the valve stem, go around the wheel and tighten each nipple 1/2turn. Make sure to use the right size spoke wrench! If you even start to round out a nipple, stop and back the rest of your spokes off instead. If you have to much spoke tension, you will break spokes and nipples out on the trail. Go to your local shop and squeeze or pluck some spokes on some nice hand-built wheels, you will see what the right amount of tension feels like. If you don't want to bother with this type of stuff, have a shop do it. But most importantly, just do it.
I'm giving these rims high ratings cuz $29 for mavic is dirt-cheap, and these rims are fine when built well.

They haven't gone out of true nor have I noticed any other defect whatsoever. Judging by the other reviews, perhaps they are not sturdy enough for downhillers. If you look at these rims, it's obvious that they weren't designed for that. I think if you are a lightweight freerider (145 lbs) they meet or exceed expectations.

Bottom Line:The wheels on this-and that includes the rims- are probably the best built I ever had. I have not put a spoke wrench to them-ever! And that's with about 2500miles on them.
My gut feeling is that wheels/rims live a lot longer on full suspension rigs with 2.1+ tires, because the tires and shocks absorb most of the impacts-the wheels don't get "whacked" as hard. Also-I ride pretty hard, but I only weigh 150lbs, so I really don't know how useful my opinion is to the 200lb+ crowd.
