Submitted by Mike Day a Cross Country Rider from warwickshire, UK
Date Reviewed: August 13, 2007
Favorite Trail:any that bans horses
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Purchased At:Direct from the mavic rep!
Strengths:reliability and strength.
Weaknesses:none so far.
Similar Products Used:Mavic 231cd's/ Campag/ Atac/ various others
Bike Setup:1992 Bontrager Race, rigid thru and thru, maguras [HS11], nuke proof front hub/ XT parallax rear hub, DT swiss double butted spokes and brass nipples.
Bottom Line:These were and still are the first ever SUP 217's to reach the North East of the UK in the early 90's, bought and haggled direct from the mavic reps car after he had showed them round. I built them up (I used to be and from time to time still am a wheel builder) paying close attention to even spoke tension (use a gauge) and gradually tightened them over the next year! since then they have not been trued or re tensioned ONCE! in at least 15000miles over 14 years, I am a lightish weight @160lbs rider but above all have them built by some-one who knows what they are doing, and then pick a good line down hill!.... eyelet cracking is often caused by uneven loose tension causing stress risers and rim wall wear is done by small stones in brake pads in a few seconds! stop and remove them! the reason they last .... they were built with care! applies to all wheels.

Date Reviewed: August 11, 2005
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $11.00
Purchased At:Nashbar
Strengths:Strong, relatively light wheel, and it looks good!
Weaknesses:None so far
Similar Products Used:Sun Ditchwitch, Alex DM20, Sun Rhyno lite
Bike Setup:'04 Specialized Hardrock Pro Disk - SS Conversion
Bottom Line:Great wheel drilled for Presta and hard anodized.
Im 185 and jump off everything in sight but not usually over 2 feet or so. I think hand built wheels are a must because they are stronger and hold their tension longer. I had this one laced up by my LBS.

Submitted by Del Sharp a Cross Country Rider from Vail-Breckenridge, CO
Date Reviewed: March 27, 2005
Favorite Trail:Two Elk (or, any trail in Vail)
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $50.00
Purchased At:Mountain Peddler, Minturn, CO
Strengths:Cool color shifting ano that worked nicely with the ti-dyed spokes. They've lasted over 7 years even while breaking a dozen or so spokes. Last year I converted them with Stan's no problem.
Weaknesses:No weaknesses discovered.
Similar Products Used:OEM
Bike Setup:'95 20" Y-22 (sub 24lbs) Kooka cranks/levers, Specialized ti bb; '00 Cannondale Super V Raven w/Sweet wings 25.5lbs.
Bottom Line:Initially, I weighed 165lbs and never was a crazy downhiller type, but by no means a sissy, either and these rims have held up without any problems.

After five years of marriage, I now weigh 185lbs and they are still running true.

Too bad they're French, otherwise I'd buy Mavics again in a heartbeat.

Date Reviewed: February 13, 2005
Favorite Trail:Santa Monica mountains
Duration Product Used:3 months
Purchased At:gift
Strengths:Super lightweight and tough
Weaknesses:none yet
Similar Products Used:All kinds of stuff
Bike Setup:Bianchi Super GL
Mavic 217 SUP on XTR hubs, Wheelsmith hand build
Bottom Line:Before my 217's, I was running a 517 in the rear and a 221 up front. Both went out of true (albeit slightly) after only a handful of rides. The 217's have been subjected to much more punishment that my old wheels ever were, yet they are still as true as they were when I got them. Shaving off some ounces of rotational weight wasn't so bad either.
I don't know what those other people were talking about. These are tough and light wheels.

Submitted by Skid Marks a Weekend Warrior from Santa Barbara, CA
Date Reviewed: September 22, 2003
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $230.00
Purchased At:Colorado Cyclist
Strengths:lightweight, strong for XC, CD gray finish helps with durability over the 5 years that I've had this pair
Weaknesses:none for me, they have yet to even break a spoke
Bike Setup:Kona MokoMoko, Kings, Avid arch-rivals, XTR, XT parts, Thomson post & stem
Bottom Line:I had my X217 wheelset hand-built from Colorado Cyclist to replace the original wheels on my first surious MTB - Haro. Now they have outlasted the Haro and are on my Kona FS mount. These things were built very sturdy and on the heavier side for durability and it has worked out great for 5 years (6000+ miles off-road) now - CD rims, 14 guage 3-cross, XT hubs, brass nipples. I have only trued the rear wheel twice, guess it helped that I am only 145 lbs. These things have handled 1ft drops, lots of stairs, dried creek bed descends, and all the big hownhill/freeride trails around here without breaking. My friends and I are completely amazed that I am still using them, even after all the hard miles. The wheels' durability was probably also due to the dry riding conditions out here, and my riding style too. I recommend staying away from machine built wheels - HAND BUILT WHEELSETS ARE VERY DURABLE IN MY EXPERIENCE.

Submitted by Keith Denley a Weekend Warrior from Cottam, Preston, England
Date Reviewed: August 24, 2003
Favorite Trail:Local canalsside & lanes.
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $65.00
Purchased At:H. Hall Cycles, Manchester.
Strengths:Very few other than lightness and fashionably looking good .
Weaknesses:I have had very bad experience of Mavic rims in general and the 217SUP in particular. They crack at the spoke holes due to metal fatigue. The spoke pulls out through the rim, even with professionally hand built and trimmed wheels, DESPITE the double eyelets which connect inner and outer walls of the rim box section. The eyelets simply crack in half, putting all the load on one wall of the rim, which is not up to the task. Consequently, Mavic rims are not worth their price. Also, they dent easily on any trail with even moderate size pebbles, despite massive tyres correctly inflated. They are far too narrow & weak for any MTB.
Similar Products Used:Alessa, Weinmann.
Bike Setup:Merlin Titanium MTB frame Deore XTR gears Middleburn cranks Ritchie pedals PACE DH suspension fork. X-lite Titanium bars and seat pillar Deore XT V.brakes Hope hubs. All professionally assembled by one of this countries greatest bike shops.
Bottom Line:I have read other peoples bad comments on MAVIC rims and agree with them. I feel that, like a racing car engine, Mavic build for a short life at high speed. They are Tour de France people who have crossed into MTBing and think that they can get away with thin wall narrow box sections. They are NOT for the guy who wants to assemble a Bomb-proof dream bike, ride it off road and keep it for a long time. I have had no trouble at all with any other part of my gear, - not even one single spoke. In short, I cannot understand why people trust Mavic in the off road world. They should not be allowed to produce and sell such crap at inflated prices

Submitted by Paul a Weekend Warrior from Salem, OR, US
Date Reviewed: June 29, 2003
Favorite Trail:Oregon single tracks
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Strengths:Light, strong.
Weaknesses:None yet but apparently I'm in the minority.
Similar Products Used:Mavic 237
Bike Setup:GT Avalanche aluminum hardtail. Mavic 237 up front and 217 Sup out back.
Bottom Line:I've used the 217 Sup hard as a drive wheel with a Shimano LX hub for 4 or 5 years. Large river bank rocks only navigable at speed, roots, stumps, plenty of air time. Replaced the rear 237 early on when it potato chipped jumping over a log. The 217 has remained true for a long time.

Key seems to be having a good wheel builder build it. He told me the factory built (assembly line) wheels are weaker and that a wheel built by a good builder is much stronger. So far that has seemed to proven true. I just inspected for defects and everything still looks good.

If I weren't able to get a really good builder to lace 'em up I might look to another rim based on a lot of other reviews I've read.

Submitted by Matt M a Cross Country Rider from Melbourne Australia
Date Reviewed: July 7, 2002
Favorite Trail:Mt Beauty Australia
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Purchased At:Came stock with bike
Strengths:Nice Stickers.
Weaknesses:Metal far too soft.
Eyelets rip out of rim.
Similar Products Used:Other stuff
Bike Setup:GIANT ATX 890 (but with Bombers)
Bottom Line:From day one the the eyelets started getting stress cracks around them (on the rear wheel). The rear rim needed regular truing to compensate for the spokes slowly pulling out. After two years of normal XC riding the cracks were massive and one day three spokes ripped completely out.

Brake surface is nice but these rims are not suitable for a rear wheel (especially nine speed) as the metal is too soft.

On the up side the stickers are nice and my front rim has hardly been touched in two years and has no cracks.

NOT recommended.

Bike Setup:Uma Kona Explosiva AMARELA !!!!

Duration Product Used:2 Years

Strengths:Light
Stay Trued
Weaknesses:Rattling pin deal sucks, but fixed with super glue
Similar Products Used:Mostly Mavic, but Sun also
Bike Setup:Full-suspension cross county bike
Bottom Line:Good rims that have held up well so far. The rattling pin deal is kind of a pain until you take the time to fix it. I don't know, two years on these babies and they are as true as the day I bought the wheel. What else to say? They work for their intended use: cross country racing. If you do big jumps, you will bend them. Also, lets face it folks, rims take a lot of abuse and fail from time to time. End of story. Half of the battle is building a good wheel. If you get two years out of a rim you are doing well.

Date Reviewed: February 13, 2001
Favorite Trail:Any without Grizzly Bears
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $180.00
Purchased At:Colorado Cyclist
Strengths:Have only needed truing once a season since I bought them in 1996. Totally durable under normal XC riding. Colorado Cyclist builds the best wheels, hands down!!
Weaknesses:Rattling pin syndrome, but nothing a little epoxy didn't silence. Tough to get brake pad residue off ceramic rim coating. Decals coming off.
Similar Products Used:Old Trek Matrix (OEM)
Bike Setup:Wheels handmade by Colorado Cyclist. LX hubs laced with DT 14/15 spokes. Now on a 2000 Trek 9.9 Pro, previously used on a 1994 Trek 930.
Bottom Line:Seems wheel build quality greatly affects rim performance and longevity. If built correctly, this rim is tough as nails!! Keeps its true, brakes great under all conditions and they look cool, too. Five steamin' piles for Mavic!!

Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:lightweight
Weaknesses:Cannot connect the manufacturer except through dealers, not even email.
Similar Products Used:many
Bike Setup:Single speed, Paul WORM hub
Bottom Line:I commute 24 miles a day. I use my single speed during the winter. The rim split on me, on the brake surface, after about 1200 miles. No excuse for this. True I pick up a lot of salt, sand and ice but I keep the bike pretty clean. This rim gains its lightweight by shaving the walls too thin; making the rim sidewall unreliable and prone to failure for anyone but a recreational summer rider. Don't use this rim on your winter bike.

Date Reviewed: March 25, 2000
Favorite Trail:Tyler state park, Tyler TX
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Strengths:Stay relativly straight for a couple of years if you keep after truing them.
Weaknesses:Spoke eys are weak and pull out, aluminum is too hard and brittle
Similar Products Used:Mavic 517, Sun
Bike Setup:Rocky Mountin Element Race, Z3, Fox Vanilla, King Hubs
Bottom Line:The rear rim started to disintegrate after a little less than two years. All the spoke eyes started to get stress fractures, the aluminum turned a lighter color around many of them and several pulled out completely. The LBS told me that they are heat treated to make them harder which keeps them round. Just be very careful when tightening spokes or you will cause them to fail.

Favorite Trail:a long fast one
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:looks good, light, don't know what that guy compalining of the weight was riding but i want one! I had it a month, good rim, but i got a barbed wire flat and bashed it. oh well, got me home. I am too picky though so I stacked it out back.
Weaknesses:hard to find in sunset anodized.
Those are so cool!
Similar Products Used:221, bonti mustang asym very good!
Bike Setup:carbon hdtl, xtr, 2x8 road 165mm crank, riser bars, yeti grips
Bottom Line:if i were you I would go buy it! The sidewalls are straightenable with linemans dikes and a soft cloth if you ever ding one, but it takes quite a lot of skill to put one back in proper round/hop. Run a lot of spoke tension on this rim it can handle it with the eyelets. if you can, since it IS a little flexier than steel, use long-threaded dbl butted spokes and locknuts (adds about 1oz to your wheel big deal, but makes it impossible to untrue short of a 10foot ledge onto a sidewalk!

Strengths:good strong straight rim and braking surface
Weaknesses:weld doesn't look smooth. also two little metal pieces inside the rim next to the weld came loose and rattle around.I put some liquid weld in there to try and stop it.
Also little pieces of metal end up in my xt v-brake pads after 3 years of use. stickers coming off
Similar Products Used:mavic 222, cxp11 138
Bike Setup:fisher cronus 95 rs judyxc xt everything else
Bottom Line:I have hit this rim on a root at the bottom of a valley going up the other side. My shock bottomed out and so did my tire and I was sure that my rim was buttered toast, but nothing was wrong, it did not even need to be trued. Only problem was with the metal things near the weld that came loose and rattle around inside the rim. sup=gpood braking surface enjoy the ride
