Marzocchi has horrible customer service expensive | | Similar Products Used: | RockShox Psylo SL, Marzocchi DJ 1 | | Bike Setup: | Rocky Mountain RM6, now with boxxer, Hope Discs | | Bottom Line: | I rode this fork for about a week, then raced on it once. I was beginning to like it. Then suddenly I decided to take it freeriding, that's when I took about a 6 foot drop (landing of grass!!!) and the sanction tubes snapped in half!!!!!!! I tumbled on the fork and it stabed me in the shoulder. Not only did this fork break easily under pressure, it broke in only about 2 weeks of riding. I tried to get it warranty and marzocchi was jerks about it. They made me buy another fork, so I said F*** it. I still have the fork if anyone wants to see pictures of it. Plus it's expensive. Non-freeriders should buy fork. Too heavy for XC. Not big enough for DH. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Best freeride forks on the market. If you want a great overall freeride fork with plenty of travel that are fairly light, buy these forks. | | Weaknesses: | WARNING: Apparently in 2001 Marzocchi thought it would be a good idea to change the Z1 product design a little from previous years. Bad Idea! I didnt even think twice when I removed the brake bosses. Dont try this at home because in the 2001 model they hold the whole fork together. Removing them caused the fork to separate and I had to take it in to a shop to have the seals replaced and the shocks overhauled. I have no idea whos decision at Marzocchi this was but why make such a drastic change such a great product? And dont tell me that I should have known better because in the span of 24hrs, three other people had came into the same shop with the same problem. I guess Marzocchi will make more money selling seal replacement kits this year. | | Similar Products Used: | why bother, none other compare! | | Bike Setup: | Norco 2001 VPS Launch with Z1 QR20+ forks | | Bottom Line: | Best fork out there and highly recommend them. from Dundas, Ontario, Canada Date Reviewed: October 18, 2001 | | Favorite Trail: | Whatever lets me get creative | | Duration Product Used: | 3 months | | Purchased At: | Freewheel Cycle - one of Canada's top 10 shops | | Strengths: | The sign of a good product is when it disappears beneath you when riding it. I never have to wonder how the fork will handle a certain situation, and that's a huge confidence boost. QR20 axle tracks accurately, like my Girvin Crosslink. This fork still lets me climb as well as before, and even helps in some uphill situations. | | Weaknesses: | No compression damping control - SSV only. The rebound damping seems occasionally inconsistent. A seal at the arch/slider junction was faulty from the factory, and it barfed oil on my disc-brake side. I had to clean the rotor with rubbing alcohol and use a lighter to burn oil off the pads. | | Similar Products Used: | None - first long-travel fork | | Bike Setup: | Brodie Diablo frame, built it up myself with Avid mech discs, Avid ultimate levers, RaceFace headset, bar, cranks, BB, post, Mavic F519 rims, XT/LX/Sachs drivetrain, Nokian 2.3 DH, Vanilla RC shock | | Bottom Line: | My first moment of truth with this fork was in Durham Forest. I was with with a group of 8 or so, and we came to a section with a series of steps made of three or four small logs. It was on a hill, so myself and the resident Pro downhiller, on a Brodie Devo, decided to launch from a high lip at the top side of the steps to clear the whole section. He lined it up perfectly on his first run and cleared it without incident. I, however, didn't properly navigate the turn in the trail uphill of the steps and missed my line. I ended up riding diagonally across the steps, straight for a suitcase-sized rock. I stayed loose, let the fork hit it, and rolled out the bottom under control. Had I been riding my ProFlex with a Girvin Crosslink, I would have blown the shock (again) and probably hurt myself. However, the Z1 just sucked up the rock. The fork did not bottom out. The spectators said they saw the fork compress instantly and almost fully, but like I said earlier, it disappeared beneath me and did its job. On my next attempt, I made the turn, hit my line and cleared the section smoothly. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Plush, does not bottom out, adjustable | | Weaknesses: | Seals are leaking a bit. I purchased it from a friend that upgraded to a super T, so I know it is in good shape, just needs new seals. Hardly a real weakness of the product | | Similar Products Used: | 2001 Psylo XC if you classify it similar (has 5" travel) | | Bike Setup: | 2001 FSR enduro expert, w Z1 QR20, Thompson seatpost and stem, Selle Italia saddle, El gato rear tire, Specialized big hit front tire) | | Bottom Line: | For the price I found this item (ok, it was used, and I did know the person who used it) I could not let this fork go. I was AMAZED how much better it was than my Psylo XC (which is now on my hardtail). Dont get me wrong, the Psylo is good, but the zoke is SO plush, it constantly holds the wheel to the ground, and the adjustments work so well.
I even managed to completely disassemble / reassemble following the manuals. An absolute pleasure to work on.
I wished my bike had originaly come with this fork, I had fun on the old fork for the past 6 months, but the Z1 is SOOOOOO much more fun.
I will never switch from Marzocchi now.
One last note, I would / and will pay full price in the future for this product. Happily.

Steering is precise and zero flex under heavy braking. It floats over every thing and keeps the front tire from skipping during braking without too much diving. Once I set up the sag and compression I havent had touch it. The stock springs and oil are perfect for my weight (150 lbs). Even though I'm using it on a stiff hardtail it smooths out the back end because off the ammount and quality of travel. Other brands might have 4"-5" of travel, it's nowhere the same. It is also very durable. On several occasions I accidentally planted the dropout (like a bmx peg) on a concrete bench without a scratch. Unless your full on downhill racing this is all the fork you will ever need. Definetly the best.

Its totally (not to mention instantly) tunable, you can go from four to five inches of travel, in about 1 hour of work. But i wish that they would come with progressive wound springs. After a month I changed from 4" to 5" travel, and It really is strange. It kind of messed with the whole balance of the bike and just made it feel weird. The 4" of travel keeps the bike feeling tight and nimble where as when I went to 5" it seemed more stable at the high speeds but harder to balance at the low end. I don't recomend this for a hard tail it doesnt feel good the 4" is fine and hard to bottom. But its really fun when your haulin down some stairs or bombin off a big drop 5'+. you don't hardly feel a thing. It has super smooth action. I love it. And these forks are super easy to maintain and work on, and fairly simple in operation. I did run into a problem though when i was converting the travel. You have to remove the dampening and rebound "cartriges" to replace the top out springs. I f'ed up when I compressed the rebound one and shot oil all over my shop. and once you do when it got reassembled there was no dampening because it that, there's a big air pocket sitting in the top of it so was pushing air. And it is a pain to try and get that air out. The process involed fliping the bike over and compressing the shock till it was gone. what can i say I hate getting oil all over my hands, and twice in one day is 2 times too many. No one on the market makes a single crwon that could even come close to comparing to this fork. By the way marzocchi makes some really kick ass clothes and stuff like that. from spokane,WA.usa Date Reviewed: September 7, 2000 | | Favorite Trail: | one thats hidden | | Duration Product Used: | 3 months | | Purchased At: | Marzocci | | Strengths: | This fork is one of the best out there. Its strenght are well its strengh. It's a very smooth riding fork and very adjustable. It tracks well for a single crown and can pretty much soak up anything. It has hard easton AE70 stanchions wich are one of the hardest alloys in the world and are Very hard to scratch,( contrary to what some other uninformed people might think). | | Weaknesses: | The only weakness I think there is, is the weak ass springs that come stock. Sometimes people will get a miss assembled fork and shiznit iznt put together right and stuff squeaks. For all these people who put there bomber squeaks like bed springs, take off the stancion preload nobs and caps pull out the springs and shine a flashlite down into the fork. Look at the cartridge. Is it sitting to one side of the stanchion if so , then there is your squeak. A angled cartidge means a angled spring wich means premature wear and SQUEAK. call your locall dealer. | | Similar Products Used: | Other bombers other forks long tavel short travel.but in the long run it doesnt matter I know what I'm talking about. | | Bike Setup: | Kona chute frame z1qr20 mamoth hoops avid cable discs (they are pretty damn powerfull) pazazz bar stem combo xtr shift and derailer race face dh cranks kujo dh tires (just the good stuff) | | Bottom Line: | The bottom line is that this fork is cool. It does what it was intended to do (freeride). Thats a general statement but it covers most types of riding. The people that wine about the fork being to soft or the rebound adjusters turning with preload nobs or the bolts coming loose or any thing else that they think is wrong with this fork are just suffering from lack of knowledge. First off being to soft; the fork comes stock with a light weight prowound spring set up for people around 130 to 150. This is also true with oil hight. If you do not fit in this catagory its not set up for you it is stock with 7.5 weight oil and oil hieghts very.(check this before whining). READ YOUR MANUALL that is what it is for. Second of all preload nobs and rebound screws turning with them;Just a sugestion set preload first then rebound. Bolts coming loose? this happens on any fork that has removable crown. checking bolts every few rides has a name ( PREVENTATVE MAINTANENCE ) it works. If it does not fall off you dont have to replace it !!!! Read your manuall or if you dont understand have skilled professionalls custom tune your fork any good bike shop should be able to do it. from Waterloo Date Reviewed: August 28, 2000 | | Favorite Trail: | Sweet St, other streets | | Duration Product Used: | 3 months | | Purchased At: | Cyclepath! | | Strengths: | It's really well built, all the parts fit together really well and are polished to perfection. The adjustments work really well and can be done with no tools and without having to flip the fork over and mess with idiotic dials. It has enough preload to actually make a difference, and if you feel like turning the damping things 14523 times, you can pretty much fully lock the fork out. The qr20 is A REALLY GOOD IDEA. It adds LOTS of torsional stiffness and reduces wheel flex from disk brakes. It feels really solid in turns despite the single crown. It's easy to release unlike through axles that thread in and what not. The weight is really good. It feels heavy because of my front wheel but in fact it's only 4.5lbs on the shop scale. The main strength is that it's really well damped and basically allows you to blow through any technical section with lots of speed. It handles drop-offs pretty good. I've done some over 8 feet on flat and it didn't bottom out. Do that with ANY other single crown fork and your wrists are toast.
| | Weaknesses: | Ooh, there are a few. The spring clunks halfway through the stroke. Not loud (it's made louder by my monocoque frame) and you don't notice it at speed but when you just push on the fork, it makes all kinds of noise. Also, when I go off any drop off bigger than 5 feet it makes some noise when I land, mainly creaking. It also does that when I brake hard. It's the stanchions creaking in the crown, I lube them up every once in a while but that doesn't completely aleviate the problem. The crown bolts are always tight but one time I did a pretty big wheelie drop (8') and the left stanchion actually came loose from the crown and kinda moved up a little bit. The little c-rings prevent it from moving up too much. One other thing, some of the compression mechanisms are defective. The oil valve is too small so it increases damping a bit. I don't know if mine's like that but I have to run compression full out to get good action. Rebound is fine however. Another problem, the qr20 only helps with lateral flex... the fork is still long and thin and it does flex quite a bit fore and aft (mostly at the crown). Only a double crown or stanchions bigger than 30mm can fix that.
Also the price is f-ing killer! It's marked up A LOT in Canada. | | Similar Products Used: | Other Z1's, MrT's, JrT's, Monster T's, Stratos MX6 (my next fork), Risse Champ, Stratos Superstar 8.0 and 6.0, Boxxer, X-vert... pretty much everything. | | Bike Setup: | '00 Norco VPS 3, Z1 QR20, Vanilla R, Bontrager XXX DH bar, Giro Atlas seat, Black Spire Ring God, 24" Doublewide/Arrow 2.75... | | Bottom Line: | This fork is pretty sweet. It looks... very pretty, the action is just amazing over bumps and acceptable off drops. It's got pretty high pimp daddy factor generally. Some stuff is wrong with it but that's not a big problem. The price is quite RETARDED. Oh well, it came on my bike! This fork has made me a better rider, I'm yet to lose a DH race with it (yeah, the courses in Ontario are simple). You'd be surprised what 5" of marzocchi travel will get you down or over... or in! I'd have to give it 4.5 flamin' chilli's but what, I'll round it up to 5.
Tire clearance is pretty good, my bud's got an Intense 2.7 in the stock arch, and if you want more, you can get all sorts of wicked aftermarket arches for it. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$550.00 | | Purchased At: | Supergo | | Strengths: | I bought the 2000 model, it came with the 20mm hub and quick release. Since I wanted to use disc brakes the included disc hub saved me money. If you go over any rocks larger than a golf ball you'll love this fork. I went into some softball sized rocks because this fork makes you go FAST and was surprised that I just rolled right over them... So now I just smile and go over anything, people always say that I'm fast, here's my secret, is my fork.
| | Weaknesses: | It must crush every thing it goes over because I don't feel anything. Had to make my own 20mm hub adapter, and can't find the 4 springs to increase the travel from 110mm to 130mm. Not for XC riders, too heavy duty of a shock.... Kinda like buying a Land Rover for going to the supermarket.... OH!!!! make sure you set the shock up right, if not it'll feel like #2. The factory doesn't pre set it.... | | Similar Products Used: | Nothing is as stiff, looks as good, and at 4.7lbs. | | Bike Setup: | Storm Cycles Thunder, SUN Rhyno lite rims w/Maxxis Highrollers front, Tioga 2.3 DH rear. Yeah I filled this one but had to tell you peoples about a good thing.... :) Don't even waste any time thinking about buying this, go and buy one now! Run if you have too, You are wasting riding time. It's worth every penny.... If you don't use disc brakes, you don't really need the 20mm hub. Get the Z.1 CR, it's the same without the 20mm hub and it's about $100 less. Why are you still here? Go and buy one NOW, any Marzocchi!!!! It's all good.... | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

The brake arch needed to be upgraded Black Spire makes a great upgrade check it out, as far as bolts coming loose this can be avoided by paying some mind to your maintenence and you will never have this problem the QR dropout is very handy for mass shutteling no wrenches need be applied. My fork has a little bit of stiction but haven't had time to look for it, it is still pretty smooth but I've felt smoother Z-1 QR20's. This is a great fork for riders who want stiff, light, and full turning radius in one package or if your like me you huck off everything on your way to work, home or want to get a little crazy on the weekend while you still have time to heal. Just rode some rock gardens at Snowshoe West Virginia (The Gauntlet and Nosedive, see reviews at www.spokejunkies.com) and this fork tracked through the roughest sections without any noticeable flex. These are sections that I'd normally slow down for, but with new long suspension and little braking control due to rain, I just flew into them and trusted in the equipment. They are noticeably plusher and perform better than last years Z1. Warning: The oil level in each leg was more than two inches too low. I noticed this while riding XC and bottoming a couple of times. The suggested level is 50 mm and I topped each leg up to this and consequently never bottomed on the gnarly DH stuff.Awesome fork! | Overall Rating: |

from Columbus, OH Date Reviewed: March 22, 1999 | | Favorite Trail: | Channel 9 (Brisbane, Australia) | | Duration Product Used: | less than 1 month | | Strengths: | Lighter than a triple crown fork. Very rigid, tracks like it's on rails. Traditional Marzocchi plushness. | | Weaknesses: | Make sure you order a disk compatible hub. Needs a special bolt on disk brake adaptor. The springs chatter a bit. | | Similar Products Used: | '98 Z1 Bam | | Bike Setup: | Specialized FSR elite frame | | Bottom Line: | This is the best way of getting an awesome fork long travel fork without paying the weight penalty. The 20mm axle is noticeably stiffer than last years 4 travel Z1. I like the plush Marzocchi travel. It really eats up everything in its path and now it's nearly as stiff as a triple crown fork. So now here's a fork with long travel, but without the weight and with a decent turning circle. The '99 Bombers have some stiction out of the box, but that has nearly disappeared after only two rides. More to follow after I get some more riding time in. | Overall Rating: |
