The bottom line is this fork is crap, by far the worst thing i've ever used for suspension. the only good thing if you want to call it a good thing is that its cheap and easy. Damn thing bottoms out on anything over 3' with a nasty metal to metal sound not meant to be heard. Another problem from this fork is 2 weeks after riding the i noticed the stanchions were loose. i guess marzocchi should stop the outsourcing

i think they are the best forks for people on a budget, They are great after a bit of tuning to your riding style. (i mucked around with air pressure with a cable tie around one leg so i could see how much travel you get with different air pressures) I use less air pressure than recomended but don't do very big jumps. I think if i had the money i would try fox forks as well, i hear they are good from people i know.

zero maintenance except for oil changes once or twice a year. no leak, no break down, no hassles. very plush, was tracking extremely well until the pilot bushings started to wear but after 2 years, what do you expect, and even then the performance is better than most of the forks around

Like many reviews I've read on Marzocchi forks, the stock oil levels in my fork are probably too high, preventing full travel [only getting 63mm out of 100m]. I haven't had the time or the mechanical inclination to mess with it, so I'm suffering for now.
All in all, this fork has mid-level performance at an entry-level price.

Marzocchi simplicity, smooth travel (i have the 105mm coil/oil), good looks, can be used for agressive XC/Trail riding.
Weaknesses:
Internal rebound, hard to climb as the fork sucks the power from every stoke (no lock-out), but cn be easily cured by smooth spinning.
For the price this fork hard to beat! i chose the coil version as i dont really trust any air fork, with coil versions its so easy to maintain. The fork is so smooth throughout its travel. if you do some agressive trail riding and is consious about the weight this fork is for you. from my experience 4ft drops to flat is its limit, if you do higher drops get a 5in fork or a tripple it will last you longer. I also like big hucks but i leave it to my 03 MONSTER T mated to a 03 yeti ASX.

This reveiw is for the air version, some aspects will apply to coil version.
Pretty good fork for the money and looks cool. I have the 85mm(yes I've measured it) air version. I want to open it up and fiddle with the oil levels, oil weight, rebound damping but I don't have a shock pump to pump it up again so I haven't gotten all the performance out of it that is possible.
Being an air fork, it's very adjustable. If you want to do big hucks, run a high (within recommendations) oil level and it will ramp up for bottomless travel. If you want to do XC, take a little oil out and it will have a more linear spring rate. Adjust air pressure to your wieght, change oil weights and internal damping screw to change rebound. Your local bike shop should be able to do this for you (for a fee) if you aren't confident with opening up your fork.
Seems pretty good so far and going by other people's posts, when I adjust it, it should be really good.
PS: Does anyone know how to convert the 85mm air version to 105mm? Also, are air MX Comps able to be converted to coils?

I have the air model with 105mm of travel. Really, really smooth - handles both small vibrations and heavy hits. Gives you excellent control when going downhill and in turns without feeling "squishy". I usually ride in the city and this fork makes it sooooo much more comfortable. I hardly even notice a bump when riding off a curb. When the road is busted up from construction work I hardly even slow down, much less get off the bike. Why bother? ;-) A great time saver!
Weaknesses:
Not a good fork for climbing, absorbs too much of your pedaling power. Once I hit a bump while climbing just as the fork was rebounding from a pedaling stroke - nearly flipped the whole bike over backwards...

If you want to know what a REAL suspension fork can do for your bike, this is the one to try it with. Excellent performance for a price that doesn't have your wallet groaning. dunno what that guy below was on about with it not taking 1m+ jumps??? did a 5m+ jump on it and landed fully nose-landing, it took it fine. also did an 8ft drop yesterday on it and its seriously ok...if u cant do more than 5ft drops on it then you're crap. i love it how i can do a 30k epic ride and then come back, pump it up and do a huck with no bother. buy this fork if u r a smooth rider on a low budget. its basically a really good xc fork, but also can take the hits if thats ur thing. its worth twice the asking price

Plushy and nice travel especially if you know the right air combination you will load. You can vary the type of travel according to the air loading you put into the dual air-tight chambers. Very sturyd fork design and movements. Built not only for Cross Country, but for Aggressive Cross Country and competion use.
Weaknesses:
I'm using the non-ETA type so The only thing the is really weak for all air type is the locking during uphill climb. Its really hard to conquer a hill is the fork is so plushy. The main remedy is to pump air back, which in return makes me have to carry the fork's heavy air pump (It needs another separate high pressure air pump other than the one utilized for tire tubes). the air type absorbs and vibration from the ground and dampens it throughout the system.

Value for your buck. The 2003 MX Comp model has an advantage over its first version because it is specially designed for Aggressive Cross Country. But not necessarily big jumps. probably not so 1 meter jumps, it can resist (If you want some 3 meters jump you need to get those Bombers designed for DH and FR). For deep mini craters, the fork absorbs and does not bounce you back unlike the spring/coil types.
Overall, it has not failed on me (yet), loose rocks, hard pack, dirt and mud, ruts and even gutters... the technique is utilizing the right air load for the weight you have and the ride you will ride.

Giant NRS I have the 105 mm MC Comp Air. I use low pressure, "lots" of sag. Very plush, and because the airspring is progressive, no bottom out. I love these forks.
Bottom Line:
Great value for money. Feels like the Fox, costs much less, weighs "much" more, no lock out, can't have it all. The rebound adjustment is internal, from my manual: 5.5 Internally adjustable forks with SSV rebound adjustment You will find some damping rods where the rebound adjustment is located inside the stanchion tube. To adjust these forks, you will need to: • remove the dust cap located on the top of the fork’s leg. • insert the supplied hexagon rod into the stanchion tube, making sure to center the adjustment seat. • When turning the adjuster clockwise, you will increase the rebound hydraulic damping, making the fork slower during the rebound phase. • When turning the adjuster counterclockwise, you will decrease the rebound hydraulic damping, making the fork more responsive during the rebound phase. Do not force the adjuster screw past its limits.
It's a little work, but need to do it only once. I use max damping, maybe some thicker oil would be better, but as the summer is over, let's wait end see. The oil gets a little thicker as the temp drops.

Someone please tell me HOW DO YOU ADJUST THE REBOUND? I have the coil version and the manual is cr@p. I have a small pinging knocking noise and the book says to decrease the rebound but doesnt show how. My guess is you use the copper rod that came with it but how and where. Is it in both legs? Other than this adjustability complaint, the fork is great, real plush, real springy, so much better than anything made my answer/manitou. I'm gonna upgrade to heavier springs also to see if that helps.

MX Comp coils arent sold on any websites in the UK apart from chainreactioncycles.co.uk. I bought these forks as i didnt want to be messing about with air pressures. They are smooth operators out of the box and theyve impressed me on my local trails, where they have turned vicious hoof damaged hills into mildly bumpy easily rideable hills. Ive set them up for my weight (8st) and they actually work unlike my suntours which would only do any work if i had a fully loaded pack on my back! Overall im very impressed, I will post a follow up in a few weeks.

Needs to be broken in, but once you have its smooth and responsive. If you can be arsed with the adjustments you can get it bang on for your style, weight etc.. I agree with Rick from Pontefract, in the UK these forks only come in 105 travel as aftermarket items. I've achieved the full 105 travel (in fact if you drop the pressure to about 15psi below the manual values you can squeeze 110mm outta them, try it).I'm surprised people have had air leaks from them, my pair have totally airtight seals, guess its a quality control thing or you just need to tighten those top caps more. All in all a very good product.

This model comes in two designs. I have the air with 105 mm of travel. First off, this shock is very easy to setup. Run the air pressure slightly lower than the manual until it breaks in. My shock broke in rather quickly. It is very plush and takes the bigger hits with no flex. I weigh 225 pounds.

Strengths:
The best in its price range. Comparable only to other forks twice it's price. Fairly light, stiff, and takes hits well.
Weaknesses:
Takes a while to break in. Besides that, haven't found any yet.
Bike Setup:
XC build Schwinn Moab hardtail, Deore all around.
Bottom Line:
Great XC fork. Takes bigger hits well than most other XC forks. Remember this is an XC fork, don't expect this to last doing big drops everytime. If you want big air, the DJs and the double crown ones are for you. If you ride XC or a bit of light freeriding, this is the fork for you. I wouldn't ride anything other than Marzocchi!

This fork has improved my bike, comfidence and riding no end. I can't understand people who whinge that it can't take 2.5 meter drops. If you want to do that stuff, don't buy a f*****g budget fork dickhead. Spend $1000 not $250! Honestly some people! If however you are not a prat and ride hard at the weekends, do XC with some downhill, want to buy some decent forks but dont want to spend a fortune, then buy these. I weigh 200lb and find that these soak up all I throw at them. I am not a pro (if I was I would not be buying budget forks for f***s sake) but I live in a very hilly, rural part of the UK and they cope just fine. I'll spend the money I saved on these forks on other stuff thanks, like chablis and smoked salmon. No complaints, buy these forks if you have more sense than money. Only 4 stars overall cos maybe if I had spent $1000 the forks would have been better but hey who cares?!

Siff, very smooth, looks, 30mm stanchions, quite light, plenty of travel, durable, upgradable with coil springs and a lockout, VERY CHEAP!!!

this fork is great but dosn't hold up to 2.5m drops i found after just 3 weeks it is topping out the oil is right the rebounds fully clockwise every thing and it still tops.
other then that this fork is very plush and a great buy for any begginner ..

this is a strongish fork, and moves very smoothly through its 100mm of plush travel, also it is good to have it hard, then you dont get as much of the travel dlown on small roots and crap like that.
Weaknesses:
unfortunatly the fork isnt amasingly strong, and is totally in adjustable, unless you take a shock pump with you on your rides, utherwise your prety stuck when it comes to anything with a any more than a 5ft drop in it.

Very light and it seems to take anything you can throw at it.Very smooth and silky on any terrain. CHEAP !!! Oh and they are all 105mm, no such thing as an 80mm Mx comp

If I was to be picky I could say that the internal adjustment might be tricky but then again I dont really know cause I havent needed to adjust them.

Although I havent had them that long, they seem to cope with anything I can throw at them, I'm not that hard a rider but when I do give them some hammer they just soak it up.Small stuff doesnt even register on the handlebars at all and big hits just push the bars up with a light whump but with very liitle shock transmitted to the forearms. Theyve given me extra confidence knowing that I can hit pretty much anything without a problem.I paid £129 for these and have got mates who paid 3 or 4 times that for forks that have got loads of knobs and adjustors on but really dont work any better than these. At the end of the day theyre Bombers with a 2 year warranty and we all know about the reliability of Bombers. Anyone should buy these wether you are on a budget or if you just want an upgrade. Even at such a cheap price these are definately not a downgrade even from £400 forks

Well, having only had them for a few weeks, I can't say if they are going to last the test of time, but from what I have done on them, they work really well. The Dual Air (they come in Dual Coil as well) works a treat, and the dual positive preload adjustment is perfect for me since I weigh a bit over 180lbs.
Great value for money!
