$300.00 | | Purchased At: | ebay | | Strengths: | Build quality is fantastic, the frame is very light, the components are high quality. | | Weaknesses: | None | | Similar Products Used: | Marin Bear Valley | | Bike Setup: | Standard Spec | | Bottom Line: | I borrowed a friends "Marin Bear Valley" for a 50 mile trip. It was such a fantastic, high quality, reliable bike I decided to buy a Marin myself. I couldn't justify buying a brand new one as they cost way too much for just a weekend play. So, I looked on ebay. After a couple of months browsing I found a lovely alloy framed Marin Palisades for £150 pounds. I had a quick look at the reviews on this site and decided to go for it. The bike is fantastic. It's lighter than the Bear Valley due to it having an Alloy Frame. The gear levers are different (I think a bit old fashioned ) compared to the Bear Valley but the bike is a bit older. The overall build quality is fantastic. I've never owned such a quality make bike as this one. It's like the Rolls-Royce of bikes. I love it to bits. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$800.00 | | Strengths: | Just keeps on going! | | Weaknesses: | Cna't find brake blocks to fit it anymore! Anyone know if it can be upgraded to V-brakes or Disc fronts? Geometry not suited to suspension forks :-( | | Bike Setup: | Shimano Mountain LX dérailleurs, Rapid Fire shifters, Avid brake levers. | | Bottom Line: | I've had this bike since I was 15. Its a '91/'92 model (can't remember specifically). Really nice blue in colour. Just recently started riding it again and enjoying every minute! Just added Rapid Fire shifters and a few other bits and bobs due to wear and tear on the old girl.

$600.00 | | Purchased At: | South Bank Cycles | | Strengths: | No suspension, steel frame (I think) bike from intermediate heaven. The geometry on my 17" was perfect from the first ride - up hill is a joy, down dale stable as anything (allegedly clocked (by a third party) in Ethiopia at 80kmh down a gravel trail on a volcano), on the road (lite, bright, quick), in the mud (excellent) and snow (OK so the original tyres could have been better) it just has the most incredible "feel" and I have been on plenty of far more expensive bikes since that don't get close. | | Weaknesses: | Are there any, really. I was a novice buyer and if honest to this day wouldn't know one set of gear from another except through substantial testing | | Similar Products Used: | trek (also 1989 in the same price range) | | Bike Setup: | completely 1989 standard | | Bottom Line: | OK OK so this review is late! I bought this bike in Sept 1989 (read that again!) and it has been up, down, through and over 1000s of miles of stuff with nary a grimace. In the 17 years that is has been (literally) thrown on planes, down volcanoes and worse the only things that have actually broken (as opposed to worn out) is the rear der hanger and the pedal reflectors! I have of course replaced tyres, rear and front shifter, chain set, bottom bracket and rear wheel. The saddle has worn out, the frame has rust patches all over the grey paint job (the lime green is still there and hardly faded), the original front wheel has reached the end of the road and I can't find a front shifter to replace the second (maybe third) worn out one and am pondering the cost of the overhaul required to reinvigorate the beast. But after riding £750+ bikes (Cannondale F400 etc) this week I think I will - OK so my now over 40 frame has earnt the right to some comfort but this bike was and remains unbelievable so I reckon I favour the rebuild than a new one even if my poor backside will suffer........ | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Excellent paint job. Long lasting components. | | Weaknesses: | Decals fell off. | | Similar Products Used: | Marin nail Trail, | | Bike Setup: | Araya front rim (original), Mavic rear, Shimano Altus A10 components, Cro-mo frame | | Bottom Line: | I tried several bikes before I bought this one, 10 years ago. I knew immediately that this was the one first when I saw it and then when I took it for a spin. I have taken it everywhere, thrown it through logs, mud, creeks, rocks, sand, pavement, long rides. I just got the new rime in the rear a few weeks ago when I backed up the car and destroyed the rim and spokes. I have gone through three chains, a couple of tires, brake pads and it still goes. It's never abandoned me in any of my adventures. My friends laugh at my old, shock-less bike. They feel sorry that I don't have a fancy one with shocks everywhere and aluminum frame, and that I have to haul it on hard terrain. But I refuse to change it until it literally falls apart and there is no way to fix it. In the meantime, I am very happy to own it and proud to own it. The paint is all there (purple), some of the decals are gone (they were gone on the first two months after I bought it). There isn't a trace of corrosion in it. So I think I'll have it for another ten years. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Yeah, it's old and you'll probably never see one of these, but for an affordable old bike, the frame is amazing. Long, comfy chainstays, kicked out fork, long top tube for an old bike, and it's holding up great even with all the rust on it. To anybody with spare parts and one of these frames kicking around in their garage, build it up! It's a lot of fun to ride an old frame, and with some v brakes and a riser, it's just that much better. And the steel soaks up rough winter stuff, just remember it's a beater and laugh at the rust. from Colorado Springs, CO Date Reviewed: November 1, 1999 | | Favorite Trail: | The Chutes | | Duration Product Used: | 3 months | | Strengths: | The Aluminum Frame with Ovation tubing is incredible. It is the stiffest frame, that I have found in this price range. My bike (15.5) weighs about 22 pounds. The Ritchey Logic Headset is great, I haven't done any damage to it yet. The shifters work suprisingly well, I have no major complaints from either the Alivio or STX/RC components. The Ritchey Vantage rims work well and the IRC tires are some of the best there are. The stem and riser bar make for a very upright cockpit. This has geometery that is more common on higher end bikes. Any bike at this price should be bought for one thing, the frame. This bike delivers. The polished color is great. | | Weaknesses: | The biggest weakness is the RST 381 EL fork that came with my bike. It is easily adjustable, but is not as supple as other forks out there. Of course, at this price range, it is probably fairly good. I'd replace it though. With the money you save on the bike, an RS Judy is not out of your price range. The RST has a tendency to wobble at high speeds over technical terrain and during hard front braking. The brakes are adequet, but these should probably be replaced over time, also. I would also recommend better cranks (try LX for about $80-$90). | | Similar Products Used: | Specialized Rockhopper, Gary Fisher, Marin Bear Trail, Cannondale F300, Haro Escape A7 | | Bike Setup: | 15.5 1999 with Ovation Tubing RST 381 EL w/ preload adjusters | | Bottom Line: | Good geometery, great frame, featherweight alloy, easy upgrades, great ride, good price. I was looking at GTs, Fishers and Konas in my price range( and a few that were not like GT Karakorum and Ricochet, Fisher hoo koo and Paragon) and stumbled across the Palisades Trail at Mountain Bike City in Calgary. I was immediately struck by the craftmanship of this bike; it's almost a work of art. But what really sold me was how responsive the bike was. I had ridden several 7005 aluminum bikes and found most to be inferior in responsiveness to a good Cromoly frame; kind of a dead feel. The Marin was every bit as good as the Kona Cromoly bikes(which I really liked as well) but was priced more competitively and the clearcoat silver with red finish was a knockout. The components (Shimano Alivio) are okay for an intermediate bike and are comparable to what's available on similarly priced bikes from other manufacturers I tested. The one exception is the low-quality brakes which will be upgraded when I return the bike to the dealer for its first tune-up. The saddle looks good with the red detailing to match the bike's finish but it is not friendly to one's tender parts. I'll live without the detailing and replace it soon.Performance? Wow! Is this a sweet bike for the price! The handling is precise and the bike is easy to control. It climbs like a goat. I haven't tried any tough downhill trail sections yet( and probably won't until the brake upgrade) but I think the bike will be up to the challenge. The RST 381 fork is adequate for me right now but I will probably upgrade it as I get more involved with tougher trails. The bike seems to be ideal for upgrading with it's good quality frame and durable feel. I expect to have it for years. If you are shopping for a bike in Calgary, you can't go wrong by dealing with Terry at Mountain Bike City. He knows his stuff and provides great service. | Overall Rating: |

This bike is solid state all the way. For the components and frame combination that I was looking for, this bike was a perfect fit for me, at any price. The paint job is excellent. I paid 499 dollars. My girlfriend purchased a Hawk Hill, and she loves it. She paid 425 dollars. Nothing was spared in reguards to the craftsmenship and quality of this bike. It has a soft ride, and it glides through the woods. The guy we bought the bikes off of gave us an education on them. He was filled with information, and it helped a great deal in our decision making. The Hawk Hill has the Ovation tubing for '99. It has a stiffer feel than the Palisades Trail, and it appears to be lighter. We love these bikes. | Overall Rating: |

Racer??? - nope, in fact none of the above coz I ride my Palisades Trail every day to work and back - plus whatever I do at weekends around and about (- roady stuff again though mostly). I hope by inviting reviews you include older versions too coz mine is 1990ish I think (actually Id like to know the year - it is red with black front forks/handlebars, has yellow Marin logos and a strange back brake below the bottom part of the frame which may narrow this down!) - I bought it second hand (for £150) in 1993 and it's a honey! It has never let me down - ever! When I took it for a service to the local cycle shop they thought it was ace - they are Marin dealers (Cycle 2000, Lancaster). I dont think theyd seen one from that era before. I will never part with it unless it falls apart and that seems unlikely! Ive taken it cycle touring around Europe too and its only had one new tyre in about 6000km - NOTHING else has been replaced! I just registered it with the National Cycle Registry and they tell me it would cost about £500 to replace - WOW! Well, I hope I dont need to... but Id certainly go for another Marin if it came to it! Heres to many more years of happy cycling ahead - from one who loves her (old) Palisades Trail! | Overall Rating: |

I bought my 94 PT at the end of the model year on sale. I fell in love with the bike after riding my boyfriend's 93 PT for a couple of months after my $150.00 K-Mart MTB wannabe was stolen (thank God!). Although his was a 19 and I ride a 17.5, his still handled well enough for me that I decided to buy my own. I have been extremely happy with it and IF I ever decide to buy another bike, you can bet it will be a Marin. The only problem I have with it is cosmetic. I wish the purple paint color didn't fade so easily in the sun and I wish the 94 would have kept the solid purple frame color of the 93 model instead of the light bronze and purple combination, but it's still a beautiful bike to look at and absolutely the best $500.00 I've ever spent. Hi. I bought my Marin P.T. in Jan.'98 & have covered over 4000km of mountainous terrain in Germany & France. Around Heidelberg there's lots of testing muddy narrow tracks, endless steps, plenty of logs and the occasional Mercedes to crash into! All great fun with the P.T. which seems to just keep on going. The strong but light Alu. 20.5 frame handles well going up & down tricky slopes. The components are very durable. In 8 months I haven't needed to replace anything except tyres (2nd set), brake blockes (3rd set) & the seat post. It even survived unscathed after causing over DM2000 worth of damage in a head-on with a Merc. Luckily for me, I survived as well.I paid DM1050, which is about $600, or 370 quid. Not bad! I reckon it's a good first time buy. | Overall Rating: |

My 1998 Palisades Trail? It has excellent drive response, quick handling. Even with intermediate tyres, the bike feels lively. I was worried it would 'bounce' when climbing etc, but it dosen't. The tuned RST 381 SM's are excellent. They let you go in hard, and come out smiling! I like fast road descents and hit 47mph last year on my rigid MTB, I am sure this bike will give me the confidence to pass the big 50. Finishing on the bike is excellent and surprising at the price, i.e. 'Marin' printed on the shifter cables, transparent anti-chafing patches on the frame. The paint work is superb, polished aluminium, with red RST suspension forks (people just can't help muttering 'nice bike'). Shifting is smoot as butter, the STX-RC is much better than the LX on my last bike. I am able to take tyres on and off the Ritchey wheels without using levers, they are a 'snug', rather than 'tight' fit. The wheels seem to have been very accuratley spec'd to enable this. A real bonus. | Overall Rating: |

I had this bike for three years and sold it this spring, still in love with it! I am mostly impressed by the paint, after tree years of beating up it was still looking better than my Kona Kilaue now looks after tre months of (a little more severe) beating up! I also liked the way it followed me, it was light and a bit flexible, not all stiff like the GT:s I tried. I've seen that this and last year's model has turned more into a DH-bike with shocks and riser bars, so it's maybe a totally different bike than the one I once had... but if you find a '94 or '95 for a good price, buy it! The newer models I can't say anything about. Being not a top-of-the-line-model, it won't get a 5, but if this was a low-budget-contest, this bike would win! | Overall Rating: |

allover decent bike, very few flaws, i opted for a solid front fork which made the bike very quick in response and lighter as well (commuting with it)two complaints: v-brake system(caliper springs go dead), and sluggish rear derailer.im going to take this thing on a 200 mile ride seattle to portland its that comfortable. it also takes the jumps and crashes at st edwards with ease. the seller from alpine hut #2 sucked big no follow through on any services. | Overall Rating: |

I use this bike to survey deer trails ,preseason. I can cover ground, go really slow through narrow paths, and climb hills. So far its a dandy. It rides around on the back of my camero ands I take it on trips to where ever. Its lite, and it nice to just cruise in the streets at nite.. I LIKE IT. | Overall Rating: |

Mine is an older model, but I find it very comfortable. The size and the weight are ideal, especially for we weekend warrior women, and it delivers a really comfortable ride. I am also happy that mine does not have the Grip Shift, and I never would have bought it if it did. However, I am disappointed that the colours have changed from the silver and purple that mine is. | Overall Rating: |

I bought my P.Trail 2/96 15.5frame and I've gone through two rear der. hangers, changed to suspension(Manitou M5), Ringle' stem for length, Bontrager seat, tires and rimes,Kooka 177 Vaders,TNT Hubes,Control Tech B-ends,and Sticks(hubes/seat). Everything in it now has been changed except for STX system,H-Bars,and Seatpost. But other than that,Marin sure knows how to make a bike last. The frame has held up without any cracks, yet.Right now I ride a Voodoo Bokor, But the P.Trail will always be my favorite. I still ride her once in awhile, but she's not forgotten. So I Highly Rec. this Horse to anyone looking for inexpensive ride, to build their skills on, or just to have fun on at the wild trails with.So if you can get your hands on one,do it. | Overall Rating: |

There are no hills here...but I still like to try...the sand stops me a lot of the time...but anyways, it is a good bike to look at. Nobody else here has a bike so I feel special. I need disc brakes so the sand stops clogging my v-brakes! Good stuff! | Overall Rating: |

Bought mine in 1993 and still going strong. The only parts I have replaced is a rear tyre to a Continental Cross Country (old one wore out) and the pedals to SPD's. Grey paint job easy to clean and doesn't mark easily. This is the best bike I have ever bought. Pretty cool colour also:) | Overall Rating: |

Excellent. I have the 96 Palisades.I had to upgrade some things (front fork-RockShox Indy XC, brakes- Shimano LX ...) but I love the over-oversized strong frame (despite the bike is very heavy). You don´t have to be careful with the Palisades, it´s strong enough to do whatever you want. It is a great value, and very nice to see. | Overall Rating: |

I have the 96 model Palisades Trail, pretty cool colour. The frame is nice, but a little heavy, and the stock parts are somewhat useless other than the drive train. I'm almost successful in upgrading all the stock parts, except for the handlebars, they're still pretty cool looking. Overall, it's a fairly awesome bike, cept for the weight. | Overall Rating: |

I own a 97 Palisades Trail painted Racing Yellow with the optional Indy C Fork and I considere it an excellent buy (+/- $700) down here in Puerto Rico) compare to what you can get from Gary Fisher or Klein in the Island.I recomend this bike to anyone that wants to start with a good bike or just doesn't have the money for the more exotic stuff. Shimano STX components with rapid fire levers work great. WTB Velociraptor tires are great in the dirt, just don't go into any muddy situation. Saddle could be better. I like this bike so much I already started to make upgrades in the quest to have a great bike. | Overall Rating: |

I currently live in Jersey, but by august, i'll be pounding away at Marin's favorite trails....Mt. Tam.! My pal trail is the first owned true mountain bike. I've riden cannondale and they suck!!!! Back to pal trail, it's the absolute best bike! Lightweight, and very responsive. I bought it in 96, so i have the 96 model. I had to tinker with it a bit though. I told the guy, the grip shifts, they suck and give me the STX rapid fire. Works wonders even on shit bikes. i also had to get bar ends. all i have to do now is add a good front suspension to it. If i don't do that, i'm gonna get a Marin full suspension. any suggestions? 5 chilies...kick ass bike! | Overall Rating: |

The '96 Palisades Trail is a GREAT value for a 7000 series aluminum frame with STX components and a 7 speed rear. I love the quick response I get from such a light frame. I can actually feel the transfer of power from my pedals more than with my old steel frame. I just point and GO! The componentry is already at a good enough level that I don't have to spend extra money on upgrades. The only thing I will be changing in the near future will be to slap a Rock Shox fork on the front. The rigidity of Aluminum frames causes you to feel those roots and rocks a bit more than steel. This is a GREAT step-up bike for the CroMo wielding Weekend Warrior. | Overall Rating: |

My '95 is cro-mo, I wish I had the new alum. but I couldn't beat the deal. I got the bike and a Judy xc (killer fork) for 700.00 $. It was speced better than anything else I looked at Giants,Cannondales. I makes for a great 1st bike and I'm very happy with it. I intend to race it this october(1st time racing) I think it should hold up for a while, will see! The only thing that sucks is the 170mm stx cranks Ist thing I'm going to change, then the hubs, little to flexable. Overall its a great bike to get your feet wet with, Marin make excellent bikes.

I hated the seat and replaced it with softer/gentler gel type seat($20).
So far, I am extremely pleased with the bike...

I am new to the MTB but caught the bug pretty fast after one rental. I test drove the Canondale M500, Trek 930 & 830, Specialized Rockhopper (std & Ultra). I really liked how light the Cannondale was but was disappointed with its price and its components. A friend who is a serious biker told me about Marin. I checked it out. For $530 in DC, I got an Aluminum Frame, STX components all around, and Gripshifter 400s all weighing in at about 25 lbs. I added Answer Hyperends to complete the bike until I can afford a front shock. Overall, I'd have to recommend this bike over the other ones I tested. | Overall Rating: |

I recently purchased the Palisades Trail from my local bike shop. I tried many different brands and models including Specialized, Jamis, Giant, GT, Mongoose, Trek and Schwinn. The Palisades Trail was both an excellent bike and a great value. For the cost of a Rock Hopper A1 Comp, I was able to get the Palisades Trail AND a Rock Shox Q21R shock! The bike handles great riding to work as well as pounding through the rocks and loose stuff in the local foothills. I will keep this bike for a LONG time (unless I upgrade to the Marin full suspension!). I highly recommend this bike for both the quality and the value.

Upon the introduction to Marin, I was rather new to the MTB experience. However, with the purchase of my Palisades Trail, I quickly discovered the excitement and thrill of taking to the trails. The Palisades Trail is an excellent bike for the newcomer and pro, as it allows for easy upgrading (I have just recently added a Manitou Mach 5). Its light-weight, tough frame allows the rider to push it to the limits. The Grip Shift is something you either love or hate, me ... I can't get enough of it (even though it isn't the top of the line model on the Palisades). I've yet to find any major bugs with this bike, and don't suspect I will.
