Favorite Trail:Betwys y Coed
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Strengths:A quick handling, lightweight, strong frame. I am 6'2", weigh 13.5 stone and throw this bike down most things, Snowdon included. I have also cycled the lenght of wales on it (200 miles and 15,000 feet of climbling). I have also started to ride the odd trailquests, as you see its a bike for anything.
Weaknesses:none
Bike Setup:I have built this rig up myself, it has 2002 Rock Shox Duke SL's, Magura HS33, XT groupset, Fire XC Pro tyres, Kore stem and downhill bars.
Bottom Line:Great bike to upgrade, very reliable. Ideal for a beginner to intermediate. A bike to ride anywhere, anytime.

Bottom Line:I love the marin , the best bike i have ever spent money on had the bike just over 2 years, spent a bit of money on her when i first go, upgrading a few bits here and there, but i have not had to spend a penny since, i use the bike for an hour a day over the local hills with a big ride at the week end, so far the bike has performed really well with just the odd cable strech, all round 5 star bike marin should be proud that its making so many people happy!!:-)

Date Reviewed: July 24, 2000
Favorite Trail:chutes & ladders
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Strengths:The '98 Nail Trail was a very good deal. Great frame, reasonably spec'd, I still am running the same GEAX Hooks
after 2 years ... they are indestructable. Can't say the same for the BB!
Weaknesses:For an entry level country ride, I would say none.
Similar Products Used:'90 Stumpjumper
Bike Setup:Replaced the RST 381 with a '99 Manitou SX-R; XT/Mavic 221 wheelsets, Wellgo 800's, SDG ti rail seat, XT BB when the old one seized.
Bottom Line:Really great for an entry level bike, with judicious upgrading it easily became the equal of some of it's pricier brethren.

It has some funny measurements....like a 30.0 seatpost!! Whats up with that!
Similar Products Used:Giant XTC

Bottom Line:This is a great beginners bike, with a few upgrades you could be racing sport in no time.

Date Reviewed: November 30, 1999
Favorite Trail:
Hamilton Creek, Nashville, TN
Duration Product Used:
2 Years
Strengths:
The Nail Trail is an unbelievably light ride with great rigidity. I weigh about 210lb and I punish it on the trail quite frequently and it has never let me down
Weaknesses:
There are two issues I take with the bike. One is the head stem, it seems to be a bit weak and tends to scream when a lot of torque is applied, especially when traversing steep uphill grades. My only other issue is or should say was the seat. It began to fail on me about six months into riding. The support rods did not hold up. I do a lot of inner city riding as well as off road and do sit in my seat quite a bit. I replaced it with a specialized split tail for ease of tailbone. The seat did wonders for my ass as well as my posture while riding.
Similar Products Used:
My first bike (mountain) was a Giant Iguana. It was a great entry level bike. I bought it used and got a lot of great riding out of it down in Mississippi. It was stolen and I went for a while without a bike. Upon moving to Nashville, TN I realized there were way too many trails and hills to explore and conquer not to have a bike of my own. I rode a Diamondback loaner for a while then invested in my Nail Trail. Its been a joy and a blessing
Bike Setup:
When I purchased the bike it came with an RST shock(rapid shock technology). I dont know much about that particular company but from my experience its been excellent. The bike also came with some great shimano components and excellent shifters, rapid fire.
Bottom Line:Basically I could not be any happier with my bike. I have put it to the test for well over a year now an its held up wonderfully. I highly recomend this bike to someone whos getting into biking because it is a great entry level bike that can be built upon for future improvements and upgrades. This bike can take a punishment and not blink an eye. Not to mention the beautiful yellow paint job, it really catches the eyes of fellow bikers and the ladies dig it.

Bottom Line:I've ridden and raced my Nail Trail since April 1994. I added Manitou front suspension and clipless pedals and some titanium skewers to dress it up. It's been a super bike, never let me down! It's time to put the poor thing out to pasture (beach bike) and replace it with a 2000 Marin Juniper Trail.

I like to ride my bike with no saddle, because it gives me anal pleasure to slide up and down on the seat post as I ride along. Only the Nail Trail gives me this pleasure. I have tried other bikes, but they just don't turn me on. The Marin Nail Trail is one F*ckable bike, and if it had a hole I'd give it one.

My 97 Nail Trail is my first mountain bike and I love it. I've fitted Manitou Spyder R forks for plush frontal bouncing and a set of VP104 pedals to hang onto the bike all the better for falling down hills. Great bike and great price. It's impressed me so much I'm considering a full bouncer Marin in the New Year as the new ones look very tasty.

I have a 98 Nail Trail. I find the Nail Trail an excellent XC mount. It is very forgiving and gives a great ride for the money. The RST forks are magic and the standard equipment level is great. Clipless pedals would make the bike complete. Marin are not really well known in Australia which is a shame, because they are excellent bikes.

I bought my 95' Nail Trail in the fall of 1995. It was my first mountainbike,
and what a good choice I've made! When I bought it it was the best looking
and lightest aluminum bike around. After 3 years, I can say that not much
has changed. I added a Marzocchi Z2 and a USE suspension seat post last summer
(I should have done it earlier!). I also swapped in 2.2 wide tires and upgraded
to clipless pedals. Anyhting else is stock. What more do I want?

But I do have a suggestion though... put a beefer shock on it... even though the RST is fine I'd still like to see a manatou shock...also please think of other frame components like magneseum or titanium.... where'd the Ti frames go?! Oh yes... Carbon frames are okay... Oop's sorry .... didn't mean to say all that boring stuff.... but you know some of the the other companies that your competing with have such frames... like SPECIALIZED and GT and not to mention K2...so get with it guys' I'm in there pullin for you.

I have a '96 model nail trail. I am very fond of her, because i see her as a girl, a very beautifull one. I like the steering and in downhill tracks i have a lot under control, a lot because i don't have myself under control while biking.
I have to see it as a whole bike and not just the frame. I like the bike because it's light weight bike. The wheels are not strong enough for me, unfortunatly, but they will do. I have a downhill rockshox judy DH fork in it and i rarely looses grip and i'm fast compared to others. The gears are working well and the cantilever brakes are a bit old-fashioned, but i brake just the same as others in the same time..ah but i'm no sissy, i just brake a little harder. The allu wheels and high temperature are like devil and god.
I only saw the same bike once and the owner of that other one whas very proud of it too, and the wheels..were okay to him, so i have to get a new Marin, but a full suspension one i guess. And please do more about advertising, because marin is a rare appearance here in Holland. But way to go! I love you all.

Bottom Line:

I picked up my 98 Nail Trail today and after about 17 KM my initial impression is very positive. I spent two weeks trying Konas, Rockys, Treks, Gts, etc. and nothing felt as good as a Nail Trail that literally just came out of the box. With STX-RC and STX the shifting is crisp and quick and the Dia Compe V-brakes do a nice job, though they don't grip nearly as hard as my wife's Shimanos. The seat is as hard as a rock but the riding position is comfortable for my 6'2 (187 cm) height (19 inch frame). The colour (Gloss Goldenrod) is great but, as many of you have said, the quality is only fair. I'd go for the polished frame if you like that look. Although my experience with my new steed is short, I have no buyers remorse and would do it all over again tomorrow. Go for it, it's a great bike with a fantastic ride.

I've had my Nail Trail for a couple of years now and have never had any severe problems with it. Its a really stiff bike that takes a beating again and again. The only problem I've had with it are that the brakes aren't up to snuff. I'm switching them out for V-brakes soon. When I bought it, I had them put some rockshox and rapid fire shifters on it too. They definitely improved the bike over its standard config at the time that I got it. 5 chillis from me!

I have owned an '96 Nail Trail for 18 months and it is INCREDIBLE. OK, I really must change the brakes and the gripshift can get a bit iffy sometimes but the frame is AMAZING. It is so stiff, absolutely all your energy goes into pushing the bike along. At first I didn't understand what was so special about the geometry, then I sped up! The faster you go, the harder it seems to hold its line. I'm railing corners about 15 mph (23 kph) faster than my old heap. It weighs next to nothing as well (I'm still on rigid forks). I'm really taken by the long top tube - it keeps my back flat, my lungs open and basically, I can ride for ever. Essentially, if you're after a mid-price cross-country scoot with the geometry of the big boys - go for a NAIL TRAIL!P.S get the riding strip as well - Fly along on a gleaming aluminium missile with Mercedes-Benz tristars all over the place. And pretend you haven't noticed that everyone stops and stares!

I have to agree that the paint job is awful. I´m going to strip the
paint of the frame to get that polished aluminum out in the open.
If anyone reading this got any tips regarding paint stripping solvents

So now we sit more uprigth which gives a good wiev, also when youre in the fields doing wild things, and you get less pain in the neck.
Its a VERY good bike, at a reasonable price apx. 1000 $/6000 DANISH KR.

I bought a new '97 Nail Trail about two months ago and I can truely say it was a great deal. The frame itself is light and responsive and for the money I got some pretty class hardware (Avid 1d 2.0 brakes, White industries crank etc...all mostly quality stuff). However the standard Marin lite parts are (to put it nicely) a load of old pants. Already the stem is creeking and showing signs of stress, the bars are wank too and the seatpost is slightly less usefull than a claustrophobic mole with a particularly nasty fear of the dark. The Diatech is crap too (thing's knackered already!). still, like everyone seems to be saying it is a great bike to build on and I added Azonic downhill bars, KORE stem LOOK pedals and a few other odd bits and now the bike is quite simply the dog's bollocks. So there you are, it's a bike that's definitely worth a look so five chillis from me. Sadly I have to go now because it's 4:30 and time for tea and crumpets!

Some of the marin lite items seem to where out quickly but that's to be expected with the price your paying. It's a excellent bike to build on and upgrade. I have never had any type of problems and I've taken some serious spills in my year of owning it. I crashed so hard I broke both of my wrists, shattering my left one, but my bike rode away with no damage or ill effects besides a broken bar end. Great all around bike.
