a weekend warrior
from London, England Date Reviewed: October 4, 1998 | | Bottom Line: | Not actually a weekend warrior at all - more WEEKday warrior, since my bike's a replacement for the car i could never park (or drive above 10mph) here in the city. Really impressed with this Marin hybrid - the larger, thinner wheels are great for racer-like speed on the avenues, whilst the frame seems pretty happy with my developing taste for riding on and off London's cliff-like pavement (sidewalk). a major bonus is that i (an 8 stone weakling) can lift this bike up the stairs in one hand, whilst reaching for my key with the other. The 24 gears may be overkill for the city, but perhaps that's cause I live in London (which is a little flatter than San Fransisco). The standard shifters were Shimano STX RC thumb-clicker things, which I had swapped over for SRAM grip-shifters (much, much better for traffic jams). Only downside is the Dia Compe brakes: the levers are not outstanding, although since i don't go down mountains i don't mind too much, but the V-Brakes - especially the rear one - just don't want to spring back, giving major drag problems. also, and this i think is a newbie compliant, it should have come WITH mudguards (trendy or otherwise) and lights, since I imagine I can't be the only hybrid purchaser who needs to arrive at work looking reasonably presentable - yeah, okay, so the mask is silly, but it makes for great darth vader impressions at meetings (only wish the remote strangulation trick really worked). Anyway, if this counts as any form of recommendation, this is the bike that converted one car-loving fanatic in about 60 seconds... | Overall Rating: |
